Comedy legend Larry Charles (Fridays, Seinfeld, Borat, Curb Your Enthusiasm & much more) returns to the show to discuss his new book Comedy Samurai: Forty Years of Blood, Guts, and Laughter. We have a wide ranging discussion of Larry’s life in comedy including post-war Brooklyn as a comedy incubator, grinding out avant-garde sketch comedy with Andy Kaufman, the prevalence of coke and other drugs in the comedy writing scene, getting tackled by the Secret Service trying to get a joint to Jimmy Carter’s sister, and the difficulties in comedic creative relationships. Larry also gets candid about his disappointment with the prevalence of zionism among his erstwhile comedy partners, and we talk about the humanizing force of humor in the face tragedy and despair.

Anthrope Salmagundi

I’ve been a fan of Larry Charles’ work ever since I found out he did Dilbert with Scott Adams. P.S. the Seinfeld DVD commentary tracks make for excellent sleep ASMR, take my word for it. P.P.S the thumbnail is from the premiere of Religulous, the last time Bill Maher was an entertaining shitstain, as opposed to just a shitstain.

Reece Coren

literally watching the pez dispenser as i got this notification omg i’m so excited

Dee Rubes

Get ‘em, Chris!

Markus Kraköwski

"It taps into a forbidden place, like Felix's mom" 💀

Cameron Van Berkum

I think the pre-order link might need some correcting, it seems to take one to the good egg launch page but no preorder for anything called year zero nor chapo

interzoa

Chris's voice is so smooth I can listen to him shut down closeted neoliberals all night

Declan Kennedy

man I know it wasn't the point but I lost it when Larry said "Felix's mom; a forbidden place!" great interview lol

Abundance libs on life support, Chris Wade sought for questioning

K H

I would be kind of pissed if you guys had me listen to some bullshit about abundance. The chancery court crisis was bad enough. Glad valuable spite was extracted from this. Armand, fuck you for trying to make us listen to that bullshit.

Salt M. Bank

Show starting with angry Chris goes hard

Billiam

epic cold open

Last Years Man

When you piss off Chris, you've done fucked up. With that music library of his, he probably knows 100 million killer diss tracks.

THEKILLERWHALE

I like his point about density and a rich public life turning Kingston into a musical center and Brooklyn into a comedy center. I am seeing this with my son and soccer in a pretty dense European city. The kid plays literally 7 days a week. It is a game that can be played in some capacity on pretty much any surface. So he will meet the other kids on the street and just have a quick game of keep away or one on one. The multiplier affect of an entire city breathing the game just emphasizes the difference between an organic football culture and an astroturfed version that exploits wealth and access to try to achieve the same ends.

Hugh Jazz

Felix’ excitement when Larry brought up Red Fox was palpable

christoph.s

To the point at the very end about Gaza and the absurd propaganda vid of the „Gaza humanitarian foundation“ I am reminded when Hakim (from the depropgram boys) told this story of growing up in Iraq during the war. Once an Abrahams tank stopped in his family’s garden and the soldier getting out of the hatch had a lollipop in his mouth. They exchanged confused looks.

Morgan

Talk that shit Chris!

George Mitri

What a balm. Thanks Larry Charles for being the hero I needed 👍🏻

Travis

Felix begins speaking at 5 minutes and 57 seconds

Archie MacLellan

Had a wee look on the website for the chapo comic. Couldn't find it. Anyone else have any luck?

Starting with gossip? PERIOD

Peri

fuck yeah chris cook that fraud

Zach H.

It wouldn’t be a Lib project if they weren’t bitching about this show dissing them somehow by not soft pedaling their bullshit for them.

Tim Mullen

Chris opened a can of whoop ass on those abundant frauds. Also that Armand guy is a creepy looking weirdo

Santiago Perera

Incredible pronunciation of the word finite from Felix

Watermane

Why would you intro an episode with multiple murders?

Mungo Franczak

This episode got me to finally read The Crowd by Gustave le Bon

peter_mcc

this intro had me clacking an ugly little fan & screaming YAAAAAS DIVA GO OFFFFF DRAG HA i knew you’re a real one chris <3

Josh Bobst

The big takeaway today is that Chris still has a Facebook. Dude, what are you doing? I deleted mine the same day I read Sean Parker quoted as saying we knew what we were doing. We knew it was wrong. We did it anyway. That was in 2018, I'm pretty sure.

Shane

Chris “I’m Nice” Wade woke up and chose abundant violent.

Riley Stratton

If you google Derrick, the AI says he killed 5 people in a car crash last year. (not true, still funny to pretend tho)

Stop the Spread

Did you ask him what he thought of Seinfeld’s girlfriend in 1993?

K H

Bless Chris for doing the work of being personable. I've always said he is the Michael Jordan of the show.

Isaac

Chris putting the righteous in righteous indignation. Man’s nice, but you’ll never know now. Sad!

THEKILLERWHALE

Thank you Chris for choosing not to platform these abundance radicals and their extreme centrism. May their ridiculous agenda die in obscurity.

HuffingGasInTheShed

Overburdened to the point of only self-sympathy. That’s a very good observation

Why are the terms good faith bad faith all over the place right now?! That and perimenopause.

The policies him and Ezra are proposing will kill a whole lot more, so it’s pretty on brand.

EaZy E

I've been hooting for a duck hunt. Call back

Schwartz666

I too love tapping a forbidden place... like Felix's mom! heyooooo 😏

Justin

I cannot imagine an episode with the abundance guys that wasn't horribly uncomfortable— that didn't end with Felix in a simmering rage needling them on every point they make. (Maybe they should have had those dorks on, after all.)

Jordan

another reason could be their closeness to the black americans they kicked out the neighborhoods to accommodate them from Poland and Russia, stole their fear constantly and unresolved fear of death in America. Or it could be the Talmud or temple that makes them funny too.

Emily Richardson

I love Chris. I love the sassiness and I love the refusal to engage with the abundance bullshit.

Nate Wood

Kainien Morel

I have a newfound sympathy for Larry Charles, literal in the sense that despite being in my late thirties, I only had a vague awareness of him adjacent to my limited experience with the work of Larry David, etc. (i.e. being a foreigner who grew up foreign), for both the obvious challenges he faces in being, and staying funny (something I don’t think I’ve accomplished, even by my own nationality’s standards), but having to come to terms with something I already had a sense of when I first came to the United States 20 years ago, and certainly knew ten years ago: Sacha Baron Cohen was always a raging Islamophobe and Zionist. He certainly was the first time I saw BORAT, which I won’t claim wasn’t funny in the essential sense of how it strove to be “funny”; that is, the essential joke at the start, though not the end, of the character of Borat Sagdiyev, is that Kazakhs or Kazakhstanis, to a mostly western and overwhelmingly Anglophone audience, are slightly more fake a people than, say, hobbits or wookiees. Whereas to anyone born and educated in the Sinophone world, there’s just a foreign (or not so foreign, depending on where you are) people with a foreign language that, unlike an American, you actually might meet and interact with sometime in your lifetime not by means of a rich Jewish Briton playing a meticulously crafted quasi-Romanian incestuous rapist. They’re no more imaginary than, say, Mexicans or Filipinos or Egyptians, and their admittedly-foreign homeland no more imaginary than Mexico or the Philippines or Egypt (unless you’re one of the million or so Kazakhs living in China, then you’re just one of them). What that means is that the opening salvo of BORAT’s comedy arsenal, extensive and devastating as it is, lands like a wet fart on a jumbotron basically anywhere in Asia: is it funny? Sure, it can be. Is it loud? Absolutely. Is it a work of genius? No. It’s just slapstick racist yellowface, in a not-exactly-short tradition of American and English yellowface comedy. Maybe Larry—and Cohen---deserve more credit for the comedic vehicle that manages to exist around an otherwise kind of boring concept (and it really shines a light on Larry’s reflection of the success of BORAT versus the BRUNO; imagine, if you can, “Central Asians” being almost as real as vaguely “Germanic homosexuals” to Americans). To quote a Russian friend of mine who watched BORAT, and mostly liked it, “It’s still pretty funny, but that part of the joke doesn’t work here (or anywhere a million Kazakh people live and you can eat their cuisine, read their social media or see them on television).” Would I have found it funnier if I hadn’t already seen people from Kazakhstan on television and found they looked like me (or more accurately, one of my nieces or cousins?). As Will immediately identified: comedy is so utterly subjective and temporal. An unfunny foreigner from what I think CHAPO TRAP HOUSE wisdom would hold as a generally unfunny part of the world (secular, atheist, or Daoist Asia: not funny; Muslim or Catholic Asia: funny) would heartily agree, and I’m left wondering if that’s why I never had a “scales falling from my eyes” moment re: Cohen that Larry, and the seeming majority of Americans I’ve known who’ve at least enjoyed his comedy, seem to have realizing that, funny as it was, it was also comedy from an fanatical Zionist who wasn’t convinced Muslims were human like he was (and certainly not imaginary Kazakhs, who are only as real as Dhampir or Jedi). While I award myself a shiny gold star sticker for being more farsighted than the Chapo boys, or one of the most highly successful and accomplished American comedy writers with a career going back to before my birth, I’m obligated to add: it doesn’t mean Cohen's not actually funny (to the right audience). All evidence bears out that he is. Racist or bigoted humor has always been funny (to the right audience), just ask the producers of Looney Tunes or any other of those fabled pre-war American cartoonists. Look at very specific, very black-faced character from Will’s beloved DRAGON BALL Z; it’s certainly not just “an American thing.” As I’ve told others when I’ve aired the above complaint, “Laughing at a racist joke isn’t exactly laudable, but it’s not a war crime or ethic cleansing,” which only seems more relevant since 2023. And I don’t think you accomplish much or anything by holding the audience themselves to account for it. You can’t really argue with “MAH WAIFE!” having taken a Chapelle-esque place of honor in the eternal Anglophone comedy pantheon. We may’ve fucked over a couple generations of Kazakh athletes who have to listen to the theme from the show in lieu of their national anthem any time they place for a medal, but to United States of Burger, it was worth it. So, a good episode I wasn’t really expecting to enjoy. Well done, boys. And of course, my applause to Chris, our warrior-editor in the trenches. Keep fighting the actual good fight against the abundance evangelists.

Matthew

He walked so that Trump could run 🫡 RIP

K H

Remember when he ate a live bee? Classic.

K H

Chapo is almost always cordial. I only vaguely remember one time where they may have gotten into a shouting match, but I may have dreamed it? It would have been years ago now. How time and memory fly. They had some general on that was pissed about China doing basically what the US does via loans(or fear mongering they would). They were respectful of the old coot.

Max

Damn Chris tell us how u really feel

K H

Death! Death! Death to the IDF!

thicchatlogan

I listened to the abundance guys appearance on pod save america and it's stunning how intellectually lazy the whole thing is if you think about it for more than ten seconds. "we need to deregulate the housing market to increase supply and lower home costs!" okay, there are already tons of empty houses in America and institutional investors would prefer to sit on them rather than contribute to a lowering of the market rate by selling for less, how do you fix that via the free market? "we need to deregulate the housing market to increase supply and lower home costs!" it's all just reheated third way neoliberal politics for and by people that are professionally motivated to keep this total dud of an ideology in the conversation.

butterybiscuit

Isn’t Larry Charles a known collaborator on Sacha Baron Cohen’s Zionist claptrap?

RyGuy

I interviewed Chris once in college (see WXVU radio’s YouTube) and he was incredibly gracious and easy to work with. The fact the abundance guys got him tight demonstrates their lack of professionalism. Genuinely pretty shocking to lie about that

chowder_julius

Years and years ago I remember the boys ganging up on some doofus from Reason magazine but that stands out as a rare openly hostile Chapo interview

Casey

Chris, we don’t want the explanation of how CTH was actually extremely professional to abundance guys, we want you to give them da middle finger brother

William

Oh I KNOW you didn’t just say my Ohio boy isn’t nice

Return of The Mac 2nite

I like it when the jokes are explained why their funny good podcast episode. Next one on how sausage is made pls

thicchatlogan

I like this approach more because these sentient lanyard types definitely get more bent out of shape over someone calling them unprofessional than anything else

enter_krzysz

Lol, did Larry call Felix 'Matt' at the end?

Oliver Clozov

landlords and developers understand supply and demand. you're never going to trick them into flooding the market and crashing the value of the properties they already own. i like felix's analogy of it basically being like if the SPD in the weimar years made their platform "hear me out... what if we changed the fire code"

Oliver Clozov

that's exactly why i would have loved to hear such an episode. we need a "ted cruz/tucker carlson interview" of the left

Justin

I forget some of you were in middle school for the David Cross episode lol

Ben Burke

Can confirm Chris is shockingly easy to get in touch with for somebody with a platform of his size. When the dry boys did their southern tour a couple years ago, I reached out to ask if my DSA chapter could table at the show. Not only did Chris promptly reply and agree, he offered to have us double as a merch table in exchange for a portion of the profits. He gave me his unlocked phone with a square reader attached before going on stage for ~2 hours and followed through on his donation. Genuinely a very accessible dude

MCL

To answer Will‘s question about race and humor, I think we all know that white people drive a car like this but Black people they drive a car like this

Robert Peterson

He specifically talks about how he disagrees and even calls out SBC by name as someone who is wrong about Israel when Will mentions some other guys he’s worked with in the past

Cody Ross Rex

Larry David taught me how to be a man also

KyleMSherry

Get their asses, Chris!!!!

Never ever take any shit from these people. Good work, Chris.

Studio Novaya by Fredrick Edward

Great interview. Always hated Borat (too much punching down) but did enjoy watching Bruno while living in Berlin in a theater full of Germans who did not know what to do with themselves 😅

Clark

Those abundance weasels pulled the same shit on the Majority Report! I think it was Ezra, but one of them publicly claimed that nobody from the left would have them on, mentioning MR specifically. Sam Seder responded on air with a, 'we haven't seen anything from you, but maybe that's because we're very disorganized,' and offered to have him on the show, which is how the Sam vs Ezra abundance debate came about. Given that the MR email is, in fact, disorganized, I gave Ezra the benefit of the doubt, but NO MORE! That is shady as fuck

T33ny

Can you link or post the title of the MR video addressing the email mishap

gatito

no shade but pls listen to the ep, all your questions are answered and more

great episode - time to go veg boys! But, why no stories from Virgil lol?

tysonw81

I guess that for all their supposed cynicism they genuinely believed that good entertainers must be of a higher moral order than other people--that being able to be funny requires that the performer be intrinsically at some higher point of moral development.

Shiv

CHRIS RANT CHRIS RANT CHRIS RANT

tysonw81

Is part of the reason for posting stuff like this the need to believe that what they find funny is somehow elevated beyond mere entertainment? That, say, a dumb candid-camera style gross-out comedy like Borat (hey, whatever, if that's your thing) must be of some greater importance than it is if they like it?

Timothy Buttons

Man you don't have to listen to the episode if you don't want to

Julian

This reminded me that I also saw borat in theaters with my mom. I was like 11 and saved up singles and quarters to go see it, and my mom was willing to take me. People kept leaving the theater early, but we stayed the whole way through

Semine

Insanely good episode, absolutely loved Dangerous Comedy and thought it was one of the best documentary series, felt like it was watching Parts Unknown but with a comedy perspective instead of food. Wish he'd make more

Siddhartha

Yimbyism is patient zero of neoliberalism's fake leftist materialism push, a great riposte for owning leftists in Twitter threads but has zero purchase with anyone who's not of sub Matt Yglesias intelligence, so it's not surprising that all the usual suspects have seized on it as the hot new solution for getting the great unwashed onboard with feckless neoliberal centrism without angering the donor class after the total flameout of Biden/Harris.

Huge Logo

I remember Kaufman on Fridays and it did not seem To go well and Michael Richardson did not seem like he was finding any of it funny when he went and got the script and dropped it on Andy’s head and said something about here are your lines… Maybe that was supposed to go that way but I dunno

Clark

Sure, I think so. It'll take a sec to find, so sit tight

B b

One of my favorite interviews so far, instant classic

Kinetics Video

Should just roll with that. It's a promotion

M. Red

It's funny that their understanding of humor touches on part of the proposed biology for why we laugh. I come from a neuroscience background and part of the hypothesis for early laughter was that it was a kind of subconscious "it's all right" group message. The classic example is always primitive man hearing a bush rustle and immediately being struck with fear it's a predator. One would go investigate only find it to be the wind and laugh at the circumstance which immediately disarms the rest of the group of their anxiety.

FoxLord

I don’t know anything about the abundance stuff but I do know Chris is getting way too big for his damn britches. He think he Hollywood. Humble him immediately.

FoxLord

Do you hear him at the beginning of this?!? Mr Biederman, E1, get this dastardly conniving scoundrel

Daveed Kapoor

Great interview with Larry. Crazy no mention that his house burned down in January palisades fire. Much love to Larry

Clark

And looking back on it, it looks like Derek indicates with his hands that they had pitched to MR 4 times. What a crock of shit

BW

It’s to interview a guy who has had a long and influential career in comedy. Because this is a podcast, a format involving interviews and conversations on a topic. Hope this helps

Clark

I had heard something similar, sort of that it was a way to process/alleviate the fear response once the threat passes. Was that also a theory, or am I just remembering the theory you mentioned wrong, do you think?

Clark

Does anybody know the guy who Felix is talking about at 1:17:07?

M. Red

Admittedly not my field of study so I can't recall the name of the theory but yes you're right it was about processing/alleviation of fear response. I think that's why some of the funniest humor comes from things we find the most uncomfortable like the dead dad joke from Felix's mom.

Jeemar

if you want to enjoy a podcast that entertains the abundance dullards, check out doomscroll who has recently posted some massive hits: - a woman you can smell through youtube - francis fukuyama - academics that have spent a full decade getting mad at woke - a JD vance lookalike with a heart of gold

Horse Badorties

Uhhhhhh... "No Parasan"? Did nobody catch this?

John Lisowy

As someone who lost both of their parents I actually chuckled out loud from Felix’s mom’s joke. I think humor is, almost obviously, about joy and play. As such it’s a natural weapon against things like fear, loss, and discontent.

thicchatlogan

such a birdbrain comment lol, they spend a good portion of this one talking about how they're disappointed in certain entertainers' political stances but nevertheless find them funny

Mark Schneider

Laughed at Felix's pronunciation of fie-nite, fin-nite!! Will has trained himself out of his former Zsa Zsa Gabor pronunciation of raah-ther, kudos. (Love you guys, gotta love the glitches too.)

Daniel

now THAT'S how you do a cold open

Riley Stratton

but how do you know for SURE that cutting red tape will make buildings fall on people’s heads?

Mark Schneider

It probably helps. Then again, the Jerky Boys were very successful.

Casey

Felix’s whole Twitter name kinda mocks the concept of trying to beat these hypocrites by trapping them with their own logic. It’s pointless to play their game

Eli S

Will you guys quit promoting that idiot Josh mentum or whatever his name is? He’s a lib clown and you guys look like lib clowns when you promote him.

I was saying boo-lania

I am once again asking what happened to the grey wolf tax dodge tier?

k v

Absolutely fantastic interview. and very lovely that Larry Charles is such a considerate and political human being and willing to talk about all of these things. Bravo.

k v

They could always try to send out an abbundance of emails

Ty Baron

Probably would have been a better look to not go so hard on the intro. Less is more

JDF

MAO HAS ENTERED THE CHAT

thicchatlogan

generally I would agree but I don't think calling out their lack of professionalism is playing their game since it 1) bothers them more than just being told to fuck off, and 2) doesn't give them what they want, which is pretext to scold the left for being needlessly inflammatory and unserious

Adam Sullivan

Larry has a musician daughter, Pearl. The Magic Mirror album is a personal favorite of mine.

S.E. Nyarady

Fantastic interview, great guy I knew nothing about and very relieving to hear one of these old guard guys talk sense about Israel etc. But I do find it kind of disappointingly inescapable that Borat is invective against Muslims or at least Kazakhs; but undeniably funny & they explore that uneasiness in this interview so I get the nuance. The Dictator kinda sucked too, but I watched it with my Muslim roommate at the time and he LOVED it--but he also had very bad taste lol

Jon

Did Felix say “that Latin aggression” lol

Ty Baron

Ok fair enough

Eamon Short

Yeah I lol'd at his attempt to pronounce "latent"

Eamon Short

@58:15 there it is. As soon as he said that the person wouldn't accept his apology, I told myself 'if this doesn't end with the Curb theme music I'll cancel my Chapo Patreon'. Also, Bruno >> Borat IMHGO (the G is for Gay)

etienne

"we want to be taken seriously by the funny podcast without first taking it seriously enough to send a email"

Christian Aspen

Don’t defend yourselves against those abundance fools Chris. Their whole project is in bad faith so it’s pretty rich coming from them

Justin Kase

Reminds me of Richard Herring telling the comedian he was sharing a flat with at the Edinburgh Festival "Im glad your Dad is dead". When he returned to the flat after finding out his Dad was dead. And everything Jerry Sadowitz has ever done. Forbidden.

JJ Wroblewski

the kind of rhetoric that felix discusses at around 1:23:15, the "the region is so troubled and the conflict is so complex, what can we even really do but sit back and let it happen" type handwaving is an extremely prevalent tactic in genocide denial. it's a kind of interpretive denial that's incredibly troublesome because it gives an obligatory acknowledgment to the scale of violence, but recasts it as something other than genocide and thus removes the moral imperative to intervene. it also lends the genocide an air of proportionality and inevitability: that these conflicts are somehow ancient and unavoidable and that there's a back and forth between the two parties such that neither can truly be considered the victim. these rhetorical tactics are extremely reminiscent of those that were deployed as yugoslavia dissolved and the bosnian genocide was carried out. there were rampant ideas about how ancient and omnipresent and inscrutable balkan ethnic hatreds were and behind this veil atrocities like that of srebrenica were allowed to unfold with un dutch peacekeepers literally handing over 8000 civilians to be slaughtered. it's sickening that this same kind of rhetoric is being trafficked 3 decades later to try to absolve the same powers from their duty to intervene

DC

I watched Politically Incorrect as a kid, and then Real Time as a young adult during the Iraq War, and I gotta say that Maher's militant atheism has always been more directed against Islam than other religions. Even when he was against the Iraq War he would say things like "these people only understand violence," or talk about muslims as though they were stuck in the middle ages.

Chapo Bath House

Congrats to Felix, finally getting to talk to someone else about Red Fox

Ryan Gullage

Was that Herring joke for Stewart Lee, the Greatest Stand-up of all time (after most of the world has died)?

Ryan Gullage

I cannot wait for white people to finally be the minority in that country.

Justin Kase

No not Stewart Lee was trying to find the bit in his podcast where he talks about it, he had the guy on. I think the guy went to states and became a writer.

John S

Damn, that's a deep Rick Springfield cut.

The Master

You might want to check the Wikipedia page for the movie you’re talking about

bruce

You can really get a sense of where comedians are on Israel in Palestine from the fact that they will support it openly, but they will almost never make a joke about it. They know that they should be ashamed.

bruce

do you know who woke up every day and was capable of a little humor? refaat alareer

Jwood

Ayy, a good old duck hunt! It’s been years since a duck hunt! Well struck, Chris, well struck.
