The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Year of Hell, Part 2. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week they are joined by writer Brannon Braga for a short interview.

Year of Hell, Part 2:

Yes, he likely would. I don’t know in real life between the actors, but Chakotay was shown to be very physical in a bruiser kind of way. Tom had mad skills and height, but Chakotay looked like he could pack a mean punch.

This is an epic episode. Movie worthy. The SFx was amazing. And the conflicts between senior staff were compelling to watch. I found a parallel between Janeway asking how the Doctor was going to enforce his will and Paris asking Chakotay if he was going to take away his replicator rations. So… is Janeway a bad influence on Paris or is Paris a bad influence on Janeway? Or are they just two peas in a pod when it comes to certain topics? Poor Robbie being frustrated over the J/C tease. Yes, they did that for years. Kind of the same as many TV series of that era. And all were afraid of the ‘Moonlighting’ curse.* I think that’s may be one of the reasons they let Tom/B’Elana hook up - to give SOME payoff. - Oberist was a great character - Annorax was an excellent villain One of my favorite moments was the indoor nebula. In sum, a fabulous hour of TV. *Moonlighting, IMO was doomed for other reasons. Janeway staying separate made sense. It was the Seven/Chakotay thing that was out of left field.

I'm just gonna chime in here on behalf of all the fans of Star Trek who are also sports fans - we love the little football, hockey, baseball, and basketball bits and pieces here and there ;) And this one was great (although your defense is a little weak with just 2 guys xD) ... here's my take on this: our offense: Janeway (the team leader) is clearly at QB, Chakotay gets the ball handed by Janeway the same way as he gets temporary command/the bridge is the RB, Tuvok as tactical officer is your most dangerous weapon so is WR... our defense: Harry at LB and B'elana at CB, the doc being the medic and (spoiler alert: also being the ECH) is your last line of defense, so he is our Safety, 7of9 is your all-around weapon who can play offense, defense and special teams, Tom steering the ship is our coach, and Neelix serving food and drinks for everyone is the waterboy xD

Dee McGee

Who would have thought you would be published poets less than 3 years later!

It’s funny because I didn’t blink too much at JC hinted romance only because this happened on TNG with Picard and Beverly and Riker and Troi! Lots of flirting and hinting but no getting together. That’s why I was so shocked when the writers brought Paris and Torres together! Hadn’t happened before with two main characters having real committed romantic relationship.

Jeffra

Cause and Effect is one of my all time favorite ‘time travel’ episodes!! So good.

Rosey_is_a_nerd_

Oh I assure you the Pocket Watch lives on in sooooo many J/Cers fan fictions

Rich Gross

How is Seven’s jersey number 8? :)

Cheerful Nihilist

Although I am not a Bulldogs fan, Kirby Smart, Georgia's Head Coach. Deserves a champion.

Rich Gross

I usually would agree that sending The Doctor in would have been better than Janeway (or anyone else) risking themselves being injured. However, in this case I totally understand it. There is only one doctor, he’s very busy taking care of already injured crew members, and even though the risk to him would be much lower, it would be unacceptable to take any risk of losing him and end up with no doctor.

MisterRob

Just a personal comment... I’m glad Robbie called it out, but the last scene before the final act, where Janeway says goodbye to Tuvok before the battle, is one of the most memorable scenes of the entire series for me. The dialogue, the acting, the music, the emotion… it hits on all cylinders. One of the few times I cried watching the show… that look on Kate’s face where she looks like she’s on the verge of breaking down, and then quickly lets go of Tuvok to let Seven take him… and then the final shot on the bridge with the camera pulling back and Janeway alone… just perfection. Heart-wrenching, but beautiful.

That chakotay ‘stache is cursed! [meteoroid= small rock in space, micrometeoroid= very small rock in space, meteor= when meteoroids enter a planets atmosphere and burn up, meteorite= when they make it all the way to the ground.]

Andrew Murray

Seven can be the opposition team - she is Borg after all.

Andrew Murray

I don't even care much for my own country's prominent football code(s) Rugby League/Union, Soccer or Australian Rules.

Andrew Murray

I can see how the Part I / Part II could easily be first and last episode of the an entire season story arc season - and you have this armada joining Voyager, and you have basically missed 22 (based on 24 average per season at the time) episodes in between, leading up to this point.

Andrew Murray

I wish the two parters (in any of the Trek franchise series) where they weren't season cliff-hangers could have been have been aired as movie-length eps like this "Year of Hell", "The Killing Game" and even "End Game."

Andrew Murray

Intransigent: Unwillingness to change one's views or to agree; stubbornly refusing to compromise (Sounds more like B'elanna Torres than Tom Paris).

Andrew Murray

"Elixir of Endurance" a.k.a. Gatorade in 21st Century terms.

Andrew Murray

So this is to Delta Flyers - speaking of games in Trek, so how did "Kal-toe" work - obviously the "solved puzzle" was some sort of VFX / CGI but was there an actual prop that Tim Russ worked with (the ep that comes to mind is the one with the alien in the nebula that Tuvok falls for in the Hawaiian / Risa (or whatever it was) holodeck scenario)

Andrew Murray

The tag scene with Anorax setting down his work and going off with his wife still makes you wonder, will he eventually repeat the mistake, make the time ship, some accident occurs and wipes out his family - again. Is is a point in time that can't be altered. The only anomaly that won't be part of the situation is Voyager which goes on its way on being told they are in disputed space, and wisely set a detour course.

Andrew Murray

In a fist fight wouldn't the Marquis Mauler win? Ha ha.

Andrew Murray

You'd think all this tampering with time would attract the attention of the Time Ship Relativity.....

Andrew Murray

This is how I remember the trek casts: (not counting ENT, DISC, LOWER DECKS, STRANGE NEW WORLDS or PRODIGY). TOS: Kirk Spock McCoy Chekov Sulu Uhuru Scotty DS9: Sisko Dax Odo Quark Bashir Worf O'Brien (Jake?) TNG: Picard Riker Crusher Troi Worf La Forge Data VOY: Janeway Chakotay Tuvok Kim Paris EMH Torres Seven

Andrew Murray

Gene didn't like time travel in Trek yet TOS has some of the best - City on the Edge of Forever, Tomorrow is Yesterday.....and probably a few more.

Karen

The Krenim show up again in the relaunch novels. Needless to say, they were up to their old tricks. Anorax was mentioned as a venerated scientist. The Voyager crew didn't recall any of the events from the Year of Hell but eventually came to know about them due to some buoys with temporal shields that survived the timeline reset. That particular novel wasn't my favorite of the bunch. But I really found it to be an interesting take on these episodes. Kristin Beyer did a fantastic job with the relaunch books.

Barbara Sabo

Thanks for the book suggestion! Just ordered it!

Daniel

Very cool merch!

Angela Hopkins

5 ships in the visual, did that include Voyager? Because if Voyager was joined by 5 ships, and the time ship says “6 ships heading this way-and one is Voyager” then there was no error.

Lana Holt

Love your limericks and haikyuus. It looks soooooo freaking hard.

MiKE DEVLiN

Ok Garrett - there`s your challenge - get an interview with Joe Menosky before the end of The Delta Flyers! Great to hear you're endeavouring to get interviews with Kurtwood Smith and Michael McKean, btw! I`m also a big fan of those actors :) Thanks!

MiKE DEVLiN

PS thanks so for much for having Brannon on to talk Year of Hell - as I`ve loved these episodes since they aired in '97! :D

Tashicat

Maybe theyre only allowed to correct federation induced problems and we didnt start this, the Krenim did

Chris W

I admit to reverting to a 14 year old and giggling when they said she was “tight end”.

Heather Kim

Great job, as always, guys. Your tag, and what I assume is Rebecca's commentary on it were a hoot! This podcast has really brightened up my existence this past year and a half. Thanks!

Irene Artho

Great podcast. Imagine the frustration and anger if there would have been a whole season of Year of Hell and at the end the time was reset so the whole season didn't actually happen! :D

Karen

I loved the text over the tag at the end where they seemingly forgot that the whole thing with the Krenim never happened! lol. I guess it could have happened in the 2 minutes between being beamed off the Krenim ship and Janeway resetting the timeline after she crashed Voyager into the timeship.

Don Eitner

When I first watched "Year of Hell part 2" I realized that the solution would be to remove the time ship from the timeline. But I thought it would be done in a more ST:TNG way, convincing Annorax to turn his weapon on itself. I did not foresee Janeway kamikaze ramming the ship.

Lisa Minnesma

I disagree with Rick Berman (was it?) in that the main star of the show is the ship. I would say that it's equally the senior officers as it is the ship, 50/50. The ship DID become their home but when people talk about Voyager I immediately think of the crew.

AM Marquez

Neelix is totally the punter. Likely to be blocked or roughed up, not really respected by the rest of the team. When, once in a blue moon, he tackles a returner, he celebrates as though he's single-handedly won the game.

Kris Hansen

This is the second time in just a few episodes where Chakotay has so bought into a narrative presented by an alien that he forgets his responsibility to Voyager. (The first was Nemesis.) What's up with that?

Mary Burch

Hell yeah for a Michael McKean interview! I love everything he's in!

Irene Artho

When Kurtwood Smith speaks, I can't help but think of the "Dear Kitten" videos :D That voice and pronunciation sound so similar! I checked though and it's not Kurtwood Smith in the other videos.

Mary Burch

Also, while the show aired I was positive that the crew shipped Janeway and Chakotay just as much as the fans did, and TDF has essentially confirmed my theory. :)

Tara

Hey - um, the watch DOES survive. If you check the scene when Chakotay gives it to her (Part 1, at about 28:45), when she gives it back to him, he says, "Kathryn, I replicated this months ago. I've been saving it; I wanted you to have it." So when time resets at the end of Part 2, they go to a point when Chakotay has already replicated it, in preparation for her birthday. Yeah! J/C Forever! :)

John Serafino

When people complain about the "reset button" on this episode this comes to mind. I don't think everyone sees the irony.. All Annorax had to do to end his 200 years of suffering was turn the weapon on itself and undo everything it had ever done. Rick was right... this was the only way "out" of the episode because it was the whole point of the episode. Turning the weapon on itself would give Annorax exactly what he spent centuries trying to use the weapon to achieve. But it's Voyager! Of course Janeway had to ram it.

John Serafino

Nemesis was systematic brainwashing and gaslighting and other tactics... that probably would have reprogrammed anyone (except of course a Vulcan). This episode is more what you describe.

Rebecca Anderson

Everytime I hear "Stephanie from around Seattle" I'm like, "where is she?!?" Because I was born in Seattle and now live on the eastside.

Jennifer Barnett

I'm trying to figure out why it changed from 'Stephanie from Seattle' to 'around Seattle' and 'the Seattle area'. 😂

Robert Picard

Interesting timing to watch this episode. Good call on Georgia.

The Real Andrew Kim

im surprised this was not brought up, I thought the most genius stroke of this storyline was Anorak's blindness for 200 years that HE, Anorak himself, and the Time Ship were the missing/corrupting component of his calculations, it was only when the Time Ship itself was removed from history that the time line that Anorak was chasing was restored. That realization was the look on his face when he sees the lock of hair disappear and then he accepted to let the incursion happen. I thought it was brilliant to make Anorak blind to this fact and it blew my mind.

ST Fan CB

Chakotay would beat the living hell out of swarmy Tom Paris.

Rachelle H

Yes all Life is valuable! All living 'organism'. No matter how small!
