Chapo Senior Foreign Policy correspondent Derek Davison is back once again to talk about the escalating possibility of war in Venezuela. We discuss the recent strike on a Venezuelan boat by Trump and his newly-Christened Department of War, a botched raid into North Korea, our collapsing relationship with India, China’s SCO summit with Russia, and conflict on the Thai-Cambodia border. Plus: a Matt Christman prediction comes true…

Loving the early episode drops recently!

J.P. McD.

Is that guy who hates Derek gonna comment?

Erik Bourre

YOU JUST DID! 😉 (hell yeah)

king_von_diesel

No one's stopping you from living your truth, brother

Brent

Matt Christman predictions don’t “come true”. They are true from the instant of utterance. The rest of us simply require the passage of time to see with his same clarity.

Kevin Boyle

Is this a fabled Monday Pod Drop?

Nathan

Ok, I’m a midwit but what is Derek referring to happening in 1949?

king_von_diesel

The best of the dry boys speaks from the lathe of destiny

Waffle Poet

I think he meant 1947, both in reference to the Department of Defense being created and the Truman doctrine (international “anti-communist” intervention) being codified.

T

Chapo should really review the movie Enemy of the State if they haven’t already. I was a sigint marine of that era and the tech like stingrays was already quite advanced. I can imagine what the collections gear looks like these days. Makes the “standard training operation” in the movie a really salient thing to consider. https://linas.org/mirrors/cryptome.org/2001.11.13/nsa-ussid18.htm

The call is coming from inside the house. White American school teachers make the best drug dealers, as seen on television.

I love whacking my pud

NYCM&AHole

I would vote for that.

Except someone is filling in for slop delayed Wade so the episode is out before 2am Tuesday night/morning

Closing song? Sounds more Thai than Khmer but idk

There’s a fantastic quote at the end of Disco Elysium from the Deserter; he talks about how capital has to take off the mask of humanity to do the deed (I.e killing everyone you love). I thought of that when Will was talking about the Terminator. The bourgeois are not human.

12345

Will seemingly describing america as a Terminator shedding its skin without any apparent knowledge of American Prestige's cover art.

ZambianOnAmbien

There’s a show on Amazon with Taylor Kitsch Sheridan Kitsch called The Terminal List:DARK WOLF. The first 20 minutes will fuck you up

Antipaganda

Bit earlier, but he's referring to the hinge point of FDR's brain exploding, leaving the ravening jackals of the military-industrial complex to tear his dreams of a peace between the US and the Soviets into bloody shreds, their maws glistening with the blood of five million Korean civilians.

Antipaganda

Ah, you being in the field and all, why wouldn't they just use a drone to emplace a listening device instead of a bunch of guys? This seems like a flimsy cover story.

T

Yeah I wouldn’t be super worried about whatever cover story they’re releasing, but there are tradeoffs. People can plant things and hide them in ways that are more convincing. Harder to do with a drone. Plus it justifies their existence.

Felix begins speaking at 3 minutes and 59 seconds.

Declan Kennedy

at first I was a bit shocked at how little discussion of Trump and his old pal Jeffy there was in this episode, but in retrospect what else is there left to say? the president is a paedophile, everyone knows it, and nobody is going to do a fucking thing about it

Chapo Bath House

On the subject of landmines, j highly recommend looking up my boy Magawa. He was a giant African pouch rat and mine detecting expert. Pouch rats are smart enough to train, live a pretty long time, and are too small to set off a mine but large enough to keep track of in the field. He won a medal and he looks so cute wearing it! I can't speak to the legitimacy of the NGO behind the Hero Rat program (Apopo). They are Belgian, so there's probably something shady, but a cursory glance suggests they're somewhat more above board than average in this field.

John Lisowy

To me at least, I feel like the Taliban victory in Afghanistan has kinda galvanized the idea of insurgency of being an effective strategy after doing so for 20 years. Like no one but a handful of states could hope to stand up to overwhelming US firepower in a coordinated assault. But an ideological resistance group could hope to outlast them over years or even decades. And I think that’s something both the Venezuelan and Iranian gov’ts have come to terms with and a reality the US military and foreign affairs are aware of.

Andrew Cross

Felix first talks about fighter jets at 58:40, sukhoi-30MKI, dassault rafale

Agent Grange

The most frustrating thing about the name change "reversal" for the Department of War is that these idiots think it's like... A woke 1940s new deal culture war thing? When it was never even "changed" to begin with. Prior to 1945 the Department of War only included the Army, and the Department of the Navy operated separately. After WW2 the Pentagon looked back at all the queeny screaming matches that guys like Nimitz and MacArthur had with each other that caused embarrassing operational failures like the Phillipines and went "we should really get these two departments under one command structure that they both have to listen to." Thus we made the DoD, so the Army, Navy, and the newly formed Air Force would all play nice and not feel like they gave up "their" department by merging. Hegseth, despite being the SecDef, is apparently too fucking stupid and unqualified to know that. I know MAGA Navy guys who are genuinely mad about this because they feel like this is Navy cultural erasure.

glaourgbn

tell me what happened in 1949??

J.P. McD.

Yea exact same (see below for my comment). It’s so relatable because the source of his anger is that he got blocked by Derek’s podcast twitter account or something.

I do really love Derek. I appreciate how much he obviously appreciates Felix's humor and his laugh always gets me laughing too. Given the content of the eps he's always in, it's just always easier to hear when Derek delivers.

Are they also going to go after the drug smugglers working with the CIA?

The navy SEALs were actually trying to send copies of that Seth Rogan movie about killing Kim to freedom loving North Koreans

Mungo Franczak

It’s pretty funny that the NYT released the SEALs in North Korea story like a month after Seth’s book was released. Like now I know that there is a non zero chance those SEALs were high on opiates and overdosing on dextroamphetamines

Mugof Tea

Per the substack of Matthew Cole, who helped write the NYT story with Dave Philipps: [Matthew Cole] learned about the mission to North Korea in 2023 from a trusted and vetted source. The circumstances of the disclosure—one of the most highly classified military missions in a generation—required that I do what is nearly impossible for me: sit on it. To protect my source, I needed to pretend I had never heard the story and wait months before I started making other calls. Why? Contacting other potential sources who knew about the mission—an extremely limited group of people—could expose the source who provided the tip. Perhaps because I have experienced the consequences of moving too aggressively on a story that deserves public disclosure, I erred on the side of discretion and patience. [Matthew Cole] waited 8 months.

🤷🏼‍♀️

Felix at 14:05-14:20 is so correct. When I was in college, anytime someone found out about my dead parent they would say some shit like "Well it's admirable that you were able to move beyond that" as if the normal reaction to something shitty is to do some hollywood style murder suicide thing

Axel H.

What’s the song at 39 min?

Max

My theory is that Trump personally wants to have some kind war, just to fulfil MAGA, as in to show that the USA can win wars again under his great leadership. Not a huge conflict with a global power, just his little Blitzkrieg invasion of Poland situation, to flex power.

Alex Payne

Yess another Derek ep 🙌

these pictures make me want to cry. i wish magawa could’ve lived forever. sidenote is your pfp martin rev?

Chapo Bath House

He lived to a ripe old age, and got to live it up in retirement! It is. Every city has one bike messenger who is somehow the oldest man to ever live, and who gets his knees replaced instead of putting brakes on his track bike, and I think it rocks that Martin Rev dresses like him

grymm

Mike Johnson's was worse. Trump has everything to lose by telling the truth. Johnson just looks like a pathetic lapdog by making up such an obviously stupid story.

Nathan

They kinda already did that with Iran but yeah, I think we’ll see something like that with Venezuela. Probably just more bombings because I don’t think we have enough troops in the area for an invasion.

I’m one of those people who hesitates a bit to use “fascism” with Trump (because he doesn’t really believe in much of anything), but those ads are outright fascist. Made me pretty uncomfortable when I first heard one while in an uber. “Do I shake my head to show I disagree with this?”

It’s call Acrophobia by Penguin Villa. It actually plays at the end of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, whose director Apichatpong Weerasethakul is Thai so I assume that’s why they chose it (incredible movie by the way). Whoever is filling it for Chris has brought some great music to the trap.
