Dude, you completely misread the context. They’re saying the harsh reality is that culture has failed the younger generations by selling distraction and alienation instead of valuing connection and interdependency. The sex problem is simply one aspect of the broader problem of alienation from other humans. It’s about profit over quality of life. The “surplus” is simply those who are left behind in the race towards the next big distraction. The media seems highlight or exploit this one facet of that alienation, lack of sex, creating this belief that the reason these sexless men are miserable is b/c they aren’t having sex. But the root of it is a lack of face to face interaction with other humans, shared experiences and all the messiness that goes with it. So you’re missing the point, or cherry picking statements. And as an aside in general, am I not doing the math correctly that there should be a fairly similar amount of same aged women are also not having sex, or are they double, triple, quadrupling up on the same dude? I don’t think women are as neutral about not having sex as they’re made out to be. Talking heads need to STFU and instead cash in on dating services or something.

Yeah, in my memory of being a mildly awkward young guy in the aughts, the biggest proportion of my social interaction/flirtation/etc. with women my age came as a result of being a smoker in the time before widespread smartphones. Just having those regular intervals of like 5-15 minutes of being thrown into a random small group of people with nothing to do but talk to each other was huge, especially at shows or parties. I'm not sure if that avenue would exist if I was that age now, partially because of the (probably good, I've quit myself) decrease in smoking rates, but mostly due to smartphones. If everyone, including me, had had a boredom-erasing device in their pocket, there'd be no push factor to overcome the social anxiety of coming off as weird or obnoxious to a stranger, or of them being weird or obnoxious to you.

If you have a youth bulge and a generation of men who realize they won't ever really have enough money and will have to scrounge around for (generally unsuccessfully) for women you can get them to join an organization that promises just that, respect and money, and women. That's really what Isis appeal was to many of the young men who joined, Islam was incidental, a way for them to unify. What got them so pumped was actual decent wages (look up what Isis members were paid in Mosul and Raqqa) and guaranteed wives. Literal markets where you could go buy one. Most of my girlfriends are coupled up 5+ years except me and my one friend (who is a 10 in most categories honestly) and the two of us just straight up don’t have sex. Dating apps suck and after a certain age you don’t go to places that are prime for being picked up. That’s just how things are rn generally. If there’s any unevenness in terms of numbers it would likely be supplemented by all the people who are “ethically non-monogamous”

What do you mean by "surplus males"? In the US there are enough females for the number of males. Maybe we have a surplus class, or surplus of one gender within the middle class, created by conditions, but we don't have an overall gender imbalance. The loneliness is not a guy problem, it is just that frustrated male rage is the most attention-getting aspect. I don't know how it helps to talk about males in particular as being extraneous, even if you intend to suggest it as an injustice.

I think he means in the sense of surplus males to what is needed, ie, extra men that are not required for economic activity, so essentially irrelevant to the goings on of society. Not specifically a gender ratio. This is an undergirding metric for lots of historic world conflict--segments of population that have no utility and are made obsolescent, in large enough numbers, cause significant social instability.

Thoughts on the left reaching incels and disaffected guys: a thread 👇🏼 I think, Chapo boys, if you wanted to, you guys could be profoundly impactful in reaching out to men caught up in the incel pipeline. The whole “dirtbag left” label you have makes you more appealing to these guys then the hyper-woke Twitter crowd. This is because you act like normal human beings, not obnoxiously perfect models of tolerance and inclusivity who won’t acknowledge the alienation and suffering of lonely men. I really like how Hasan and Stav speak to these guys in their streams. They have a zero tolerance policy for the misogyny and entitlement to women’s attention. But they also offer a deep understanding and compassion as well. They also give simple, concrete advice to these guys to help them improve. Has always says “practice good hygiene, find a haircut that works for you, and be confident”. Stav laughs at them being entitled to women, but also says “I’m sorry for what you’re going through, brother, that’s tough. But you’re going to get back on your feet.” Women also need to be more compassionate to the awkward guys who fumble talking to us. We feed into the problem when we’re cruel to the weird, shy guy who tries to ask us out and we’re not interested. If we humiliate them needlessly when they aren’t being misogynistic or creepy, we shouldn’t be surprised when they resent us. EDIT: another commenter pointed out that women aren’t a single group that operate as a unit, but a group of individuals who make their own choices. Fair enough. I’ll amend the last paragraph to say that specifically women who humiliate “weird” guys to feel better about themselves should change their behaviour. And women being nicer is not a substitute for actually addressing the route causes of isolation and entitlement in these men.

idk why the supposed "structural solution" everyone is pushing online is "women need to be more compassionate to men"; like telling these men that "if you smell bad, people will avoid you," "if you are combative, people will avoid you," "if you act controlling about how others are allowed to perceive your behavior, people will avoid you," is just telling them to pull themselves up by their bootstraps instead of practically handing them a speedrun on how to socialize that so many people adapted over the course of years of active socialization. This is 100% fair. However, I think two things can be true at once. I don’t say that a “women be nicer challenge” is a systemic solution by any means. Especially when women continue to be victimized by men due to the ✨patriarchy✨. I agree with you, women are individuals, and it’s silly to address all women as a monolith that can be instructed. The systemic solution is broader and requires all the economic, social, and class reforms that leftists advocate for all the time. At the same time, I personally think that *some* women should be kinder to disaffected men instead of labelling them as simps and losers. Not all women do this, so not all women need to change their behaviour. As a secondary and less important effort, I think it could make a positive change while we work towards the broader goals of leftism.
