Chapo Chief Foreign Policy correspondent Derek Davison joins us first to continue monitoring the situation in the middle east: the continuing missile war between Israel and Iran, Trump’s disgusting will-he-or-won’t-he act, the fatalistic depravity of the whole thing, and where we might go from here.

Then: Derek is joined by his co-host & returning guest Eleanor Janega to discuss their new & shockingly relevant history mini-series on the Crusades! We discuss the exceedingly stupid historical context and characters of the medieval crusades, what they were actually about, what they actually accomplished, and how these conflicts maintain enduring relevance among the exceedingly stupid would-be-Crusaders of today.

How crazy is it that Tucker Carlson is braver than the corporate media and Democrat libs about doing the Bush Administration all over again? The only real difference, if Kamala had won, is that libs would be at brunch while ICE would still be ICE and we’d still be about to invade Iran.

Unfortunately, don't think Will's correct to say this war is overwhelmingly unpopular, polls are showing a lot of splits and a low of range in results depending on how the question is framed.

Chapo Bath House

I don't want to alarm anyone but I saw a story from April that a rare manul has been spotted in Iran. It has a lot of orange in its coat, as Felix has predicted

Elai Kehler

Ded1000

Urgh "London is the only good place in england" is such a tell

Declan Kennedy

I think Derek is correct about the future of the region; all states will have a choice to either become another KSA and be allowed to run a fiefdom of slavery and oppression as long as they keep doing our bidding, but if they can't agree to that, or they don't have anything we really want from them, then they get turned into a chaotic bloodbath for an entire generation so that Israelis can get their Pizza Condom deliveries without their Doordasher getting hit by a ballistic missile. Seems really bad to me but I'm not a geopolitics guy, I'm just an Australian who is pretty sure our government is already directly helping with this operation given that the Israeli ambassador was on a news show this week gloating about the "close cooperation" between our governments, while our foreign minister keeps urging Iran to return to the table without acknowledging that Israel blew the table and all the chairs up already.

Ana

I've been saying it for years: the only thing that will stop the endless warmongering is when bombs or missiles finally reign down on U.S. cities. Americans need to face real consequences for the actions of our government. It's an awful thing to say, but it's the truth.

Taylor Markey

The Calvinist Christian high school I went to evidently just learned about the crusades and recently changed the mascot from the Crusaders to the Defenders lol

THEKILLERWHALE

I think that Israel is a fascist state engaging in ethnic cleansing and that furthering its aims is evil. Thus, I would consider it morally wrong to remain an Israeli national given the choice. But I am a US dual citizen and I no longer live there. I am contemplating renouncing my citizenship because it is increasingly clear that this is less tail wagging the dog and more a partnership in domination and evil. I do not like purely symbolic, conscious easing acts, but I also cannot contribute, however indirectly, to a state project that I consider evil. The only difference is I do not think there is too much more to Israel than genocide and small vestiges of the native culture, but there is a lot going on in the US and genuinely positive and emancipatory traditions. So not sure what I will do but this has been weighing on me.

Agent Grange

I'm glad we're all starting to come to terms with the unassailable truth that Israel isn't just like a "normal" client state. South Korea and Savimbi's Angola didn't penetrate our politics like Israel has, there's a real material difference here that can't be ignored. As America becomes more and more for sale and the powers that be are increasingly only concerned about stripping the copper wire out of our institutions they've given Israel more and more ability to assert itself in our politics by just straight up paying people off. It really feels like it's morphed into a genuine case of the tail wagging the dog, and I think it's only our own good nature as leftists that have prevented us from confronting this out of some sincere concern that to even suggest that Israel might control aspects of America sounds anti-semitic. And I'm sorry. Yes of course America is involved in directing them to some extent and our imperial institutions benefit from their activities. But if it seems too bad and icky to insinuate that our lives are more and more becoming controlled by the whims of Israel because it sounds similar to antiemetic tropes that's... Kind of the fault of the Zionists and the people enabling them for turning that into our material reality.

Mac daddy

Great episode especially the Crusades stuff.. that shit was so insane, the crusaders went 1 for 5 and so many people still think they were the 90s Bulls lol. Also Eleanor and Derek is a sick combination, they both rule

S.E. Nyarady

I love Life'll Kill Ya & Ourselves To Know is one of my favorite songs on there almost cried at that transition ty dudes 🙏

Agent Grange

Also obviously the first, primary, and only sympathetic victims of this are going to be the people in the region that we murder and brutalize. But I really really wonder if the Zionists have done the calculus about what happens when even if we win 100,000 zoomer servicemen get smoked in the mountains around Tehran and the survivors come home to an even shittier and more dystopian United States after it becomes unambiguously clear that this was all done for the benefit of Israel. As someone with Jewish heritage, I feel fucking sick thinking about the genuine horrific antisemitism that's going to come out of the Gen Z Friedkorps when all this is over and the boomerang comes back.

I love how you can clearly tell Carlson's really only reason he doesn't want to go to war with Iran because literally things the United States will turned into a failed state if we keep doing this shit ( obviously true in the long run but wrong reason to not want to invade other countries.)

I can't repeat it enough: Israel and Ukraine both used the destruction of empty buildings as a proxy for death while they themselves deliberately targeted and murdered civilians because they knew CNN would hide it. Real estate is more important to the West than life is.

Zach H.

The Crusades described this way is just Amish Rumspringa with murder.

Oliver Clozov

the taco thing seems like it's the logical endpoint of two-party lesser evil thinking. if you can just goad the other party into doing the most irresponsible, destructive, fucked up things you can think of, come the next election you can just point to how bad they did... and that's why the 2028 democratic platform will be a coordinated drawdown of ground forces in iran

I’m really starting to think Trump is a slave to his own “deep state”, that is lock step with Israel. And Israel undermined the negotiations by bombing. He’s fucked. He actually doesn’t know what he’s going to do.

Jesse Brukman

Transatlantic "R" heavy episode. Wonderful.

The current US administration knows that the UN can/will do nothing b/c they basically own the UN. The US absolutely will need to be effectively destroyed/dismantled to be stopped. At this point it's clear that it's the only way. Not because I believe in "heroic last stands", but because there is no real alternative, Iran should build nukes for deterrence like NK and then full out retaliate by (almost) any means necessary to Israel. There will be no peaceful solution when dealing with the US or Israel. They are both genocidal nations. They are the bad guys, if we're moralizing it.

K H

I don't think Iran can build them fast enough. Additionally, DC sickos are losing their belief in mutually assured destruction. Unless the failure of Israel's missile intercept system was a wake up call(unlikely) they believe the US could win a nuclear war and come out ahead. The UN must dissolve. That seems pretty doable. Another coalition should form without the security council. Much less accommodating to the superpowers like China and Russia, but ultimately more secure than continuing to let the US act with impunity. As last stands go, if enough people stopped working it would make war impossible. Violent insurrection for sure takes less guys, but the buy in is way higher and outcome more uncertain. The only saving grace is the fact this machine is not actually designed to hurt anyone, just to funnel capital to the fewest possible hands. I suppose it is possible that forced labor is imposed on the whole population, but I really don't think they have the guys for that.

The Playing Field

Recalling years ago when Felix went on Pod Save America and got cut for saying Iran should develop nuclear weapons. The Biederman prophecy continues to unfold.

There's this trick in "change management" - an offshoot of management consulting (aka "stealing from the employees") - where you meet objections by allowing them to be fully aired before going on to do whatever you've already decided to do. It makes the subjects of your decisions feel heard and more likely to go along. I think legacy media and right wing media play similar types of tricks, with Tucker/Ted being an example. Tucker going after Ted is the pressure valve to let the hogs feel heard as the regime does whatever it's gonna do. I would, however, push back a little on the sentiment that there's "no real resistance" to what's happening. We had millions in the streets last weekend. While it was not explicitly about Israel-Iran, it was about the regime, and it was hardly nothing. I think there could be major pushback on direct involvement. To what effect we'll have to see. But it seems like it has the potential to fuel an even more significant response from the public. My the heart breaks for those directly impacted by these evil people.

Appreciate your message at the end of the first hour, Will. Having family in Tehran at this moment is a hellish feeling.

I’ve been on the grill pill since dr christman prescribed it in 2020, shit sounds bad tho

Mattc83

Another absolute perfect episode thanks for some light in this ocean of sludge.

Nathan

I don’t think it’s that orchestrated and if you look at what the admin did to Mahmoud Khalil, they don’t want people fully airing their opposition to Israel. Tucker is just voicing the obvious position and the admin is not currently powerful enough to silence him. But, the end goal is every criticism of Israel will be branded as antisemitism (in another part of the interview Cruz called Tucker an antisemite) and antisemitism will not be tolerated anywhere.

birdguy123457

The old world is ending, and the new struggles to be born

Nathan

The hersh reporting is that the decision to go to war with Iran has already been made and Trump is just waiting until this weekend to minimize stock market freakout. We’re moving carrier groups in the area so looks likely to be true. We’ll know in a day or so if it’s right.

Michael

“Partially going on crusade because it is only the possibility that they have for gaining any land.” Insert the “It’s Free Real Estate” drop.

Miles_B

Israel is a different story. I was talking about opposition to war, unpopular legislation etc. Republican message discipline is studied in classrooms. This is absolutely a tactic. The amount of collusion is not that important when they're all going off the same playbook.

Chapo Bath House

That's a valid takeaway from Ukraine, but another thing people responded to were videos of farmers commandeering enemy tanks and towing them away on tractors. I know very little about Iranian agriculture, but I know they've got to have more farmers than Israel by orders of magnitude

Declan Hertel

genuinely love Kingdom of Heaven partly because it’s where Ridley Scott’s I Will Have Multiple Characters Explicate the Themes of This Movie kind of works. the idea these Deus Vult morons could watch a movie with several scenes where a dude turns to the camera and says “seems like religion compels men to do bad things in the name of goodness, huh” and think the point is that the Crusades were cool… depressing

ADIFT

From the way they discussed it, the doc seems more about the author's sexual pathologies and hatred of the english than historical fact. They seem more biased about the crusades than marble statue avis. Black halberd mead company was very funny.

James Burkeen

I love Eleanor. She had one of my favorite takes on the Reformation : they took away “Heaven Mommy” (I.e. Marian Devotion), and the ability to have a “guy on the inside” (Communion of the Saints)- and all they had to replace it was endless posting and articles

Bobi Jon-son Kenobi

I (very briefly) learned about the Crusades in community college and I always felt they’d be prime material for a farcical dark comedy. It really is one of the dumbest historical periods, and it’s telling about the kind of person that like that stuff

plainwrap

The post-Crusades in Europe definitely has some Black Rifle Coffee parallels. There was a lot of whining about Crusader stolen valor and knights having pissing contests about who did what. Lots of accounts of the returning Crusaders being violent antisocial jerks. Jerusalem itself has walls vandalised with cross graffiti and there are accounts of them learning about tattoos from Egyptians so even the Pete Hegseth aesthetic is period appropriate. Time is a flat circle.

lars

The insane Baptist school I went to in Tacoma had the Crusaders as their school mascot. I apologize for my crusading.

K H

Tucker is a weather vane. He sees what is coming is all. We are approaching a cataclysm within the US itself.

K H

First ever loss of an aircraft carrier since WW2 is likely. So many military wives will need comforting. A battalion of Jodis.

Miles_B

If they're routinely doing this sort of stuff at even small businesses, it's not a huge stretch to assume they're doing something similar across a vast, billionaire-funded propaganda machine. Let's not forget that Tucker "owned" someone who is widely hated even in conservative circles.

K H

The Republicans don't want the troops they claim to support to have radiation scrubbers!

K H

FN FiveSeveN can pierce soft armor for those interested.

K H

Probably because Israel funds terrorists that are a threat to Iran...and also just fucks with Iran all the time.

We are 200 years away from the Hitlers vs the WildaDrones play off.

Only Americans would label another country responding in kind to being bombed in a war of aggression started by the U.S. as "AMERICA getting attacked." The arrogance and contempt for reality is out of control in this country. And there is no comparison between, say, Pearl Harbor or 9/11 and the kind of scenario I'm talking about. The endless 21st century American war drive is justified in very large part on the principle that what happens over there STAYS OVER THERE. That's what makes the mischief tolerable to the average American. The rubes can handle the occasional screw up like 9/11 since that's viewed as a one-off, but not consistently being bombed every day for no good reason besides General Dynamics' and Lockheed's quarterly earning reports. When the foreigners start directly firing back at us then the Pentagon's mischief will suddenly become a lot less tolerable to people.

Snooder87

There is something absolutely rage inducing about hearing Chapo of all people talk about "those people who act like Trump is funny" as if they aren't fully in that group.

The theatrical release is genre slop, the director’s cut could have been a classic. It’s crazy how different they are.

kron

never saw the theatrical release, only know the good version

cornholio

Second half is pretty good, Derek and Eleanor seem fairly informed about the history. I gotta say though, this style of informal telling of history is really grating and just bad scholarship. Calling the crusaders “stupid dickheads” every 5 seconds is kinda funny the first time, but after awhile it starts to detract from the larger narrative. I won’t pretend to be well informed about the crusades but I can say that a good scholar/historian would at least attempt to situate crusader (and crusadee) worldviews in the impulse and reasoning for what they did. These weren’t random decisions made with little reason, on either side. They were derived from larger ideological and cultural imperatives that informed their motives. I think they know what they’re talking about but there’s no need to dumb everything down with modern colloquialisms and the implication that decisions were made based on ethnic/racial/basic religious motivations. They skirt around a truly nuanced discussion without ever really landing on it

Dick Wolf

Think Eleanor is from Tacoma as well, so all you weird freaks down there are really eating today.

ERIC

Eric Jacobsen

I took one or two semesters on the Crusades in college. The story of Richard the Lion-Hearted, as it was explained to me, is that he was one of three major kings who was leading this, but he wasn’t really considered “the big guy.” He was like a pampered princeling whom nobody thought much of. Instead, there was this Chad from Germany who was expected to be the hero of the story. Then chad (his name escapes me) crossed this river around the border between Germany and France in his armor, tripped, and drowned. Two years later GWB would get elected president and was immediately in over his head in the war, and I thought, “fuck, our president is Richard the Lion-Hearted, that’s him.”

Eric Jacobsen

Oh, one other story about Richard. Part of the semester involved reading primary sources from the Palestinians of the time. There aren’t many, of course, and the professor explained the effects of oral storytelling on the perception of time — when you’re talking about something that happened to your ancestors, even if it was a thousand years ago it kind of comes across as talking about your grandparents, so even today the notion of crusades in the Middle East are sort of fresh in everyone’s memories. Anyway he said that when parents want their kids to behave, instead of saying “the bogeyman will get you” they say “Richard will come for you.” I cannot vouch for the veracity of this but it was a pretty funny idea.

lars

I didn't realize it isn't TBS anymore. 8th grade and final year before I left we had a guest speaker in our science class who gave a talk on the 'mark of the beast' and how we'd all have microchips in our hands by 2000. A classical education.

lars

History podcasters and serial killers. The Puget Sound represents.

Dan Young

A good indication is that Henry II, generally one considered the most competent king of the era around the time the third crusade was getting rolling had less than no interest in actually going. He fucked around with the pope and pretended he would sometimes but he saw no reason to burn to death in the desert for Jerusalem when he had his own kingdom to look after. Him dying and it going to his son Richard is basically the only reason England properly got involved at all.

Let's Get Medieval

Regarding the last part, black pepper was a huge hit after the first crusade. Some cookbooks included instructions to heap black pepper onto whatever you were making. This next part comes from a long way back in my memory, so please forgive any mistakes here. Also, many Greek philosophical and mathematical texts which were scarce or forgotten in western Europe had been long preserved and studied by Arabic speaking scholars. These texts, combined with the extensive discoveries of mathematicians in places like Baghdad, got injected into western Europe and, I believe, helped spur the 12th century Renaissance that she spoke of. So when people speak of the traditions of "the west" and cite the ancient Greek philosophers, it's important to note that, outside of maybe Byzantium, those texts were kept alive by scholars in the Muslim world.

ADIFT

I don't think "Richard wanted Saladin to cuck him and deflower his sister. Also he was a loser ... and gay. No wonder, he's from terf island" is a normal take. It seems bitter and culture war-y and a little rapey. The crusades were not cool or good. More farcical and tragic. All kings, but especially at this time period, just incompetently get people killed for their vain ambition. I'm sure the actual doc is fine and it was just weird commentary in a relaxed setting.

ERIC

You got ratiod hard and instead of having an introspective moment you double down and attack because you are too insecure. This was a damn trailer for their series! It's a hook! The Crusader Knight/black rifle thing almost happened; needed a few more years to get to the siege of Vienna by the Turks, who were defeated by the wilds of a crafty Polish officer sneaking through their camps and coordinating a flanking attack. For his service, he was rewarded the pick of the spoils after the Turks turned tail, and he chose the bags of green coffee that the Vietnamese had never seen, but he had he opened the first coffee shop in the city called blue bottle.

The protests were organized by progressive groups across the country. Maybe some of the people who went were conservative or centrist, but I can't find any details on who went. Genuinely curious if you have details to share. In any case though, people are starting to push back against the regime, and the regime jumping into a broadly unpopular conflict is going to garner more pushback. Nobody can say how this will cash out electorally, and there's room for criticism with the protests themselves. Robert Evans, for example, pointed out that there weren't any real demands. But like I said, it's hardly nothing.

One of the best Chapos in a while despite everything going on

Oliver Clozov

yep, our country is the one that exports violence against civilian populations all across the world. to be indignified when it comes home would be oblivious. it puts us all in danger

bruce

“why are the stupid losers stupid”

Gooch Immane

Mossad paid a prop maker to make a few of those and they get checked out of a special library to wave around whenever necessary

Zen Ben

Eleanor Janega is a great new voice on Chapo. My kind of girl: smart and funny.

Steve

Rachael Maddow?

cornholio

lol did you not start the attacks halfwit? I said nothing about depth, my issue (as I made clear) was the informal narrative style mainly. “Lib out” christ dude you’re either 50 or impaired if you think that’s funny. Maybe you should have an introspective moment, and realize I said nothing about Eleanor specifically and you called me a misogynist. Reading comprehension is difficult I know, you must be from on a them southern states. Dumb asshole.

ERIC

Dude, you are libing out saying I'm a boomer from the south to describe why I'm wrong. I think you're a Zionist like figure feeling attacked for being told to go back home. You're such a weak comment warrior.

cornholio

lol southern cuz ur reading comprehension is dog shit, but naturally you wouldn’t have caught that. And then you call me a Zionist lol. I guess we will go with impaired.

cornholio

The look at me I’m an American in England of self selected adult accents

ERIC

Not doing yourself any favors on the "I'm not a misogynist" comment bub.

THEKILLERWHALE

Jesus. Will is already planning new and more depraved ways to pronounce "rahther".

Chubby Justin

YES! I AM A STUPID LOSER WHO WOULD GET MY ASS KILLED. Probably not even in battle. Probably from disease or dehydration or an infected sunburn. BUT MY SOUL WOULD BE GUARANTEED TO GET INTO HEAVEN, BABY!

Devin

Just subscribed to Welcome to the Crusades 💪🏼 looking forward to dying of dysentery in a field full of stinking, screaming men

Jack
