It’s a good episode. I have no problem with the neural interface being limited. My head cannon on this is that the personality profiles in the holodeck were fairly superficial, which is why the underlying personality aspects of our crew were starting to deep through. So while they thought they were the people in the simulation, their instincts, their basic personality types underneath their circumstances were the same. Which, if true, means Janeway will use deadly force to protect her people without batting an eye.

I think Tom almost shooting Harry in this episode was payback for Harry almost bludgeoning Tom to death in that alien prison.

Lee Stroud

A shout out to the Ambassadors’ humor from 2129 miles southeast of Seattle❤️. I’m always impressed by the intelligence of your questions, but now I’m adding your senses of humor to the list.

Dee McGee

I agree, Robbie. When are we going to learn fighting is dumn.

Tae Phoenix

My bet - Robbie would be a great Ferengi!

Rich Gross

Quote of the podcast episode: Robbie: "I don't remember what I did last week!"

Rich Gross

It's great to see how much the guys are having fun with the "distances from Seattle" gag. And to Stephanie Baker: I promise you, the idea was meant only in fun and as an homage to you!

Samantha

I think Seven thought of singing for the Hirogen as an exercise in humiliation, and she has her pride. And that 'environment doesn't disappear when the characters disappear' thing always bugged me.

Stephanie Baker

I’m imagining Tom as a Talaxian ‘Parix’ and Harry as a Klingon ‘Hartok’. And Tuvok was probably ‘Tuvoque’ a Vulcan

Mike Gu

My favorite line was from Rebecca regarding Harry’s big bruise: “Well, he’s only an Ensign.”

Jennifer Z

What kind of accreditation would the Delta Flyers degree come from? My guess would be "galactically accredited."

Trine Våbenø (Triyan)

I am 4341 miles east from Seattle. Harry should have his own holodeck program, being a Klingon with his own pet targ.

1917 is made to look like a one take movie but there are over 30+ cuts in the movie

There are a lot of animals that utilize either synchronous or simultaneous hermaphroditism (ie they possess both male and female sex organs). Some types of simultaneous hermaphrodites self-fertilize, while others require a partner. When they mate, they exchange sperm and each lays eggs. This helps ensure genetic diversity. If they are synchronous hermaphrodites they spend part of their lives as one gender, then switch. More often, the change happens only once. For example, clown fish all start out as male, then change into females. A school of clownfish is always built into a hierarchy with a female fish at the top. When she dies, the most dominant male changes sex and takes her place. Kobudai do the opposite. Some species, including gobies, can change sex back and forth. The transformation may be triggered by age, size, or social status. There was a movie from 1985 called Enemy Mine starring Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. where Gossett's character was an alien whose species self replicate. While stranded on a hostile planet with a human (Quaid), it becomes pregnant & has a baby. Maybe the Hirogen do the same? https://animals.mom.com/list-hermaphrodite-animals-2829.html

One other observation. The bruise/injury on the left side of Harry's face is there from Part 1, when the Hirogen smacked him. It's size and location varied as the episodes wore on. Initially, it was just a little blood up by his eye. Later it appears larger and farther down his face.

I'm sure Star Trek (generally) did recaps on two-part episodes whether they were during the season but especially if they were split over seasons, as the finale and next season opener. I recall that for TNG anyway with their split two parts (like The Best of Both Worlds) and usually Majel Barrett did the voice over.

Andrew Murray

Chakotay (don't recall the episode) mentions the Australian indigenous peoples, but only in the context of their spirituality and connection with the land but also in connection with his people and vision quests

Andrew Murray

As far as Holodeck scenarios are concerned, I'd prefer it as Trek does it - give me DaVinci, Dixon Hill or Captain Proton any day.

Stephanie

Very nice of you Robbie to help a pregnant Roxann over the ruble pile at the end. Always thought that was a nice touch.

Michelle Z

I'm always so happy when you wear the Voyageur hat Robbie <3

Jeff deRhodes

I need a sonic shower after that episode. 😜

Bree Boehlke

It’s funny you bring up TCM. My mother is obsessed with old movies and she basically keeps cable just for that channel. When I was pulling up CBS All Access to show my folks the new Star Trek shows, my father went, “oh my goodness, I didn’t know we had a color TV!” It was such a father move.

Back in 1998 or 99 in Chicago a local theater did a special viewing of It’s A Wonderful Life. They had the woman that played Zuzu, Karolyn Grimes come and speak to us before the viewing and she talked about what it was like on set etc. Then she sat down and watched the film with us. It was so much fun to see it on the big screen. Grimes was in another classic, The Bishop’s Wife.

Tae Phoenix

I need a “Delta Flyers Academy Alumni” sweatshirt.

Irene Artho

My thinking of Seven refusing to sing is that remembering her songs - maybe even her voice training - were part of the neural interface programming and even if she wanted to, she probably wouldn't have been able to sing the songs. The most beautiful voice doesn't help if you don't remember how to use it. Additionally I was about to point out that they don't use Fahrenheit in the UK (the "weather" report mentions 59 which definitely can't be Celsius) but apparently they did use F not C until 1962.

Olivia Peel

My favorite detail from these episodes is that Janeway, Tuvok, B’Elanna, and Seven are all Maquis—the French resistance fighters in WWII that the Trek Maquis are named for. So we end up with Janeway as a Maquis cell leader and Chakotay as a military Captain. It’s a fun little role reversal and I’m surprised they don’t call attention to it in the episode.

Tashicat

I swear Chakotays tribe is called the Rubber Tree People but maybe Im remembering that out of context

Tashicat

I'm guessing the hide the jews episode hinted at is counterpoint

Clark Ochikubo

Kudos to the Admirals with their gag of geolocating in relationship to Seattle… loved it!!! But is it really a joke? I think that in the Delta Flyer Universe, Seattle is located at coordinates 0-0-0…

Delta Flyers Academy Grad - setting a course barefoot in the cold from the array to home

Rochelle Mazar

So much love to you guys, so, so much, but why oh why do Americans think they invented democracy? I'm baffled. The term itself is a French word with a Greek origin, which is a pretty big clue right there. But to really blow your minds: did you know that the US constitution was inspired by the Haudenosaunee Great Law of Peace that united the six nations? Everything's a reboot these days!

Luise

Now I *really* want Picard-era edgy Harry complaining about being stuck in the Delta Quadrant barefoot and in the snow. Make it happen, Paramount.

Luise

"Oh right, Ensigns don't get healthcare" - I laughed. Also I laughed at Walter stretching and showing us his butt.

Luise

I think the Hirogen being the most toxically masculine species in the Galaxy and being just dudes going on hunting trips together is pretty much spot on. They seem positively unhinged. Their females are probably sitting on a planet somewhere having a nice tea party.

Tara

That sounds very familiar. I think your'e right.

Barbara MacDonald

Also... from slightly east of Seattle, I'm very pleased to see home represented properly as the reference point of the universe. PM Stephanie Baker, I'd love to have you as part of our Trek community. And the rest of you too, of course, we at Watch Trek, Look Forward are global, after all. :)

ST Fan CB

Saying it again - ST ALWAYS did a recap for every 2 part episode. Come on man. Garrett gets 10 cool points for the use of the 25 cent word "exacerbate" . Very nice and well done. Garrett incorrect by trying to split hairs. ALL German Soldiers are Nazis, not just the ones in the SS. True not ALL Germans were members of the Nazi party but that is a distinction without a difference. Just like ALL Soviet Union, North Korean or North Vietnam soldiers are communists. Just like ALL US Soldiers are "Americans" or "Yanks" even though there was and still is a lot of non US Citizens in the military and obviously not all were from the North. "The biggest argument against it is that yes, technically not all members of the military, or even of the Waffen-SS later in the war, were party members. People like to point out that we don't call the US Army "Democrat soldiers" or something similarly pithy. The flipside here, however, is that while the US is a liberal democracy where our leadership is freely elected in fair elections, Nazi Germany was a single-party authoritarian state where the party was synonymous with the state, and it would be quite hard to differentiate between the two. So while saying that the party in power in the US is not the same as the state itself, you really can't say the same with Germany during WWII. A soldier, party member or not, draftee or not, true believer or Social Democrat at heart, was nevertheless fighting for the interests of the Nazi party just as much as for the interests of Germany, if not more so depending on how you weigh matters." Tuvok tells the American Soldiers that they have weapons hidden around town and tells Torres to show them. Why does the American Army need more weapons? Don't they have all they need?

Rachelle H

Singing is very vulnerable and Seven is not at that point in her humanity yet to let that vulnerability show. She would rather die than to show vulnerability.
