An anecdote about an average voter: (in Austria) My sister wished for her birthday from friends and family that we donate to Gaza instead of buying her any gifts or throw a party. She is not interested in int. politics but a regular voter. Her news consumption is radio news on a music station, and every other day the regular evening news on state tv(of course extremely pro Israel) Before she announced her wish she talked to me and said: I can‘t have my son waking up at night (he is 5) asking why I cry watching the news. I teach horse riding to kids during the summer holidays, I can‘t look at the Syrian kids learning to ride at my place, eating ice cream after the lesson without crying. On the news they still defend and downplay these crimes. I can‘t take this. I don’t think she is the only one, or the only normie who thinks that way.

I think you guys are mistaken about how many of us regular folks on the left treat other regular folks who’ve recently changed their minds. Many people do exactly the “I told you so” extract a pound of flesh thing. I’ve had this conversation with my family and friends many times about how we need to avoid projecting all of the agency and guilt of politicians and media figures onto their supporters and listeners both current and former. In one of his "books", Cooper explains that Hitler really didn't want to exterminate the Eastern Slavs (despite dozens of Hitler and other Nazi speeches saying that was the explicit goal, Lebensraum for them), it was all a big "mistake," for once the Germans weren't well-organized, competent, etc. So they weren't actually culpable for the genocide!! the images of starvation are toohard to ignore because they recall holocaust imagery, I remember in school seeing photos of people from the concentration camps so ghastly thin I couldn't believe they were photographed standing and alive, and now we're seeing that IN REAL TIME and there is no fucking way you can justify starving children or pretend it's not a genocide anymore. I think images of blown-up heads are confusing and abstract to normal people. Also, they're more censored in the news than starvation images. An image of a starving person also gives you the sense that the specific person in the image can still be saved, while a person with a blown-up head can't be. We've all been hungry before and can imagine what it feels like to starve, but we've never straight up died. Starvation is torture and dying by starvation is worse than getting blown up instantly.
