The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Extreme Risk. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week they are joined by Roxann Dawson to get her memories and thoughts on this episode!

Extreme Risk:
Torres's associates are troubled by her increasingly reckless behavior, such as orbital skydiving, and Lt Paris launches a new type of shuttle.

Such a great episode, loved Roxanne’s thoughts. 2023 perspective - they sort of ignore that whole HIPPA thing in the 24th century. I buy into the Chakotay/B’Elanna history made him uniquely able to conduct this intervention. But the lack of ‘I’m glad your feeling better but we need to work out counseling sessions in the future.’ I felt Chakotay was the Ship’s counselor (like Paris was the nurse — it was an additional duty). ‘Coherence’ is a scientific term for RF interaction (super simplified explanation). It has no relationship to ‘it makes sense’ definition of ‘coherent’. I think that Robbie is wearing a thin shirt. I think those are his pecs and the lighting is weird. They aren’t man-boobs because he’s pretty thin.

Dee McGee

Catching up with your podcast as I watch each night.

Christopher Collins

One of my favorite B’Elanna Torres episodes we rarely saw what she was into on the Hollowdeck. This is also the only real time we saw this space suit to jump out of a shuttle used in Star Trek. Kirk attempted it in a deleted scene in Star Trek Generations but this was more realized even if it was short lived. It was also cool how to end a simulation in mid air.

Christopher Collins

I always loved the incorporation of the Captain Proton controls in the Delta Flyer.

Tara

Love the new graphics! Great conversation with Roxann Dawson.

Andrew Murray

"We do need a bigger shuttle, a faster shuttle"..."but we are not building a hot-rod, Mr Paris!".

Andrew Murray

Pity then this shuttle design isn't the norm, in "Picard" for instance. Harry could always have submitted the design to Starfleet on return to Earth. They could have built these by the....docking-bay load or have them like stored in the replicator buffer, and when ever you need shuttles just say "Computer, One Delta Flyer"

Andrew Murray

The only Hollywood "Bob and Bob" I know of are Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale (the team behind Back to the Future with Steven Speilberg) . Michael J. Fox referred to them as "Bob and Bob" in the DVD extras.

James Morrow

What an amazing, super-sized episode!! Rebecca, thank you for the incredible editing work and those new animations! I love the colors!! And thank you guys for including my question in both your initial discussion and then with Roxann. TDF is a gift of happiness that the four of you give us every week and it always makes me smile.

Andrew Murray

Coherent Neutrino beam....basically a FLIR (Forward Looking InfraRed) camera..... with a dash of X-ray.

Andrew Murray

in the beginning, Torres didn't respond to the 'gentle' approach either. e.g. to Tom, obviously concerned or to Neelix, who is probably the next best thing to a counselor sans the college degree, and even that didn't work, nor did her favourite snack-food.

Andrew Murray

I think because this is the delta flyer, inspired by Captain Proton they should have gone with the Proton-speak technobabble. The "lightning shield" or the "destructo-beam" are no match for a few fireworks....er, sorry....spacial charges.

sab ewell

I loved this one sooo much. Thanks to all who made it happen. Special thanks to Roxann for doing this and giving of her time. This was an important episode for her and her character and I'm so glad we got to hear her views on it. Also made me smile like an idiot seeing the three of you together again laughing. The original golden trio before Harry Potter. :)

Andrew Murray

Holographic Counselor - they could well have had Counselor Troi, as a hologram, with the same advanced Holomatrix as the doctor. I'd like to see them fighting over the mobile emitter.....

sab ewell

I did want to say about the Tom and Harry friendship being put to the side, I do think the show handled it well in that they kept those friendships. Harry and B'Elanna still kept a friendship and had moments and Tom and Harry as well. Then there were moments with all three and it wasnt always Tom/B'Elanna with Harry. Sometimes it was B'Elanna with Tom&Harry or vice versa. Lots of times with shows they don't do that and Voyager at least did that right. I also would have loved to see more from Harry's perspective and his feelings shown more on some of these things. It's only natural.

Andrew Murray

It was actually lucky Tom was around on this, otherwise, they'd be still wondering was a farm truck was or an internal combustion engine....and his knowledge of 20th century, they weren't quite the fish out of water in L.A. (Future's End) that Kirk and crew were in "The Voyage Home".

Andrew Murray

How do you "Australia" in Australian English - "OzTraya" (Oz-STRAY-yah)

Matt

As someone who works in the mental health field, Thank You so much Robbie and Garrett for sharing the importance of talking about your feelings, and specifically in a safe place with a trained professional. "You have to feel it to heal it".

Christopher Collins

I liked that the Banana pancakes was Roxane’s contribution

Matt

EMDR is a modality for working through trauma. It's been around since the late 80s, and was created as a way to help trauma survivors with struggle with PTSD and also works wonderfully for many survivors of CPTSD. Has about an 80% success rate overall for helping survivors work through traumatic experiences.

Sarah Kridenoff

Can we get the audio of talking to the dog as a Patreon exclusive?

Caryn Mellom

"Lay down lay down lay down" LOL

Eve England

Haven’t watched the videos for a while - LOVE the new animation!

Tashicat

the new art is gorgeous!!

chesca

Love the new splash screen and great interview with Roxann, she has a heart of gold and this story that she has talked to bring to life is very helpful and still in tune with the times.

Abra Lindstrom

Voyager reunion please! Great to hear from Roxann on this one! Thanks so much!

Tashicat

Im so glad you mentioned that part about the focus correcting because i totally thought it was just me lol

David Turner

Like the new trippy coloured title sequence 😀

Lisa Minnesma

Thank you SO MUCH Robbie and Garrett for having Roxann on the podcast again!!! It literally made my day :D She's the best!!! Tell her thank you for us!

Dan Nelson

Gents - I can't think of any other examples of shows shooting on film still, but The Walking Dead shot on 16mm for almost their entire run. Not sure why this is my only input, but this was a "hey, I know this!" moment so I thought I'd share.

Stephanie

Listening to Roxann this makes me think - What is the gang doing 30 years later. I think ... Tom and B'Elanna are Starfleet top ship designers pairing his flying skills with her engineering. The are currently working on the most advanced Starship ever seen, which will be Captianed by Captain Harry Kim. Tuvok had returned to Vulcan for awhile but even though he will never admit it, he gets bored without humans, so returned to Starfleet and is now Kim's first officer. Janeway is an Admiral and Chacotay is a professor at Starfleet Academy. The Doctor is still a doctor, and somehow Nelix has found a way to travel back and forth from the Delta quadrant. And of course we know what 7 has been up to with Picard. Somethings brewing though and soon everyone is going to be reunited ...

Shanyn Behn

Seven dis-engaged the safety protocols in Night to save her and Tom, from that alien. I don’t think two additional authorizations would have worked in that case.

Andrew Orlowicz

Another one of my top 10 VOY episodes! I totally agree with Robbie’s rating, easily a 9/10. Great B’Elanna centric episode and phenomenal acting by Roxanne, it felt like the whole cast was involved (just wish the Doc and Neelix had a tiny bit more to do). Had plenty of sci-fi, humor, and lots of heart in addressing mental health issues that many people could relate to. AND finally, the birth of the Delta Flyer! I just have one criticism… and that’s that we didn’t get to hear Garrett more during the interview with Roxanne! It was a great interview but I felt a little sad we didn’t get to hear more from you Garrett during the Q+A. I liked the question about favorite childhood food and I liked Roxanne and Robbie’s answers, but was then like “wait what about you Garrett”?! Not mad or anything, I just think it’d be nice to hear you get in on the conversation more :)

Jamason Isenburg

EVERY SINGLE WEEK this podcast gives me SO much happiness! Thanks to all involved! 😃🖖🤘👌👍👍

Samantha

Love Roxann's answer on Chakotay's methods. It never occurred to me to take it as an instruction manual for real life. It's just what would work for that character. And I never thought about the fact that only Chakotay would understand what the program was.

Samantha

And Roxann looks fantastic. She could play B'Elanna in a heartbeat.

Heather Irwin

Great job with the new drawings!

Heather Irwin

I really appreciated that, as Roxann pointed out, the episode was about B'Elanna's experiences, not B'Elanna/Tom's relationship. And I'd like to make banana pancakes now. :)

Bonnie Chiaccio

You guys are literally the heart and soul of Voyager. Hope we get to revisit the characters in the not too distant future!

Kris Hansen

Not pertinent to this episode, but Rhonda Dirr and I were having dinner Saturday night and a man walked into the restaurant who looked SO much like Robbie, except a grayer beard. Robbie, do you have any relatives in the Chicago metro area?

Kris Hansen

Loving the new artwork this week! Run, Harry, run!

Liz Lesperance

Love the new graphics!! And seeing Roxanne answering questions and laughing with the guys was awesome!

Bob Orlic

Love the #ResidentAlien hat Robbie! Also, this episode is an amazing arc for Roxann; coupled with the upcoming Episode 603 Barge of the Dead, we really get some amazing character building for B'Elanna!

Theresa Volz

Fantastic episode! I hope you keep this podcast going after the episodes are done! Great interview with Roxann Dawson! You really are awesome. Thanks for the fun!

Christopher Collins

I like in The Flesh where we get to see Species 8472 the last time on screen and Bothby again.

Nel Z

Actually Boothby reappears in the season five episode "The Fight".

Ms Nike Morgan

The Delta Flyer is crewed by 4 people and delta is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet. Coincidence?

Estelle Keller

My biggest laugh during the interview portion with Roxann was how she mentioned the musical Company and how she apologized to Garrett about it as he was not familiar though she knew Robbie would know exactly the song she was referencing.

Kassandra

I loved it that u guys invited Roxann again. So cool and interesting, that so many of the you guys are so into motorcycles. I feel now even more connected 🥰

Bronwen Duffield

Theory on the sideburn issues: the hair department accidentally swapped the Kim & Chakotay sideburn pieces. Also, thanks for organising the interview with Roxann.

Daniel

I remember wanting Banana Pancakes the first time watching this episode haha

Luise

"We're gonnaneed a bigger boat ... eeeh, shuttle."

Eric Leitman

Remember that voyager has limited resources due to being stuck in the delta quadrant. In any other circumstance chakotay would have seeked councilors for B’Elanna.

Barbara MacDonald

Lookin' forward to that Voyager reunion... 6 eps? I'll take it. So much the better if I can write a smidge of it. :)

ST Fan CB

I get that the writers could not have a show like this for Roxanne due to her pregnancy in the subsequent episodes after "Hunters" which is when Star Fleet sends the letters from home and Torres finds out the fate of the Maquis. However, it seems like all of this is coming out of thin air as it has been how many months / episodes since she learned this information? I think the writers missed their opportunity with this story but still hand-jammed it in and it just didn't feel right because too much time had passed. Additionally, we are supposed to believe that Torres has been engaging in this risky behavior for many months, incurring injuries that no one has noticed at all including her lover Paris? Come on. The show "E-Ring" was about the military and specifically the Pentagon duffus. It is the "E-Ring" of the Pentagon as they are named A-E starting from the most inner ring (A Ring) going out to farthest (E Ring). There is no science fiction involved. I find it highly unlikely that a space faring race with technology almost equal to that of Star Fleet would just blindly fly into a gas giant with no thought of self-preservation. That whole scenario seems ridiculous. Maybe if there was a short scene on the Malon ship bridge where the captain is warned about the danger but then says "my ship is tough and it can take it" or words that effect, then we see the ship blowing up. There was no TOS shuttle on Voyager.

Beth Anne

I always felt like Chicote had to treat Torres that roughly because he had to get through the combative Klingon part of her to get through to her. Once he got through that she could communicate where before I don’t think she could - but I always felt super uncomfortable with forming it like that too. Just catching up, thank you guys - I’m loving every minute of the podcast!
