Boo!👻

Not only is that the classic thing a ghost says, it’s also what you’re all probably saying because Movie Mindset’s second Spooky Season is officially over! Apologies for this one being late, but we go out with a scary good episode, bringing back Certified Vincent Price Expert Thedeath Damnel to review the third and fourth Price movies she’s ever seen: The House on Haunted Hill (Castle, 1959) and House of Wax (De Toth, 1953)!

We talk about how each movie artifice to enhance realism, the scariness of spooky skeletons, and, of course, the Grandaddy MC of the Haunted House himself, Vinny P! Hide under the covers, turn out the lights, and keep your gun coffin by your side because this one is a screaming good time! Mwahahahaha!

Yes... Ha ha ha... YES!

THEKILLERWHALE

Greeeeetttttttttttinnnnnnggggsssssssssssss...

Matty yglesias

why did movies become the thing all nerds with no hobbies glommed onto

Tim O'

Because it's a great art form and it was a great way to pass the time during Covid lockdowns? Liking movies is a thing shared by many different kinds of Americans because it brings joy. This is like asking why nerds like ice cream and sunshine.

Matty yglesias

clearly you nerds don’t like sunshine

Savannakhet

Because most people now just watch Prestige TV on Netflix and Movies have sorta gone from being the most mainstream art form to essentially a subculture.

Dan Howard

I also hate that other people like things. I am very cool.

Lydia Maria Child

Ok so I'm not crazy....I knew there was one of these missing before Halloween. Glad to have it for the Spooky Thanksgiving season, nonetheless. What's the connection or influence between Red Letter Media and Chapo? I don't think they've ever been mentioned, on either side, but seem to share some basic ideas and tastes. RLM an early influence on the Chapos? Any opinions to be found here?

THEKILLERWHALE

I think that Matt said that Rich Evans should be on the Wisconsin state flag or something once.

Blank

Three queens talking Vincent price 💗 love it

VaultBoy1974

Hooray!!! I’ve been waiting for y’all to get to Haunted Hill. He is so great in that movie. Did you know that he was in the stage production of Gaslight on Broadway? God if only there was footage of it.

nahobeeho

It's reminding me of Dan Harmon's impressions of a rap interlude performed by Vincent Price. Also the soliloquy to himself after the acid bath dunk makes him sound like an anime villain. Props to our hosts for sticking to the spooky season theme even after the awful election news.

Lydia Maria Child

Thanks. My dumb ass probably heard that and thought he was talking about the historian of the 3rd Reich or something.

Frances Mary

I will never tire of the Vincent Price episodes 😍 I hope Witchfinder General is included next year.

Will Winkle

People in the 50s were afraid of skeletons, but cool with clowns.

stop watcherman

I have so much fun when they’re silly about the movies 😊

Richard Cochnar

Did you all know that Vincent Price never came out? According to all sources, he’s a straight man. If that’s true, huge dub for straight white men.

Richard Cochnar

Hideo Kojima is video gaming William Castle.

buttface

It's a super low effort podcast format and endless supply of content without having to create anything new

buttface

Chapo has been on a downhill run ever since around the time movie madness started. Please do something new. This shit is really boring.

Chris

Don't listen to this guy, I like Movie Mindset so it cancels him out

Falls

buttface is truly a buttface. movie mindset and especially ghoulvie screamset is amazing

syd

I thought he was eventually open about being bisexual, IIRC there was a cute quote from his wife about them both "swearing off of boys" when they got married or something. Or I fully made that up lol

Richard Cochnar

I’d love to see it! We don’t deserve him, but he’s ours unless proven otherwise!

fredbaroque

"There's a movie called 'The Smeller'!?" 👈 quote of the week.

Savannakhet

One of the RLM regular guest guys had a 'Bernie Would Have Won' Tee on during an episode of Best of the Worst once.

Tim O'

Having a great time imagining that this is John Carpenter himself and he's a Chapo head

Jaime Christley

Andre de Toth was one of the best to ever do it. I've got several favorites but DAY OF THE OUTLAW and PLAY DIRTY are two of the greatest films ever made.

Jason Chapa

I forgot how GOOD Hess’s Price impression is. They’re a fricken medium!

Macon Leighton

Is this guy trying to be meta? Is this a society joke?

Michael S. Judge

I once went through the security line next to Steven Tyler at Logan Airport in Boston. That guy is maaaaybe 5'5", and he has the general physique and bearing of an elderly female yoga teacher who's been on fire for several months

demonsweat

"Do you have any artificial plates or limbs?" "Not really, no."

Chris

Play Dirty is a wild fucking ride

Jaime Christley

I really like THE DIRTY DOZEN (and generally think the world of Robert Aldrich) but PD was supposed to be a DIRTY DOZEN-esque cash grab and imo it's a real "the student has become the master" type situation.

justdave

You should have asked him what sex is like

Michael S. Judge

I actually did spend most of the time staring at him and thinking "This guy straight-up molested a 13-year-old"

K H

Lincoln held elections during a CIVIL. WAR. You think you have an excuse to delay slop service?! Suweeee! Suweeeee!

justdave

Gross. I had a similarly upsetting experience seeing dog the bounty hunter. It's like -"look honey, a demon!"

Shiv

him being a demon exactly my height is worse somehow. i hope to never see him at Logan

Hesse Deni

His daughter said after he died that he was bi and would have gentlemen at the house all the time when she was growing up. You can actually hear his daughter in the House of Wax intro of the ep! She’s the one who says “my dad loved the visual arts”

Hesse Deni

Because they’re beautiful

THEKILLERWHALE

Also, any feasible socialist praxis in America focuses on a small vanguard of ideologically committed Rich Evans' ready to accelerate and guide any nascent revolutionary sentiment.

rough customer

Love movie mindset but Theda is a terrible guest

jackalltogether

The year is 1958. White men legally murder black people for not stepping off the sidewalk in front of them. Rates of domestic violence and marital rape approach 100%. Every 19 year old boy has slaughtered one thousand Koreans. And the silliest, gayest man in America is regarded the way we would Art the Clown

Freeman Ryan

Hesse and Will, you two have ideal podcasting chemistry, please make many more podcasts together

Gooch Immane

"In a time when it was considerably harder to dissolve a marriage than to dissolve a rat"

Gooch Immane

You'd prefer a Daily Wire kino doofus to A+ shimbo Theda?

T

Never stop doing a Vincent Price episode every season of Ghoulvie Screamset

Yarblockos

Did Rick & Morty steal the acid vat idea from this movie?

A Loon

House of Wax is my 70s kid home with a fever watching daytime TV nightmare fuel movie, may have to actually re-watch it now.

Degrassi Knoll

quite possibly....waiting for em to float up looked v. familiar

J.P. McD.

Theda was great, keep bringing her back please!

Mangomoosh

Buttface, Mr. Tubesocks the clown 🤡 is asking for you in the chapo chat.

TerraBones

I like the scary movie episodes

Gucci Brandt

Imagine being William h Macy and being typecast as a cuck

Shiv

“It’s hard to have fun with there’s a nervous guy with a knife, just standing there!” PERIOD

Gooch Immane

That said, somebody like Jacques would objectively be a complete ADHD trainwreck.

Kirstwb

Katherine movie mindset ep next season pls!!!!!

Klemke

Damnel's observations on Price not needing a prestige vehicle to be brilliant is very apt. I would recommend "Madhouse" as another good Vincent Price movie, opposite Peter Cushing. Kinda meta in a way I don't normally like but it's solid throughout and the ending goes WAY off the rails in a way that worked for me. Dr. Phibes too
