The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Night. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Night:
Voyager enters an expanse of space where no stars are visible that will take two years to cross; the lack of starlight causes morale issues with the crew; Janeway questions the choices that stranded her crew far from home.

Wearing my new The Delta Flyers Tee and drinking from my Captain Proton Mug to watch this episode made my week. Thanks for the joys.

SnazzyO

Good episode. Good podcast. Nice commentary on mental health and environmental issues.

Stefan Au

lol getting MAJOR LotR vibes from the last bit of this podcast episode: "awww... they look tashty!"

Dee McGee

I didn't know until the Delta Flyers Podcast that Garrett doesn't play the clarinet.

Rich Gross

I NEED that “Captain Proton” graphic!! Good job, Rebecca!! :)

Don Eitner

Captain Proton: Origins

James Morrow

Set phasers to poop! Rebecca, thank you for those wonderful Rebeccanimations. I loved Proton and Buster, but the poop aliens were my favorite. Also, great job editing this episode! I’ve often wondered how long it takes to edit one of these episodes-especially when we send in so many questions that you guys then have to work through. Thank you!!

Mr Paris

I thought they looked like melting chocolate, not poop. Best comment I ever left! lol

Andrew Murray

Harry on bridge watch "night shift"...? That's gonna be a long 2 years.....

Andrew Murray

Voyager back-tracked something like 10,000 LY with the quantum slip-stream drive, to borg space, when Seven didn't want to go back to Earth, but then the used the Quantum Slipstream to resume their journey, until it burned out, but I'm sure they still didn't recover the distance Kes had sent them, and then the distance beyond that either.

Andrew Murray

Episode thumbnail on paramount+ shows Seven and Captain Proton.

Andrew Murray

McGee or Magee? As in Timothy from NCIS!

Andrew Murray

I assume the captain proto sequences would have been filmed in black and white - or camera filters (?) used or just printed in B & W? Keep forgetting, Voyager was before the time of sophisticated computer editing techniques.

Andrew Murray

Tom's like "what wouldn't I give for a Class-2 nebula or a Y-class planet or two!"

Andrew Murray

If Kes was still around I'd make her Morale officer.

Andrew Murray

Proton definitely inspired by Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers (both played by Buster Crabbe) 1930's style not era not 1980's Gil Gerard era.

Andrew Murray

I know "Guten Tag" and "Guten Nacicht" :)

Chad Heroman

This isn't about Voyager, it's about Resident Alien. Why are we pushing lies to make people made at each other? Just like the constant race hustling the Left does to get each other pissed off, the newest episode of Resident Alien is pushing the wage gap myth! Also, Harry beat up the guy who was hitting on him when he was pretending to be a woman, why? As far as we know, those two hook up on a normal basis. So now a guy wanting to hook up with a casual sex partner is assualt on females? So sick of the Left trying their best to cause people to hate each other

Samantha

Seven and Neelix run sick bay together. Neelix has a home remedy for everything.

Courtney Lucas

Woohoo! Season five, the year of the t-shirt! Glad that you guys like it, we’re going to see a lot of it 😂

Abra Lindstrom

I played clarinet and always appreciated Garrett's attention to detail in those scenes!

Griffin

I thought they were going to swap poetry this season?

Anna Post

If you have to troll, please do it somewhere else. This is not the community for that.

Craig Main

Die Hard line 😂😂 Yippee-kay-ay Malon-f…

N+D

I always liked this episode. Atmospheric, nice character work. Good work all.

Lisa Minnesma

Janeway and Chakotay both in a t-shirt. Meaning what? I’m confused

Lisa Minnesma

I laughed at that too! It’s not where I thought he would go with that question 😆

Torry Haag

If I recall correctly, Tom wore the T-shirt in 30 days, when he's in the brig.

Scott Lakes

Regarding your opening comments, this video podcast has brought a lot of happiness and joy to a lot of people. Thank you.

Tashicat

to me the aliens look like gourmet chocolate. imo the race that looks like poop, are those Heirarchy folks the that hack the emh's daydreams, they look like turds

Tashicat

also, the whole dude will be out of business irks me so much because he could turn around and sell the technology from voy or even keep the secret and rent his services and not only would he still make money, he could stomp his competition because hed be the one with a safer work environment. i just wanna strangle that guy

Ericka Birkenstein

Re: the mental health question, all true that it would be written differently now, BUT worth noting that TNG did have a main cast counselor and so, belatedly (and arguably unhelpfully), did DS9.

Kassandra

Driving a motorcycle in the holodeck? I would definitely do that as well 🥰 Great episode guys and I am so looking to all the German language lessons 😀 Greetings from Germany

Christopher Collins

I love the reactions to Captain Proton. Robbie did a great poetry Limerick. I forgot that Garret umped over the rails doing the Picard jump just like Captain Picard did in Yesterday's Enterprise.

Ms Nike Morgan

An exciting episode about 'nothing'!! Really great ep!

Ms Nike Morgan

You think imprisoning the 'garbage man' would have violated the prime directive? So . . . you just . . . killed him! Ha!

Donna S Runyon

Wow, Robbie said the lesson it really hit home

Bronwen Duffield

Just catching up on these (busy few weeks). The Captain Proton origin story is mentioned in the second book of the String Theory trilogy (set between seasons 4 and 5). According to the books, Tom found it while searching for a serial to adapt for the holodeck. It was originally published in 2005, so I'm not sure how close to any original backstory it is. Cannon or not, it's one explanation.

Kendra-rose Playfoot

I'm just thinking maybe the aliens speak German and they didn't have English down so they said "we are the (gut) alien". Had to look it up good in German is spelled gut according to google.

I tried doing a search to see if there was any website out there that would list the featured Voyager crew member for each episode but found nothing. I was trying to see if there was parity or not for each actor to be featured. Anybody know this information? I reviewed the YouTube video again that was mentioned (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E9r7CrxZLk) and here are the big takeaways: 1. The overall Voyager screen time top 3 are in order: Janeway, Doctor and Chakotay. Seven is in the 5th position even though she was only in the last 3 seasons. Neelix is not even on the list having dropped off. 2. Janeway, Doctor and Seven are the top 3 for each of the last 3 seasons. Interesting - screenrant.com states that Garrett Wang regretted being on Star Trek Voyager and says he was denied a directing opportunity on the show. Dirty phrase of the week: "you're fingering was great". I believe the holo emitters in sickbay are there to project the doctor and nothing more. If they were capable of functioning as a holodeck, then I think the Hirogen would have used sickbay for more holodeck room after they took over. What a shitty Captain Janeway is. Puts her crew at risk over and over due to her questionable actions to get the crew home. Now she sits in the dark in her quarters wallowing in self pity and whines and moans over her Caretaker decision while her crew circles the drain and she cant bring herself to get off her ass and be a Captain to them. Voyager is lucky it got home. In regards to the power drain and holodeck, there are 2 facts from the show itself: 1. The holodeck has partial power along with environmental systems. Why would power to the holodeck still be running but not anywhere else on the ship except for environmental? Is the holodeck an essential system or is this a convenient way to have more scenes in the Captain Proton set. 2. The holodeck is frozen. Why is the simulated 20th century flashlight still working? Why did the lights go out? Would not the lights still be on as they were when the program froze? How is a garbage scow in space better armed than an escort class ship?

ST Fan CB

That is incorrect. Yes they went back to borg space but then used the slip stream drive for over 5 hours i think Janeway stated along with her comment that they got something like 300 or so light years closer to home.
