Greeting boys and ghouls, summer is gone, and spooky season officially commences with the return of Ghoulvie Screamset Horror Movie Mindset!

On this episode Will Massacre and Hexxa Deni kick things off with two movies about the spookiest animal of them all: Cats.

First up in the The Black Cat (Ulmer, 1934) horror movie gods Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff menace a wholesome American couple with their evil European sex perversion in an Art Deco fortress.

Then in Cat People (Tourneur, 1942) an ancient curse turns a nice Serbian woman’s repressed sexuality into a leopard… or does it?

In both these films ignorant Americans fall prey to the deep, occult evils of Europe and a past they think they’re free of. Also there are cats.

Ready to enter the Screamset again

Brent

Whew! For a second I thought this was on the 2019 movie… although

Nolan

Movie mindset sir!!

John

God dammit that what I expected and wanted when I saw this ep

Mr Tu Damn Quoque

Thank you, Mr Menaker, sir. We are grateful for these delicious content morsels. We appreciate you and all the work you do.

Matt James Rich

Being up bright and early is a part of the true movie mindset

Shiv

Shiv

or late as hell :)

Hardcore Virgin

Don’t listen to any of that noise. Be right here. Join us.

Natalie

yayyyyyy cats

Bo Galindo

I wish summer was gone. But it's over 100 in the east bay area still....

Blank

I was having a rough week and feeling pretty down…nothing to perk me up like Will and Hesse guffawing over bela Lugosi 💗💗

John Frasca

What a fine morning it is

Roy McGovernor

WTF I thought y’all were doing Cats: The Movie ft Taylor Swift and other People

Roy McGovernor

betrayed by the podcast elite who wish to hide the truth of Cats

Doug Cartel

Gee whillikers! That's a lot of people for one grave!

Blank

Speaking of sanity points can we pleeeeease get more DnD eps? 🙏🙏🙏 We need dr quackenbush to return

Wes

A movie about Americans’ ignorance of European history and a podcast about two Americans who can’t be bothered to figure out how Tourneur is pronounced

Doug Cartel

It's funny because I've never seen these but listening you can easily remember a show that spoofed on any one of these tropes

Erik Amundsen

Seeing this drop just as I arrived at work has changed the trajectory of my whole damn day!

Cullen S

WE BACK!! My second daughter was born around the same time as Matt/Amber’s. The other day my wife said, ‘it seems like just yesterday we were in the hospital watching Halloween 3: season of the witch’

Drew

LETS GO

Drew

Random q. This was one of the few I didn't watch along with last year, and I want to catch up now. Do you think I need to watch Halloween 2 first? (Obviously I've seen this original)

Yairo Martis

Will Massacre is a great hardcore band name.

Yairo Martis

Halloween 3 is basically totally unconnected to the Michael Meyers movies.

danny

i live for movie mindset

Brant

Another great horror featuring a cat, the Mexican classic: "Más Negro que la Noche"

Tim O'

We can all agree that movies are best enjoyed in either the morning, afternoon, evening, or night.

lake

Calling it anything but ghoulvie screamset is sacrilege

Dustin Nelson

Thought we meant the Fulci/Argento Black Cat and was a bit confused at first lol

ploob

Hello, period.

Drew

Ty

lake

Both such great movies. Love that they’re doing older films. I hope next year they do island of lost souls or Karloffs The Body Snatcher

MATT TRIANO

Could have actually watched CATS

Leland Alvarado

I noticed that the original pairing was with Curse of the Cat People. I watched it yesterday. Not as good as Cat People but an interesting missing link become traditional horror and Night of the Hunter.

Akira Honda

Two of my absolute favorites!!

MCL

Is that the OCP logo? Y’all should get to redevelop Detroit

Jaime Christley

Give it up for Robert Siodmak, he had the pronunciation of his last name on the back of his director’s chair

MEAT CLOWN

That guy who always used to complain about Will's voice fading in and out has cursed me, I can't un-notice it now and I'm going insane

Bo

i was so excited for 10 seconds thinking you were gonna talk abt cats (2019) but this is great too

Movie Donkey

Whoever borrowed these two non-streaming movies from my local ibrary; let’s hang irl, I need more friends

Athyrium

Gay. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

ploob

Yoo, Ima Jedi-Mind-Turn-Yer-Brain-Off RN!

T

Bulgakovs cat Behemoth is my all time favorite fictional cat: “I challenge you to a duel!” screamed the cat, sailing over their heads on the swinging chandelier.”

Toshio42

When I 1st watched this and saw Irena get so upset and scared by the beautiful cat lady saying "moja sestra?" I just thought "this is awesomely gay."

Johnny

Is there a schedule for spooky season? I can't seem to find what's coming up next

Matthew

Lobbying for recognition of OG Pet Sematery as technically a cat movie 🐈‍⬛

Thomas

bottom of the "BUY MATT'S BOOK + OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS" post

Alexander Fuchs

ulmers set design for fritz land and fw murnau going unmentioned is a crime against movie mindset tbh but happy about the pics for this ep 👍

Cullen S

Yario nailed it. The less you know about it, the better too Drew. Let the sexual prowess of Tom Atkins wash about over you

MCL

You said it’s gonna get real gross this year so I hope we all get the deep dive into Society (1989) that we deserve

J.P. McD.

Hate to mess up your social plans but they’re both available for digital rental on various platforms

Dark Belden

Has anyone else seen the Scorsese documentary where he talks about Cat People? I don’t remember the name of it but it’s all about Marty comparing directors of the time to smugglers.

G

Ghoul V. Screamset

Peen Israel

Movie Mindset is sick, love this

Josh Link

Two of my all time favorites from this period. Watched The Black Cat last year with a group Of people who had never seen it before and assumed it would just be silly. Really enjoyed their total silence during the climax.

Jesse Spacco

Both of these movies I see pop on streaming sites and I've always skipped them. Cant wait to watch them now.

Dustin Nelson

It's so lit, vibrating with excitement at that lineup

Jaime Christley

The actress who plays the lady at the restaurant who greets Irena was dubbed by Simone Simon. Tom Conway (Dr. Judd) was born Tom Sanders, and his brother was George Sanders (ALL ABOUT EVE). He plays a character named Dr. Louis Judd in Lewton's amazing THE SEVENTH VICTIM, although there's no real reason to believe they're the same person. He's also one of the leads in I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, maybe the best thing Lewton - and Tourneur - ever made. Not-very-prolific but underrated writer-director Albert Lewin (THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY, PANDORA AND THE FLYING DUTCHMAN) made only one movie in CinemaScope, THE LIVING IDOL (1957), and it was his last. It's not some kind of lost masterpiece but it's kind of a stealth remake of CAT PEOPLE, with a haunted idol standing in for a panther at the Central Park Zoo.

Jaime Christley

WHAT DID HE KNOW AND WHEN DID HE KNOW IT

Emily Robbins

ok i get why you didn’t but i was expecting this to be about the movie-musical CATS (2019) and was mildly disappointed 💀

Michael Polacheck

A sci fi film by Ulmer is "The Man from Planet X". The alien to me looks very much like Gabor Mate'.

Greasy_Jones

I spent the whole ep saying "When are they going to get to the Bowie song???"

Tim O'

It's so good to hear this theme music again 😎🎃

Doom Hermit

Anyone see the 1982 remake of Cat People? It’s got John Larroquette, Ed Begley Jr, Malcolm McDowell and others in it lol. I found a free stream of it and will post my thoughts about it under this comment in case anyone is interested in more cat film binging.

Whucko Jaang

I wonder if Will Massacre is related to Hugh Massacre

demonsweat

Another thread connecting the two films: Art Deco was heavily influenced by Egyptian Revival following the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb in the early '20s. Also great to see a return of the sword-cane, weapon of choice for Dr. Pennyfarthing/Quackenbush.

Savannakhet

Will has definitely mentioned this film before in an episode of Chapo: I think he described it as the most 'cocaine - recently divorced guy' film ever.

Fernslinger

Cats aren’t scary! Who are these guys trying to kid! Ghost, goblins and things that go bump in the night! Now that is some scary stuff!

Michelle

Not nearly enough mentions of Karloff’s hair. That alone would be a huge red flag for me.

Louie Luke

Man I feel so dumb, I saw this and thought it was over the movie Cats and had no interest. I didn’t realize it was the start of MM horror fest.

Doom Hermit

I will have to find the episode. That description definitely fits 😂

Corey Richter

Dude. Will: you gots to STFU sometimes. The Hesse cutting-off and talking-over is out of control now, especially in the Cat People section. It is literally maddening.

Alex

Loved to get a bit of Bauhaus

Tony Millionaire

Haven’t listened to the whole thing yet, but have you noticed that The Cat People is the set-up for Rocky Horror Picture Show?

thunderbolt 1000t

Thank you for introducing me to this movie, loved it.

JASON

Cat People 1982 way better. Nastassja Kinski’s bush is legendary.

Dakotah

You mentioned Schrader's remake of Cat People, and it got me craving a MM Schrader episode. Would love to hear you two talk about Light Sleeper or American Gigolo.

zach

just splurged and bought the "cat people" criterion blu-ray... gonna check movie madness here in portland to see if they carry "the black cat"

Fresh Dill

For Dr. Judd fans, he’s a reoccurring character in Val Lewton movies and shows up in the 7th victim

etienne

EERRRR ACKTHUALLY the town of Niagara Falls would have looked much better in the pre-war era before the majority of the historical downtown was demolished for highways and surface parking lots. I would have expected a journeyman numtot like Will to be well aware of this

Vincent VanRiesen

"...you don't see a book on his sword" wrecked me

J.P. McD.

I’m sure all the people who vacationed in gorgeous upstate NY mid-century were just dumb morons who didn’t know the pleasures, like Will does, of visiting somewhere with plenty of microbreweries where you can order charcuterie.

J.P. McD.

There’s one on the Criterion Blu-ray of Cat People, Val Lewton: Man in the Shadows. Scorsese narrates but didn’t direct.

bruce

We live in one, after all

M Varnzo

“Get that cat out of here!” -Dr. Huffouuurrr

Max Fennig

They’re writing the movies! They’re casting the cats!
