BLOWBACK’s Brendan & Noah return to the show. We start off today’s show discussing Israel’s massive escalation into Lebanon, and Brendan & Noah point out the many parallels between America’s current position and the various atrocities and mis-adventures they’ve chronicled on Blowback over the seasons. Plus much more on Blowback’s current season focused on Cambodia, and the many crimes, colorful characters, and surprising sources of magnanimity they’ve uncovered through their show.

Is this where chapo and friends finally do the most exhaustive history and dissection of the DK's song as a definitive footnote to the main story?

THEKILLERWHALE

To Brendan's point about the "tail wagging the dog" being a more generalized phenomenon than simply Israel, this is common enough to essentially be a rule at this point. A classic example is France in 1958 where a bunch of colonial psychos essentially orchestrated de Gaulle's return to power in the putsch d'Alger. Peripheral, colonial projects, when given enough autonomy and strength, will bend the politics of the host state to fit their agenda, not the other way around.

Sometimes I’m left longing for slop. Sometimes there’s three slops in three days. All I know is this field is beautiful, the farmer is my friend who brings food, and the other cows and I will surely live here in peace, forever.

"If we don't back [Israel], they'll just go to Russia!" There's another reason that this is utterly unworkable (besides the obvious, the fact that the Russian Fed. has no defensive compact with a dozen other regional and international military powers and can't actually accomplish its own strategic goals right across the border, much less on the other side of the Earth), one that I sort of suspect a lot on the Left and even many liberals don't like to acknowledge: a little known country called 'the Islamic Republic of Iran' that some of them might have heard of. Seriously, Russia and Iran have been fighting together in Syria for more than a decade by now. The entirety of Iran's military forces and capability, that isn't sixty-plus-year-old Yankee surplus junk*, is supplied either by Russia, or in the event that Russia is put-off by sanctions (like with the S-300 years ago), manufactured domestically using Russian information sharing and industrial expertise. In what world Russia willingly give up its alliance with Iran (and for that matter, Syria, with its only Mediterranean naval base and an Arab ally literally older than Russian independence from the USSR) for a gigantic liability like being Israel's America? We're overestimating the fact that so many Israelis have Russophone surnames and happen to be the descendants of Soviet Jews (who hardly had the fondest memories of the USSR considering they emigrated in the first place). Particularly among the pro-negotiation liberal commentariat (whom I sympathize with, insomuch as I want an Iran deal), there's this "worst nightmare" imagination that somehow the periodic disagreements between Russia and Iran over what postwar Syria will look like or how much of Artsakh Azerbaijan gets to carve out before they call NATO, will turn into Russia giving up a twenty-year strategic partner in favor of...the ultra-aggressive NATO partner who's been blowing up Syrians since around the Korean War. *Or a gift from the Gipper.

That would suggest anyone in congress would object to this on moral grounds and not be concerned about losing their next election to an AIPAC funded candidate

Geronimo

Great comment. I think it definitely would have been more workable 15+ years ago, back when capitalist Russia had zero qualms cutting their Jewish population loose to go be settlers in Israel after the USSR fell, and back when “Putin’s” russia was a big American ally during the beginning of the war on terror under bush. Russia used to get along very well with Israel. People forget how badly Russia in the 90s and early 2000s tried to buddy up with US and Europe, how supportive and down for that Clinton and Bush were for Russian “authoritarianism.” To this day all Russia yearns to be is a B team imperialist power on friendly semi equal footing with USA, UK, and EU Europe, but the big boys won’t let Russia in the club! To be fair why would Russia be let in, there’s only so many seats at the table, why squeeze the old Cold War enemies in when they so clearly lost the war…no incentive

Wu Ming

Chris - please fix the noise gate or whatever is going on with Will’s mic. The beginning and end of everything he says is muted and sounds terrible.

Two personal big things about Blowback: 1. The MGS themed hoodie from last season is my favorite goddamn thing to wear 2. A specific song from Brendan’s musical alias, The Great Vorelli, has been in my ON REPEAT folder for several years… BURY THE BODY AND TELL NO ONE 🔥

Israel isn’t a member of five eyes. The countries are U.S., U.K., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

C. Ries

Before WW2 there were tons of ethnic minorities in various central and Eastern European states. After WW2 they were almost all virtually homogenous. Hitler failed in creating an Aryan empire but his logic of an ethnostate was followed by the post war order in Europe

C. Ries

Literally the entire region plus some European capitals too, it’s an open secret

"The last time Israel invaded Lebanon they stayed for 20+ years..." Well, the was the SECOND last time, the last time they didn't stay that long.

Ok but I just thougt it's probably bad to nuke your neighbour, not just morally and vibes wise speaking, but nuclear fallout or whatever. Oh man, by god let Vladimir just drop that Tsarbomba on my wig and let it all be over.

I’m so sick of invoking the term empire. No it’s not liberal, but it’s not imperial either. It’s just fucking stupid. Felix is right to criticize them for this. This is Israel making the US their client state, its ideological failure of so called “liberals” to live up their own ideals. It’s the abandonment of liberalism, not the expression of empire or liberalism or military industrial whatever dead end theory helps people sleep at night.

Geronimo

Liberalism = capitalist imperialism, colonialism, empire. Always has. That’s why it’s stupid to act like liberalism and it’s dumb fuck incoherent ideals can somehow “be lived up to.” This is 100% what living up to liberalism looks like folks! Liberalism, not once abandoned! Liberalism *cannot be* be considered “abandoned” because there’s no golden age where liberalism was pretty looking, existed without this. Sick of people pretending they can have their rich as hell liberal “democracy” without genocidal mass destruction - sorry, that’s not how this has ever worked, not for a single second!

Dan

Ohhh so it’s that simple: liberalism = fully automated luxury atrocity generator. No moral or intellectual content whatsoever. Thanks, super helpful.

Geronimo

There’s a reason the mass culture in america can metabolism the latest genocide without a hitch. The school protests are a small blip, nothing compared to Iraq war protests. Seriously, most people do not care about Palestine, can’t be bothered, basically all the self described liberals. Even of those Americans and American liberals who do “care,” some large chunk of them, maybe the majority, are going to vote for this year’s batch of genocidal liberal politicians. Then they’ll cry and say “these politicians are abandoning liberalism.” What?!? This is what you guys voted for!

Alec

Speak about this lunchtime

Dan

That’s right. Never before has anyone faked some moral orientation in order to obtain and then abuse power. 100% liberalism’s fault.

gustavvasa

You'd think if you are focusing an episode or entire season of your show on a country/people you would learn how to pronounce it. It's spelled Khmer but the pronunciation is Kh-Mai instead of Kh-Maer

Axel H.

It’s commonly pronounced with the r in English.

Jonathan Boud

Will Matt's book have an international release? UK specifically.

Geronimo

Well wtf does that say about your dumb fuck liberal country and worldview if since 1776, without missing a single beat, every single American liberal politician under the sun has advanced genocide, terrorism, essentially every imaginable crime to fit their time and place? And that there has been no liberal “arc of justice” to make it kosher because despite literally everything, this country is still as we speak genociding Palestinians, potentially expanding it Lebanon again. But no! Liberalism’s nonstop enslavement and exploitation of the world’s majority is because of “trickery” (ha) and…please don’t say “money in politics”…

Rxk Lenderman

American empire and American liberalism are coterminous; they exist to prop each other up and you wouldn’t have one without the other. The Biden presidency and the semi-likely ascendant Kamala presidency, and their response to Israel and Palestine is notthe result of abandonment of liberalism- it is liberalism at its apex, it’s zenith, it’s endgame.

LPO Crane Jefferson

Mark Ames trying to interview Sy Hersh was a trip, we shall see how you fare Brendan and Noah 🧐

Michael

I don’t think a harsh program of austerity would lead to a civil war in Israel. What I think would be more likely is the state becoming more authoritarian and theocratic given the dominant politics of the country.

Michael

Saudi Arabia is another good example of an American ‘client’ state which has bitten the hand that feeds it. The W Bush administration actually classified parts of the 9/11 Commission Report to protect them.

Robert

Will’s chuckle at Felix mentioning the F35 program after bringing up fighter jets 2 prior times in the episode.

Dan

Both dems and republicans want you to just whole sale associate dems with liberalism. Republicans because they genuinely hate freedom and want to see dems fail and dems so they can do what they want power, and know no one wants republicans to rule. I’m simply saying that it’s stupid to go along with it. You have to be critical about what is good and bad about liberalism in order to actually win people over. When they continue to enable this genocide and then you bash liberalism and endless genocide of American empire, guess what? you get nothing.

Zachary Sloan

Regarding the "why are so many Palestinians still alive" question, the answer is pretty simple - Israel literally can't kill them faster than they already are. Unlike with, say, the Holocaust, the IDF can't just go door to door in Gaza and capture/kill everyone (because they don't actually have ground-level military control and will face resistance, vs the Holocaust where their targets were minorities where they lived). So all Israel can do is just keep dropping bombs and cutting off aid. They're already doing everything they can to wipe out Gazans, short of dropping a nuke. Basically peoples' brains have been warped by the Holocaust being the go-to example of genocide. So they think "well you can always just ship everyone to concentration camps," when you actually can't do that in many situations (like Gaza).

Michael

Thank you Hillary Clinton for busting out the classic “Outside Agitators” trope.

Nick Moralejo

Another great episode. Love the back blowers 👍

TNG reference made me feel like I’m exactly where I’m meant to be listening to this.

THEKILLERWHALE

BTW, 0% chance that Wesley hit that.

Geronimo

Democrats genuinely hate freedom too. Who do you think you are fooling? Do you know what democrats actually do in office? Winning amorphously defined “people” over isn’t done by talking out both ends of your mouth, or by insisting we live in a fantasy land where liberalism *is not* the thing that actually exists in reality. You win people over by calling a spade a spade, not being obviously delusional. Liberalism = endless genocide, you cannot bring yourself to articulate a time where this wasn’t true, and the fact you can listen and have these podcast people talk into your ears about what’s happening in Palestine, what happened in Cambodia, yet you STILL deny this objective fact of liberalism is offensive, nasty Dan. You should know better, even if the “people” you want to “bring over” don’t

Respectfully, where is the Halloween movie mindset announcement

grymm

Regarding the surprise at the lack of bloodthirsty rage by the previous victims of U.S. and western ghoulery speaks to what a freakish minority we really are. The culture over here has trained us to think everyone will need or want murderous revenge because we would. The West is the aberration.

Does anyone else feel like they are being wildly optimistic by saying that Israel is in an increasingly untenable position? It's obviously true that a larger number of folks than ever before are critical of it, but none of them have any power, and eventually this war will end, and Israel will be in a better position than ever to keep swallowing up land.

Justin

I think, in fact, they both CAN and ARE killing Palestinians at a far higher rate than any of the numbers quoted over the past few months.

Sam Schick

Brendan has a great bit of analysis at 18:00

wolfgang

“There must be some unstated reason…” Lockheed Martin, RTX, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, and General Dynamics. Will can’t sftu about the Biden admin but doesn’t realize selling weapons to allies is one of the most important industries in the US? He’s smarter than that. The argument is so surface level and is getting so incredibly boring and repetitive. Biden, who gives a fuck? What is he going to do, an executive order that will stand for 15min? The shit is borderline performative at this point.

Zachary Sloan

Oh, absolutely. The numbers have likely been drastically understated ever since the ability to even reliably track casualties was destroyed (via destroying the hospitals).

glaourgbn

seems fine, at the start at least

Brendan is the only guest who’s ever been willing to just say “Felix, buddy, I don’t know what that reference is, please explain it”

Agent Grange

Felix is right. Yes Israel is a client state but so many US institutions are fully captured by Israeli intelligence and interests pushing us into this suicide pact with an ethno-state. It's so destructive to our own global standing that it can't fully be explained away as "normal" American geopolitics or the economics of empire. It's not like the Khmer Rouge had an intricate political lobby deciding who wins our elections, or an intelligence unit operating in our urban police stations and major corporations. It really feels like these aren't just normal vassal state things, but a genuine case of the tail wagging the dog.

ploob

I mean a threat against Russia would be the whole ball of wax I believe.

Chris

Extra funny because Only Sunny is maybe the most normal reference Felix has ever made

Jack Hand

He’s literally moving his head away from the mic. You must be new.

jkjkjkj

Worth noting that during the Lon Nol era famines were a huge problem in Cambodia that were only mimimized by the US sending food aid, and today the US still claims that Cambodia owes it money for that aid (something in hundreds of millions of dollars)

Siddhartha

Felix and Noah’s dead silence during that godlike TNG riff hurt my soul.

Zora McBride

haha My GF and I are going through TNG and TOS, so we'll get there eventually.

Thanks for an amazing episode! I had to subscribe after hearing this one on the main feed. :) The escalating to de-escalate justification is Strangelove incarnate.
