The Majority Report’s Sam Seder joins us today to share some deep research into American Stupids. We look at Trump’s weekend announcements regarding American film production & re-opening Alcatraz, both seemingly inspired by a TV broadcast of “Escape From Alcatraz” in West Palm Beach last Saturday. We also discuss Sam’s recent debate appearances including the “vs. 20 Conservatives” video, and how it’s not the stupidity but the confidence that’s really astounding. Finally, for the main course for today’s ep, the massive profile on John Fetterman’s deteriorating mental competence, and how the most offensive part of the scandal is the staffers who covered for him now seeking to cover their own asses.

He spent the entire last election cycle pointing out that voting is not a moral act, it's an exercise in harm reduction. So he recommended not making your vote an artistic expression of your personality or moral beliefs, but instead regard it as a practical act that is entirely overshadowed by the much more relevant political activism one does (i.e . unionizing your workplace, participating in protests, organizing a tenant's union). He also repeatedly acknowledged that the genocide in Gaza was a bridge too far for some people, and not voting for Harris over it was an understandable position, just not the calculus he uses or encourages other people to use. So no, he was not "yelling" at people that if they didn't vote democrat they're worse than genocide perpetrators. You seem very emotionally invested in that though, so you do you.

I think that Sam was making a point about the average sympathetic American who'd be turned off by genocide. I don't think he's saying that he'd expect Mahmoud Khalil to support Harris for harm reduction. His point was that Harris gave us nothing, that his job is basically to watch everything and even he with his sympathy to the dems must conclude that anyone who cared about Palestine was gonna get absolutely nothing. That we had no reason to believe that a Harris administration would do anything different than Biden, even if he thinks she was less of a pig in general. I think that's a little fair. Whether we agree that slight degrees of insane imperialism are worth supporting over each other is a place where Sam and us clearly disagree on - but that's a different topic than him speaking down to people of conscience.

The idea is that your vote is meaningless at the federal level, withholding it or not doesn’t matter, so might as well pull the lever for the democrat if you’re voting. The right has been heavily invested in state and local level politics for decades now, and it paid off massively during Obama’s presidency. Besides the huge House gains in 2010 and Senate gains in 2014 (and all the results that came of that), they took the majority of state governor seats in 2010 and have had a majority since. Don’t discount local electoralism completely just because the national Democratic Party can’t and won’t do anything for the working class. The more local you get, the more removed the political leadership is from the national apparatus and the more malleable they are. As a result fewer people are needed to enact real material change. Just as an example, the city council where I live was going to enact a TIF to build and subsidize a basketball arena/entertainment complex for our large state university without holding a vote on it (mainly because they knew it was a pretty unpopular idea). People in town were pissed, and there was a drive to get petition signatures to force a citywide vote on it. The petition got about 12K signatures in a city of 130K people, and while the petition is being challenged by developers and the local CoC, there’s a good chance it will stand and a citywide vote will happen. We also just voted out the old mayor and 2 councilors who were all CoC stooges and replaced them with people who are actually working class (two of them are teachers, and our new mayor moonlights as the door guy to a local music joint).

Governor he actively sought out the DSA endorsement -- not something that someone does if he is trying to position himself to the center or right-center. He ran as an advocate of single-payer, Medicare for All. You guys think this is Seder’s first time on? They’ve been pals/sorta unofficially linked since day one—wait till you find out their offices shared a building and that the host who has collaborated with Sam/MR-World the most is likely none other than Matt Christman (pretty sure he was just on w/ Sam in the last couple years not long before he went out) - The idea that there is enormous political daylight between Sam and the Chapo guys. It may not be a perfect circle, but there is more than enough overlap to justify collaborating if you aren’t a maladjusted weirdo with mashed potatoes between your ears - What’s up with the Pod Save/NPR comparisons—why do people think that? Seder is def a bit more lib-coded and wonky than the Chapo guys (the shows deviate a bit formally speaking and in terms of aim—plus MR started in a vastly different media landscape long before the online edgelords and ML cosplayers of today’s freakshow alt-media environment ).
