This week, we arrive at perhaps the greatest game ever made. To this day, no one has even tried to say so much about motherhood, the actual meaning of one's purpose in life, and how it's actually pretty cool to come of age when you're 29 seeing as it's still fairly young (even in 1964!) and you'll still have tons of time to become a truly awful person later on.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater  is a remarkable game for many reasons, but the thing that stuck out especially this go around was how different it was from the dull and crowd-pleasing prequels that are now overrepresented in nearly all forms of media. In 2004, you could still get so sick of your megahit IP that you could just fuck off and make a prequel that is focused mostly on a Brigette/Emanuel Macron type relationship that the IP's hero's dad was in 60 years ago. Nowadays, that would get you thrown in the clink.

Check your camo index. Top off your stamina bar. It's time to beat up your teacher/lover/battlefield mom's real son so badly that he falls in love with you forever.

Art by Josh Lynch. Theme song by Brendan James, inspired by the work of Tappi Iwase, Kazuki Muraoka and Norihiko Hibino.

4 hours is crazy

Jeremy Hinen

Just got to the Shagohod in Delta. I’m so ready for this.

Warbs

4 hours is insane. This is truly a labor of love. Hats off to you boys.

Cory Waring

Jesus, finally. I was so close to being THAT guy today. Anytime I see somebody say “where’s the episode?” It just pisses me right off and I almost became that man today. Snake Eater is my favorite of the franchise. My sons and I love the theme song and always let it play through so we could sing along. Brings a tear to my eye thinking about the ol’ days.

Brent

For fux sake, they made three!

Cory Waring

Oh fuck yeah, almost 4 hours! It’ll still be playing when i wake up to pee then I’ll give it a relisten tomorrow.

Jake V

Thank you Brendan and Felix, I’m closing and it’s a slow night

MKUItramega0K

Almost 4 hours long let's fucking goooooo

Pat Morrison

thank you fellas i love how it’s increasingly getting longer

Mugof Tea

Ah, yes... Delicious 🤤

Agent Grange

Always seemed like a tragedy to me that this game has been remade and rereleased several times at this point, but Ace Combat Zero (another sequal-thats-a-prequil that ended up being maybe the most iconic entry in the series) hasn't and likely never will. The two games always complimented each other to me even though MGS3 was released closer to AC5.

Jonathan Paige

Jupiter eating his son except it is the young Big Boss Snake eating the End’s parrot.

Bil

I’m so sick of this virgin nerd bullshit

mark kuchonowski

fuck man im still trying to get through metal gear solid on xbox one where the controls are completely fucked and the game is borderline unplayable cuz of the cloud or whatever, slow down!!!

ploob

Sit yor fat little ass down

Alez

Kept us waiting, huh?

Skullbrain

Hell yes. Unironically thrilled about the run time on this one

Ll

I literally started fist-pumping and scaring the GF when I saw the run time.

Sam Schneider

Going “hmmm…pretty tasty” in David Hayter voice has been one of my stims for like 20 years let’s go

D Metcalf

Solid is his best son because he inherited the autism

Big Problem

You guys have the opportunity to do the most baffling thing ever by skipping portable ops but covering Ac!d 1 + 2 for some reason lmao.

Big Problem

Also very proud of you not making the obvious comparison of Trump to Armstrong even though the bruise on his hand kind of has the same color Armstrong does when he turns his skin into a rock

Tim O'

📻 Snake, your first mission objective is to scare the hoes

Sybil-Shanks, the Prison Cat

I earned the Moss Camo in the original game, but executed The End in celebration before I could loot it.

Chris

Saying this into the mirror every morning

Kevin C

Interesting detail when snake loses his eye, its not the bullet that destroys his eye its the muzzle flash

Chapo Bath House

I'm also in the Chapo video game comment section bc I am drowning in bussy

JDF

Saturn but it’s not important. The run time of this ep is very important

Helixase

Felix calling me out; finished deep cleaning my computer room as this wraps up. He's in my walls.

Paul Hurdle

who else is waiting for delta to go on sale?

Paul Hurdle

you clicked on Snake’s face

Paul Hurdle

Ace Combat Zero put me in a zen state more than once EDIT: it was actually Shattered Skies i was thinking of

Paul Hurdle

edited my post, i got the wrong game

Paul Hurdle

i have not been able to get past very early in MGSV, MGS is supposed to be linear - it’s just too much for me

Agent Grange

Still hoping Felix will do a retrospective on the series like they're doing with Metal Gear solid.

GolfBaller

Re: The Fury, I'm just happy Kojima shoved some kosmonaut lore into the game. The Soviets won the space race, after all.

kev

I’m surprised the guys didn’t mention the similarities to Ninja Scroll

Andrew Cross

the YouTube channel EXP has recently gone over the weapons of MGS3 and its remake, and tried to decipher whatever the fuck Ocelot was doing with the Makarov

Mary Mallone

Every now and then, Felix will tell a really harrowing story about a past relationship/hookup that makes me think "brother, I know this is paywalled, but I wouldnt admit that to everyone who has 5 dollars kicking around every month"

Emil

The ocelot unit uniform is kinda real its just a black obr.69 with a balaclava

Hardcore Virgin

I am somewhat ashamed of myself for being such a psychotic nerd. But I must speak my truth (tho now as I write I doubt myself). goddamnit felix. Tossing isn’t light square tap but square tap plus directional pad.

Hardcore Virgin

You’ve clearly never had sez with me dawg

barry

THERES TOO MUCH DOODOO IN HIS PANTS 🗣🗣

Hardcore Virgin

Two questions and for the first I hear my inner Caldwell Gervais scolding me. 1. Can u still press r1 to look at cleavage 2. When prone in tall grass fpv can u now move your head?

Paul Hurdle

ill take $50, i wasn’t mad at how short Mafia: Old Country was bc it was only $50.

bruce

what a thrill…

Michael S. Judge

"Mister Khrushchev, if you ain't tetchin' yourself now, you better put some giddy-up on that tetchin', ’cause I'll be got-damned if I ain't about to bust for 3 straight hours like Paw's prize razorback, and when I bust, I bust enough to paint the first crosswalk in Russia" – Lyndon Johnson, 58 minutes after assuming the Presidency

Rohrkrepierer

I think from a gameplay and mechanics standpoints, MGSV is one of, if not the best stealth action game ever made.

Kojima Made Me Gay

Damn I still need to play mafia 2-3. Too many games 😭

Rio

Kept us waiting, huh?

Tvvvv

How do you not talk about Eva being a white lady that fucks dogs

Jesse Brukman

I think they're right that Snake Eater really is a bridge to modern gaming, specifically with the range of abilities. Sadly, trying to replay this ahead of the episode, the controls were just not ready for what this game needed. It's really hard to play with the almost universal modern control schemes imprinted in your head.

Tvvvv

I’m sure everybody here has seen the futurasound videos on the MGS series but if you want to go off the deep end with character and story breakdowns, it’s the best.

Jackson

3:47, zamn!!

FA

Fun detail about how gay raikov is they didnt mention: you get porno mags that you can place on the ground to distract the guards throughout the game and when they see it they drop everything and oogle over it. If you use this on raikov he briefly glances at it in disgust and keeps walking.

king_von_diesel

When I hit 2 hours of listening to this, I knew I had a problem. Im still gonna finish listening tho.

KIDBOOYA420

Really looking forward to the in depth analysis of the cooking mama series

drunk cig

I don't really get the point of this series. They don't seem like they've really even done all the research on the games. This is just a synopsis with some basic straightforward taken-as-is observations on top. What are they even adding to the conversation? This is just grist for the Chapo content mill, which is valid, but could have been so much better.

Jerimiah

Am I the only person who only played the original and Solid V? I am not a big stealth game guy but played V during COVID.

Logan McDaniel

Can’t wait for the episode on metal gear acid and ghost babel

Derek Fradenburgh

Volgun is so stupid his core trio of lackeys (The Boss, Ocelot, and Eva) are all double agents to one degree or another!

Ksizzle

My reading of early Ocelot is that his whole “these are our country-men you cant nuke them” and his accusations of tatyana being a KGB spy are all feigned. He’s loyal to the CIA by virtue of being loyal to the boss. He knew tatyana was a chinese spy because the Boss/CIA knew in setting this all up. So these Ocelot moments are him maintaining cover for himself and the CIA’s operation.

kiahl

The bit about the Boss's speech being essentially incoherent because she's trying to say something bigger than she can articulate reminded me of Chris talking about how Kamalla Harris had 1/100th of Dr Manhattans' powers and was trying to explain what she was seeing with her coconut speeches

SD

As a bi man wearing a thong, this podcast is reactionary gay erasure.

Kyle Palmer

Excuse me the Fury is Belorussian. It's on his helmet!

Ksizzle

You might fuck with the new remake snake eater delta. It has something of a MGSV control scheme, makes the game definitely easier but just play on a higher difficulty.

Big Dylan

I've never played the games and never will but have always been baffled and confused by all the content of it I see online so I guess it's for me

drunk cig

Well then let me blow your mind: Big Boss isn't real. He's a Meme created by the Patriots to mythologize war. MGS3 is a VR mission for Solid.

drunk cig

Probably. Maybe they'll get more into mindfucks when they talk about MGSV, but potentially everything in that game happens in the mind of Venom, who is also Cyborg Ninja Gray Fox

Kilo

If you put the Konami Code during the End fight it marks where he is on the map

Heddy

As someone who has only ever played MGSV, is MGS Delta: snake eater worth it?

They call me mista Patreon

It’s the same voice acting, sound effects and animations as 3. UE 5 graphics (so it looks more like the realistic graphics of V). The shooting is remapped to be more like modern games (but doesn’t really play that different) and the camo system is basically on a selection wheel instead of a menu on pause. It won’t play like mgs V or anything like that. But if you want the convenience of the visuals and some smoothed over controls for 89.99 it’s not the worst thing you could buy. The master collection is very bare bones. It takes the original games and upscales them, with no texture redos or anything updated control wise, but it’s the games that Felix and Brendan covered already (including metal gear and metal gear 2) and it’s a comparable price to delta

birdguy123457

I was on a drive from Kenosha Wisconsin to Dayton Ohio yesterday, I made a stop in Indianapolis and still had 10 minutes left

Christopher Small

One person's cringe is another one's deep insight. And as long as you find one person to connect to on it, then your dreams can live on, be they for a unified planet, or a big stupid robot dinosaur missile platform.

Michael S. Judge

oh damn, that British voice IS the other dog-show commentator with Fred Willard in BEST IN SHOW

Jon Lyons

"What, you think there's just a gay guy in EVERY country?" is a keeper.

Tvvvv

He’s not gray fox. He’s bb from the first metal gear

∅

just an incredible series, absolutely loving it so far. surprised you didn't mention the volgin thing with the frog. also i would pay 50 dollars for the unedited recordings

Paul Hurdle

3 becomes a slog but it is still a really good game in a lot of ways.

Alex Wilmes

Just got a copy of The Phantom Pain for PS3 so I can be all caught up in time for your episode on it.

Jackson

You will have an easier time adjusting to it in terms of controls than playing the original version for sure. It’s still fundamentally a very differently designed game but absolutely worth experiencing imo

Jackson

I do also ultimately think it’s meant to act as a bait and switch where we get endeared to how honorable her seems, to make the end reveal more surprising (despite it being kinda his whole thing). Although I like the idea it was genuine just in terms of character stuff and what it would suggest about how he changes by the time we reach modern day

Jackson

They’re talking through games they like and what they like about them. Simplest way is to go through them from the top to bottom. Idk, I like hearing it.

Jackson

Played the original a bit back and got into it eventually, but I’m playing the remake now and the quality of life upgrade from the updated controls is kinda ridiculous. It’s pretty much the only major change besides graphics but is really all the game needed to be modernized and I hope a ton more people get into it because of this

Jackson

I got it when it launched because I’m impatient and irresponsible with money. Have loved playing it, will absolutely be worth it for you with a discount

D Metcalf

Ocelot programmed the patriots to eventually make the war economy and senator Armstrong so he’d have a genuine Wild West to gunfight in

D Metcalf

“Master miller I picked this cabin for me and my huskies cause it’s where my mom and dad fucked

D Metcalf

The only official msg continuation I will accept is a dating sim starring solid trying to find his +1 for Meryl’s wedding

Stacy Newman

Ok I found parts 1 + 2 of Felix’s MGS 1 walkthrough, but is there no part 3?! Did he and Will really just rage quit the Cyborg Ninja fight and never come back???

Chapo Bath House

She was really spitting about Venn diagrams tho

Jesse DeStasio

Laughed out loud at the "Pete Buttegieg run" joke

KN

I'm the psychopath that has never played these games but loves to hear you guys talk about them. Keep up the good work!

brewdog

Same! Greetings, fellow sicko!

I am become reply guy

Big Boss didn’t get the Medal of Honor because he bit the heads off of too many parrots

Ksizzle

For your fight with the boss i had the oyama face paint and choco chip camo cause it provided the best camo I had for the area… really kneecapped the emotion in the post boss cut scenes 😓

Woke Batou

The most slop I've ever had thank you sirs 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Aizen

What game was Felix talking about near the end that was only made by one guy

That final fight with The Boss will always be in my memory as one of the best of all time. The music that kicks in at five minutes after all the silence is immaculate sound design.

kiran

I sewed an entire pair of pants to this

D Metcalf

I mayor Peted it up in the sewers on my delta playthrough

J.P. McD.

Please make these shorter

Michael S. Judge

I will show you penis such as you have never seen before! Come, come into my Cadillac El Dorado with 3 different hubcaps! My friend Chainsaw pays me rent for the back seat!

Jacob

Those hoverboards were actually real, but they were American not Russian. It was called the Hiller VZ-1 Pawnee. They were never widely adopted though because the US military found them impractical. After I found that out I assumed every piece of technology in MGS was based on something real, so I spent a day trying to find out if someone really invented a holographic iPad in the 80s. Alas they did not.

Michael S. Judge

I gotta say, even as a decided ungamer who's listening so I finally know the goddamn plot, the sound mixing on even the little "atmosphere" clips is pretty great – the "Don't underestimate him, they call him 'The Father of Modern Sniping' etc." clip actually fooled me into pausing & looking around, because a couple of the animal sounds seemed way too immediate and broad on the left/right stereo spectrum to be coming from my laptop. Whoever mixed that did something kinda genius: the sounds themselves are in normal stereo placement, but there are VERY quiet, VERY fast echoes of several sounds mixed at the furthest left/right extremes, which fucks up your sense of where they're coming from, and it also fucks you up differently *at different positions* – from center (sitting directly in front of the latop), it sounds too far right to be a laptop sound; you move to the right, and the sound that appears to be 100% right or "R100" begins to "move" left in exact proportion to how far you've moved right, because you can hear better and better that the actual noise at R100 is a slight echo, not the original signal, so when you move to R100 or past it (i.e. the furthest-right laptop speaker), the noise now seems to be dead center!, and as you move back to the left, the noise apparently goes right again, till you're dead center and it's back at "R100" (but it isn't). That's a really sophisticated recreation of real-world acoustics, and how much of basic human orientation, "Here I am, here's what's around me, here's any gravity or inertia I'm fighting to stay in the same spot," SEEMS to come from vision, touch, proprioception of things like muscle tension or load on joints/ligaments/tendons, but is actually sound. And anybody who can reproduce those phenomena with just the L100 - center - R100 stereo spectrum, no forward or behind, no over or under, is pretty brilliant, which is an impressive level of detail AND of freedom for somebody like the sound mixer in a project like a video game, where millions of people have semi-consciously experienced it, but I don't know if anyone has gotten technically fixated on those exact 3 seconds of animal sound.

Cy Parker

What was the name of the game Felix was talking about, where it was made by one person except for the voice acting which was done by the developer's friends?

Maximilian Maksutovic

Absolute masterclass, I'm loving this series so much I hope you both continue doing this 🙏 -- has anyone tried Delta and if it's worthwhile to do a play through on?

Jeremy Hinen

I’m at the end of my first run and I’ve really loved it so far — hadn’t played the original since high school and it more or less matches up with how I remember it playing + some quality of life upgrades

Kilo

Wait. They don't talk about Guy Savage at all???

Ana

The N-Gage game Metal Gear Mobile is technically canon (taking place between MGS1 and MGS2) and it's SHAMEFUL we didn't get an episode about it! I mean, Konami spent HUNDREDS of dollars making that game!

Alexander

No, Spyro the Dragon, you dickhead.

Jackson Mundie

I wanna hear their thoughts on delta. Personally I think it’s phenomenal.

kiran

make these longer so i can sew more pants while i listen

Bygone Djinn

The Fear sounds exactly like brace doing coindexter

True Horror Productions

Seconded would love to know what game is being referred to here, hate to be that guy but damn lol

Donald Barrett

At 2:27:57 holy crap they did that on the original MSX Metal Gear. Snake gets captured and there's a tracker planted on him you find in your inventory labelled "TRANSMITTER." Every area transition will spawn an alert until you remove it.

James Wallace

Such delicious slop. Laugh! And grow fat!

Fredy Garcia

A Snake is in a cell guarded by a Johnny. (time is a flat circle)

Matt Ponikvar

"You have to understand the future better!!!"

Eric

“you finally cleaning all the dust in your gaming room” I feel seen

Baby J

Why would you skip the fight with The End? I thought that was such an exhilarating and frustrating boss fight as a kid.

Valentino

I want to talk to Felix about Warhammer 40K over a soda

Hainish

What is the game Felix references at the end developed by one person?

Tyler

What’s the one-man game that Felix is referring to at the end?

brobrah

Strips Raikov "I'm a whole different game from Solidus!" *puts on his face*

Tom

I've never played the games, but I enjoy both the hosts. I went on a 60km bike ride and was surprised when I go home that I still had 20 MINUTES left of this podcast, maybe I'll pick up the game lol

Corey

Raikov as the token mean abusive, gay commander is basically a carbon copy of general Blue from dragon Ball

James Browning

This episode is the thing of legend. Instant legendary status. The part about Raiden all those parts ha ha! Killed me! Well done boys! 3 hours + of comedic MGS gold

Kevin

The Cobra Unit always reminded me of Ninja Scroll - with Jubei fighting each villain one after another and they all have a “thing”. There’s even a bee guy!

Ethan Schulz

I could perfectly see you guys in my minds eye at the end of the episode, pressing R1 with my thoughts. (I know Felix looks like Judd Hirsch but I don’t know what the other guy looked like so I just imagined the JD Vance meme face)

huff

he says "the missing link between infantry and artillery" is a "metal gear..." is because a gear is something that sits between things, linking them together. it IS really stupid, but that's what granin is literally saying.

Kieran Mielek

Do you think Snake and Ocelet ever went bareback?

R

It's canon that Kaz and Big Boss did, on the beach, in a box.

Kevin C

They even both have assholes covered in bees

MeowMita

I feel like the Boss's speech makes a more sense given it's a nostalgia for childhood considering that she's the daughter of a patriot. She herself is sort of downwardly mobile given that she didn't inherit the spot on the philosopher that her father had before he was killed.

MKUItramega0K

These episodes all have the same replay value as the games do

tttt

Amazing episode fellas, I didn’t realize how important mgs was for my childhood I somehow remember so many of these cutscenes and boss fights and Easter eggs even though I haven’t played this game in 15+ years

Return of The Mac 2nite

Philosophers Legacy is some National Treasure ahh silliness. Why/how is the PRC party to it when it would not come into existence until well after WW2? China was in complete turmoil after WW1. It’s ridiculous to propose that the USSR would conspire with the US or vice versa during or after the Soviets leaked the plans to break up the Ottoman territories.

Return of The Mac 2nite

The Boss says Russia and America will be friends in the 21st century and that’s about all you need to know about how smart the Boss is and how politically savvy Kojima is.

江戸 ねビル

Lol what are you even here for, go watch some YouTube essay? This is for dudes reminiscing over mgs, easiest way to do that is going through the whole synopsis and talk about stuff when it comes up

江戸 ねビル

This series is fantastic. I haven't played mgs in many years and just hearing all this brings back so many memories of some of the most important experiences in my life

drunk cig

Insightful. Go get some friends to reminisce with, and try to imagine how things could be better, instead of settling for the bare minimum. I don't have a parasocial attachment to these guys, so I wanted something more than a synopsis. MGS is a series with one of the most passionate fanbases around. They owed it to the nerds to give a little more.

Tabitha

i dont think the boss' flawed ideology really reflects on any of the writer's or their own politics, atleast not any more than old ocelot or big boss' interpretations of it. The game seems to pretty clearly show that the boss' ideals in the end were inconsistent, and that her ideology made her easy to manipulate and lead to her death in the end. The game was made and written in the 2000s, russia and the us have never been friends and that time did not instill that belief in many people, the future of the series also shows that the boss was completely wrong in the end. I think you might just be misinterpreting the message of this game.

Return of The Mac 2nite

I’m not yet convinced Kojima sees Boss’ ideology as flawed. Corrupted by would-be successors, not inherently so. From the self-diagnosed “apolitical” liberal standpoint it’s not incomprehensible as an ethos, arguably it appeals to this mindset. Boss was a conscious martyr, she knew she was signing her death warrant, and with martyr narratives the martyr is right it is the limitations and flaws of others that have resulted in said martyrdom or their idealistic cause failing to launch. Kojima was trying and failing to call balls and strikes, referencing relations contemporary to the time of Snake Eaters original release like SORT, like RF support for the US invasion of Afghanistan, etc.

Mungo Franczak

IM STIIIIIILLLLLL IN A DREEEEAAAAAAMMMMM SNAKE EAAAATERRERRR

OleKyShark

About those hoverboards. It was a reference to Johny Quest

Andy Kraushaar

Same. I played the old Metal Gear games but never played the MGS series. I did watch my roommate play them years ago because I found them fascinating to watch. I actually like to watch the full game videos with the cutscenes and no commentary on YouTube. Snake Eater is my favorite. I'm currently going through the video for Delta and having a blast.

Dinosaur

My favorite part of the sorrow segment is about 3/4 of the way down the river, there's a point where the river is completely full of dead fish that are just screaming "YOU ATE US YOU ATE US!" and Sorrow comments about how many animals you've killed.

icarus

Dude I know it’s been a year but I've been trying to find this bit forever, any leads on which ep it might be will save me from going insane

Oh man, I feel like it was one of the eps with Seeking Derangements cause I think it was said in response to Jaques
