On this week’s episode the massacre continues as Will and Hesse  get slimed up and examine two horror films by Brian Yuzna that play more like grotesque sex comedies.

In From Beyond (Stuart Gordon, produced by Yuzna, 1986), horror icons Jeffrey Combs, Ken Foree and Barbara Crampton team up to give a kinky body horror spin on HP Lovecraft, which features deranged and horny scientists who invent a trans-dimensional “resonator” that opens a gateway to “the beyond” but also makes you nut in your pants. Pineal glands throb and perverse flesh abominations abound!

Then in Society (Brian Yuzna, 1989) we get one of the most unforgettable sequences in film history in a movie that plays like a “very special” episode of Saved by the Bell about incest, until you learn what “The Shunting” is.

Society waits for you, the person listening to this episode!

I first watched Society on acid and it was the most revelatory film watching experience of my life

Kyle

From beyond was so fucking weird hahaha

THEKILLERWHALE

Has Rich Evans responded to your repeated requests to guest on MM? Please keep trying gang. He gets a lot of fan mail and I am sure he will respond eventually.

Karl

I'm so excited to hear them talk Society.

Ctrane

Zero need for comparison whatsoever

Connor Gouge

Damn if Jay bauman wasn't on this episode hes never gonna be a chapo guest lol

Zach H.

Society is if Lovecraft wrote a VERY special 90210 Halloween episode

Chapo Bath House

I have ruined more than one relationship by shoehorning Society into conversation

MCL

Yuzna and Gordon wrote Honey I Shrunk the Kids and after that success Yuzna was like “I gotta make this movie where this teenager pees in coffee”

triplehashbrown

Society is the most frightening movie I’ve ever seen. It’s like they made a movie with the sole express purpose of triggering paranoid schizophrenia lol

Conner

You forgot to mention Lovecraft’s fear of black people lmao

MCL

HPL was afraid of everything, all non white people, women and the ocean. If i could go back in time i would give him an atomic wegie

Hardcore Virgin

Not related. But the statue in the sisters bathroom in society. Really looks like a person self sucking. Cruelty squad.

Mark

I’m old enough to have seen From Beyond in the theater, and I will *never* forget getting up as the credits rolled, and there was a guy in one of the back rows just sitting there holding his head. Could it have been intoxication? Sure, but I like to think the movie broke him and he needed a moment.

Natasha Dexter

Ugh I'm so sick of movie madness, particularly when such movies are hard to trace down without paying

snudge crunkies

They're really not that hard to track down

MKatieUltra

My gay friend told me that about the fisting tattoos! Pretty sure I’ve seen ppl who have them and don’t know that.

Frances Mary

Since he's come up a couple times this halloween season, I cannot say enough lovely things about Ken Foree's delightful and sweet instagram account. @kenforee8 He just goes to cons and has a nice time and talks about movies he enjoyed being in. A+++ wholesome entertainment.

Erin Kristina

Listening to Excorcist 3 episode- I saw it in the theatre when it came out, haven't heard anyone reference it in decades. Was happy to hear that the scene that stayed in my mind all those years is appreciated by others as as scary to them as it was to me! One of those scenes that enters your mind when you're in alone in a dark house and feeling that irrational fear that hits you.

Declan Kennedy

just learned that Billy Warlock is the son of the great Dick Warlock, AKA Stunt Double Snake Pliskin

Zach G

God I love Jeffrey Combs. Truly one of the all-time masters of freak out acting

Shadow Cabal

Dahmer’s favorite movie 🧠 🍴

Michael S. Judge

The last time I went to a psychiatrist, as opposed to a psychiatric nurse practitioner, her verdict on me was also "WE HAVE TO START ELECTROCUTING THIS BITCH"

Tim O'

If you watch Society with the subtitles on, you'll see "[SQUELCHING]" on the bottom of the screen for about half of the climactic scene.

Eric Kerner

You're missing a huge easter egg by not googling what the society opening song is from

Bodie Tack

Eels and jellyfish are the sexiest sea creatures 🤤

Doug Cartel

YouTube Prank: Pranking our son: he thinks we're going to fuck him!

Christopher Small

I like how The Society ends with a the Democrat solution to oligarchy. "Well, we can't do anything about the flesh orgy monsters who run our society, but if we make them more diverse, that'll kinda help..."

Savannakhet

Benny Urquidez also appears in Grosse Point Blank I think.

David Schuller

Best comment I’ve seen about SOCIETY: “Billy’s entire character arc is that he gets progressively more Italian.”

EaZy E

Omg. That dragons forever guy comparison is really close. Lol

John Harwood

Top MM episode to date, five full bags of popcorn, dripping with glistening butter

Brandon

Two of my favs

TubiRocks

I got to see Jeffrey Combs as Edgar Allen Poe in a one-man show at Fantasia while I was volunteering. Later, a friend interviewed him and when he mentioned he liked Star Trek, Combs launched into character voices unprompted.

D Z

a while back, i saw Society in a theater where probably 2/3 of audience (including my partner) hadn’t seen it. Yuzna was sitting a couple rows ahead of us. roars of laughter, and then what i can only describe as audible disgust. gotta be gratifying for the guy after this one slipped through the cracks 30+ years ago. long live everyone involved with this movie.

Dante

I remember a review where I first learn about society and how the adopting low borns and absorb them is base on how dog breeders would introduce a mut to the breeding group to help deal with the inbreeding defects Not sure if that's true or not ofc

Dustin Nelson

"Humans are such easy prey" 🔥🔥🔥

The slow torture sacrifice at the end of Dagon (2001) turns me off way too much

danny

from beyond made me nauseous

etienne

this says a lot about Society

Matthew Born

Holy Shit - Hesse’s Trump impression is awesome. Had me dying, killed it.

Hardcore Virgin

Also. Society perfectly captures the experience of a painful like liver hurting trip on mushrooms while having sex. All that wet unsettling twisting around.

Taylor Leibel

I recently met Mr. Combs and he was an extremely warm and charming man. He told a great story about traumatizing a bunch of children working on a kids show on the same studio lot in Italy as from beyond because he would walk around in the full Crawford transformed makeup.

Mark Ambrose

Original screenplay title? "Teeny Weenies". Gordon was supposed to direct but the stress of taking on a Disney project allegedly led to his first heart attack!

Mark Ambrose

My favorite tidbit is that Dr. Bloch is played by Gordon's wife, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon, and they both seemed to delight in having her portray horrible harridans and were bummed out that her full eyeball sucking was removed to avoid an X rating. Thank god for uncensored directors cuts, it's intact if you watch it now.

James Browning

I love to hear the appreciation for Jeffrey Combs. His multiple DS9 characters and movie roles are always a treat to watch. The Herbert West archetype that recurs in his roles is always welcome. Also excellent that he works with Barbara Crampton in these films. Spot on on the Debra Harry Videodrome comparison. Exactly what I noticed as well. Excellent season! Dog will hunt! Just watched Castle Freak. Another great Combs and Crampton film.

Josh Link

Attended a Q&A with Yuzna last year. I asked why the movie Dagon is called Dagon and not Shadow Over Innsmouth since that’s the Lovecraft story being adapted. His answer: because Dagon sounds cooler. Love that man.

Mark Schneider

Thanks for turning me onto this film. A demented friend of mine showed me Re-Animator in the early 90s, which was good. But nowhere near the demented sex-fest that this one was!

KES7774

Freudian slip of Jane Air. Hesse knows her Russian nu metal XD

Big Cheesin'

Hesse, Benny Urquidez doesn't have alopecia, but he did requestthat make up in Dragons Forever in order to make himself look scary.

glaourgbn

I have no idea what "shunting" is.

sailor corellia

Does anyone have a link to Matt's Letterboxd account? I cannot find it, alas.

Nimbly Bimbly As FUCK

We're gonna need a movie ep about this movie coming out called The Carpenter. It's about Jesus training his carpenter apprentice to be an mma fighter in Jerusalem

Let's Get Medieval

Next week, "Petie Wheatstraw: The Devil's Son-In-Law"

Dustin Nelson

Still hate the ending of Dagon (2001) despite locing the rest

Casey Smith

Thanks so much for this 🥹

M Varnzo

Great stuff again. Listening in 2025 as ICE really takes the gloves off and hearing Will mention Trump 1 out of the White House and back at Mar A Lago made my heart sink.

Mage

Truly a tough listen lmao

podcast enjoyer

Pretty sure will was thinking of the Alice in wonderland level music in Kingdom hearts 1 instead of the 2001 space oddity music when the spaceships are docking but I could be wrong
