etienne

just came back to this kind of by accident; with some perspective it's now pretty clear to me that the Wright bros had some insights about plane handling that seem totally obvious in retrospect but that seemingly no one else understood, i.e. they wer doing banked turns while everyone else were still bashing their heads on flat steering like boats do. I think I really didn't give the Wrights their due. but I still think that heavier-than-air was due to happen any moment now because of the augmentation in power-to-weight ratios that was just out there

catsjvk

Oh shit boys I'm pogging out

Tristan

Ah Patrick, thanks for a good morning at work fellas

MinkL0af

Best intro in the game

Kyle Drake

Luther's "The Jews and their Lies" was a banger, glad nobody ripped down any of his shitty statues.

Karl Childers

funniest intro of any podcast. it's overdetermined.

Adam Hauck

How big a baseball fan are you, Matt? You’re dropping a lot of sabremetrics talk lately: replacement level, 3 true outcomes, etc. love to hear your thoughts on league-wide DL and the latest rule change against over-shifting the infield.

sir peepus

is there any way we can get Matt a shittier mic?

oguryets

A hinge points on Constantinople not falling would be super cool

etienne

humbly proposing the least consequential but funniest hinge point: France maintains colonial presence in Australia, thus birthing Australian Quebec

Get Shmoneysuke

Imagining now a situation similar to Quebec where the only difference is people refuse to communicate to you in the language everyone else in the country uses and they get a political party identical to the liberal party but french nationalist

etienne

yeah yeah sure but: imagine how fucked the accents would be

C. Ries

Martin Luther’s wife was ugly hot 🥵

NYCM&AHole

That’d be amazing. I wonder what fucked up French names for marsupials would be

etienne

my mans trying to relitigate the Lake Meech accords in the chapo patreon comments section because I offloaded a shitpost lmao. touch some lichen

Jordan Fish

Please do the Santa Claus episode

I disagree with the take that Luther is irreplaceable. Germany's relative lack of participation in the crusades compared to most of other Western Europe, and the very heightened development of the bourgeois within Germany, made it nearly inevitable for some economic and social movement, running contrary to the Catholic Churches rule within Germany, to fail to be absorbed by the Catholic Church in the way movements had previously up to that point. There would be a religious movement that reflected this social change eventually. Whether it be at the same time, or at most a few decades later.

God history makes me hard

How about a hingepoint on the invention of human aviation? That being, that the Wright Brothers and Giuseppe Bellanca failed in their inventions at that time. How would both World Wars and other conflicts of the time play out? Would the war spur the technology anyways, and what would that delay look like? Would the Cold War have played out differently if commercial airliners were not present at the start? And the ever lasting question, how would it effect the flow of capital?

etienne

absolutely impossible that someone else wouldn't have gotten it done at the very least within that decade. if anything the Wrights slowed things down right at the beginning by having a ass-backwards design while most of the other trials had the concept basically right but just not enough power to weight. negligible historical impact imo.

Karl Childers

seems like one of those cases where the individuals involved were entirely replaceable imo. people all over the world were building all kinds of crazy deathtraps trying to get airborne at the time, someone somewhere was bound to stumble across a design that worked.

etienne

yeah and most of them basically had it right, they just didn't have enough HP, which came along thanks for the internal combusion engine, whose developement was spurred on by ... everything

etienne

even the gas engine was another one of those things that was invented by like 3 different guys at once because it's a very easy thing to think of that has been proved to work the very second the materials and machining know-how got around to it

Jay

The Martin Luther storyline in that book your last guest mentioned, Civilisations, was sublime. Atahualpa drove him into a corner and he met a hilarious end. Highly recommended.

marcus rose

Wrong what if the ottomans had AK 47S

dawood

what if martin luther had tits

Bryant Eng

I definitely could have lived without the child-pilot's the Wright Brother's used.

Post Void

King Jr liked them too much, and was given a suicide plea letter by the FBI over it, which his wife opened [already knowing] and gave to him, and was like "get a load of this, these good old boys".

Bill

Intro music/ segment is great. Nice production value

soldiermighty

fuck yes the return of Matt Audio™

Marci Marsupial

Phli_phlam

“When Adam delved and Evie span, where was ye then thee gentleman” is the proverb Matt’s thinking of

justdave

also, it'd be called "Rape Island"

Of course

Haven't listened yet. But did they make the case that the 1963 March on Washington's main speaker would've been Thomas Aquinas King, Jr.?

Bryce Chambers

Yes, it's wildly simplistic, but could Luther = Gorbachev and Calvin = Xi?

Bobby Volcano

Damn, only 5 minutes in and feeling very seen as a podcast consumer. Not sure what it means that the world's first poster destroyed religion and society with posts, guess I'll find out what to think in the next 55 minutes.

Human Person

I like the original into song better

Sheep

“When Adam delved and eve span, who was then the gentleman?” Is the quote

How do you not edit out background sneezes...

As an uncle/nephew collab, I believe Socinianism is the most fitting Chapo creed.

DS

When I encounter these things on the Internet it's like a narcissistic fourth wall is broken and I become acutely sensitive again to the human condition.

DS

This podcast needs way more Tim Allen.

DS

I would pay $4.95 a month to listen to Matt fart on a snare drum if he also threw in a couple "orthogonal"s and spent 15 minutes of that month discussing the "breakdown of the feudal order."

Dan

I think that we are all in agreement that Protestant Christianity in some form was an inevitability; the example of the Hussites in Bohemia and Moravia provides a pre-Lutheran template for a reform movement that became a schism from the Catholic Church and attracted a mass base among the population. However, in the absence of Martin Luther, perhaps some of these reform movements would have remained dissident sects among the population, never fusing with state power anywhere ( i.e. Anabaptists). I'm intrigued by an alternate history where schisms with the Roman Catholic church across Europe occur more like the Anglican seccession, or multiple Avignon Popes across the continent.

Joe

Yelling into the void again here; and this episode validates it. M.C. — Our glorious slop-god: yes, it’s important to discuss China and the possibly emerging future, but I think that the last book you presented on CushVlog refutes that future. Stick to your strength in Marxist historical analysis: review Benedict Anderson’s “Imaginary Communities”, and circumscribe it with his historical analysis of nationalism being a function of the rise of print capitalism. We are nearing an era where the idea of a “nation” might be breaking down in what was once middle-class American society — and it would behove us to get out in front of it by acknowledging the farce of historical contingency that is the formation of the national identity to begin with. Peace ✌️

Peacock Jive

How about this idea. What if the August coup was successful?

No

Next episode the Hinge Boys are joined by guest Nick Mullen to discuss the age old question: What if a retard was gay?

Angle

Posting as the mover of history 😂😂😂

helvetica.hottie

I think this too. If you don't know anything about the Cathars in southern France and the "crusade" against them, look it up. It is another example that was rooted in the 13th and 14th century, so quite a bit earlier. They stand apart, much like the Anabaptists, because they didn't want to fuse with state power and wanted to be to themselves.

helvetica.hottie

Hearing Patrick say the fuck word is so funny. I listen to Tides of History and his other stuff, and his analytic style is the same, but it's so nice to have him here to hear a bit more of his personality come out. Awesome episode.

Smallbusinessman

opening music is good but not anywhere close to last years. bring it back!

Munir hakim

What all was wrong with the china book he read

Elliot robinson

wish i was smart enough to understand this stuff (i’m stupid)

peter_mcc

ten outta ten episode, this gave me a Real Good Think about the twin ideas of 1) an elite/literati existing in largely-independent Free Cities & 2) the printing press/books as speculative assets that really hit as one of the original/actually valid "technological disruptors" & how that dichotomy depended on martin luther himself. a wild time.
