Will and Hesse are joined by Josh Lewis and Jamie Miller of the Sleazoids podcast to investigate the “blood, whiskey & shit” world of director Walter Hill. Tough guy action, guns, squibs, and lean & mean style abound in both Southern Comfort (1981), a Vietnam allegory transposed to the Louisiana bayou, and Extreme Prejudice (1987) a narco-border transposition of The Wild Bunch.

Here, Try This

Idk why you’re talking shit about Crossroads, better movie than this half assed Vietnam in Louisiana Peckinpah knockoff bullshit

demonsweat

Going to the lobby to get myself a treat

SLEAZOIDS

Thanks for letting us geek out about Walter Hill! 🫡

HuffingGasInTheShed

Finally a movie I’ve seen. Southern Comfort used to be on Bravo when bravo showed interesting movies

HuffingGasInTheShed

Crossroads wasn’t bad, Ralph machio has a guitar duel against devil Steve via

etienne

almost totally outta context but did you know that Steve Vai also did the shred guitar divebombs on the Halo 2 opening theme

Charles Calvert

Easily my two favorite Walter Hill joints, Peckinpah Reborn!

Joey Fazzoli

Holy shit. This guy’s movie autism made the ep 100x better

DoleWand

Crossroads is an awesome movie, Steve Vai and Ralph Macchio have a guitar battle to be the best blues man, 10/10 movie

Blank

“That hill is named Walter” lol’d

NYCM&AHole

Hells yes. Jack butler cuttin’ heads

Ben Walsh

Supernova with Mr Coppola...

CT

I will always remember Southern Comfort as one of two movies I was basically held hostage and made to watch in the back of a tour bus with the now deceased former singer of Gwar, Dave Brockie. He had seen it so many times that he essentially replaced the entirety of the dialogue by voicing it all himself.

David Hughes

Good job, team! Teed the rewatch up so nicely, plus I’m gonna watch The Lost Patrol for good measure

Javier Bremond

Whoa Southern Comfort might be one of the best films I’ve ever seen. Thank you for putting me on, when my wife wakes up I’m going to annoy her by explaining the plot in way too much detail. I’m on the west coast she gets up early don’t be judgy

Javier Bremond

Serious about that too love the show

Karl

Stucky dies by getting stuckied in quicksand

MCL

Crossroads is sick too

plainwrap

Man I'd fucking pay to have that memory, Total Recall style.

demonsweat

I'd gladly free up some of my brainspace devoted to the Plan 9 dialogue for Southern Comfort

Chris

Josh name drops Stone Cold so I wanted to mention that the Stone Cold episode of We Hate Movies (which Josh guests on) is a fucking blast

CT

The guy was something else for sure. Absolutely obsessed with War history, battle of Stalingrad being foremost amongst them. He went as far as to travel there for some sort national of day of remembrance at one point even. His brain was simultaneously unhinged and unparalleled in intelligence in ways I’ve rarely encountered.

Anomalie

All I could think while watching Extreme Prejudice was domestic gladio

Tea for the Tillerman

Ry Cooder one of the GOAT film score composers, The Long Riders score especially. Cajun name and vibe but he’s from Santa Monica

Chris

Will's "scary guy with panty-hose over head" ranking is Tom Noonan in Manhunter erasure

RG13

I’ve been listening to Sleazoids since Will was a little girl in pigtails.

RG13

I probably owe them about $600 at this point.

Drew

It's good we have Hesse cuz no one else would speak truth to hotness about Powers Boothe looking hot as hell in this

OtherRussert

Crossroads cutting floor scene is the best!

Patrick Taffe

Amped to watch Southern Comfort; sounds like the quality of war horror Garland's Civil War could only dream of

Zack Burke

Ry Cooder is super cool, and an LA guy.

Kev Harper

Crossroads is an American classic

Kev Harper

However.. Extreme Prejudice is Hill's masterpiece.

Tim O'

Southern Comfort is easily accessible on YouTube 🫡

Christopher Small

The Assignment? More like the REassignment! Amirite

Fingerless

within the deeply honor bound culture of the Cajun people, it is considered disrespectful to shoot at someone

Louis

what ww2 movie do they reference at the very end?

JD

Rip Torn's performance as a crazy country singer in 'Payday' is breathtaking, don't miss it he destroys in every scene.

Jed Levin

Great episode! Does the MM ep count as one of the two Chapo podcasts for the week? I was never sure of that, not that I’d complain if it does.

Grant Klevgaard

The crossover episode dreams are made of! I hoot and holler every time Will does the “jackrabbit slap-a da bear” Wilford Brimley impression from Hard Target!

etienne

it's pure extra

Blair Rancich

I feel like I watch alot of movies, then Will gets going listing them and I wonder if I've ever *actually* seen any

Everett

The one armed trapper feels like a reference to the Jerry Reed song Amos Moses about a guy that can trap an alligator with one hand because his other one was bit off.

RG13

Why buy when you can rent? Now I don’t have to sit through Wild at Heart.

RG13

Jerry Reed just took credit. Amos had to get his arm gobbled off by a swamp critter in order to go down in blues history.

RG13

RG13

And Will, as well.

RG13

Hesse needs to do a Bonus episode on Polanski’s The Tenant.

Ernest Ambrus

Just watched Southern Comfort. Holy shit this is anxiety inducing. What a movie. Newfound suspicion of anything Cajun. Brion James is terrifying.

Dustin Nelson

Never heard of Southern Comfort (1981) before, checking it out now! I'd seen Extreme Prejudice (1987) since it's in the Vestron Video bluray line

David den Daas

The no-scope shot on the canoe is sick. There is at least 7" of rise on that musket ball and probably 19" of drop from the apex of the shot. To hit a moving target with those parameters is ridiculous. That's not accounting for wind or tidal movement even! Those guys never had a chance........🚬

David den Daas

The regulations on hair length and facial hair were preeeeeeety lax in the US Army back in the 80's and that is why China is winning today... 🚬

David den Daas

For a movie made in the early 80's there is a lack of ciggies... 🚬

David den Daas

I thought the bayou was hot? Why are these guys wearing huge coats? Why is no one is sweating?!!!!!

Dustin Nelson

I had to lookup the Southern Comfort ending to be sure what happened and apparently the version released in Iran added gunshots and stuff to suggest that the Cajuns had been contracted to kill those guys by the army itself as some kind of combat experiment 😳

Samuel McGuire

Wait. Has Jacques seen “Southern Comfort”??

Lazarus Roth

Just read they filmed this on the Louisiana side of Caddo Lake. My girlfriend and I are watching the first fifteen minutes and realized it’s the same area we go every New Year.

Lazarus Roth

Dude, that area is cold in winter. I was a little too inebriated this past January and we set off kayaking. Rolled into the water about ten minutes from the cabin. Water hit like a sledgehammer took me a good while to focus and swim back to shore. Northern Louisiana is chilly.

Boaz Corey

You need to at least look up the scene in Crossroads where Ralph Macchio (it's actually Ry Cooder's hands) has a guitar battle with satanic Steve Vai.

J.P. McD.

Hell of a good call

J.P. McD.

I get sad about the Total Recall escalator guy too sometimes, but then remember that he’s not real

J.P. McD.

Future episode pre-comment: the Patlabor Blu-rays look incredible

Will Newberry

My favorite extreme prejudice trivia is Ironside saying in an interview there was something like 45 minutes of the movie with Andrew Robinson as his CIA cohort that all got cut out

Patrick Taffe

Will imitating being eaten by attack dogs surprisingly funny bit; love this man

Lizard

Found a copy of Extreme Prejudice and The Long Riders on VHS for a dollar today and plan on forcing my boyfriend to watch them with me very excited

Ksizzle

Clancy browns character in extreme prejudice taking a moral grandstand when ordered to kill the sheriff makes even less sense cause earlier in the movie he says he hates cops. He literally says he likes fords cause he saw one run a cop over 😂 and its not like he undergoes an arc in this movie that changes his mind or anything

Dark Alliance

That's what the John Milius' original script hints at supposedly.
