Resident Clint-ologist John Semley is back to look at two of Eastwood’s great collaborations with director Don Siegel: 1971’s The Beguiled and 1979’s Escape from Alcatraz. Two tough guy classics showcasing Clint’s surprisingly nuanced-through-gritted teeth performance style

The Beguiled finds Clint as a union soldier injured behind enemy lines, taken in for recuperation by the extremely repressed ladies of a Confederate girls’ seminary.  Clint proceeds to use his sexual swagger to charm each of these southern belles in turn, but as the web of seduction (and eventually violence) spins out of control, Clint realize he mayb not be in paradise, but purgatory.

Jumping from Clint vs. Women to Clint and Da Boys, we turn to Escape from Alcatraz, an extremely process oriented film set in actual prison, and depicting the shockingly true story of a confirmed breakout from the Rock. Clint builds his crew, brings prison justice to other inmates, confronts evil in the form of Patrick McGoohan’s nameless warden, all with a soft spot for chrysanthemums.

Keep an eye out for John’s essay in the forthcoming “The Critical Companion to Clint Eastwood”

Harry Sachs

Wasn’t expecting a Red Green reference from MM

Leebos

I was in a relationship with a girl who was living in a house of all white Southerners in the North, and at one point, I joked that I had been Beguiled, and she called the joke anti-Southern. I should've seen the writing on the wall 😅

Munir hakim

"Who beguiles the beguiler?! The beguiled!" Idk why that was so funny

Sam Bondurant

Are cotillion classes not a thing up north?

Joe McIntyre

The Butts character was actually based on a real 4th member who didn't make it out in time with them

Hardcore Virgin

For Columbo, McGoohan played Colonel Lyle C. Rumford headmaster of a boys military academy. This was in 74 and the role seems like a kind of precursor to his warden character. McGoohan also has something in that episode called a Boodle Boy. Who comes to his room and blows a horn and fetches him coffee.

Anomalie

They can't reopen Alcatraz cuz everyone knows how to escape now!

Peen Israel

Dear Mr. Menacher and Ms. Deni, Please do Martin Brest’s 1988 film “Midnight Run” next season of MM. Thank you. Yours truly, Peen

AbeLinkin

Boycotting MM until they either do Kubrick films, particularly 2001, or Heat. Do one for the non extreme film snobs I beg of you.

Jack

How's your leg doin these days Leebos

Leebos

Question for John, priest or maiden?

AbeLinkin

Yeah you’re both right but I want what I want

Hesse's laugh is so magical and infectious

Yevka D

i knew a kid named nick butts

Eamon Short

Hesse and the other guy just going "beguiled" and it's derivatives over and over, just reminds me of MST3K just going "manos the hands of fate" two dozen times during the boring opening

Branden Pedersen

It’s weird but I think this is maybe the best episode so far. 🙏

Eamon Short

Oh hell yeah, more Lalo Schifrin praise. As I said before, Peter Guold, Lalo's TV protect needle dropping 'Jim on the move' from the mission impossible TV soundtrack when Jimmy McGill finally emerges out of 'Gene Tachiovic' is the greatest moments of re-purposing of another works score music ever

MCL

Alcatraz means pelican

Donnie Stellmaker

Please do a “Lesser Schwarzenegger” episode and it must be “Raw Deal” and “Commando.”

nick

Will’s assessment of Union soldiers (brutish louts who couldn’t care less about ending slavery) is very different from Matt’s (they were a revolutionary force)

Drew

Yeah it's well documented that true believers abolitionists were indeed disproportionately represented among the troops, and it was a genuinely popular stance among the north anyway.

Sam

My brother in Christ - I came here to say the exact same thing. And it’s not really just about what Matt says, per se. It’s about the incredible volume of source material and scholarly evidence available that Matt uses to paint the picture. The most important and violent campaigns of the war occur after the emancipation proclamation, and the Union soldiers overwhelmingly voted to reelect Lincoln, and they knew exactly what they were fighting and dying for. They were nowhere near as confused about the stakes and purpose of the war as we are today.
