I live in Japan and translate Japanese for a living. Shogun is brilliant and the scenes in Japanese are authentic. It also has a great cast of some of the best actors in the country. By the way, Curb your Enthusiasm has been translated into Japanese but with the off-putting title "Larry David's Midlife Crisis". That seems to be the only way they could contextualize it. I've occasionally turned the Japanese subtitles on while watching, and it's a weird experience with all the improvised dialog. If you knew nothing about American culture and watched, you probably would just be confused. (Like my wife was when I tried to get her to watch the Big Lebowski).

I've worked/Lived in 2 national parks & am actually gonna work in Glacier this summer were he supposedly shot himself. Legally your not supposed to have any guns in a National Park, but the Rangers kind of understand that a lot of people have them with them for different reasons. So Rangers generally will be lenient and give you a warning if your not an asshole to them since they mostly don't care long as you don't seem like your about to shoot someone. My two sense is that he genuinely did get shot somewhere before Glacier, but he probably is just a compulsive liar and dug himself into a hole. Guns nowadays go through safety training and are supposed to be able to take a fall without discharging.

Chris, you need to watch the original 1980 Shōgun miniseries, starring Sir Richard Chamberlain as pilot major John Blackthorne and Toshiro Mifune as Lord Toronaga. Apart from the fact that Chamberlsin is a far better Blackthorne, this,series is significant for having no subtitles for the Japanese actors, instead relying on Orson Welles (yes, that Orson Welles) to narrate the gist of their dialogue.

I haven't watched the Outrage movies, but that sounds about right. I think I still prefer the "Honor and HUmanity" series, though, which suggests that the 'code' is and was always bullshit. Best scene is when a guy tries to cut his pinky off but none of them actually know how to do it right and they end up dropping it on the floor.

DC had a great local music scene in the 1980s. In addition to DC hardcore-punk, there was also DC Go-Go (e.g. "Da Butt" by EU, "Drop the Bomb" by Trouble Funk, "Bustin' Loose" by Chuck Brown, "Let Me Clear My Throat" by DJ Kool). There have been a bunch of interesting musical oddities too like rockabilly guitar god Danny Gatton and blues musician Bobby Parker. In the 1970s there were bands like Pentagram and guitarist John Fahey. Official Washington is its own universe. However, there is/was a distinct local culture in and around the DC metro area. e.g. a one-time southern city with international influences that are distinct from other southern cities.
