Super late on this episode, but were you guys serious about the part about the Borg being at FIRST CONTACT is complicated and you don't understand why they wrote it? Garret summarizes the movie FIRST CONTACT and even suggests they may have done it as a setup to a movie... this episode was filmed not long after Star Trek: First Contact premiered... If you were joking, ya got me! LOL

walkerius logos

1) It's not the basis of every atrocity ever. For example several massacres in history began with Soldiers trying to hold back an unarmed crowd and a nervous Soldier pulls the first trigger. 2) Sometimes when the 'needs of the many' is imposed it saves lives, ends the war faster, or otherwise provides a more positive outcome. For example, not acting on the information from when 'Enigma' was cracked allowed Allies to continue acting against the Axis without changing their codes until after Normandy was invaded.

walkerius logos

(I know I'm late to this, but whatever) I need to be the 15th person to say, "AAAAAA, you haven't seen FIRST CONTACT?!? AHHHHH" But also guys, remember, RDM is watching Voyager for the first time, and GW couldn't watch TNG after Code of Honor, so of course they don't remember First Contact. On a different note, how do they say "Captain, main power is offline," right after going to warp? Like, how does that make sense?

SnazzyO

I loved these two episodes. They are a series highlight for me. Because it is again ‘high concept’ and we learn more about our characters (even if they don’t render the events, we see how they respond — example, Tuvok shaving). Part 1 - ‘Looks like a water treatment facility’ comment. Okay that also use to cross my mind. - Janeway not hightailing it out of Krenim space after the first major attack — never explained. - I loved the slow degradation - The paper mache as warped walls looked good to me. I get that once you ‘see it’ (like Robbie & Garrett saw it up close), it may be difficult to unsee - I loved the compensation efforts: bunking together, mess hall as new sick bay, transverse bulkheads, etc. We have a clever crew with a lot of grit.

Lizika Marrée-Mills

okay but year of hell wpuld have SLAPPED as a season long run

Lizika Marrée-Mills

a key part of this podcast is the voyager writers making up a random alien race and RDM just saying “who is ____ alien race?? did we come upon them before” and garretts just like “no!!!!!”

Dee McGee

I agree with Robbie that a season arc would have drastically changed the tone like the Dominion arc on DS9. Speaking of DS9, the serious atmosphere came straight from Avery Brooks himself. No-nonsense and no goofing off.

Jeffra

I would have liked to see some acknowledgement of Before and After in this episode. Otherwise, I feel a little gaslit. Like they are all pretending Kes never existed and never shared what she learned during that life speed run with them.

Anna Post

Borg at first contact was an Easter egg for the Movie “First Contact”. Basically the plot of that film.

Dustin Snyder

I was born on May 19th..... we're stubborn AF.

sab ewell

Lol Anna I kept saying this during that whole bit 😂 did they never watch First Contact... Ethan Phillips and Bob Picardo were in that one!

Dean Makin

Been looking forward to your review of this one!

Ericka Birkenstein

The Krenim get teased in the episode where Kes is stuck traveling through time... She briefs Janeway at the end, but then, I think?, they don't even mention that forewarning again.

Daniel de Rooy

Okay, I'm sorry guys. I love you but can I just explain a few things - The krenim timeship basically can erase things from history. For example, they erase the homeworld of the Zol. So it erases that object from time entirely, it's past, present and future. It's all gone. That matter and anything it affected at any point in time, is erased. And with that change, it produces this temporal incursion wave which sweeps through space, altering everything to conform to how the timeline is now. Think of Back to The Future - when Marty or the Doc made a change in the past, things would start to fade away from the future. Same concept, but instead of an immediate change like that, this wave is a physical thing that changes the timeline.

Daniel de Rooy

And to answer Robbie's question about how Voyager is changed at the beginning, Voyager was not the thing erased from history. So as the wave hits us, Voyager enters the new changed timeline - one where the Zol homeworld doesn't technically exist anymore, or more accurately, has never existed. Because of this, the peaceful Zol don't control the sector, the Krenim do and have been attacking us for, presumedly, days/weeks already. Later, when Seven develops temporal shields, that protects us from those changes in the timeline and the wave no longer affects us.

Justin Rhoads

Yeah the Phoenix and the borg comment was referring to the entirety of the Star Trek: First Contact film and it’s plot line. Further… an entire episode of Star Trek Enterprise was written as a direct subplot to the events of the same Star Trek film.

gamenator_2011

At around the 45 minute mark, where they explain how the Borg were involved with the Vulcan's first contact with Earth, how could they not know it was a reference to the Next Generation movie First Contact? Did the First Contact movie not air before that episode? I guess they never watched that movie XD

bakura

I remember watching this with my dad who pointed out if it's possible to recycle matter into the replicator why don't they just recycle the debrie around them.

JR Poole

The Year of Hell season would have been novel for the franchise as DS9 had long arcs VOY could’ve joined them in structure with a whole season story of their own much like the Dominion War. We (the trek audience) would see a whole season Xindi arc later on ENT. With some complaints of DISCO and PICARD not being episodic it’s interesting to hear Voyager would’ve “done it first” but condensed a 26 episode year down to 2hrs. Star Trek storytelling, I feel, can support a multitude of formats whether that’s episodic, movies, 2-3parters, or a season arc. VOY; The Year of Hell (season) probably would’ve been too dark for some audiences though groundbreaking and a really cool dvd box set. 👍🏾

Carole Patterson

Guys, Sevens reference to the Borg being present at First Contact is an Easter egg to the TNG movie. It came out in 1996.

Justin Rhoads

And haha… ugh ya all… that keep asking about “writer error” with Kes knowing the frequency of the torpedo… if you went back and rewatched that episode you’d remember that that timeline NO LONGER EXISTS. Kes was jumping backward in time from the future. And the krenim was one of those moments she jumped back to. But in THIS timeline Kes has not been on Voyager for quite some time. And there would be nothing for anybody to remember about her in this episode. The only thing that can be presumed is that months ago, if is hasn’t been years by now, Kes might have been able to tell them about the krenim when she was restored. But that’s a lot of “ifs” and being able to remember something as random as that torpedo. If anything… the question would be why would Voyager have entered Krenim space at all if Kes had warned them about her glimpse of that future. ☺️

Taisho Rose

Garrett, thank you for mentioning Midnight Diner!!! I miss Japanese food so much! (The Southeastern U.S. isn't a great place to find authentic Japanese restaurants.) I've been to Tokyo, Nagoya, Nara, Osaka, and Kyoto. Each region has its own specialties and I spent a lot of time in izakayas. My fave was Nagoya food which is really spicy and famous for its tasty chicken. I got addicted to Tebasaki wings, Hitsumabushi (grilled eel over rice), and Taiwan Ramen. I hate beer, so my go-to drink was a popular cocktail called Chu-Hai that is comparable to a spritzer. And yes, Ochazuke is great for when you just want something light yet filling. It's a versatile dish to learn to make at home because it's meant to be made out of leftover rice and whatever else you have on hand. The most unappetizing thing I ate in Japan was probably Natto (fermented soybeans). A friend and I also stumbled across a whale restaurant in Tokyo, but I refused to eat there. Everything else was awesome, from the street food down to the boxed sushi from the local department store grocery. If you ever get a chance to travel around Japan, I highly recommend visiting Nagoya as it is a very interesting city that is often overlooked, and you definitely can't leave without eating at an izakaya called Yama-Chan's!

Stephanie Baker

Thanks for a great podcast again. I like episodes about Time.

Andrew Murray

yes, great selection across the franchise when they're done well I especially like the TOS "City on the Edge of Forever", "Tomorrow is Yesterday", the DS9 one with the Ferengi crashing in Roswell, (and the classic of them all "Trials and Tribbleations",) "Yesterday's Enterprise", "Time Squared" (featuring two Picards) and the voyager one where they discover the planet destroyed by an explosion, that Janeway inadvertently causes, and in the last three minutes Torres or Harry realise the thorian radiation (or something) is the cause of the explosion.

Andrew Murray

It would make sense, to shoot this at the end of the season shooting schedule (even though air-date is first quarter of S04), so the set builders don't have to work quadruple overtime to rebuild and re-dress the set for the next episode - this way they basically have end of season hiatus to get it done

Andrew Murray

Does the crew remember the advice the Kes gave them from "Before and After" because she ends up in this very timeline and situation, and is there long enough to gets the phase variant of the quantum torpedo in order to come up with a defense (or at least to adjust their shields).

Andrew Murray

looks like Janeway and chakotay have been rebuilding a steam locomotive, not a warp core. I see Voyager being in Kremin space, distrupting Annorax's work on par with Marty McFly preventing his dad getting hit by Lorraine's father's car, instead causing his Mum to fall for him instead of George. So the "distruption to the timeline" was accidental on Voyager's part - wrong space wrong time (so to speak). That 70's show first run 1998 to 2006. Voyager was 1994 to 2001.

Ericka Birkenstein

Re "Nothing for anyone to remember about her in this episode," I don't think that's quite right. It's been a few months since I watched it but as I recall, the point at which Janeway asks Kes to elaborate on the Krenim is at the end, after she is restored to "our" timeline.

Andrew Murray

My "got'em!" moment is Brent Spiner (Data) with his fist in the air yelling "YESSS!!!" when they're battling Klingons or Romulans or something (I forget the movie or episode, but it must have been at the point where he has the emotion chip (so it may have been "Generations" or later movies, I don't know).

Andrew Murray

"First Contact" released 1996, this (season 4 ) of Voyager was (approx) 1998 - but then who's to say what account of "first contact day" was recorded by the time Voyager came along. Certainly the Enterprise can't mention it in a Captain's Log otherwise they'd have Temporal Investigationsbreathing down Picard's neck. In fact I'm surprised they didn't. They show up concerned about Sisko and crew's little adventure to the NCC1701 to deal with a Tribble-ling situation.....

Andrew Murray

What they could have done is 2-part "Year of Hell" and run that straight into "The Killing Game" 2-parter.

Rob Salvaggio

The wave that travels after the Krenim uses the weapon isn't an attack and the ripple of changes from the species being eradicated. No one other than that species would be destroyed (which is why the Ambassador disappeared from the bridge). With the Zall being removed from history the Krenim technology increased which is why their ship got beefy. A result of that ship becoming more beefy was that Voyager took more damage. Unless you're being hit directly by the beam you're not going to take damage UNLESS the changes in the timeline would have caused the damage.

Rob Salvaggio

When Seven mentioned the "Borg were present at those events" in regards to first contact they were talking about the plot to the movie Star Trek: First Contact (TNG Movie) was was released around that time where the Borg went back in time and tried to prevent first contact and had actually succeeded at one second.

Binyomin Silverman

Harry Kim was classmates with Mariner (lower decks) and liked low ranks.

Don Eitner

Agree that an entire season for The Year of Hell would have been, well, Hell. But a 3 or even 4 part arc could have allowed some nice extra details. Harry and B'Elanna could have maybe been trapped in the turbolift for one entire episode to really flesh out the need to keep their minds occupied with trivia.

David Turner

Personally I love a good story about time like the year of hell. Especially of course Dr who when it does which isn’t that often strangely. I use to love and still do a British sci-fi series called sapphire and steel which was about time breaking through the present. Very deep and quite dark but done very cheaply.

Karen Chuplis

I’m supposing it’s a quality issue. Like if something is too degraded it’s not going to work particularly for complex things like medicine.

Karen Chuplis

Ya have to remember to not examine timey wimey logistics to carefully EVER. They just basically don’t work.

Karen Chuplis

OK here is my thing for you guys about Kes, at least how I see it. In Before and After, clearly, this happened. It was an existing event. She is able to get that reading, to help HER stop time jumping, but clearly this happened. She gives the captain this info and they DO avoid it ultimately (OK big spoiler for next week but surely everyone here has seen the pt 2). But this IS the original encounter. Again, it's a timey wimey thing. But it is the way it happened, it had to happen for Kes to have experienced it in Before and After. Isn't this the time paradox that is always presented in a "time episode"? It has to have happened in order to avoid it not happening.

Craig Drebit

Robbie - is that a custom new trucker hat? I love it.

Irene Artho

Movie Generations. He shouts "YES!" and does a fist pump at the defeat of the Duras sisters (Klingons) :)

Lisa Minnesma

That ending improv was hilarious 🤣 🤣!! Is Chakotay being probed too? Yeah but he sorta likes it. Lol!

B obrien

This whole story was a head scratcher

Samantha

I never liked that 'needs of the many' thing. It's fine for self sacrifice, but when imposed is the foundation of every atrocity ever. The last ep the aliens lived by it. One ship with a few dead crew from experiments is a tiny sacrifice for greater good.

Samantha

YOH is one of the best so I knew Robbie wouldn't be crazy about it. 😉

Samantha

I agree about being glad it wasn't a whole season, because I do enjoy Trek as an episodic thing. Enterprise season three is basically the season long YOH concept and I enjoyed it, but rarely revisit anything from it. But remember too that they packed a season into two eps. Things would have been much more gradual. Also, the audience loves their dirty gritty Voyager eps, so. It might have worked, idk. If the ending would've been the same, I'm definitely glad it wasn't a whole season. (without spoilers)

Samantha

I would be super curious to hear a writer talk about the Kes thing. The writers duplicated so many details from Before and After that they could not possibly have just forgotten about it. They just erase Kes from it. The timeline she jumped to ceased to exist when she left Voyager, which retroactively erased many other things. In short, Before and After as we know it no longer exists in this timeline. We can still watch it, just like YOH. But the characters remember things differently. That's my best theory. Or it was just an executive decision or something. Would love to know for sure.

Mary Jac Greer

Garrett: Just heard Garrett talking about Jessica falling in the well. Well, my husband and I were on call for orthopedics that weekend in Midland when they pulled her out. Random thought. Small world

AM Marquez

Love Robbie's hat -- how 'bout them Dawgs!

Christopher Collins

It was interesting hearing behind the scenes of making the set look damaged.

Taisho Rose

I remember when that happened. My family was living in Plano, TX and I was in 1st grade. We were all glued to the television. I had nightmares about falling down tiny pipes. I don't recall ever seeing the TV movie, though.

Amanda Hobson

I know that this is pretty lame to bring up in this group but remember Kurtwood Smith's Star Trek lineage also includes Star Trek 6 Undiscovered Country too. Just thought I would mention it.

Smith

Midnight Diner was great. The tea rice is Ochazuke not Chazuke.

Christinaof9

I can't comprehend any criticism of Year of Hell Parts I or II. It should have been released to theaters as a cinematic event. That's all. 😵

Luise

Garrett had all the one-liners in this episode. "it's the USS Bulletin Board" and "you're gonna get probed by the aliens" had me giggling loudly in public.

Christine Pabst

YOH is a great twoparter. But I wished they have used Kes' logentry / report from 'Before and After'. Janeway would have recognized them in the first place, get the temporal shields earlier... Would have changed the story a bit, but totally ignore it leave some questions.

Sierra C

Midnight Diner is a fantastic show! There's actually a few other seasons that happened prior to the ones that aired on Netflix. The English translation of the title of the show is Shinya Shokudo, and it first aired in 2009.

Joseph Zodda

I have always enjoyed this 2 parter. Has there been anything that Kurtwood Smith is in that is not good? Not for myself. If they had gone with a full season arc it would have been interesting. It would have been a vastly different show. I loved the Krenim ships getting bigger or smaller depending on the shifts in the time line.

Will H

I'm sure this has been pointed out but if not, Seven's reference to the Borg being present during the warp flight and first contact with the Vulcans was the First Contact movie. Also calling the pandemic the Year Of Hell is accurate, pretty sure there's a meme out that shows 2020 and 2021 and shows the title screen cap from each episode, Year of Hell pt 1 (2020) and Year of Hell pt 2 (2021) 😂

Will H

Ok still getting used to patreon, just noticed the load more comments button, nvm my last if someone posted already lol

Ja Dav

In-universe, there is simply not a chance in hell (pardon the pun) that the Q would allow the Krenim to make the kind of alterations to reality that this episode portrays.

ST Fan CB

It has been said before but I will say it again - when all episodes are complete, you guys should totally publish a book with all of your limericks, haikus and poetry. I would absolutely buy that. Maybe also include the script(s) for the Christmas special podcasts. Awesome sauce. Yes I said that. RDM misses his chance to blame Janeway for the trouble they are in as he has done (mostly rightly so) in the past. Sometimes she goes around sections of space and sometimes she insists on going through even when threatened. Once again here, she tries to force her way through the space of a hostile species and pays for it dearly. Janeway continues to prove she is a horrible captain by being blinded by her overwhelming desire to get her crew home due to her fuckup in caretaker and making her crew suffer even more. Again, not fair or cool to make fun of special effects in use 25 years ago. They did their best. Come on man. Reference above but I want to jump in as well. Seven is clearly referencing the events in the movie ST:First Contact. I really think the boys need to go with a 1 to 5 rating system. They never go below 5 and never above 8. The rating system should be: 5 - Outstanding 4 - Above Average 3 - Average 2 - Below Average 1 - Terrible

Megan Moore

Not sure if someone else mentioned this but Year if Hell part 1 aired in 1997 and That 70s show aired in 1998. Now I don’t know exactly when that means they were filmed. I don't think you all having a sense of humor and goofing off all the time makes you less mature. You still got the job done and were professional when the time called for it.
