Then, some disastrous new polls for the Biden campaign, Trump searches for a VP and praises Hannibal Lecter, and Bret Stephens & Gail Collins search for the true value of a commencement speech and decide it’s about telling kids to get off their damn phones.

I have a suggestion for how to fix your so-called democracy with one new rule: if the participation in any given election falls below a certain threshold, it needs to be repeated twice. If the turn out hasn't improved by then, all established parties are dissolved and new ones need to be formed.

I’m on board with the whole not voting for Biden thing, but does it not still make sense to vote for other more left-leaning senators, house of reps, and other local offices? I know the Dems suck but the inflation reduction act was passed with exclusively their votes and no gop votes. The bill has a ton of flaws but it does boost funding for lots of decent projects as well. Same with whatever bill included the one year of the child payments - one year was better than none, right? I know I’m sounding like a milquetoast lib but I do believe that it’s okay to not vote for Biden but still vote for say Bernie if you live in Vermont or some other union-friendly, pro-green energy dem that might be on your ballot.

Something I think a lot about re: “Trump will be worse for the Palestinians”—will there even be a Gaza left by the time he even gets back into office? Considering the death tolls, the annihilation of any remaining “safe havens,” the forced evacuations, the internment camps—come December, will there be any free contingent of Palestinians left in Palestine? At that point, how could Trump make it any worse? It’s why I think it’s insane to fret about a hypothetical future for the Palestinians with DT when the worst is happening to them RIGHT NOW. I don’t want to be a doomer and assume the worst case scenario is inevitable, but short of meaningful international intervention from somebody who isn’t us, I don’t see how the horror will abate.

Biden's weapons restrictions, reminded me of an inverted version of Kamala Harris's $20,000 student debt relief for Pell Grant recipients, who start a business in a disadvantaged community, and manage to keep it afloat for 3 years. Biden's plan is no 1,000 or 2,000 bombs in civilian areas as part of "full scale" invasion of Rafah without a contingency plan for civilians. e.g. essentially no restrictions.

Things are terrible and they're going to get worse either way, so we're talking about matters of degree - and it's what we like about people like ourselves: we want the best outcomes for the greatest number of folks, we want to minimize harm - and that's a good thing. I will be voting straight-party Democratic down the ticket and writing in some third-party candidate for president. I live in a red district in Indiana, so it won’t make much of a difference, but the Dem senatorial candidate (Valerie McCray) at least gave a good statement on Palestine and seems to be a decent candidate overall. I’ll be happy voting for her, and my congressional Dem candidate is fine. I think most of us who are refusing to vote for Biden understand that Republicans are worse than Democrats, and any of us who live in red states know how awful GOP governors and legislatures are. It is totally normal to have firm red lines on some issues and still believe in strategic voting in other situations.
