The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch & recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang & Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is One Small Step. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars. This week they are joined by Bryan Fuller!

One Small Step:
Voyager crosses paths with a rare spatial anomaly that swallowed an Earth ship orbiting Mars in 2032. A discovery that calls for an away mission.

I liked to think her not waiting for him to get released from sickbay to have the funeral for John Kelly was part of his punishment. (Though I agree with, if his body is going to be released in space anyway, leave him in his capsule where he's been for a few centuries rather than shooting him out aimlessly in the DQ...)

Maybe Janeway promotes Paris at the end of this Season because she looked at all the other crew misbehavior and says - he wasn’t so bad… I will compile the infractions post 30 Days and results for Scorpion Pt 1 to prove my point. For this episode, I agree, the character of Chakotay got completed screwed by the writers in this episode. I have Seven fatigue. Jeri Ryan is awesome but in Season 4 & 5 there seemed more actual plot basis for the bulk of the episodes. Now she’s omnipresent. As for the episode itself, Phil Morris is PERFECT in the roll. And it made me proud to be a part of the Space business (I am). I loved everything about it. I do hope they did some analysis of his remains and kept at least one personal artifact to provide to his descendants. Solution to the Torpedo Tube jettison - send it into a star. I would want my remains hanging out in space forever.

It was the futuristic artificial womb maturation chamber that the Borg One grew in that accelerated the subject's growth 25x. Regular Borg maturation chambers don't do that. Seven was in one for 5 years and she came out in her early teens and became a functioning drone.

Sherry

Kings reference. Ds9 which had wrapped by this eps filming, wasn’t his beloved athlete buck bukai, a kings baseball player?

Dee McGee

I just caught Rebecca's rewatch comment "We don't need anymore ship-love storylines", referring to the previous episode "Alice"!

Hello everyone, we know there are issues in playback of videos on Patreon right now. You can view the post we made about it here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/video-viewing-73105091 It's a mystery to us, and we've reached out to Patreon. Hopefully we'll hear from them soon. In the meantime, all we can suggest it refreshing, using a different device, or different browser, or switching to the Patreon app. We've been able to get the videos to play by trying different things. But there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to what ends up working....

One Small Step: because no 90's era TV show could escape, in some form, a baseball episode.

Kevin Selman

Limerick excellent as usual!

Andrew Murray

Off topic...but what do you guys think of S3 Picard upcoming (judging by the released trailer)? (YT channel TrekCulture I think is quite impressed)).

Andrew Murray

again Paramount+ has better synopsis: "A subspace anomaly leads to the discovery of a 21st century space shuttle lost on a mission to Mars."

Andrew Murray

It's true about their 'burials' in space. Unless you have some sort of ...Genesis planet to aim it towards, it's forever wandering through space. They could just beam it into space, but then Bones McCoy's worst nightmare would come true - spreading one's molecules across the universe - but with deliberate act, not accident.

Dean Costakis

God, I love Bryan Fuller! This is gonna be a good one.

Brandon Kolk

Regarding the Kings playing in the world series, it's referring to the London Kings that were mentioned in DS9.

1. I bought Chakotay obsession. It may be true another scene would have shored that up and maybe it just wasn’t explored enough all along but he has a bit of obsessive personality. He threw himself into Starfleet defying his father like a dog with a bone and got there. Then when the Cardassians annexed his peoples’ chosen new homeworld he threw in with the Maquis obsessively to the point of a dangerous mission and then he really threw into the protection of Ocampa to the point of ramming his ship into the Kazon. He comes off as mild or at least steady but there are plenty of crumbs planted that when he throws in, he throws all in. 2. In regards to “Ballerina”, Chakotay points out he had an aspiration at 5 yo. (Generally little kids do kind of) and Seven’s “ballerina” was so disgusted I laugh. It also echos “the girls favorite color was red.” In Early days to Janeway. She did have humanity for 6 years 3. Seven’s glancing back at Kelly’s body is the first time she is getting a glimmer of history and how history is about real people and she is with the guy who is so alive in the video. It’s not just a body. And she’s a little uncomfortable with that realization. 4. No matter how many times I see this I get VERY emotional when Seven gives the World Series score quietly at the coffin. I mean it really affects me. I agree John Kelly is the winner but it’s because his dedication to collecting that data is finally justified and will be used as he had hoped and lived that last little bit so furiously for. Ugh. It just gets to me. I love this ep. To me, it’s actually a pretty perfect episode.

Torry Haag

Yes, I believe they put the fictional player Buck Bokai on that team. DS9 has several baseball references

Debra Crockett

The robot on Buck Rogers was Tweeki, not Twiggy. Twiggy was a British model.

Amy Tudor

So wonderful to hear from Bryan and have him join you for an episode! Great insight and loved hearing his thoughts :)

Stefanie Coxe

Bryan Fuller is a delight to have on the show. More of him, please!

Carole Patterson

Wonderful to listen to Bryan Fuller and you guys this week. Great episode ❤️

Tashicat

The ending of this ep annoys the hell outta me, like they took dudes body from where he died living the dream n then set it to wander endlessly. it just seems like they shouldve left dude in the module cause it was an approproate resting place. now hes just a navigational hazard to the Delta Quad smdh

Brandon Kolk

One thing I noticed in rewatching this episode was that during the comm system malfunction one of the thing you can hear is someone asking the computer to, "Locate Naomi Wildman." Soon after we learn that it's currently 2 am, which makes me wonder, just who and why is someone needing to locate Naomi at 2 am?

Sarah Zeisler

You need to include other intros for yourself Garrett. Instead of just always forever ensign.

Tara

What a fun listen! Bryan is hysterical -- and I noticed Janeway's concerned look too -- it was more than her usual "my crew is in trouble" look, definitely. But Chakotay completely defying her orders, almost killing himself, Seven and Tom? Not credible. And worse, there is no scene after where Janeway dresses him down (however lovingly) for being so irresponsible. If he was alone in a shuttle, I could see taking the risk, but being responsible for 2 other lives as well? Conduct unbecoming!

Dawn Smith

I totally agree…I was hoping it would come up in the discussion. It seemed kinda disrespectful….or maybe store him and take him back to earth…

Amber

Bryan I love when you’re on! Thank you!!

ST Fan CB

It was spelled Twiki. Although everyone on the show pronounced it Twiggy.

Phillip Morris was in the original episode "Miri" and favorite Jackie Childs on Seinfeld. It does not make any sense for Chakotay to be the one so interested when it should have been Paris. In the episode "11:59" it was established that Paris knew all about the early Mars expeditions and knew by heart all the people involved in it. So why was he not the character with this story? As mentioned by others on here, the London Kings baseball team was already established in Star Trek Cannon by several DS9 episodes. Where does this information about Borg maturation chambers accelerating growth by x25 come from? I don't believe that is cannon as it was never mentioned on screen. I could be wrong but probably not. Maybe this was from a novel. WTF is "human privilege"? Come on man. Brian looked riveted while listening to Garrett tell his story about the play he was in. I would have loved to hear Brian's reaction to that story.
