The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Hope and Fear:

I admit I am weary of ‘teen Seven’. On the one hand, I had zero problem with her irrational desire to stay in the Delta quadrant. But her opening crankiness was just … I’m over it. However, her fears and the way it was handled in the brig scene was perfect for ‘mother/daughter.’ I liked the optic of Janeway working her Borg implant (sort of like the parental intimacy of combing your teen’s hair). And Janeway’s speech was PERFECT. As was Seven’s humor. So that was worthwhile. Other notes: ‘Neelix and Tom go on a supply run …’ seems like the start of fun bit of mischief. I like those two as a team. Neelix negotiating, Paris watching his back and keeping the ball rolling. And I also liked Harry & Tom laughing on the bridge. So relaxed and ‘right.’ Tuvok’s wit was on point as always and apparently Tom & B’Elanna made a new slipstream drive on the graveyard shift. Most impressive. We could have used a little more Chakotay and Harry but what we got was good. So I’m with RDM. This was an 8. I take points off for the initial conflict during Velocity and the ‘overnight slipstream capability’. But it was a good finale.

Maybe the nice snack attendant’s nickname (“Chacho”) may have come from “Muchacho”—which is a Spanish word for “boy”

Doni Marie Sanchez

“Gods beauty” thank you Garrett for not shying away from saying that. ❤️ Nature is one of his greatest gifts to us

Rich Gross

The references to nothing happening on the night shift are always funny to me. Night, and time in general, has no reference or relevance in space. There should be no reason any particular shift should be less busy than another, other than logistical tasks assigned to a given shift.

Don Eitner

There's also no reason why ships should always meet each other the same way up.

Andrew Murray

Paramount+ thumbnail of 4.26 doesn't help much.

Andrew Murray

Is this the ep about the star ship that appears to be a new-fangled Star fleet vessel that is actually nothing of the sort.

Andrew Murray

That alien's not the "first" being one to have a knack for alien languages, if you count Hoshi in "Enterprise" in the days before the universal translator was even a thing.

Andrew Murray

"NX-01A" curious if that was it's identification number, years before "Enterprise" comes along with NX-01

Andrew Murray

didn't "something happen" when Harry brings on board the "amnesic" robot/torpedo thing that just about destroys the ship. That was also the night shift.

Andrew Murray

so is Slipstream faster than Warp 10? At least you don't end up as lizards this time.

Andrew Murray

The one thing I don't get is they head back to Borg Space, Voyager can only do warp 9.975, and only for short times, in "The Gift", Kes threw them 10,000 light years (whatever it was) from Borg space. I forgot they have some sort of slip-stream drive in the works. I thought that only featured in "Timeless" (S5.06), I guess the drive gets them to rescue Seven and Janeway, leaves Arturiis to his fate and "slipstreams" back to where they were.

Andrew Murray

I guess another season finale cliffhanger (two-parter) of Voyager "stuck" in Borg space would be just rehashing already told stories.

Andrew Murray

speaking of lounge, couldn't the cast that wasn't shooting hang out in the Mess hall?

Andrew Murray

Robbie gets Chewbacca-level grouchy when he loses - pulling-droids-arms-out-of-their-sockets grumpy?

Andrew Murray

"Fear" is the clown that was fearful of Janeway in the end.

Luise

Wait, was this filmed earlier? Roxann is wearing her rad lab coat that was used to hide her baby belly...

Luise

The sausage tube of space.

Janet Potts

I don't find it unusual for the captain to play a sports game with Seven. Both Picard and Sisco engaged in such extracurricular activities with subordinates on their respective shows. Plus, having been in the military, I (as a lieutenant) frequently played racquetball with enlisted staff members. The only taboo would be interpersonal relationships between any enlisted and officer or between people in the same chain of command.

William McEvoy

I think Janeway was right about helping the Borg to defeat 8472. Didn't they threaten to "purge" all life from the galaxy?

Monica McLaughlin

No mention of Ray Wise in Who Watches the Watchers? Loved that episode of TNG!

Christinaof9

I think Seven did have those moments of vulnerability with Janeway and they were very moving and poignant, just subtle. If you aren't reading the body language and tone of voice you will sometimes miss it but those big breakthrough moments were there and in this episode in particular it was reflected in the end scene. There was trust built and Seven took walls down when they were captive, for one... I think it's a tribute to Jeri Ryan's acting ability that she was able to give those vulnerable breakthrough moments while keeping Seven's rough edges and confusion regarding humanity. Great episode and podcast!

Bob Orlic

Ray Wise is just an amazing Actor. The final scene where he's sitting on the bridge of the Dauntless with a phaser wound to his gut, helplessly as his ship is surrounded by Borg... Just heartbreaking. Loved this episode.

Ms Nike Morgan

Watching you guys lifts my spirits! Thank you . . .

Kris Hansen

I really want an illustration of the sausage tube of space...

James Morrow

Sausage tubes in space reminded me of Pigs in Space from The Muppet Show :-). Btw, thank you to Megan for the job she did editing this episode. It really flows and I appreciate her hard work :-). I can’t imagine how challenging it must be to get all TDF video pieces together and out on time. Megan and Rebecca deserve an extra pip on their collars ;-).

Jonathan Day

Is no one going to mention Ray Wise’s star turn as BOB on Twin Peaks?

Len

Can someone send a link to Robbie’s short films?

When I was a student in the Army Military Police Officer Advanced Course, our General came to give us a talk about his vision for the future. In this future, he envisioned Military Police aboard space ships and stations keeping the peace, etc. All I could think of was "Pigs....In.....Space!!!!). I could barely keep from laughing.

ST Fan CB

2nd limerick is more betterest. I wonder if the writers crafted the Seven and Janeway conflict into the scripts because the real life conflict between the two actors. By all reports throughout the years and by Kate's own admission, she was a complete bitch to Jeri Ryan and made life on the set very rough so much that it affected the other actors in some reports. Additionally, they probably gave Jeri (Seven) "the wins" because Kate (Janeway) always had the upper hand in real life. Garrett is correct as it is Voyager that turns off to the right or Starboard as Cdr Chakotay orders. Why do we have to keep revisiting the issue of whether or not Voyager should have helped the Borg in their fight against 8472? It has already been established many times that 8472's goal was to wipe out ALL life in the galaxy and would have, had the Borg with Voyagers assistance not stopped them. So choice would have been to have NO chance against 8372 or SOME chance against the Borg.
