The original bastards of law Tim (@GarlicCorgi) and Andy (@wyatt_privilege) of the ALAB Series podcast stop by to chat law and courts today and WHAT TIMING because the Donald Trump guilty verdict dropped about 10 minutes into recording this ep. So we discuss that case, the verdict and the potential legal ramifications for Trump and the election in general. Then, we look at what’s going on with these Supreme Court Justices’ batty wives, the corruption of the court itself, and the docket of cases set to come before it this summer. Finally, we look at the ICC/ICJ and discuss shifting attitudes towards Israel in international law.

having quit twitter and the lack of eps, I had assumed all of ALAB was dead. Really glad that's not the case and happy to hear the fellas again.

Yo this is how I find out ALAB is back? I’m starting law school this fall. After a fucking shite year THIS IS A SIGN

Last Years Man

The komodo dragon reference led me to seeing videos of komodo dragons eating their prey alive and I will never be the same.

Last Years Man

I still think the law of stupid outcomes predicts that Trump will lose the election but then his verdict will be overturned on appeal and everything will return to what it was before the case was brought to court.

Jake V

THANKS it was driving me crazy

plainwrap

Common theme shared between Trump, SCOTUS and Israel: offenders being given every opportunity to avoid accountability so long as they settle down and abide by social norms only for them to throw a tantrum and demand society apologize to them. Banner year for shitheads.

Sheila Mydick

Whenever an announcement comes out of the Chapo Department of Corrections I imagine Will behind bars in an orange jumpsuit

THEKILLERWHALE

Honest question. What is the actual crime that Trump committed? To me, using campaign funds for personal use is a crime but apparently he was not charged with that.

Last Years Man

I predict he'll win too, but I feel like the law of stupid outcomes is pretty powerful. You never know.

Last Years Man

My understanding: Rather than pay Stormy himself, he wrote Cohen a check and passed it off as a legal fee. Cohen then passed the money to Stormy. So the idea is that for tax purposes, that was a taxable transaction. and they lied in their filings to keep it off the books. There's a separate allegation that the payoff was designed to have political benefit, in which case, it would technically have to be paid by the campaign. Doing so, however, would again require a record. So in both senses, the scheme represents false reporting designed to prevent the Stormy story from getting out. Don't you feel dumber having read that? I do.

Zen Ben

The value-add for me was the textured reality check by actual lawyers on how much to expect out of the verdict. Plus, one of them is funny.

Last Years Man

I dunno, I think a complicated record that ultimately results in no consequences and gives both sides cause to continue saying they're right without it actually meaning anything or having any meaningful impact would be... pretty damn stupid.

Tom

Chris Wade coming through with that King Crimson needle-drop

THEKILLERWHALE

Still a bit unclear to me. He does not seem to be charged by the IRS. So it was fraud, but against whom? His wife? And why does everyone keep talking about there needing to be some second crime? Thanks though. You are right, I do feel dumber. Maybe we should just stop thinking about this.

True Horror Productions

Oh yes the lawyers have returned, charles did our goofy twitter space a while ago and I think it's safe to say ALAB is bursting with stored podcasting juices

Jaime Christley

Trump's lawyers are getting paid in woims.

Last Years Man

I believe the specific charge is fraud against the state of New York for falsifying his paperwork. So it's the state suing him. The second crime thing is that if they can prove that this was purely a politically motivated act, you could extrapolate that his campaign "benefitted" from the scheme and any campaign "benefits" fall under campaign finance law. And from what the ALAB boys were saying, campaign finance law violations carry greater penalties. In all serious, though, I'm a freelancer who does his own taxes, so I don't mean to downplay the seriousness of the criminal aspect of it. There's a reason it's against the law. It's just that when I start weighing the potential stakes of this case with the actual circumstances, my soul wants to flee my body and drive off a cliff.

So if trump is sora, Rudy is obviously Donald. But who is goofy? Michael Flynn?

Karl Childers

i thought ALAB meant Assigned Lawyer At Birth too much internet for me

David

It’s a state court verdict. Not federal. You don’t usually get these things wrong

Matelda

If the SC strikes any right to post-release gun restrictions for people with violent convictions, it will be a pretence to increase minimum sentences, impose maximum sentences, and deny parole. I bet Securus and GTL are lobbying & submitting amicus briefs in favor of 2A on that one.

Justin

It's so funny, because it's obvious that basically every other writer on Seinfeld had contempt for the man. I'm sure Jerry thought Bania was a parody of a bad version of himself, when it was really just LD and the good writers mocking his pathetic excuse for comedy.

bearoftr

Uhhh at least punk has culture ethics and a generally left leaning(if not overtly anarchist) scene.. unlike prog that's filled with reactionary nerds.

Wonder how the court will frame it so that felons can be president or buy guns but only if they’re white

This rules! ALAB got me back into listening to podcasts, so it is with love that I say: It really speaks to Chris’ skill as a producer that he was able to get Andy’s mic to not sound like utter trash! Thanks for the slop lads!

Matthew

*Jerry hanging around with his mouth open, waiting to deliver his lines while everyone around him actually acts*

Blue Myself

It’s really funny watching conservatives become prison abolitionists but just for one guy. Trump’s like their McDouble Leonard Peltier. If he get’s house arrest I can’t wait for the MAGA version of the American Indian Movement Song, wailed by distressed meemaws and pep-peps at the gates of Mar-a-Lago; the Beautiful Boater Ghost Dance.

Toby

The president should execute every member of the Supreme Court as part of the swearing-in ceremony.

Trout Mask Original

Chris my dude, that In the Court of the Crimson King drop was delicious and unexpected!

ChapoFan inParis

SCOTUS will rule on Trump exactly as they did in Bush v Gore. They gave themselves the power to decide the outcome while stating that their intervention will not serve as precedent.

If a hung jury is such a concern why don’t they just select female jurors?

The appeal to heaven flag is Christian supremacist flag. People who fly it typically believe in something called the 7 mountains mandate where Christians must take control of every aspect of society before Jesus comes back. They are loyal to Donald trump but it's more radical Christian than it is q-anon

Farto

omg alab and chapo i'm gonna cum

Michael

I remember the first time I ever heard about Crystal Clanton was when Chapo did a show in Ohio with Bryan Quimby and when Will talked about Clanton racist text messages Amber’s response was I’m sure Clanton was just her nickname.

Bobi Jon-son Kenobi

If Trump is Sora, then Biden’s gotta be Xehanort, right? And Xigbar/Luxu is Hunter, obviously. Beau Biden is clearly the Master of Masters, long gone but soon to return

Dean Rao

The Supreme Court "Justices" are kind of like major league sports players (but less creditable), in that their biggest concern maintaining loyalty to, and collegiality within, the league that supports their privileged status.

Chief Redsauce

The ALAB guys are great. Was super happy and surprised to see a new ep out of nowhere the other day.

Demented Avenger

Punk fans are mostly shitlibs cosplaying as anarchists who engage in outright musical fascism. Prog fans are mostly aging hippies, also generally shitlibs.

Reading this I was struck by a vision; Trump jailed, wins re-election, expands court to 13, appoints the 4 vacancies. 😮‍💨

The kingdom hearts analogy murdered me. I had to stop packing for my camping trip to wheeze for a minute. That is exactly the level of insanity these people live their day to day lives steeped in.

It would be funny if there was something equivalent to a Grumbles motion for a gag order where Trump's lawyers could argue that nothing would stop Trump from talking shit.

The Trump thing was presaged by Arrested Development. Gob= Don Jr Lindsay = Ivanka Eric= Buster Barron= Michael An Yang = Tiffany

THe "reverse blind side" line got me.

Has Will ever made it through a story about any woman over the age of 65 without calling her a daffy bat/broad, frumpy, a hag etc

Matelda

I think Trump will win and Biden will say it was stolen and run again in 2028. In 2032 they will nominate Hillary Clinton again and she will lose to a 30yo idf veteran who was acquitted on a technicality at the Hague.

Manny Tenorio

Gotta have Bryan on again to confirm if the flag is a swinger thing or not

George Lochinski

I just now realized who Andy was on Twitter; these guys rule
