Surely there’s no way a country in the rightward turning west could elect a woman…leftist…member of an incumbent party…in 2024? We turn our eyes to our neighbors to the south to look at Claudia Sheinbaum’s recent election as president of Mexico, and the phenomenal success of her party there. Professor Alex Aviña joins us to discuss Mexico’s recent political history, the victories and shortcomings of Sheinbaum & AMLO’s Morena party, US/Mexico relations, and varying perspectives on the “crisis” at our border.

The average Latin American country spends a shocking amount of its budget on magical realism. Venezuela alone has been crippled by the expense of grandmothers who can either turn into cats or dream the future

This is such a good interview. I'm texting my friend who works at the White House specifically in Mexico relations who was lukewarm on AMLO but tinis this election was stunningly positive

Thank you very much for having Mr. Aviña on, Mr. Chapo. I’ve been trying to figure out where the fuck to start when it comes to learning about AMLO, Morena, and especially Mrs. Sheinbaum, and Mr. Aviña provided. One can tell he’s an educator, but he’s a rare bird that doesn’t sound like an academic. That’s intended as praise. Mr. Menaker conducts some of the best interviews. Thanks for allowing Mr. Aviña a long lead. /EndGlaze

Anyone interested in vile USA shit and the drug war should look into the story of (and recent news about) Genaro Garcia Luna. I promise, you'll never guess the end

ThatFlyingScotsman

Felix has said the same bit about the Dems moving right making it look like they were caught doing all the shit the Repubs claiming they did for the past 3 pods. I wish I could be as proud about anything as he seems to be about this bit.

On the one hand I enjoy the joke at the expense of this question. It does also highlight that no one has any sincere belief in a book to start with hence no recommendation. However guest dropped name of a book. Maybe start there. And see what’s in the works cited. And you’re well on your way to becoming a scholar !

There are so many easy fucking things that can be done to “manage” the economy better and Amlo is an example of how much better things can be when you do them

William

The “anti-inflation” goods prices reminds me of the Bolivian state having its own grocery stores (essentially), buying the surplus meat, freezing it, and then undercutting the people who raise prices when there’s a shortage. So many easy fucking ways to make the economy work better

Love the attention for Mexico. Super important and incredibly interesting country. And it's virtually never covered in a serious and intelligent way (in the US anyway). People should travel to Mexico before they even think about a tour in Europe. Amazing country and history.

Sheila Mydick

Wtf is discursively? Is discursive the new rhetorically? Is this grad student speak?

James Wallace

Yeah but that doesn't make rich people more money in the short term

Great episode, great guest! I have watched a few of Sheinbaum's press conferences (they stream on X, the everything site, home of free speach). 🇲🇽 !

Pancy Nelosi

Does anyone know the song at 30:40?

Doug Cartel

To look at it from a historical perspective, the last 150 years of obsession with the US mexico border is a brief hiccup in the history of that region as a transportation route For thousands of years borders didnt matter, now, suddenly, they do

Doug Cartel

You can find public figures from 1924 shrieking about migrants coming over the Mexican border to replace the white race, back at the height of Eugenics. If they couldnt build the wall, what hope does trump have after already failing last time?

Travis

i have failed 😞

This episode was good shit! Great guest and an interesting topic. Bravo Mr Chapo!

Mr Worldwide

This is one of, if not the best episode you guys have done this year. Awesome interview.

Ian H

Probably a mistake to be earnest in the comments but; I did two long youth volunteer stints in Mexico, first in rural Jalisco (Ocotlán) and then Guanajuato (the city) and just as a general rule Mexicans are the warmest, funniest, most welcoming people you'll ever meet.

Uso Dayo

Amlo sounds like the main character in Gandam

Ian H

I was passing through Mexico City in '06, right after the first presidential election AMLO won, and the zócalo had like a million people in it, chanting, singing, and holding those "Por el bien de todos, primero los pobres" banners. All I could think about were the dogshit domestic politics of the Bush years back home and how badly I wished we had something like that.

Ian H

Man you hate to hand it to Porfirio Díaz, but he was cooking with "tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de Estados Unidos"

CS

Do you know what discourse is?

Frijolero

Finally a Mexico episode. Thank you guys! Good stuff but there were a lot of missing talking points: -AMLO shutdown the Mexican CIA -AMLO shutdown the blatantly corrupt Federal police, replacing them with the National Guard -AMLO provided hundreds of millions of dollars to Central America for jobs programs to curb forced migration -If the National Guard doesn’t process refugees, they will quickly be recruited, killed, or trafficked by the cartels -Just like Mexico can’t control US drug consumption, they also can’t control forced migration I too am a son of Mexican migrants and I can’t stomach this wishy washy view of genuinely good governance in Mexico

America is just shoving meth, coke and fentanyl in its mouth because its cracker population craves death. Mexico should legalize drugs and tax them and become the richest nation on earth

This episode was straight flamin hot fuego.

Aviña was the coolest professor i’ve ever had

CS

Best episode in a hot sec. Refreshing to hear someone talk about Mexico who actually knows their stuff, which is a rarity in US media.

protob1

Hahaha, easy on the keyboard, young man.

Jaime Christley

US Special Forces taking on the Mexican cartels would be like if I personally tried to take on the Harlem Globetrotters. I don’t think America is prepared to lose 100% of their troops.

Fernslinger

Chin up Travis! This other guy is a bozo and you’re the real deal. No self respecting Chapo fan would look anywhere but under your name to find out when Felix starts talking.

El Elias

There were 34 candidates killed during the election cycle, most of them running for local office. While this is certainly tragic, I've seen a lot of gringos talking as if they were all running for the presidency. Not a single presidential candidate was killed.

ploob

What a based Day After Tomorrow reference and anecdote!

Claire Simon

Sheila Mydick

I guess I’m asking bc I’ve only heard it employed by people in academia - in the same category as bodies/spaces/inscribed/horizon in my mind. Like, I was not sure if it had a more specific meaning in those circles, one which I could not place.

Dillon

In what sense is it a failed state?

Well aged meme

there are few things funnier than US special forces losers getting owned, but please please let's not invade...

El Elias

One criticism of AMLO is that the rich did get richer during his mandate

Well aged meme

Their ear is way more on US shit. I enjoyed the EP but I know to take basically anythign said here with a lotta salt.

Well aged meme

That said I appreciate this EP for mentioning that book which I immediately purchased. Look forward to reading this weekend

If the Cartels got washed by the Mexican Army, it's a fairly safe bet US Special Forces would do the same.

Michael

Another plus of the drug cartels in Latin America is that the American security state has well financed and heavily armed forces that can be used to suppress “hostile” political movements that threaten American interests in the region.

Tyler Mastalerz

Would love a similar episode on Petro and Colombia. Having spent time there for work, they have such an insane (US backed) right-wing.

Sam Zeng

They would just work with the cartels

Tyler Mastalerz

wouldn't this just be JSOC operatives vs CIA assets?

samurai guy

I miss Matt. He would be such a good Mexican

drizzly_november

He's a pretty frequent guest on American Prestige on both Mexican history deep dives and current affairs, they recently had him on to break down the election narratives about Latino voters.

samurai guy

Yah I think this is much more realistic. I think cartels would fair better then most terrorist groups US forces have had conflict with since Iraq. But some SEAL would be trying to get rich off a cartel

Wisselbanken

I need to lock into more American Prestige

Ian H

KIA would be small, DNB (overdose) would be huge

Jaime Christley

I'm just thinking of who we invade vs who a lot of know-nothing lifers in State Dept and whatnot fantasize about invading. You've got people thinking invading Iran - or Mexico - would just be like Kuwait in 1991 and it would look a lot more like a massively scaled up Bay of Pigs, even with air support added. Even setting aside spook/JSOC fuckery, going into completely unfamiliar territory - without a coalition (maybe Bermuda can send some of their Uber drivers) - is a nightmare scenario. If the Mexican Army is indeed making headway against the narcos, well, they're also home field players. We'd just be going in there like real-life TROPIC THUNDER characters.

nati

We need international collaboration with Morena and other progressive and leftist parties. I cannot be the first person to come up with this idea

Ian H

I think one thing they don't quite get to here is that no one, Dems or Republicans, is actually trying to *stop* migration from LatAm. There are too many key industries that rely on undocumented labor and having a desperate, immiserated, "illegal" segment of labor benefits all employers by lowering the floor of wages/conditions and acting as a threat to the rest of the workforce. The game for the right is to arbitrarily make make people's lives more hellish and miserable, mowing the lawn so to speak, to please their voter base and keep migrant labor maximally exploitable.

El Elias

They are insane, probably some of the most deranged right wingers in the region

Jaime Christley

I think it was Michael S. Judge who explained - and this is my paraphrasing from memory - that borders, hard borders especially, are designed to serve the illicit trafficking markets, whether you're talking humans (lots of things happen in detention centers, whether it's in El Paso or Palestine), narcotics, or weapons. I think about that a lot.

Savannakhet

I really need to re-listen to Mike Duncan's Series on the the Mexican revolution and civil war... I remember the word 'Porfiriato' being said a lot, which I think is some sort of popular dessert treat.

George P

You should, Bessner has been spitting fire recently

The big undiscussed issue with immigration under Biden has been the goddamn guest worker visas. He's expanded them massively and openly collaborated with businesses to screw labor (including unionized workers) through it and then turned around and blamed undocumented people, refugees, and green card holders. Dems will tout the CHIPS Act and call Biden pro-union while ignoring how he helped TSMC to bring in thousands of guest workers from Taiwan to replace US construction workers, plumbers, and unionized electricians in Arizona (even after the Electrician's Union begged him not to and explained they had plenty of members ready and willing to do the work but TSMC wouldn't pay them commensurate wages). Then they wonder why they lose in Arizona and Nevada (where the hospitality industry is doing much the same). I don't think Taiwanese electricians are going to starve to death from being denied guest worker visas. Per capita GDP there is over $70,000 a year adjusted for PPP, they have single payer healthcare, and their poverty rate is lower. Meanwhile, "death by tooth infection" is still an issue in the US. Everyone wants to focus on undocumented immigrants while ignoring that much of our "legal immigration system" is really just a system of corporatized indentured servitude.

Ardy Rezv

The libs are worthless. Just like maga. Let them go

——

“Don’t cum.. don’t cum” -mamala

Ardy Rezv

The left needs to have a better answer for this than if you don’t like unlimited immigratnts driving down wages you’re a bigot 😂

Jimmy McMillan

I think you're largely correct but I don't think the US is as geniusly calculating and capitalistic as you think. Our leaders will burn money for crueltys sake and they'll shoot themselves in the foot economically by closing the boarder and deporting migrants. They're not just capitalists. They're dumbass bigots too

Ranni

Great guest!

Michael Barbarich

Ah yes. The way to build class consciousness within the proletariat is to further gatekeep and isolate ourselves. Screw converting them. This is a cool kids only club

justdave

Hi I'm Dave👆, and I'm here for you brother.

Alex

Pat

who gives a shit?

Ian H

I agree there are dumb chud true believers at all levels, but I think guys like Tom Homan and Stephen Miller know the score, and if they forget the commanding heights of corporate and security state power will happily remind them. None of this is to say there won't be a horrific campaign of persecution and violence, of which mass deportation will be a feature. Just that it almost certainly won't, and isn't ultimately intended to, result in a significant net reduction in migrant workers overall. I think something comparable is going on with abortion, where Dobbs and the wave of antiabortion legislation provably didn't reduce the yearly number of abortions, because that's ultimately not the true goal of the "pro-life" movement (punishing/disempowering women is).

etienne

were you one of those oddball russian chauvinist putin fans too? what are you doing my guy

Chris Jones

Really awesome guest. I could have listened to him talk about Mexico and the U.S. for another hour or two easy. Hope he returns

christoph.s

A great episode and a great guest!

Whistle Dog

Huge problem in Canada too - not just for Cdn workers but for the guest workers themselves (immigration status tied to often-abusive employers, poverty wages with no guarantee of permanent residency, etc). TFW program ballooned after COVID and now the gov is trying to scale it back but business owners are making a stink, saying “Canadians don’t want to flip burgers at 2am for minimum wage”. Like, if your economy can’t produce 2am burgers without resorting to slavery, maybe it’s time for 2am burgers to go the way of the 🦕…

Juan Gonzalez

Felix, Russia has produced like 20 something Су57 since the war in rUkraine started. Its finally ramping up to full scale production

Ana

The abuses of guest workers in the US have also been horrific. Even putting aside the effects on the domestic labor market, you'd think more of the American left would be concerned about the exploitation and abuse these visa holders suffer. Many are essentially trafficked in and forced to "pay off debts" to their employers (indentured servitude in the most literal sense). Sex abuse is rampant. Some programs - like the L1 visa - don't even require employers to pay guest workers minimum wage. Several years ago a government contractor was caught employing IT workers for less than a dollar a day in one state. They were "punished" by being forced to pay them federal minimum wage (which is a total joke amount in the US). These were skilled IT workers with expensive certifications who'd replaced US workers that could've easily demanded six figures a year for their work. I'm very much of the view that we should defend undocumented people, asylum seekers, and green card holders, but also demand the abolition of guest worker programs. They only exist to exploit workers and hurt labor. And there's such a tiny, insignificant social safety net in the US (which Biden slashed even smaller) that at this point it just feels like they're committing eugenics against the working class. So many people becoming homeless lately.

Antipaganda

Ah, she totally did it for me with this one. RIP weird death aunt.

Andrew Cross

hey! if this is anybody but Travis, youre stealing my bit!

Jon Lyons

why is Felix still silent on whether the JAS 39 Gripen or the JF-17 Thunder is cuter

Gubriel

I listened to AMLO's Conferencias Matutinas a lot on my commute to improve my Spanish (as Felix says, he speaks very slowly like a sleepytime bear) and I was really struck by how different it was from our style of politics. There's even a segment where they just go over average gas price all over the country for like 5 minutes and remind listeners what AMLO and Morena have done to keep them down. Despite how aligned the Dems are with media, It's so weird that they couldn't figure out communication with the country like this.
