There were 150 people or so on Voyager at the beginning of the series.

SnazzyO

First, ‘Pon Farr night?’ I can only imagine how offended the Vulcans would be. Second, I think Chakotay’s first ‘real’ kiss with Archer was spot on. Chakotay was trying to ‘sell’ his undercover story — and it would be shocking and s quick inducing because the viewer is thinking ‘ewwww 8472!’ So good entertainment value. The second kiss was just ewwww. Third, yes, plot holes were there but I like the Cuban missile crisis tension. And Janeway had an appreciation of the odds - she NEEDED peace because the real Star Fleet HQ had no clue about 8472. So I think she read the situation correctly, she needed a ‘big move’ gesture. But in reality - she had 8472 representatives on her ship - 8472 would be less inclined to shoot with their people on board; further she could rearm those warheads in the same time it took to disarm. So, big gesture but reasonable risk.

MG

I'd think if Chakotay was going undercover down there, they'd swap out his provisional rank insignia with some regular pips. Kind of stood out since everyone down there had pips. A "provisional" Lt Commander would kind of stand out.

Dee McGee

Wow, 4.5 is pretty low!

Cheerful Nihilist

Today is my 100th day of sobriety. Love the Mocktail.

Don Eitner

I gave "In The Flesh" an 8.5 out of 10. This is one of my "must re-watch" episodes. Even though a large portion involves guest the stars, it's really well executed.

James Morrow

1. The Walter snores at 9:00 are my fav part. Yes, it’s not Trek but it’s the best part of life :-). 2. Megan-thank you for your editing on this episode. You did a great job!! 3. I would love to see a 10 minute version of the out-tro because I have a feeling that once they get beyond a 5 minute impromptu look back as Tom and Harry the bit would go in some wonderfully inappropriate and hilarious places ;-).

Andrew Murray

love the call back to Boothby that both Janeway and Picard have a good friendship with., But hasn't Earth been there done that and dealt with Shape-shifter imposters?

Andrew Murray

Voyager kind of runs parallel with the DS9 time-frame but it would be fun to see Earth deal with two invasions - from the Founders and 8472.

Andrew Murray

Didn't Wil Wheaton have a scene with Boothby - or at least Captain Picard told him (Wesley) to look him up when he got to the Academy. (Don't think it was "The First Duty" episode, because at that point Wesley and Locarno are in serious trouble)

Andrew Murray

should have had cameras built into their tri-corders that could up load to "The cloud" i.e. Voyagers main computer.

Andrew Murray

point taken about neck-pinch 8472 probably wouldn't work on them, but on the other hand if "Ensign Gallagher" didn't faint, that would be more suspicious given neck pinches well and truly work on Humans, and 8472 are after all emulating humans. If they can't pass as them in all aspects, then the disguises are no good.

Andrew Murray

TV budget might explain the lackluster animation of the 8472 creature, since Voyager S1 aired in 1994, a year after the release of Jurassic Park, which had fantastic V-FX, for its time, but then one minute of that movie probably cost the equivalent of an entire Voyager season.

Andrew Murray

"...especially if he's doing anything weird...." like reading Vulcan Philosphy?

Andrew Murray

8472 would be a good character witness AGAINST humanity and prove Q's case against Picard.

Andrew Murray

Couldn't Janeway make the point that Earth has no clue about 8472 - they're not even in contact with Earth to tell them about 8472, and they're still 60,000 light years away, with no way to maintain reliable propulson to get home any quicker than they think they will (nothing short of 70 years)

Andrew Murray

funny how 8472 "don't know" Voyager is lost....because they're right there. But they're of the opinion Voyager is like a scout ship ahead of the "invasion" that's never gonna happen.

Karen Chuplis

1) the beard straightener works for you! 2) I just enjoy this episode for the fun of getting to see a bit of “earth” and at least some of our characters in an earth environment 3) to me what does pull this ep down and lower the stakes is the very fast detente at the end. It’s too easy and too fast and this may be Robbie’s biggest issue. Some how we needed some internal arguments among 8742 especially of “you know, I think we may be wrong about them” between “Archer” and “Boothby”. And then Boothby and the others pre-final conference room scene. Especially since he knows this won’t be well received by his command. There must be some original misgivings on his part as well. To me that’s what’s missing. It was too condensed into those final moments. Though I don’t think it’s a “strongest” Ep I think it’s fun one overall.

Stephanie

I agree with Robbie. This episode is just pretty boring.

Brandon Kolk

One thing that bugged me about undercover Chakotay was he was still wearing his maquis style rank insignia pin instead of Starfleet issue pips.

Kathleen Scherrman

The best parts of this episode is how wrong aliens get "Earth" ... Makes me wonder what the 'real aliens" out there are thinking about us.

Tim Neumark

Wait, no one asked the obvious question... "what does your species call itself?" I always felt this was missing from the episode.

Ericka Birkenstein

The 'go to daylight' move with an awkward close-walking crowd is the exact same setup as in The Truman Show. Both scenes involve someone trying to break out of an insular artificial environment. Both came out 1998, movie in June, episode in November.

Samantha

Good catch on the maquis bar

Samantha

And yes, it's the same people. The pleasure/story people.

Scott Lakes

Robbie rockin the long beard

Estelle Keller

March 21 is world poetry day. Great way to celebrate listening to the podcast.

Sarah Allen

1) I'm 99% sure the holo-camera prop was made from a toy car remote control unit. Looks exactly like ones my brother had in the 90s! 2) The phrase you're looking for is wastewater treatment works. :op More like a de-poop factory! :)

Adina Ringler

Tillman Water Reclamation ...LOL.... it's in Van Nuys (Woodley Park) and right next to the Archery Range that I go to. I have to say it doesn't smell so bad at least if you are practicing archery! Fun stuff!

B obrien

My son really improved his status with his kindergarten buddies the day he told them his dad worked at the poopoo plant. We laughed about that for years.

Tashicat

I never recognize this one from the title lol, i just call it "That Boothby Episode"...

Tashicat

the replimat is where people on DS9 go to eat when they dont wanna pay Quark, and yes its just a wall of replicators and some tables and chairs

Ms Nike Morgan

How many times are you going to say my name, guys? [Morgan ~ Morgen] Just kidding!

Stephanie Baker

Thank you for explaining the camera lens length. Since watching this podcast I have become much more aware of camera angles and camera types. I noticed something ‘off’ in the Delta Flyer scene and now I understand why. It will be interesting to see how they will shoot in the DF in future episodes.

Bronwen Duffield

I thought the marquis rank bars were Star Fleet field commissions (e.g. assigned in the field rather than usual systems). I may be wrong...

Jenny

The reason I never assumed that is because Tom Paris got a field commission, and has Starfleet style pips. He graduated the academy and formerly held a regular Starfleeet commission, but so did Chakotay. (He may have been on parole at the time of Caretaker, but Chakotay et al were active fugitives with arrest warrants for trial actively out in the Alpha Quadrant, though I'd guess it was more an issue of visually distinguishing the Maquis and Tom always being on the Starfleet crew side of things, confirmed in S7's Repression.) So... 🤷🏻‍♀️ On DS9's Valiant, the cadets with field commissions also wore regular style pips. Ah, ok - memory alpha calls the Maquis rank bars on Voyager *provisional* rank insignia, rather than the official field commission pips.

Eric Bennett

Yep, Garrett is wrong on this one. Those are not Marquis pips. That is a field commission/provisional insignia. Chakotay had resigned his Starfleet commission.

Eric Bennett

Robbie and Garrett were talking about the same place about the planet they wanted to visit... just didn't realize it.

Jenny

Totally with Robbie on this one - I never particularly cared for it. (Even long after J/C became dead to me; by after the full run I didn't think he deserved Janeway anyway, so I wasn't shipping them anymore or as pissed about Archer and his flakiness re women.) No B story probably played a role, since the A story with the guest stars (who did a great job, but as written) didn't do anything for me. It *really* bugged me that the 8472 stayed in character as human (particularly Boothby, a KNOWN specific human) and kept interacting with our cast that way in negotiations. It felt unrealistic, cutesy, look at how we brought Boothby who we met in TNG to the Delta Quadrant, etc to me and really took me out of the back half of that plot once the jig was up and they knew Voyager knew they were 8472, Voyager knew they knew, etc.

Eric Leitman

I believe you see 8472 again later on in an episode where the Hirogen is hunting one. “The Hunt” i beleive

Jenny

Ha, Garret, J/C shippers at the time of the original airing were PISSED at this point. Unity (especially, being season three and right after Coda, soon after The Q and the Grey, etc), Unforgettable, then this really soured us on Chakotay in terms of even wanting him to be with Janeway. (He’s single, he can do whatever, but it started to read as flakey, that his head would be easily turned even if they *were* actually together, etc, so why would we want that for her, he didn’t deserve her, etc.) At least, those of us on the AOL message boards during the real-time airing. 👵🏻 Obviously at the time, in the writing room a J/C romance was dead (at least by Unforgettable and In The Flesh) and they were trying to get us all on board with that reality.

Paul Johnston

Watching these a little behind. But def found it chilling the Doctor mentioning WW3 and the death of thousands via nuclear war. Esp in light of recent events

Rachelle H

Com badges in the future should not only have a camera but instead of talking so everyone could hear the person on the other end it should be ear pieces. Connected to you inner ear unseen.

I didn't know that RDM's iPhone could detect life signs, register various types of energy and analyze different types of matter. He must get the rich and famous type of iPhone that the rest of us don't get. 3rd time. Not fair to compare 25-30 year old technology to current. Come on man. My Ray Walston favorite memory is of him playing "Mr. Hand" on "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". That performance was awesome, truly awesome! See what I did there?
