Journalist and author Seth Harp returns to the pod to talk about his horrifying and expansive new book The Fort Bragg Cartel. We talk with Seth about America’s forever-war machine and the global drug empire it empowers, with a special focus on the case of Delta Force officer William Lavigne, who killed his best friend before turning up dead near Fort Bragg in a still-unsolved murder. We also discuss the rise of JSOC, the third Iraq War and its ongoing ramifications, the US military’s ties with the brutal Los Zetas cartel, and the eternal shadow war waged in the name of empire.

Buy Seth’s book here (and give it 5 stars on Amazon!): https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/730414/the-fort-bragg-cartel-by-seth-harp/

Felix begins speaking at 4 minutes and 44 seconds tonight

Anthrope Salmagundi

My ONLY criticism of the book is that there’s no mention of how the Call of Duty series has been used to propagandize to young white men and funnel more of them into the special forces by spectacularizing real life American “foreign policy” *cough* Soleimani *cough* actions as good-vs-evil world saving fights.

Dee Rubes

Debuckel? Little Carmine wrote this book?

43:35 Yet people still want to pretend the US is using Israel. Like the US is using the oil industry or the banking industry or the weapons industry. LOBBY groups use the US. The US doesn't have the will or capacity to do what China does. Imagine Elon Musk saying about Xi what he said about Trump while being in the country and on his personal platform. Imagine what would happen to him, let alone twitter. The USA is completely hollowed out and nearly every other country on earth is tethered to a rotting worm ridden corpse. It's delusional jingoism. Tbh idgaf about China, but they are a real country making laws on behalf of their own nation state's future. The US is not a real country, and the only reason these guys seem impressive is because they can sit and gather data on targets for months then murder them with impunity. Go do that shit in Russia or a functioning country like China and see what that does to the body count. Mafia didn't get killed that often either murdering random officials pestering them. Everyone is vulnerable when your enemy has satellites, helicopters, and minisubs and you don't know it's coming.

I can't buy this book in Australia, at least in ebook form. 😄 Clever of the US to try and stop its allies from understanding the full horror of the US Empire.

Call it the Bevins effect, when everyone interviews the same author. Seth just needs Trillbillies to complete the cycle.

I rode my bicycle 22 miles to pick this up. It’s really worth it! It was sold out in the city so I had to ride into the outer rims.

Great ep. Seth is a national treasure

Jonathan Rose

Fucking outstanding! Such a great ep. Thank you boys for bringing Seth front and center. And thank you, Seth, for the work that you’re doing.

hu4d

I've always thought that that was a little bit overblown as a concept. Like, the CoD games have been some of the most popular and highest selling video games for what, 20 years now? Yes they're obviously very successful as propaganda but the idea that they've significantly increased military recruitment, especially into special forces, doesn't really pass the smell test for me. It's like 1 standard deviation from saying video games cause violence

Isaac Andersen

For the third week in a row true anon and chapo cover the same topic and have the same take

people really want to put their heads in the sand about narco terror being state funded and state sanctioned. This country is three industries in a trench coat and its petrochemicals, weapons and end users for those weapons, and muthafuckin narcotics

Matty C

So many people I knew in the military that wanted to do “operator” shit were either relentlessly bullied growing up or were raised around hunting and shit. I agree that the CoD propaganda was always overspoken regarding special warfare. It WAS extremely effective at brainwashing the regular population into accepting it as valid though.

insta-classic book, incredibly insane tale

There’s still plenty of time left in the day. I better hear at least one new detail or that dog is gonna get it

I love that Felix can’t let steroids come up without bringing up that they’re actually very safe and fine.

Oliver Clozov

"when the black helicopter comes, everybody dies" set to marketing music was genuinely ghoulish

Doug Cartel

The most ironic thing about this drugged up soldier death cult operating in fort Bragg is that for all their self-worship over their combat skills, modern combat has proven that a couple nerds with Xbox controllers and a box of drones can hold off a whole division (But hey maybe this won't be true ten years from now who knows)

Doug Cartel

I remember this marine giving me this sarcastic recitation of his master's degree to highlight how ridiculous his study topic sounded and I replied with 'oh yeah, like NGO stuff' and he replied 'yeah that's exactly it' all surprised n shit This was like late 2015-early 2016 so I already had read about the role NGOs played in overthrowing the Ukrainian government at the end of 2013 Can't fool me motherfucker

Felix - Aaaaaactually...steroids are pretty ok.

LET ME DELETE MY ACCOUNT YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES

Felix needs another deep dive on fucking anything episode. Damn, make thats like a non scripted every 3 - 24 months recurring thing. But then make it shorter in between them so it like every 3 - 6 months, or whatever...(please dont break off and charge another $X a month. You and the related nitwits need to make a network. No one can pay these fucking 25 dollar same ashole every channel podcast shit. We dont need no bake bean fingered freaks in the podcasts

Evan Scott

I love when every podcast i listen to does the same interview lol

The tip line didn’t actually happen. It’s fake news. Are you still talking about the tip line? Texas is happening

Do we think CIA Pete helped to come up with the term ‘alleged Mexican white’ as he was helping with heroin logistics during his time at McKinsey…I mean serving our country.

I’ve spent time in South America doing anthropology stuff and I’m pretty convinced that the government is preoccupied with just controlling existing drug networks that they control and are only working to nullify start up organizations like fishermen or unaligned cartels. They also produce the fentanyl that is in the USA

Ant koz

I posted something similar when trueanon did “afghan heroin” episode… the thing that’s hard to figure in the heroin situation and actually points to some serious competence in whoever arranged the Afghan to America dope traffic line is the different ways dope is processed. Afghan heroin in Europe is almost always #3 where powdered Mexican dope in America is almost always processed one step further into #4, a salt. (Think crack vs powdered cocaine) This is why you see people “cooking” dope in movies, #3 afghan heroin has to be cooked with some type of citric acid to be injectable, it’s why most people in Europe smoke it off foil. #4 Mexican heroin is already processed that further step and can be mixed into water and injected without cooking. I’ve done powdered heroin in probably ten states around the Midwest/south/east coast and never had to cook it, always could mix it in a Gatorade cap or overturned soda can or the bucket of the needle, pull it through cotton and it’s ready… so my theory is that someone knew a flood of #3 afgan heroin in American markets would point to clear trafficking from a country we were occupying and that they were smart enough to either process it further in Afghanistan, or fly it to Mexico and process it there and traffic it in from Mexico further obfuscating where it was grown… it’s also worth stating that as someone who works in harm reduction currently I do not know of a single American market that has heroin on the street (powdered heroin that is. I think there is still some Mexican tar dope out west). As far as I can tell all heroin in America currently comes from boutique dark web shipments. The street now is entirely very powerful synthetic opiate analogs that are far more dangerous. They also lack the euphoria that came from heroin. It doesn’t even really feel good. It’s just super strong and doesn’t last long. If you have a habit, where heroin could last 8-12 hours before the onset of withdrawal, this stuff is 2-3. You basically do a dose, the first hour you are so fucked up you’re in danger and unconscious, and when you wake up you’re already starting to get sick. But, in my city, a vial of the shit costs $3, so you’re never far from your next dose. What a fucking nightmare. Every step of this “crisis” has been mismanaged. Terrance from trillbillies has done some of the best reporting if this subject interests you. But it’s just remarkable and a perfect stand in of how liberalism can only make things worse. Have an oxycontin overprescribing problem, but for a drug that is easy to dose and safer than street drugs? Make it illegal and cause a heroin epidemic that increases death… have a heroin problem? Eradicate it entirely from your streets and replace it with essentially poison that increases death and disease further… this is what profit incentives do inevitably in every area of our society… but yeah, I’m pretty sure the difference in how heroin is processed from America/mxico and Europe/Afghanistan helped whoever was responsible for the heroin pipeline hide where it was coming from.. if you read all this, thanks, sorry, it feels way long and way all over the place…

That movie goes so fucking hard. I like all of Wheatley’s shit, but god damn do I want him to get back into that tone and subject matter.. one of my favorites from any modern director

Michael

On the special forces being almost exclusively white, the late Glenn Ford who was executive editor with Black Agenda Report talked about how during the Vietnam War a good chunk of the elite units, specifically the air borne were majority black. Ford said during the war the black soldiers in these units started organizing for better treatment and around other issues and he said since the end of the Vietnam War the U.S. army has made sure that elite units are overwhelmingly white.

Biannual Beats

Immediately bought the (audio) book after the episode ended.

Gonna be a rough six months for the girlfriends in the demographic. Not as rough as for the ones in the book though.

[waving the open book around in the kitchen] "See babe this is what I was talking about at the art fair!"

Dick Warlock

Can't believe the episode art is not the cover of the Skipper Seal Make Your Bed book. Major oversight by Chris Wade imo!!!

Gubriel

Just speaking personally I feel like I was much more ambivalent about the US military when I played 200+ hours of every COD game. Despite growing up in a very anti war family I found myself wondering if going into the military was all that bad, and I'm glad I stopped

Ben Clarkson

I did the reading to prep for the episode. Highly recommend. Couldn't stop listening.

Chapo Bath House

Sounds like an internal DSA memo about members trying to steal POC valor

Relax Max

Seth said they tend to filter out complete psychopaths for Delta and JSOC operators. It wasn't followed up on so maybe this is a dumb question but why not? Having zero empathy sounds like it would be a benefit for your portfolio.

C. Andrew

Busting (jailing and executing war criminals) makes me feel good!

T

Great interview. Really captures how Shawn Ryan's entire oeuvre is an attempt to white wash the reputation of America's death squads.

Chapo Bath House

I guess you protect your investment somewhat if you screen out the guys who immediately want to kill their coworkers? Sounds like that doesn't always work

Justin Racine

My dad was once offered to join Delta Force in his service and said he would have taken it if not for caring about our family.... honestly given trainwreck evil that division was I am thankful he even in his centrist oaf-ness made the right decision .3.

An episode by Felix about whatever his current obsession is, released whenever the height of his current obsession happens to be. An interview with a fighter pilot. An interview with a zookeeper.

I will continue to vacillate between 'I would be scared having to fight JSOC guys because they are so evil and ruthless' and 'these guys are one day of withdrawal away from killing themselves and/or drooling on the floor'

Zachary J Rodell

Thank you Seth. Now im one of those guys that say, "I did not now know you could do drug in the military. But you gotta be like hella good".

Reminds me of the high ranking Nazis who were all addicted to methamphetamines and opiates.

Alright help me out what the song is plz

Agent Grange

I agree that there is something significant about JSOC being a predominantly white organization, and contributes to them acting as a gang of marauding werewolves. However. I have heard that this is partially due to the rigerous swimming qualifications. Don't shoot the messenger on this.

Agent Grange

Whenever we talk about these assassination squads able to operate with impunity I'm reminded how badly America needs to lose a direct conventional war as a part of our Century of Humiliation to dispose of this idea that a 6'5" high speed low drag operator with a decade of bastard-training doesn't die like everyone else when faced with a conscript with a stamped-steel high powered semi-automatic. It's like they have the same mentality as cavalrymen going into WW1 thinking they're the untouchable best of the best only to get mowed down by a maxim gun, killing the whole mystique overnight. It'll be the only way we lose the rampant fascist "operator aesthetic" that plagues this country where everyone thinks of themselves as a temporarily embarrassed Navy Seal in shitty Oakleys.

Steve D

This was incredibly illuminating.

C. Ries

Well I think even the more sober and analytical guys in that world would admit that their outfit is not designed to be a load bearing structure in large scale pitched battles, they need a lot of latitude, a long leash and expensive support to work effectively.

C. Ries

Kyle Samuel

Incredible urge to line dance at end of episode. Excited to pick up the book!

Agent Grange

You're absolutely right. However, this gets into the interesting problem where post-9/11 Rumsfield-ification means that our entire military is basically oriented around JSOC and providing the support needed for global special operations. Our military isn't made for near-peer pitched battles anymore, and I think it shows in the logistics and training we've provided Ukraine failing to have much of an effect. SSO and to an extent Azov paramilitary units really oriented themselves around trying to mirror American special forces with their raids into Russia-proper and it hasn't actually achieved much of anything for them strategically other than being costly expeditions that eat up resources and manpower while their counterparts in the infantry and mechanized units keep getting the shit kicked out of them whenever they try to do an actual breakthrough. Kursk was a perfect example of an operation that would have been a perfect raid, but fell apart when they tried to capitalize on the success of that raid into actual strategic gains. There's also something to be said about just how many of those Ukrainian tier one operators who would be lauded as the best of the best are dead now and replaced by a second or third or fourth wave of recruits, and what that is going to do to the politics of the country when this war is over.

Michael

Psychopaths don’t tend to be very intelligent. So that might be part of it.

Paul

Winston Salem mentioned 😝

eduard karpoev

Mostly good stuff. My only thing is Seth has talked about he thinks JSOC guys are in Ukraine or Gaza, but then doesn't think these "accidents" are cover for them dying in places like Ukraine or Palestine where it would be horrible for the US to admit they have guys involved on that level there when obviously they are. Like in Afghanistan or wherever they are just mostly killing random civilians or untrained people at night they are only gonna average 1 or 2 casualties a year. However, in actual real combat zone like Ukraine when the lowest level guy they would face is still a guy with a year in conscription & then combat experienced they are obviously gonna take more casualties.

XxX_ShingyDisciple_XxX

Waiting for that one guy w 5000 word comments to tell me how to feel about this 💅

I would think they're taking HGH in order to boost recovery time. Hard to believe they wouldn't if the idea has already been floated through official channels.

Not sure.. as an east coast user that never saw tar and only used the further processed heroin, I never had to cook. But I always thought it sounded like a pain in the ass having to cook up using citric acid, carrying the shit around.. all the times I fixed quick in a bathroom or car or on bathroom break at work, all that prep would have cost me jobs and secrecy. apparently most European using afghan dope agree as it’s much more common to smoke it in Europe. In America the further processed number 4 dope besides being easily injected is also much more soluble by the body when inhaled (sniffed) where the afghan #3 can be sniffed but is less soluble than the salt form… in reverse smoking the #4 salt is extremely wasteful as it burns way too fast. I guess to reiterate my overall point these differences helped them claim none of the heroin in America came from Afghanistan, but almost certainly they were just processing it further.. if I was an operator trafficking drugs, I’d have arranged a deal for Mexican cartels to further process Afghan #3 and sent it there. These cartels would have already had the means to process the dope, and already had the trafficking system in place to get it into the states. Getting large amounts of heroin into Mexico has to have been easier than getting it into the states, plus you’re then relying on the cartels to do the hard part of getting it into America and distributing to a network of dealers. It’s a dream scenario honestly. I bet there were operators forcing heroin production in the the hills of Afghanistan from behind the sights of their rifle, stealing the product, and shipping it to Mexico where the cartels had the means to do the difficult parts of trafficking, as well as providing cover for where the dope originated… there’s just no fucking way nothing in the states came from Afghanistan, having a heroin epidemic in your country while you’re occupying the country that produces over 90% of the world supply is no fucking coincidence, Impossible

C

Will is so good at his job, legitimately.

I always heard there was a lot of drugs coming out Fayettenam because “it was half way between Miami and NYC” which also never made sense.

I find it hard to believe that someone capable of the other rigorous requirements couldn’t put in the time and effort to learn to swim. Like as a population in general I believe there is a gap, but top-level athletes? Seems more like a convenient excuse for a racist.

Dee Rubes

100%. Making doggos evil is evil.

Dee Rubes

I think they are too unstable and disloyal so they would be a liability. That said, Ive heard multiple SF influencers say they are also selected for having few moral qualms, and this leads to them not trusting each other outside of combat. Because they are prone to basically stealing anything, including their buddy’s wife.

T

Felix is trying to create the Deltoid Force

United Eric Emirates

Had a friend who went into JSOC post 911 (age 30 no less) and saw all the shit in Iraq. He left after less than 10 yrs noting among other things that as a Jewish guy from NY he was increasingly feeling marginalized due to his status as a non white, non conservative Christian. And other men he worked with, blacks and Latinos, the same. The ‘True Belivers’ as he called them were taking over the officer ranks. Clearly the ‘whites only’ angle mentioned in this interview has become even more of a thing and would be interesting to get more insight how, as an increasingly criminal organization, its members can still square it all w ‘Christian values’. Maybe that’s where all the heroin comes in?

The McRaven mention caught me off guard. Admiral McRaven is famous for a speech he gave at the University of Texas commencement in 2014 which was in fact about making one's bed. I had to watch it more than a few times in communication courses at UT.

Ive got no where else to comment this so : I was listening to the legendary 1st chapo episode about the Bengazi movie, and Matt said something that blew my mind "the reason that bengazi failed at the box office... is that it ends on this note of loss and mourning and failure... Which makes it a truly fascist text, the fact that its so obsessed with failure and loss and weakness. But thats not what people wanna see" That was recorded almost 10 years ago. This blew my mind because I just finished watching Alex Garland's Warfare which had a much better reception, far better critical and viewer reviews, though it made way less money (16mil vs 8mil opening weekend). Warfare is 90 minutes of SEALS getting their shit rocked by Iraqis after a B&E gone wrong basically. DJ Shipley, famous SEAL influencer, acclaimed this movie and even forced his fuckin wife to watch it. His take was basically 'look how fucked up these wars made us'. In a big way, Warfare is bringing the war home. Very Apropo with Seth's book i think. All this to say : Warfare (2025) episode when?

K H

Either you did this as a bit with ai or you have shizoaffective bipolar. Nothing in between.

Sam

I agree with you in spirit. But the point is the United States doesn’t have to do this in China or Russia to be effective in its use of savagery and violence to maintain its empire. And I think there’s overwhelming evidence that JSOC has played a vital role in killing Russians in Ukraine. As well as clear support for Israel’s efforts in the targeted assassinations of Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iranian leadership and command structures. I wish it wasn’t the case, but I think the ugliness is the point…we don’t have to win a big war, we will just fucking annihilate your country and make life a living nightmare for everyone in it.

K H

I think it was telling the fact the guy boasting about it specifically said we will destroy your whole "village." That tells you a lot about who and where they are operating against. The myth of them being legendary gunman is bullshit. Al Jazeera did a piece paralleling this and they were simply killing political dissidents, though they operated under a mercenary flag.
