I know video essayists have been running a long term public brainwashing campaign with works such as "Metal Gear Solid 4 Is The Most Brilliant Middle Finger In The History Of Gaming," but we are impervious. As the series shows, people with pure hearts and strong minds can resist any and all psychic programming. Make no mistake: this is easily the worst mainline entry in the series. Depressingly, it marks the first (and perhaps only) time an entry in the "Solid" series fell victim to the worst design practices of its era rather than setting a new creative standard.

Drebin breaks primate law by keeping a monkey as a pet, and it's not even the worst thing about his character. Dr Naomi Hunter drags the plot down so much that it actually calls Frank Jaeger/Grey Fox's legacy into question. I'm not saying he should have just sliced her head off back in Mozambique, but he'd definitely feel ashamed about how her amazing plan to save the world involved having sex with a Romanian man whose job can best be described as Woman Murderer. Weapons that correspond with player progression are gone, replaced by the repulsive Drebin and his disgusting store. Perhaps worst of all is the Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer maps that make up all but two of the game's five levels (one of those two is just Shadow Moses).

This game has so many problems, none of which are aided by the PlayStation 3's bizarre technological shortcomings, or the fact that an exhausted Kojima only took the lead on this thing because NeoGAF moderators threatened to come to Japan "to teach English" if he did not. But through it all, Guns of the Patriots somehow manages to give Solid Snake the send off he so richly deserved. At the end of the day, this is not a very good Metal Gear game. But that does not make it bad, or even mediocre. And you know what? it's still better than any Splinter Cell released after 2006.

Take your nanomachine shot, get yourself a repulsive egg dish prepared by an orphan who lives on an airplane, and remember not to have heroes, because they'll only get microwaved. We're going to see how much war has changed since high school, and maybe, if war has heard of our highly niche but highly acclaimed comedy politics podcast that takes a kaleidoscope view of the news.

hell yes perfect thing to listen to at the office

Tyler

Let’s go!

Mac

Almost 4 hours, too short

james fleming

This is the one I was most excited to hear felix talk about

Waffle Poet

I love these early drops. Perfect way to relax after 12 hour nights in the yard. Everyone should check out Steak Bentley’s MGS 4 masterpiece on YouTube, too. Feel like a lot of folks here are probably familiar.

Jeremy Hinen

4 was the first entry I played through (watched my older cousin play the first three) and I’ve always looked back fondly on it despite the shortcomings.

Zack Burke

The only thing that was "Kojima seeing the future" in MGS4 were that the PMC ads in it are what military ads are today, and Drebin's weapons unlocking foresaw "pay to win" and microtransactions in modern gaming. MGS4 may be Kojima's only bad game.

Karl

If I haven't played the game yet, is it worth skipping this episode until I do?

Addabad

I've got too many cakes to listen to...

Buried Ledes

Listen, MGS4 has its shortcomings (a deeply disjointed and at times silly storyline, some clunky gameplay, etc.), but Hayter’s inclusion alone makes it a better game than MGS5.

James Wallace

I still love this beautiful mess

Boxcar Neil

The downside is now you're making me remember just how frustrating of an experience this fucking game is.

Yairo Martis

Thanks God. My brain was draining away. (At work)

K Birkenbach

I recently borrowed my friends old PS3 to finally play this game. It was a great experience even if it is an incredibly uneven game. Subbed to the patreon for this Metal Gear series. Great work guys

MKUItramega0K

Wipe this meme from the face of the earth

Chris

I can't find this one in the PS5 store. All the rest are there, but no 4? Can someone help? Thanks in advance...

calvin kilby

i enjoyed this game despite it being about 80% cutscenes and 20% elder abuse

Gale [Formerly GDW] ♀

Shame there was no accessible way to play this before the episode. Apparently it's too wonky and specifically optimized for PS3 to port. Plus the lukewarm reception probably wouldn't sufficiently line Konami's pockets.

Stephen Kay

Did Delta not do well enough for them to try and capitalize on the limited access to this game?

Richard Cochnar

Maybe I’m a sicko, but this is my fave of the series. I have a high tolerance for anime bullshit.

Nick

It’s stuck on the PS3 for now. Will likely release with MGS Master Collection Vol. 2, whenever that releases. Emulation is the cheapest way to play, but I hear PS3 emulation is shitty.

David Levy

It's not on PS5 or PS4. You either need a PS3 or a computer with a really high end CPU that can emulate it using RPCS3 (it doesn't work great with the emulator but it is playable). Either way you will still need to track down a copy of the original disc too.

Paul Hurdle

the first entry for which you have to have a two decade old console to play right now. (pc/emulation nerds need not bother responding to this basic console gamer)

huttese bebop

unfortunately it was only on PS3 and never ported.

Jonathan Wolff

I have trouble ranking them against one another but I similarly love this game. I only played it once though, all the way through with a friend that had a PS3. Dying for a re-release on a console I own.

bruce

it’s inappropriate time in american history to review a divisive game - aren’t we polarized enough?

Jack Barker

I’m not getting this podcast on my feed, anyone else having the same issue?

Mr Worldwide

You had 13 female listeners now you’re going to have 6

No1BASICCHANNELFAN

this series rules! I can’t wait for 5! I can’t wait for peacewalker!! Make them twice as long and never do news/politics again!!!!🤩

David Sami

yall too fast I haven’t finished snake eater! 🎮

Bil

Here to register my disappointment

professional loaf of bread

I spent an hour trying to get my emulator to work for this game because you guys convinced me to play along. Thanks for nothing

Chris McCarthy

I fuckin LOVE this kind of bad game! I've re-played it like 6 times, and will never quit it. That said, almost every negative issue levied at it is completely true!

Chris McCarthy

I'm with you fellow sicko, it's not my favorite, but I love it with all my heart lol

Jonathan Wolff

MGS5 just feels like a game, MGS4 at least feels like a part of the series

Ryan

I also subbed because of the mgs content 😭. I have been enjoying the bonus episodes as well but mgs is one of my favorite series and the first episode was so good I couldn't wait for 3-5

Harrison B

Did they highlight if they’ll be doing other video game series after MSG?

Throw Away

Liquid would have given Iran a nuke

Richard Cochnar

When snake and ocelot stab each other with the JUICE so they can keep fighting. Man. I’m not made of stone.

Woke Batou

Snake vs the Professional Managerial Class

Dave K

As a young person i loved this game, it was all so dumb, and thats what i loved about it. As an adult i love this game, because its a game about being annoyed by your fandom. A game about how the very nature of creating a popular series can stifle a creative. Its a game about being stuck in a rut. Its very captivating that way.

Donald Barrett

It plays incredibly well. It's one of the best-playing MGS games. It's also got the most infuriating plot out of all of them because it puts a capstone on any future new, non-remake games involving Solid Snake without fully retconning this game's plot out of existence.

Kas

>borderline schmaltzy Borderline? This is the most self indulgent and soy work I’ve ever seen. It makes the MCU look bleak and brechtian

Justin Racine

Still thought 4 was a good movie even if it was not much of a game. Though my first entry I got to play was 4 when I was young so I have soft spot for it.

They call me mista Patreon

It’s funny to me that mgs 4 and gta 4 come out in the same year. (I hope Felix covers the GTA games someday) Both games are follow ups to immediate classics from 2004. Both games have the ps3 grey/brown sheen to them (tho I actually like how both of them look, especially compared to other games in this era). Both upgrade the actual gameplay in the same way, but suffer from boring mission structure. Both have an annoying guy with a stupid accent. Both of them have a sequel that used the Roman numeral V. Both sequels are considerably more playable, but maybe slightly less interesting because they have less friction. Maybe mgs 4 should have let old snake drunk drive. P.S I’m assuming Brendan won’t read the comments, but I just want him to know that he is incorrect on his take on Resident Evil, because the real RE 5 is dead space 1 and RE 6 is Dead Space 2. Welder bf/nurse gf are the scariest combo

Mountain Dew Or Crab Juice

You have the choice of helping(slightly) the rebels and not helping them, thus remaining neutral; and as we all know, remaining neutral is siding with the oppressors.

Tristan Cannon

Sorry for being annoying, but I don't see this episode on the apple podcast app.

drunk cig

Solid does know The Boss because MGS3 was a VR mission for him. These games are called Metal Gear SOLID. We view everything through his eyes. He's the center around which this world operates. He's the ubermensch, the perfect soldier created to carry out the mission the AI's gave him. Big Boss is to him what Solid is to us, a legend, a meme. A huge unspoken aspect of the games is that history is fiction. Everything outside of Solid might as well just be a story. Big Boss does seem to be real, but who is he really? La Li Lu Le Lo.

drunk cig

Agree. His pet monkey is awesome too. I believe the point of him having only weapons you don't really want is that the War, the Economy, is coercing you to play, to live, the way it wants. The boys didn't do enough research for this series.

professional loaf of bread

I love the bleached hair, the soda, the cool monkey who’s more of a friend than a pet. They hate on his catchphrase but as a person who’s first kojima game was death stranding I love the kookie shit that the characters do, eye have you is his brand, it comes off at first a bit threatening but you learn it’s just him having your back

GETTODACHOPPAH

Love this series the perfect stupid thing to make me not think about anything else

Yairo Martis

I fucking cracked up at the Vito Jr. bit. I'm at work, goddamnit! 😅

B-Man Vroom

Are you going to add this playlist to Spotify? Also i'm still not seeing it added to Youtube Music for me.

Yairo Martis

The first time I beat this game in 2008, I literally, actually pissed myself. I decided to power through a full bladder during the ending, and by the time the game was finally ending, there was someone taking a shower in the bathroom, and I had to rush outside to piss in the yard, but I was too late, I was already pissing myself by the time I managed to whip it out.

Big Problem

I’m surprised you guys didn’t mention the worst part of MGS4, that if you wanted to play this game on release, you’d have to shell out up to 600 pre-brandonflation bucks right on the heels of the Great Recession for a console that lost GTA and Final Fantasy as console exclusives. What are you looking forward to after beating the bad MGS and Uncharted? Fucking Haze?

Michael Austin

having hayter himself as himself in this game then ditching him is crazy. I think Sutherland killed as big boss/venom snake but I would have killed myself if kojima did that to me

Ryan O. Smith

I specifically remember a promo with kojima where he said both: every npc will have a unique model, and that the facial expressions on guards will be so good that you can tell if they are alerted/cautious etc just by their look lol

Hardcore Virgin

Edit to add: I’m 28 seconds into the pod and Felix’s complaint is Drebin isn’t selling him stuff that can be silenced. Maybe Kojima’s message was to be a LOUD BROTHA on your way out. kill everyone. You’re a walking bioweapon. Plague Snake. OLD COMMENT BELOW. Granted. I’ve never finished the game. And am just replaying it now on my old ps3. Currently, I’m tracking Naomi thru the mountains of South America. And I’ve been playing thru the games post finishing ds2. (His most disappointing imo) I gotta say. I’ve really enjoyed 4 so far. It could be how I’m playing? Which is. I engage to kill and I am in full on war mode. It is a blast. Yes the aiming kinda sucks but once you realize if you have a gun equipped you should be looking down the sights at all times. And Snake kinda controls like a tank or a twin stick shooter. I don’t know. Call me gay. But I like drebin. I like the monkey. And the game still looks fucking beautiful. It loads fast. The ps3 seems kinda like a rocking machine. Still going strong after what? I got it in 2008? Granted I still have the Nintendo I had as a kid and that still works. I dunno. Gonna listen. But u guys should be ashamed of yourselves. 17:24 minutes in. Yeah I just categorically disagree. If you actually fight the battles…like the push into the mansion to get to Naomi. Was thrilling. Again. I was just piling up bodies. So much so I got liquid in my head saying I just love the killing which makes snake vomit. But whenever the rebels saw me I’d get little hearts and congrats. They loved me. 20:19 I’m a nerd kill me. But watch dogs was a ps4 release. 2014? The AI leap—I think maybe started with fear or was it halo 2–when programmers and designers started using a kind of pattern called behavior trees. Again. This is just to Kojima’s cred for all games in the series. The AI never really glitches out ever. They may be stupid but they do their stupid shit well. (The AI takes a step back in DS1. But that’s not the point. DS2 I was so frustrated with the story I didn’t care about the noticeable improvement to combat. ) 1:32:54 Felix gets the sequence of the mission debriefs wrong. Also to add bc I just installed this on a ps3 yesterday. The install time was maybe a minute or two? The game loads and plays incredibly fast. Rat Patrol Frog rush does kinda suck. But i like that u can friendly fire. And when the frogs hop up on the wall shooting them down is fun. Playing the OG snake eater and this back to back…why is the boss’ confused whole world ideology excused but this game and its villain is incoherent? Is it I think Kojima is just a bad writer? Because the games all sound like him…I mean Brendan’s suggestion for the villain (making the bad for 4 solidus) is preferred. He’s actually giving good notes here. But the way Felix praises or critiques these games is really Spectrumy. Like in the mgs2 when he keeps talking about how “that’s how an AI would’ve recreated shadow Moses” that …reading….is entirely dependent on the way we think about generative AI. No one and not even Kojima was thinking about generative AI at the time. The AI system in the game is about info control. Not info generation. But whatever. You wanna do Boss Runs and Pretend the End is real and get sentimental about his parrot. No one is reading this. No one cares. I do love that you boys are doing this. And i don’t mind these superficial and mistake ridden retellings. When it is about con inc it is frustrating. When listening to Felix gripe about kicking Sunny off the gay dad airship, it is adorable. Child Free for life. I’m very excited to play 5 again. I don’t know how to get peacewalker. I’ve never played that.

Chapo Bath House

The nuns in China who take care of Xing Xing the one handed monkey are nice, because she is not a pet, she is their friend

Hardcore Virgin

Maybe I am too. I find the world enthralling. And again. I love the way it feels to DOME ppl in it. The gameplay. Once u get used to the aiming. Actually fucking rules.

Bill Vog

do people use the Patreon app to actually listen to pods? I don't see this ep in my feed yet

Colin S

Drebin seemed way cooler when people were smoking spice and using thinkgeek as a homepage

Michael Rosen

Can never forgive this game for near feature-length cutscenes

TLT

I love mgs4 for what it is but it surely is a weird entry

Hardcore Virgin

I guess I agree. And it is crazy for Felix to say that after three. Which is pure schmaltz. But it is hard to recognize it when you’re jacking off hard and really cool

Matthew Rogers

I always felt so bad when no would appreciate Sunny's eggs lmao

Maii Degeese

Probably had my most favorite ending of a video game series. I also liked how you could play guerrilla and help the rebel factions in the MidEast and South America segments. I’ve only played it a couple of times years ago so it’s probably aged badly for all I know.

A

1 hour mark - “ok this is our first proper gameplay sequence”

Tvvvv

I love liquid ocelot in this game. He’s so heightened. Full gay villain.

Ana

Are you by chance related to Hal Emmerich?

Yairo Martis

Lol, I must be. I never even made the connection😅

Chris

That's a bummer. But thanks for the info!

D Metcalf

Lil' Gray is the true successor to Big Boss

Tvvvv

This is the most passive aggressive game. The team and Kojima were like fuck the fans, here’s all the bullshit you said you wanted. And fuck Konami, here’s the game you wanted.

Brent

“Have a sick Ramadan!”

Kevin C

No the arm thing is so much stupider,Ocelot appears to have originally used liquids arm in 2 which is why he gets randomly possessed, so in between 2 and 4 he gets a bionic replacement and hypnotizes himself into thinking hes liquid so he can access the Patriot AIs and not have liquids stupid ghost keep fucking up his plans

Woke Batou

*Sanders voice* we need the Patriots and their incredible Medicare for All scheme

Agent Grange

Just to bring it back to Ace Combat, because I find myself doing that on every one of these episodes, Felix's observation about the Japanese game developer response to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is perfectly demonstrated in the hard pivot from the underrated Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation to the absolute mess that was Assault Horizon.

Zach G

Finally the best game in the series!

Steven Medge

Apparently I'm the only person in the world that loves mgs4

Pizza_Poss

Finally the only mgs game I’ve ever played and finised in two marathon session lol

krumping4

really brings me back to 9th grade study hall

SF

Yeah the “tomokazu fukushima was the real genius” stuff stinks of total internet-brain bullshit to me. Felix’s Goldman Sachs analogy is extremely on point.

D Metcalf

I played this game from the balcony of my college apartment as I chain smoked during the cutscenes

Everett

The only Metal Gear game I ever played was The Phantom Pain and I absolutely loved the stealth gameplay and had no clue what the hell it was about. I tried watching playthroughs of the older games to get an understanding but every time I got to MSG4 I either fell asleep or gave up on trying to understand any of it. Im glad I have these now to kinda sorta give me a better understanding of the story.

Nocturnal Emission

You mean selling stuff that is useful i.e. chaff grenades

Christopher Small

Rosemary roleplayed with the Colonel Campbell Character.AI until she fell in love with it for real The original Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a TV show from the 60s, so I think it's just shorthand for anything where action hero's/spies are a couple. Somewhere out there's a version of SpyXFamily where they're all Metal Gear characters

Paul Hurdle

the trope of capturing your enemy and making him an experiment that Felix mentions around 1:56 is my nagging issue with the current Ultimate Wolverine series.

Hardcore Virgin

Well. I was responding to the actual words being said. But in that sense—useful to classic Sneaking. I get it. U buy a metal gear game. U wanna sneak around. U don’t wanna play in a Michael Bay movie. I was just enjoying the crap out of the game playing it war mode.

Matt knutel

(codec noise) "Raiden, it's been long enough, I'm taking your bm to red lobster"

crunk

I love Kojima’s wild requests and ambition for game development. For his upcoming horror game, OD, he said “ I want to scan a ghost for the first time and I want to get an award for that”

Panic Surfer

MGS is less a commentary on the *real world* and more of a meta commentary on video games. MGS4 is just “let’s drop this out of style dinosaur into a call of duty map” It’s always struck me as a joke more than anything else.

I hope it was intentional. I can never tell how much of these games' thematic value is by design and how much is determined by the community collectively analyzing them.

Michael Austin

the whole EVA throwing herself on the pure thing would have worked so much better when the ending didn't have big boss revealing that he's still alive. the real life story of snake and big boss' voice actors being a real son and father is incredibly touching but the end where snake blows his brains out makes so much more sense with the recovering of big boss' body

crunk

Quite the opposite m. If anyone can scan a ghost into a video game, it’s him

Jesse Brukman

I generally agree here, but everything goofy they're mad at with MGS4 you could easily say about 3, the first part of which is literally running back the same three extremely limited screens in between an hour of cut scenes lol

Scum

I also hate this game, conceptually, even though I like it overall, but I think they missed plot beats because their good will was sapped to the point of disinterest, so it makes it difficult to take some of the criticism in good faith.

Agent Grange

This was my first Metal Gear Solid I played for whatever reason and I really forgot how much netorare shit is in it. It just seemed normal at the time because I had no other frame of reference.

Quacko

My only correction is that at the end Solid Snake stares at the bosses tombstone and then after lighting a cigarette moves over to Grey Foxes tombstone.

Lono's Oboe

Just want to chime in and say I am fucking loving this series. Big fan of the MGS games and it's so relatable to both you guy's day jobs and general attitudes. Looking forward to finishing it out and would definitely like a series that covers some of the other games you talk about. Not even full series chats, just one about Ace Combat, Army of 2 Modern Warfare 2, Splinter Cell and so on. Replaying those games now really reminds you of where we were back in 2007-2014

Maii Degeese

I recently replayed Death Stranding and it’s funny, a lot of the complaints about MGS4; the HBO series length cutscenes, dense nonsensical lore that’s constantly retconned, and funny dialogue writing; that’s all there in DS. By the end I could only think “I swear if they say Beach one more time…” That was a game that Kojima had almost complete creative control over so you can’t blame it on Konami. I really liked Death Stranding too. My best advice for it is don’t get too invested trying to figure out what’s happening. Because what little I’ve seen of Death Stranding 2 much of it just gets denser or retconned again.

Panic Surfer

I think MGS isn’t nearly as deep as people think it is, but one through line from the MSX games to MGS4 is that they were written as video games. MGS2 was basically telling the player “you’re a gay loser for playing this game, go outside” which, given how poor the writing is otherwise, is really good advice haha Then in 3, the player stand in character is beaten, stripped and shoved into a locker after being roasted by Zero and others. The games hate us haha

Michael S. Judge

we had Emotion Bullets in Catholic school too

Donald Barrett

Seeing nothing so far about the very mid-2000's product placement of the iPod in the game and the fact that rather than tapes for the Sony Walkman/iDroid, you find iPod songs and there's an in-game podcast that is two guys talking about the game like it's a director's commentary and it can serve as a walkthrough, and the fact that the iPod helps manage Snake's psyche gauge.

D Metcalf

I repurchased a copy of MGS4 to see if I felt as weird about this game then as I do now

dog on the roof

Played through first time with a friend, so dying on the suicide gecko section meant we got to pass off the controller and watch some of the vamp fight until we beat it. Small addition to the cqc was the ability to arm triangle in 4, where you could take a crouched person prone and even though it was a slower way to choke people out it was fun. Particularly in multiplayer because it was the most slow, annoying way to knock someone out.

drunk cig

I have to point out that Ocelot is the Boss's son, and has always been, knowingly or not, the Philosopher's man on the inside. He "hypnotized himself," or just pretended to be Liquid for clout. He gave up trying to use other people to make his plans happen and just became meme, to quote a personal hero of mine. He needed something to clearly connect him to Big Boss.

Rose

Hey guys, I think you forgot to upload the Portable Ops podcast?

Abhay

The fourth game's story has the issues discussed, I remember being very frustrated, but I do still think there's something interesting there. Part of me (maybe silly) thinks it does get right what happens to Stories "when the patriots take over"-- all its lore and repetitions of what worked before (to diminishing effect) and everything devolving into an old man version of a character you loved before crawling around on his belly... sound familiar. The obvious comparison being corporate Star Wars movies, where the "guy shitting in a can" is Darth Vader's grandson, or some shit. I don't know how much of MGS4 is really *intentionally* about any of that-- I think saying it's all intentional would be way, way too generous. But when the romantic hero turned out to be the IBS guy and has a gun-dance-romance sequence, I remember feeling like I was getting "dabbed on"-- it's hard to believe that was entirely sincere, either... Anyways, thank you for the podcast. I'm enjoying it a lot.

Josh Woods

The entirety of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots happened to me while I was a missionary for the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints during 2013 and 2014.

simulacral

Hey fellas, loving the series. You mentioned several video essays about MGS4, but I was wondering if you had read the MGS2 and MGS4 essays by Deltahead translations? They do a great job at pointing out the more meta-narrative aspects of both games (like the Nerd/Node you mentioned in MGS2 having the player enter their name before Raiden casts it off in the conclusion once he gains his own identity outside of player control). Kojima has such a weird writing style wherein he beat the player over the head with maximal explanations for the all the in-game systems and story beats while at the same time letting some of the more unique decisions/symbolic aspects be experienced through gameplay directly. I felt this a lot in both Death Stranding games as well. Not trying to be an annoying fan who assigns homework so obviously feel free to ignore if you're not interested. MGS2: https://www.deltaheadtranslation.com/MGS2/ MGS4: https://www.deltaheadtranslation.com/MGS4/

DT

I need to hear Felix ramble about Ac!d 1+2 for at least 6 hours!

Vivian Irby

Important note about the Madnar/Raiden connection: Madnar is one Raiden needs to repair him because Madnar actually did the same thing to Big Boss. Spoilers for SNATCHER: Madnar invented the SNATCHERs, and in MG2 he's supposed to have rebuilt Big Boss' body with SNATCHER parts after the first game, which is why Snake can't just punch him to death. Of course Phantom Pain gives us a different explanation for how Big Boss is alive in 2.

Kurt

I got it just for this series and I've been listening to them on there. So far no issues.

J Fitz

Guys, I tried. I don’t play video games and these episodes are a slog. I got through the first one but the rest I can’t make it through ten minutes. At the end of the day, these games just sound like dumb slop like everything else

Andy

Are you gonna talk about Metal Gear Rising?

Will Wade

The door's over there pal

tendo

Really enjoying these. My thing with Kojima is that within the world of videogames hes pretty singular, but hes honestly just manga/anime as fuck. Hes a perv. Hes overly complicated manga plots. Hes dumb gags. Hes somewhere in between ghost in the shell the manga and the movie.

Ryan + Castor Dwyer

Bro if you don’t like video games you probably aren’t going to like a video game podcast

Chantz

Forcing yourself to listen to a podcast on something you're not interested in is confoundingly stupid

Ethan Schulz

“like everything else”? You might just be depressed. I never played these games personally, but I watched one of my best friends play the first three over and over in high school, and so I really appreciate the heavy focus on the plot and lore and what Kojima is saying with this series (as opposed to focusing on nuts and bolts gameplay, not that this series wasn’t important for that). But then I graduated in ‘08 and lost touch, and so I’m thinking I’ll drop off in episode four here as well. But damn it felt great to listen to the first three episodes and relive those marathon gaming sessions vicariously.

Ksizzle

Man listens to a 20 hour podcast series about a game series he never played while not really liking video games in the first place, then wants recognition for his efforts in wasting his own time. I assume no one has you at gunpoint to tune in.

Fredy Garcia

Flawed and dumb in a bunch of parts, but there goes the last ballad of Solid Snake with a great send off. (God, I've been loving this podcast)

Jacob

You guys forgot about the easter egg where if you lie down on the bed Laughing Octopus straddles you.

EggWorld3d

No one was asking for your feedback, the only reason to comment this stuff is to smell your own farts about how evolved you are for having different preferences in entertainment. Which isn't exactly the behavior of someone who feels secure in their maturity!

Ana

My feeling with the FOXALIVE thing is that they probably were considering doing the Escape from L.A. "welcome to the human race" EMP ending by having Solid Snake just take out all technology at the end. But while that was the best possible ending for Snake Plisken (in an otherwise sub-par Escape from NY sequel) since Plisken was a stone-cold cynic who didn't give a fuck about consequences and just wanted the annoying people who kept bothering him gone, it would be totally out of character for Solid. Maybe Naked back before he turned into a cult leader, but not Solid. Hence the ridiculous compromised approach.

Stephen Lynn

What a smarmy pos thing to say lmao. You’re not better than us because you refuse to engage with an art form you deem “childish”

In defence of writers i’d imagine just because screaming mantis can control people’s nanomachines doesn’t mean she could control everyones across the globe at once like you could if liquid-ocelot took control of the AI’s. Obviously agree that the story in general though has much less thought put in as the previous three in terms of contradictions.

Snake at a big bosses grave immediately is japanese culture shit 100% I think, it makes sense with mgs3, but in mgs4 it's all about death. And it's like the constant visiting of graves I think, less so a regression of mgs3, completely the opposite I think

You guys forgot the silly catapult launchers that send you and Rat Patrol onto Arsenal Gear in the final act

Kevin Boyle

This is how little they think of the players of this game, and listening to the last hour of this podcast, theyre right.

GG Allin Dulles

Hey, I think if snake is flexible enough to top himself why worry about what he does alone in the privacy of his own bedroom?

Eamon Short

Holy shit, I thought you were exaggerating how old the PS3 was. But i looked it up, and it was almost exactly 19 years ago it came out. Fuck I'm getting old dude. In my head i thought that was like 11 or 12 years ago, but no. It pretty much is two decades old.

Eamon Short

Yeah, you can only listen to it through a PS3.

triplevalaska

I'm not saying I'm better then anybody. But this has to be the stupidest thing i have ever listen to. I did my chores but I hate this.

Raiden

Raiden
