The boys start with a roundtable discussion of 9/11 and modern fashion trends. Then, we take a look at the New York Times new in-depth reporting on Yeshiva schools in NYC failing to teach children basic skills, and how that relates to the state & purpose of public education in general. Finally, Will has sourced an exquisite reading series on the passing of the Queen by Chicago’s own Jon Kass.

How is the thing about Hasidic schools any surprise? I had a friend tutoring a Hasid in the multiplication tables in his 20’s when he “wanted to be an accountant” but couldn’t do elementary school math. This was like over a decade ago and he had multiple clients like that. It’s no secret that they don’t teach basic education and never have. No shit.

P$

Pete Davidson did 9/11

Brendan Garcia

I think we’ll keep going back in time, continuously approaching 9/11, but never reaching it. 9-11 is the the asymptote, the zero moment.

Sav

Public school teacher here - most public schools are just as guilty in terms of failing to provide basic literacy instruction for poor students. Most large urban districts used the absolute non-sense "units of study" reading curriculum for years, so they've also sold generations of kids down the river with no basic reading skills. Look at 4th grade reading in the recent NAEP results. Folks like Mayor Adams and the LA Superintendent are promoting structured literacy/science of reading and changing things - but it still seems hypocritical to get pissed at the Hasids specifically for shit you can condemn most of our k-12 institutions for.

Sav

Also, corporal punishment isn't illegal in a number of states, not sure about NY. It's disgusting.

Alexandr

I am a bi-sexual woman with MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES!

Alexandr

It's no surprise, we all knew about it in whispers. What's a surprise is that the NYTimes is doing any sort of actual coverage of it. You know there's kinda a campaign that smears the people who say anything about any community of Jewish people as being anti-Semitic, right? It's already been going on with that story.

Wilko

If you're so disgusted by the modern world around you, and all the unclean heathens living in it, that you feel it necessary to indoctrinate your kids to stay away from it, you really can't expect to be included and supported by that world. Go live in the woods or something. P.S.: Maybe some people just can't come to the shows, but f*** us I guess.

Ellen Harold

Arguably it is not accurate that the Hasidic boys study character and spirituality as opposed to the middle class success and power allegedly taught in public schools. In the Hasidic community it is the rabbis who are the aristocracy & hold enormous power, and the boys are put through the gauntlet, so that a few of them, presumably, can rise to that status. As far as the Mennonite and Amish communities, they beat their babies, as I found out to my cost, when a Mennonite babysitter, who had been highly recommended to me by a pediatric nurse at the university hospital, planted a black and blue handprint on my 9 month old son's backside, whom she had watched for four hours. She said he was crying and she wanted to teach him who was boss. I had to to report her to the authorities and also the naive nurse who had recommended her, and also to have my child photographed by a doctor. I learned that in North Carolina, where this took place, that if you consign you child to a babysitter or a school, you give them permission to legally beat them. Though leaving a hand-shaped bruise on the baby is beyond the pale even in that "Christian" state. My mother, who lived in Pennsylvania at the time in the vicinity of these sects, said she could have warned me, as their child rearing customs are well known..

nobody64

I mean, what on earth did the nurse get charged with?

Antipaganda

I live in Australia, and it's definitely my fault for not being able to come to the shows.

hellsonly

The director K in Blue Movie is supposed to be Stanley Kubrick.

Twistedsister

The 666th ep should be a solo Felix episode where he investigates the time Travis Scott summoned Satan at a concert

Kerri

The girls need to use math all the time while cooking. Makes sense.

Ellen Harold

I told her first ,and I think she came to my house and saw the bruise and was totally shocked, but she didn't report it, which is against the public health regulations, apparently. She probably didn't know she was supposed to, and I think she considered the woman her friend. The doctor who examined my son was very angry at the nurse. She probably got a talking to wasn't punished in any way. Nobody was punished. The babysitter was required to take childrearing classes, though she and her husband didn't think they had done anything wrong. She was about to open a day care center and I was told by a lawyer, who I guess was part of the child abuse team, that if I warned anyone about her, I could be sued for interfering with someone's ability to make a living. It was a learning experience. We didn't make much use of baby sitters after that.

Adam Leuer

Are uncontacted tribes in South America wrong for not teaching their kids math and literacy? Are the Hasids fundamentally any different? The obvious difference is they're not geographically isolated, but they are isolated, in a sense. Ultimately what really matters is whether your education will allow you to live a happy and fulfilled life within the context of your community or society.

Ellen Harold

I think it may be legal in NY in private schools.

Dick Wolf

i‘m sorry to tell you guys that jincos have been zoomer attire for like 2 years now, this shit done been accelerated

Poppy Chulo

The difference is the south american tribes sustain themselves and the hasids reap the benefits of community while actively shunning it, undermining it, and exploiting it.

BigBoto

Great ep. I always knew Will was a Shania Twain stan

BigBoto

He says FDD- Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. Basically some Council on Foreign Relations ghoul shit

Culture, Power, Politics

From a UK perspective, the commentary on Britishness and the monarchy was absolutely spot-on mate. Nice one.

blackFFillip

The riff on elected figureheads as heads of state paired with a jury duty kind of governance is inspired

Dean Phillips

Big L by Will praising the Amish. The Amish abuse the fuck out of their children and basically avoid paying any and all taxes despite owning massive amounts of land

LunchPimp

Fuck you I paid for this ep

Yacobum

Can’t believe I woke up and heard this kind of bigotry from you guys. Assuming the king and queen of America would have to have P in V sex for their election to be valid. Ummm maybe be better guys.

William

Not true for Pennsylvania Amish - they are responsible for income and property taxes

William

@ Alexander - the NYT never does any journalism that matters unless the topic is a limited hangout or it's a topic that helps them have credibility for when they lie on other stuff

Dean Phillips

Don’t pay SS tax, Medicaid, workers comp, and likely pay no sales tax on intra-group sales. Also yeah don’t even bother addressing what they do to their children. Girls stop going to school at like 12. Rampant domestics and sexual violence. Most communities only teach children old German not English, no science, only basic math.

Doug Cartel

I cant wait for stavros to go on chapo and tell us about his grandpa's exotic birds for the first time

Doug Cartel

Iranians truly did think they could reset relations with the US after 9/11, and then fucking David Frum was like ahhaha nope (but he was just a mouthpiece for a whole faction in DC)

Absolute Unit

they arent releasing some of their live episodes? oh thank god

etienne

I never understood people who swear and censor it themselves. do you want to swear or not? you have to pick either

William

Chapo is at their best when doing, "(x) is like/looks like..." material. Still remember the one from John smick, "He looks like what would happen if you dropped frosty's magic hat on a boar's head deli meat counter"

William

Jfc the British rolled over nearly every technologically inferior indigenous population for hundreds of years then they had to finally face an opponent of equal or better ability and they fucking cry about it for over a hundred years now. Surviving the fucking blitz and the Dunkirk spirit is all these fat oafs have going for them. Same can be said for the US who have never beat another country of near equal ability in a 1v1 military engagement

Doug Cartel

"the movie deals with how the hysterical celebrity mob demanded the queen act humble, which my mom-mom always loved her for doing"

Wilko

You're not wrong, but if you've spent any time on social media, you know, this is what people do, habitually, since you never know what the companies who run these sites will ban you for. I don't censor myself IRL.

etienne

screw, hell, stuff, woe, heck. You have such a wide choice of alternatives at your disposal

Alex Gullen

From a recent post: ‘’In Edinburgh, a woman was arrested “in connection with a breach of the peace” for holding up a sign saying, “Fuck imperialism, abolish monarchy” outside St. Giles’ Cathedral where the Queen’s coffin was due to arrive. A 74-year-old was also charged for the same “offence”, and a younger man arrested for calling, “[Prince] Andrew, you’re a sick old man” during the royal procession. In Oxford, a man, Symon Hill, was arrested and handcuffed for “disorderly conduct” after shouting “Who elected him?” during a reading of Charles’s proclamation. A woman was led away from parliament in London for holding up a sign reading “Not my king” while Charles addressed MPs. Indicative of the underlying concerns is the media’s denunciation of popular Scottish comedian Kevin Bridges for his accurate comment regarding the queen that “she’s not going to be the only old woman to die this winter.” ‘’

everyone named in this paragraph is a king except for Charles

Groups like The Heritage Foundation support ultra-Orthodox Jews solely to ensure the conditions for Revelations are met. 144k displaced Jews that could effortlessly blend into 2nd century Judea? Bring out the unblemished heifer, it’s Rapture Time baby!

Sifl

Privatization/vouchers, etc. is just one side of the coin to destroy public schools. The other side is charter schools and standardized testing. Charter schools are still siphoning funding from regular public schools, especially in low income neighborhoods. Charter schools are trying to set the stage for selling the public school system to private equity or some publicly traded company. The problem has been that every time a for profit company takes over a charter it is an unmitigated disaster. That is why we have standardized testing and the No Child Left Behind Act. Standardized testing is an attempt to take teachers out of teaching by coming up with a hyper standardized curriculum that can be administered by web based apps so that you don't need teachers anymore. You just need a school resource officer with a cattle prod to keep kids in line. I pulled my kids from public schools because testing has completely ruined my local public school. The kids spent half the school year doing stupid worksheets to prep for the big annual test. For most kids the test is easy and the worksheets are boring. For kids who have fallen behind or are SPED, the worksheets are the last thing in the world they need to be doing to get caught up or to deal with their SPED issues.

Patriotic American conservatives instinctively know to defend the English monarchy like clockwork, whether they straight up turn into court bootlickers like Miller or sublimate the demand for propriety and repression by calling it “stiff upper lip” and pretending it’s a working class attitude like Kass

Clean Shirt Piggie

What’s the 1/4 billion Will says NY can free up for public schools????

Cody Hewitt

I listen on the patreon feed and they still have the "you didn't pay for this" I want chris to edit himself in say "you did pay for this you sweet boy, so proud of you :3"

Jacob Jones

I mean... Just about all of us are descendants of Kings and Queens. So we should be able to easily govern ourselves with all of that perfect royal blood swirling in us.

Ozzie

Kass found a half rotten kielbasa in the couch cushions and poisoned his brain with trichinosis before he wrote that article

calvin kilby

man this is like the cum town joke about how black kids can't have lunch because jewish schools demand and receive so much money but it's actually really sad.

Lindsay R

Hate to break it to y’all but the JNCOs are already back 😥

Tyler S

Get you a girl that loves you as much as Matt loves cutting off Will mid-sentence

anonymoose

Anyone know what article they talk about at the beginning? I live on a pedo island (uk) and cant make any live shows :(

William

Yeah, they don't get any benefits from ss, medicare/caid, or workman's comp either. They're shitty enough without exaggerating shit to make stuff sound worse - they are responsible for sales tax too but wow, I would be completely surprised if they did that shit under the table. As far as I know no American does that

Micah

Who can even afford the live shows tho

Mark Schneider

Thanks to Will & the boys for making the effort to track the "Royals" & how ugly & grotesque they become over time. Despite having a fair amount of British isles' parentage, I just find that culture and especially the royalist cult so grotesque than I can't look at it any more than the Kardashians, Real Housewives of N.J., etc. But nice to hear the sick details from the Chapo crew.

Mark Schneider

Jaysus; & people ridicule the Thais (rightly) for Royalist protecting laws!!

M

Great ep, today. Super compelling discussion of schooling—something (to my surprise and shame) I’d not heard about (the NYT article, etc.). Seems like inviting ALA president-elect Drabinski might be a cool conversation if you can swing it. Thanks for the work.

nicedickdude

Wow I had no idea standardized tests were so antisemitic

Jacques Robespierre

I’ve already seen tons JNCO kids showing up in Seattle in the last year.

Kate Baldwin

Will has really poisoned my brain where I heard Jon Kas and got excited

Shiv

Not only this ^ as I work with educators, I can heartily cosign Savannah’s points, but to assert “community and culture” can’t exist without literacy is very wild!! I think Will temporarily forgot about the many types of historic and contemporary Americans boxed out of an education in book-learning. I’m all about words, but come on.

Micheline

Bobby Cannavale could absolutely play Hunter Biden

The Etymology of Nonsense

When I think of the best reading series targets, I always forget about Kass. But every time he pops up I'm reminded of why he is among the greats. Keep writing John, always

Oh no, not the live episodes… lol

Guelph smells like pig shit, so his mom wasn't really missing much by leaving.

I’m listening to this on Patreon, does this mean I’m not paying for the episode? I’m confused by the disclaimer at the beginning

they publish the tuesday eps in full on soundcloud but paywall the thursday eps here, but started publishing the tuesday eps in full here anyways so that I could have just one rss feed

Eric Jacobsen

> "… a parochial version of QANON… we don't need the Bible anymore, we have 'proofs'" In a recent Neal Stephenson novel, he writes about a sect of "Leviticans"… an excerpt: "So-called Christianity, as it existed up until recently, is based on a big lie. That Jesus was crucified. That the Son of God, the most powerful incarnate being in the history of the universe, allowed Himself to be scourged and taken out in the most disgraceful way you can imagine. [...] The church that was built on the lie had two basic tenets: one was the lovey-dovey Jesus who went around being nice to people… the kind of beta who would allow himself to be spat on, to be nailed to a piece of wood. The second was this notion that the Old Testament no longer counted… a fake Reformation to get people to believe that reform was possible… Martin Luthor was running a false-flag operation for the Pope." Maybe just understand the live episodes aren’t as good to listen to when you’re not in the audience as the regular episodes are. So post them, but not in place of the actual episodes.

The cultural ‘wheel of time’ will sweep past the 90s and land you square on 1983 with the ambiance of ‘The Day After’ and Able Archer.

When they first posted live dates earlier in the year there was a SF date. That disappeared all of a sudden though

skrrt vonnegut

crossing the family trees of the royals and the commoners? Great Britain, still anti miscgenation i see.

NLC

If you write something opinionated with colorful language they give you that warning on twitter that it isn't like most tweets and I think you get put beneath a conversation in the "show more" section.

Doopdeedoodee

For real, they clearly didn't venture out in Portland enough, either.

Sam

Why did you guys made fun of the way I dress around 15 mins of the podcast?? -- jokes aside, 70-80s fashion revival already happened. It just was not as mainstream and stuck to internet subcultures. The difference right now is that the internet is mainstream, so is the fashion revival we see rn.

Gulb

"sausage snarfing twat" lol

Wyatt Raley

Matt calling Americans an "upgrade" on the British seems like it would piss them off more than just straight anti-British jokes

Zarathushtra

That’s why we can’t abolish private schools, how else will kids get half a decent education. In Broward county Florida it wasn’t going to be at a public institution.

Jon

Felix doing applause breaks now

Poppy Chulo

This is one of the best episodes I've ever heard. I think the show is at its best when the boys go over current events and their political implications versus the movie mindset and D@D stuff or the even the guest episodes.

blackFFillip

Live shows are bad product, and it’s clever to hang their demise on the losers and haters, when it’s really just a quality control move

Antipaganda

They're royals, they are required by tradition to be disgusting freaks. P in V is therefore mandatory.

Antipaganda

Not me, mate, it's all goatfuckers in my family back to before agriculture.

Antipaganda

It's almost as good as Dave Anthony's British accent

Jacob Jones

What's more royal than goat fucking? That's their favorite pastime. If not royal in blood, certainly royal in deed.

drewb

Full support to the guy in Edinburgh who told Andrew Windsor exactly what he was, the worthless gammonites in the crowd who beat him up should have their hard drives forensically checked

Matt Trimble

Appreciated Matt trying to bring some nuance to the school discussion. I’ve been a public school teacher and I believe there’s a lot of emotional abuse and damaging indoctrination built into the basic structure and goals of that system. To me it makes sense that parents with any values outside of the mainstream (or basic knowledge of child development) would look for other options…I know I will. Not saying that the particular schools they were criticizing are any better (they seem worse) but the “this is the modern world deal with it” take sounded like a shallow Bill Maher bit to me. Also does it ever seem like the Chapo guys are afraid to argue with each other? It seems like they’ll start disagreeing but always pull back before it gets interesting.

etienne

they had precisely one adversarial interview way way way way way back and decided to never disagree with anyone on air ever again. trad cath named matthew walter if you want to look it up. it's not on the main feed. it's pretty spicy edit: right yeah they had Robby Soave from Reason on before that

etienne

I counted back to june 2nd and I got: - 16 eps with just the dry boys and current events - 12 eps with at least 1 guest (includes eps where they had one dryboy segment and one guest segment) - 1 movie mindset - 1 live - 1 inebriated past do you think there's not enough dry boy eps or too much or about the right amount?

Valentino

I'm half italian so I can play half a jewish guy in a movie.

Matt

The live shows are awesome. Nothing will beat the energy of the Bernie era live. ❤️

Unless your politics doesn’t end at worshipping Bernie Sanders. Aka myself and any other person who’s country was ruined by western “leftists” apathy and hatred of us in the global south.

y u so upset my guy

broadfjord

You guys gotta cover the railroad strike this could be as historic as it would be disastrous

Of course

Disastrous for whom?

Of course

The Hasidic school issue (inc $1 billion in government funding in the last four years) recalls the Covid issues also with the same group, and then... I remember how the state enforced "modern society" standards on Philadelphia MOVE in 1985. Quite a different approach.

etienne

oh just people who need oil, coal, base construction materials, iron, cars, car parts, bulk chemicals, lumber, B737 aircraft bodies, millions of commuters and long-distance passengers, farmers needing to ship out their harvest

Amtrak also just cancelled all consumer rail trips in preparation so people done die because they rely on those railroads for their tracks and switches so thousands of people just got stranded

The nostalgia around the time of the Sanders campaigns is upsetting to some of those who still need more progress to be done and want to push forward. You’re not wrong for saying they were good times but let’s not also think that we don’t have better times ahead is what I guess I’m trying to say. 🙏✊

@Will we were both in the case center watching it on the big screen

Chubby Justin

Meaning no disrespect (to you, not kass)

Jeff

While articles like this Kass piece are definitely funny, they are also a tad infuriating because you know that millions of people in the US hold a similar strength of cognitive dissonance about this topic and from so many angles. Chief among them: “I miss the days when this country was meritocratic!!! So anyway back to praising this person who got their status & wealth purely through royal association.” Reminds me of the myriad bad faith takes on the student loan forgiveness controversy. Also, why are super patriotic Americans so fond of British royalty? Wasn’t the inception of the US predicated on banishing monarchy? On sticking it to the king and queen? “Don’t Tread On Me” and all that?

Chubby Justin

Every time i see that reptile i have to wonder why people find him appealing. This clears things up.

Zach Lemon

I agree with your sentiments on monarchy, but let's remember our rubecestors wanted to make George Washington King. Really we were predicated on allowing tea smuggling and killing Indians west of the Appalachians to clear the land for chattel slavery and white farming. Still, being pro monarchy is super weird, especially if you're 'Murican.

Brendan A. MacWade

American who also hates Diana and all monarchies here. I will agree with Jon Kass on one point. It was a poor artisitc choice for Elton to repurpose Candle In The Wind for Diana. The most perfect thing would be if the dude learned how to play Maurice Ravel's Pavane for a Dead Princess. That would have been sick. Elton, putting aside his voice to play an appropriate classical piece. An opportunity lost! Also: Irish Unity took a big fucking step forward today. The bitch is in her tomb. She didn't live to see the union break up. It will soon be time for Ireland to unify and become a great nation for the very first time.
