The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Drone. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Drone:
A transporter accident merges Seven's nanoprobes with The Doctor's mobile emitter, causing an extremely advanced Borg drone to be created; Seven discovers her maternal nature as she raises and educates the young drone.

This is one of my favorite Voyager episodes. Makes me cry at the end every time I see it!

Jen V

What about Jonathan Frakes as a director?

SnazzyO

Brutal episode. Lots of heart. I love Neelix’s role in the life of One. The Doctor should not be popping into B’Elanna’s bathroom and Seven should get a privacy screen at a minimum. I found the Doctor kinda pervy (back in the late 90’s) although that wasn’t the intent.

"This ship will freeze over before we give Harry a promotion!"

Dee McGee

New patreon member here. Met Garret at STLV 2023. Hoping to see Robbie at Spacecon San Antonio later this year.

Whoa! Same Room!! ...Wait, I liked this on Instagram two months ago! Lol!

GAY Kleven-Lundstrom

I know it is a long shot; but is it possible to get J. Paul Boehmer on your podcast? He did a few episodes of Voyager and a couple on Enterprise. Thanks.

Peggy

Yay!!!

Andrew Murray

the only involvement of the doctor is complaining that he's stuck in Sickbay.

Andrew Murray

Just saw this ep the other day - it was a transporter "glitch". The doc was concerned damage to the about the emitter, so Harry took it to the science lab to fix it. But left for the night, then the nano-probes already infecting in the emitter then proceeded to assimilate the science lab station. It was more a "Tuvix" thing than the "Body and Soul" thing. The human side of the drone was from another crew member - sampled DNA, but not fully assimilated.

Andrew Murray

Seven suggests Torres design a new shuttle - that project eventually falls to Harry and Tom basically with Torres less than interested (in "Extreme Risk").

Andrew Murray

Wouldn't transporter operations come under Engineering - so Mulcahey is Be'lanna's staff.

Andrew Murray

what about that one where Tuvok's nightmare is of him turning up naked on the bridge - everyone just laughs. How is that not sexist? Everyone brushed that one off as a joke - apparently from Tim Russ's doing (off-camera).

Andrew Murray

I assume Harry on night-shift acting-captain bridge watch means he wasn't on normal day shift doing his normal duties as well. In "Thirty Days" when Paris is demoted, and thrown in the Brigg for challenging and breaking the Prime Directive, they should have made Harry Lieutenant and Conn Officer for the month.

Andrew Murray

The clean plate is like the background shot in Garret's scene behind him in this video. "Plate" probably coming from the old photographic terminology, before photographic or movie film (typically 35MM or 70MM) film as we know it today, photographs were shot on plates of glass, covered in the light-sensitive material

bakura

Can't say I ever recall a borg facing outward in an alcove sorry robbert.

Andrew Murray

How about the actor-directors (including any Trek cast members that directed Voyager - Robbie, Roxanne (Dawson), Tim (Russ), Bob (Picardo) (and Levar Burton too.?) What was their methodology - imaginative or "lets get the shot and move on"?

sab ewell

Mulcahe is in gold. They generally are Engineers/ops/transporter people lol so that's why she gets his help. He wasn't busy at the time once they were onboard.

Dean Makin

So crazy how weird it was seeing you both sat together in the same room. Lovely though.

Luise

Regarding the Asian background actor Garrett pointed out: Maybe it's just the point the video was paused at, but he also looks *severely* unimpressed with One. It's hilarious.

DebbieD

I love seeing you guys together!

Mara

Harry was the head of the Operations department, the department he was trained for. Transferring the trained head of a department to be the head of another department where they have no training is bad management.

Samantha

Ha, yes, seven was mad about being caught in what she would consider to be a weak moment. She doesn't like showing weakness.

Meagan Wright

Loved seeing you both in the same room too. But I would have loved to see the whole this with you two together. Why didn't you do this?

TheDeltaFlyers

We would have loved to have recorded the whole podcast in the same room, but we only had time to record the intro. Unfortunately, I had to fly back to LA for an appointment. ~~garrett

Jenna Ballentine

I think the borg drones you saw facing inwards were using the urinals, not regenerating..

Taisho Rose

I can't believe I have to explain this, but it's all about context. Tuvok's body was not objectified and the camera didn't linger on his nude form. Nudity by itself is not necessarily sexual or sexist. Being naked in front of a crowd is a common fear/ nightmare people of both genders share. Television and film are definitely skewed towards the male gaze. I had a friend who studied television production in college and a few years ago she invited me to see a screening of her class' final projects. She was only one of a handful of women in the class and the rest were men. The stuff many of the male students got away with portrayed women in a really exploitative, inappropriate and uncomfortable manner, and they never got in trouble for it. And imagine, that's before anyone's career has even begun. I for one am glad that people are now calling things out for what they really are. Was B'Elanna being naked necessary to the plot at all? No, but Tuvok dreaming he was naked on the bridge represented his anxiety.

James Morrow

It does my heart good to see G n’ R so happy and enjoying each other’s company so much. Thank you to Megan for her hard work editing this episode!

AM Marquez

Would have loved to see some footage of the two of you watching the game, particularly the interception at the end. Many GA fans uploaded videos of themselves at that moment of the game, they've been hilarious to watch. Would have been great to see Robbie's reaction. Signed, Voyager Fan Who Also Loves Football

David McMullen

Great to see both Roby and Garrett in the same room can't wait to see a full episode with them in the same room.

John Serafino

I was enjoying this until the question about "sexism" in the Admiral's Transwarp section. I feel sorry for people who need to find an evil "ism" lurking in every action. The mentality of victimhood doesn't make the world a better place. Quite the contrary. Does the world seem like a better place to anyone? I can really do without the woke"ism" that creeps in sometimes. Now, smile like I know you can.

Daniel

" I feel sorry for people who need to find an evil "ism" lurking in every action"..."I can really do without the wokeism"

John Serafino

This-ism, that-ism, is-m, is-m, is-m. To quote a famous former Beatle.

John Serafino

There, I fixed it... sarcasm was lost without the quotes.

William McEvoy

Crimson is the the enemy?? I think not, Good Sirs!

Saskia Cowan

Late to the party, but in TNG when the Borg first appear they do occasionally face inwards when regenerating, but I think they decided pretty quickly to drop it and just had them facing outwards.

Sarah Mears

I am slowly catching up, and just started watching this podcast, but wanted to comment about Seven's annoyance at the beginning which appeared to be an issue for Robbie in the podcast. She makes it very clear in the dialogue why she is annoyed. She asks the Doctor to knock or announce himself before entering the cargo bay - ie. HER QUARTERS. It is not her fault she has to use the alcoves, which are too big for normal quarters. For the time being this cargo bay is the only personal space she has, and everyone just comes and goes as they please without any consideration to her personal space and privacy, which is the right of every other crew member... except the Doctor, but even he has some level of control over his own activation etc. She seems to have no rights to privacy. Something that always upset me when VOY was on the air. The Doctor just barged in during a private moment she was having, doing something she didn't want anyone to see her doing. That is why she was annoyed. I support her feelings 100%.

Sarah Mears

Just finished the podcast and want to say one more thing. To compare Seven with One in terms of personality is unfair. Seven spent nearly 20 years as a Borg drone connected to the collective. One has only lived as an individual. He is literally days old, not 20+ with years of experience. Again, I think Seven has experienced plenty to justify her attitude and personality at this point in the series. The influences she has had over her life time are vastly different than those of One. What I love about this ep is that it is a huge emotional turning point for Seven. She experiences true affection for another individual and her first loss of someone she cares about. Very important to her character growth.

ST Fan CB

Its a cargo bay. People have to come in all the time and get stuff or store stuff. If Seven has progressed to the point of having modesty then she should ask for a closed off portion of the bay for privacy. Don't get mad when you don't ask for things and then are not given them.
