The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Alice. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Alice:
A space shuttle with a seductive female persona becomes an obsession for Tom Paris, and it convinces him to cannibalise Voyager's parts.

I'm catching up on some I missed, so no one may never see this, but re the reaction videos/"Where's my girlfriend?" Well, Tom just verbally expressed deeper feelings for that ship ("I think I'm in love" in Garrett's reaction clips) than he ever has for his girlfriend, on screen, so that may explain that. 😂

SnazzyO

Robbie- spot on - they could have made this episode so much better with a few line adds. 1) The trader finding out about Tom’s skill and targeting him, 2) Tom indicating a neurogenic interface is the ‘holy grail’ of piloting and this motivates him, and 3) acknowledging Tom’s ‘all-in’ obsession with hobbies. Which, BTW is an ADHD trait (obsession). Would love a line about him having ADHD but allergic to the medication. (Like Kirk and eye correction medicine in Star Trek IV). THAT would have: 1) Make Tom seem less regressed to a child 2) Explain why others tolerate his obsessive behavior Finally, Alice picked a near-B’Elanna look. That’s a sign Tom has a type (or does now after dating B’Elana). Note: B’Elana is passive/aggressive low maintenance. IE She’s aggressively low maintenance (ie avoiding dependency) until Tom cracks her shell. And then she basks in attention from him.

Don Eitner

I figure B'Elanna has seen Tom dress in coveralls to go work on his muscle cars on the holodeck, so his outfit in this episode probably didn't surprise her.

sab ewell

Yes p/t fans love this one lol

Samantha

I think they should have tried to come up with Tom stories that didn't have to do with him being a pilot. There's only so much interesting material there. When they went with other interests, like the holodeck, that worked.

Michael Dismuke

This was a fun one to listen to. I actually like this episode a lot, but Abadoon stole the show.

Michael Dismuke

Where do I post questions about shows that get answered "on air"?

Stephanie

Ah the hefty bag uniform. lol If you think Robbie does angry yelling well in this one wait until you see the war PTSD episode. (I can't think of its name) Scary.

Jennifer Z

The songs on the Juke Box? It's just "Darude: Sandstorm" over and over again.

Christopher Collins

I liked seeing Harry Kim wearing a Captain Proton outfit again.

Christopher Collins

I like John Fleck’s role in this episode. I think he needed more screen time for this episode. I wish that this episode had started off with him and his version of Alice. It is unusual to see him portray a salesman good guy in Star Trek. His Romulans and Silik in Enterprise are iconic.

Estelle Keller

I really like Memorial aka the other one where Robbie gets to be loud/upset. I am not sure if it had been better if Tom wore something that matched that was tighter like what Alice had on. That said I think a lot of Tom episodes had writing that wasn’t as good as it should be due to it being episodic as very recently Torres nearly died and Evil ex-boyfriend and even the self worth piece as at times all he had was being a good pilot and not taken seriously.

Janet Potts

Robby and Garrett are wrong. There *is* dust in space. "The Universe is a very dusty place. Cosmic dust consists of tiny particles of solid material floating around in the space between the stars. It is not the same as the dust you find in your house but more like smoke with small particles varying from collections of just a few molecules to grains of 0.1 mm in size. Dust is important because we find lots of it around young stars. In fact it helps them to form, and it is also the raw material from which planets like the Earth are formed." https://herscheltelescope.org.uk/science/infrared/dust/

Stephanie Baker

i like that the guest star claire rankin played alice, the voice, and the alien 'alice'

B obrien

Jukebox needs to contain the cd Robbie did

Tashicat

the jukebox does get put in the mess hall but only like 2 eps before the series finale ("Homestead")

Tashicat

also, i may be confused but i thought in an ep of TNG feddy scientists created a particle fountain. so i guess the "danger" is relative to your technology. maybe the ships that were lost were science vessels and just not well equipped?

Andrew Murray

speaking of Threshold instead of Lizards, I think Tom and or the Captain should have evolved into something like Q (maybe not quite like that) but at least with some sort of temporary intelligence increase (although that's been done before too, with Reg Barklay.), and perhaps it allows the Warp drive to be modified enough to give them a few years off their journey, or maybe even a way to safely adapt transwarp or quantum slipstream on a more permanent basis.

Andrew Murray

You could argue Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy (at least the opening sequence of the Doctor singing) was performed in front of a live (but perhaps falling asleep....?) audience i.e. the Voyager crew.

Andrew Murray

how come the synopsis Garrett reads is not the one in the podcast (video) notes above? Because the written one is more in line with what Robbie had guessed initially.

Andrew Murray

"Synopses" is plural..."synopsis" is singular. (it's not "synopsis's's ha ha)

Andrew Murray

what about Tuvok's line about the Delta FLyer: "Mr Paris, we're not building a hot-rod".

Chris Denny

Naomi Wildman as Queen Arachnia!

RE: language lesson take what I say with grain of salt as I am only 1/4 Klingon and it’s not my native language but as far as I’ve learned in Klingon there is not such thing as an apostrophe unless you’re writing romanji, I.e., *apostrophe* is not used to connect words or letters because they don’t, as far as I know- it’s actually a different type of punctuation called a qaghwI’ and it’s used to make a hard stop or “glottal stop” instead of yajbe it’s yajbe- almost as if you’re being interrupted as you are saying it. It’s also interesting to note the word qaghwI’ itself uses a “‘“ qaghwI’.okay thank bye!

Alice is the winner since she got to go home which all she wanted.
