We start off with some Law & Order: SVU talk that flows into a discussion of crime paranoia that cost the Democrats the house in suburban Long Island. Then, America’s epidemic of loneliness and corrupt hustlers trying to scam people into unnecessary for-profit hospice care. Grim! So we lighten up the back half of the ep with some more listener questions.

I randomly watched this episode of SVU about the sex bracelets like last night…Hayden Panettiere is in the ep lol

Logan

Trapo Chop Haus post cast

Alec

Happy transgiving!

etienne

joe brandon is asking congress to pass a law to force railroad unions to take the deal. most pro union president in history let's go

Shiv

slop!

Dan

More " Time for my Stories"?

Tanner McCullough

As someone who did Aikido, Seagal is considered a joke. That said, going to his dojo sounds wild and you should do it!

Henry Haller

Svu has got to be at least 1% responsible for qanon

Dan

Damn, you're telling me that the amount of human contact that I have is average? I assumed that I was basically a shut-in, living like a lonely senior.

Ben

I gasped at the hospice story out loud

Yarblockos

We need SVU trading cards too

cwen

Will sounds like he just finished a whole box of twinkies

THEKILLERWHALE

Ice T voice: "Yo, we found traces of semen and cocaine all around this private school perverts mouth and nostrils. He just finished off a whole box of innocent twinks."

eijy

" - What an ugly, ugly people - Oh hideous - But very nice though - Yeah wonderful"

James Cook

I had no idea the reason I agree with Felix all the time is because of damaging amounts of SVU and Something Awful over the last two decades

Khemith

Sausage fest. Bring back Amber.

William

If my opinion isn't valid because I don't have any desire to read a fishing book about a bunch of gay sailors that's also probably an allegory or some shit, that's fine

Abigail Pritchard

Why don’t you guys ever discuss Chris hedges, or his books? So many of your theories and analyses share significant affinity with his. An interview would be great, since his show has been canceled.

Doug Cartel

maybe I'm naive but I can only imagine those SVU writers laughing their asses off as they write these eps. How do you go "and the site is called Timmys Treehouse" and not immediately laugh at how stupid it is?

Doug Cartel

that CEO's definition of "socializing" is either "I have to go to too many launch parties and networking events" or "seeing another person = socializing"

Matthew Dunn

Yeah as an unfortunate lifetime Long Island resident, I can honestly say that a place that used to just be quietly conservative has turned into a full on Deep South MAGA stronghold.

Doug Cartel

I WILL STAND ATOP MY HEAD TO SELL YOU THESE END OF LIFE TREATMENTS

etienne

chips is a no brainer, I just cycle between Miss Vickies Jalapeno and unsalted 3-color Que Pasa corn chips

Laura

My roommate in college always had SVU on in the background. I started wearing headphones and listening to music instead because the show was making me paranoid. It was particularly bad when I started student teaching and I felt like there was a pedophile behind every bush. "THEY'RE AFTER THE CHILDREN!!!!" Is not a great message to marinate yourself in. Of course, you want to be aware of actual signs that kids are being abused, but that level of paranoia isn't helpful.

C. Ries

The male caller voices are embarrassing, and you just know those were the only two women to submit questions

Nolan

Wachusett, and Utz chip eaters stand up.

dog stone

as a salt and vinegar consuming scot i can only concede and crawl back to my cave

stop watcherman

Not here for soft mouth will and his kettle chip slander

brodie

I'm also super pissed that the special lays chips are gone because the cheddar jalapeno chips were so fucking good and now they are gone and I suffer in their absence

Do Golems Dream of Ceramic Sheep

Relevant line from The Ministry For The Future by KSR > Narcissists ... tend to stay indoors, live in ideas, and demand compliance and assent from everyone they come in contact with, who are all regarded as servants, or ghosts i.e., in this context, the death of the social life acts as an induced narcissism. Which kinda scans with some of what l've seen in the last few years

the dumpist

They may not be "goated" in every scenario, but in the right "vibe" Salt and Vinegar kettle chips are god tier.

B2B Commuter

People are more open to the critique that the cops are refusing to do their jobs because they are protesting the barebones oversight that we have managed to put on them over the past decade and the mere mention of reallocating money away from their ridiculously bloated budgets than the democrats think. I mean, we all saw their behavior at Uvalde, it’s not a crazy sell.

Westerday

Ketchup chips are wonderful, Herrs still makes them.

Jason Nuclear

The sports and politics scenario they’re describing is basically G Gundam

Chubby Justin

As a stem professional (i.e. stempro, stemlord), the idea that we are not educated bothered me until i got a job in the field. I am hapoy to he a dull rube now.

K H

I thought the bit about socialization was interesting because I have always been very solitary and it has fostered greater introspection in me(I think, maybe one caused the other). My first thought was "good, more people should be alone and think- oh uh oh, people AREN'T thinking." Felix had "clean your room/grill" moment where he told people not to fear being alone with their thoughts. Yet that is exactly counter to the same hyper fast media apparatus discussed in the show. So people are alone and NOT thinking. They are just absorbing content generated by an algorithm and fed through a feedback loop. Of course the bias set in the algorithm by its creators is predominantly, "be afraid of others, be afraid to cease the hustle, be afraid it won't work." I think there is a profound tiredness that precedes madness.

justdave

it reminds us all why he makes the big buck$

K H

I haven't seen that. Especially with the Uvalde thing. The ardent defenders would have always said anything. For many years people kept drinking water contaminated by lead because the problems it caused were always pinned to being Black or poor. Unfortunately we will probably be stuck waiting about 50 years so the old beliefs can die off. Here we only set the soil, won't even see the seed. I am increasingly convinced death by old age is a survival mechanism for our species.

Rxk Lenderman

Holy fuck I’ve been feeling a little lonely and it turns out im more social than like 80% of Americans

K H

We just need to ban anime tbh.

K H

Really gives you time to reflect on how meaningless laws are without consent of those governed. I pray to fuckin Alah that if a law is passed the railway workers have the balls to strike anyway. We'll see them bring back pinkertons.

Paul F. Holzfäller

Will doesn’t know what a good chip is if he’s crossing Kettle off the list.

John Smith

Maybe the reason I'm an engineer and not a psycho is bc I read constantly and respect the lib arts. It can be weird talking to other STEM people who are constantly dogging on the liberal arts, they're very stupid people. Ngl about half of my lib arts education comes from listening to pirated The Teaching Company while cleaning chicken at Popeyes back in the day, and commuting an hour to the state college I got my computer science degree. Not that TTC (now Wonderium) doesn't have issues, bc they market mostly to boomers I feel like they have a very conservative approach to history among other things, they don't want to challenge their audience and say anything too radical that might offend them. I kind of regret not signing up for more lib arts classes while at university, but I was exhausted with the compsci workload as it was.

John Smith

I also think that people need to do a lot more abstract philosophy. Not positivist shit, fuck positivism.

etienne

realistically they're all gonna take the back pay and quit and send the industry into death spiral (a bit more than before) and we'll be back right here within years

Evan Scott

Listening to non-Pennsylvanians talk about potato chips is depressing

Evan Scott

I don't think I've ever considered buying a pack of Lays

ChigBungus

If that listener doesn’t take the Aikido class, then they’re missing out on the opportunity to learn the art of running like an alien from the master himself.

The City in Exile Podcast

I swear not everyone in San Francisco is a soulless, drone-piloting, Huel swilling, crypto dingleberry. We're still fuckin here, god damnit.

Aaron Christmas

As someone who started listening to Chapo while contracting for a healthcare company DESTROY ALL THE HEALTHCARE JOBS. Side note there was a guy at that job who listened to Daily Wire 8 hours a day and would bang on his desk inches away from me whenever he got frustrated

Andrew M

man SVU took the "twin with the same DNA" shit straight from the only movie i've ever seen, Judge Dredd

Golander

Salt v vinnies, not for ninnies. Jalapeño, the best that we know

The Other Lauren

the part about how to discuss crime resonated with me because i live in a city and it sucks and i'm tired of getting fucked with by tweakers but the only options apparently are "death wish" or "getting mugged is good actually and if you don't like it you're fash"

JMB

Woman caller I will fuck you. Dm for contact information.

Do Golems Dream of Ceramic Sheep

The one nice thing l ever say about my fancy-pants university is that it made the Engineering students take humanities classes. (even on school-as-investment grounds it works out. We tend to compete with the actual engineering school big boys for jobs because we can actually write worth a damn).

Zarathushtra

All Dressed are the God Tier Chip.

justdave

yes, we should all be doing more sports and Akido, and talking about those things with friends, this why i became a leftist. (i did like 3 months of Akido when i was 19 and heavily drinking-it was my drummers idea, anyway there was this one dude from Spain who drove a motorcycle who went same hours as me who was pretty fukn coool)

叔叔六十四 (Uncle64)

The USA needs to have a better Healthcare system to manage the impact of such good chips.

Chubby Justin

Where do i sign up for the hospice care? I'm 37 and in pretty good shape again, finally, and chronic health problems are in remission. Will they suck me off?

Rachel Yara

thank you for reaching out and meeting your female listeners’ needs. That’s growth

Chubby Justin

Just go on tinder and say you're DEFINITELY NOT LOOKING FOR A HOOKUP.

etienne

my parasocial podcast friends telling me I need to go out and touch grass is kinda like mike lindell's crack dealer telling him he might be smoking a bit *too* much crack

Max Lopez

“Tremense” -Will Menaker

justdave

And all of us fellas sure are grateful for the Groupons and stocking stuffers you always send out each holiday season 🙏 🥲

Poppy Chulo

Maybe what she considers "fuckable" guys don't consider her a "fuckable" girl?

A Loon

dill pick does the trick

Nathan

valorant fans out

Chubby Justin

The people who would rather keep stacking boxes vs help the police is my fav

Nathan

For the girl looking for love, the only option is that you have to put yourself out there and go on a lot of dates. It sucks but eventually you'll find someone that's a good match. And if a guy is close to your ideals, you should give him two or three dates unless he does something egregious. People are awkward on first dates.

she's all rat

Chapo's gotta get some Covered Bridge next time they're up north, especially the Storm Chips. The secret ingredient is a unionized workplace. 😘👌

James Proulx

Interesting timing regarding the discussion of homeless people. I think NYC announced today or yesterday that they're going to start aggressively snatching people off the street. Not sure what the plan is beyond "we just don't want to have to see it" but yeah.

james

Lol Matt’s Jacksonville murder take, WRONG

Shiv

tell ‘em, comrade

Darbley

Maybe they'll fly them to homeless sanctuary cities in FL and TX.

Darbley

Anyone ever have Mrs. H.S. Balls chutney chips? I've only ever seen them in South Africa and they're amazing.

Percle

Matt’s got the closest to a respectable chip take between these degens, though we definitely do have All-Dressed and Ketchup chips in the midwest. Shoutout Munchos, Shoutout Lay’s Mango Habanero

Marcus

If I had to guess, it would probably involve some kind of slush or slurry.

DeftHanded

“What is dead may never die” -Will Menaker

Chubby Justin

Also lost a bunch of exclusionary criteria (e.g., height minimum) with instructions to swipe left if you meet them.

Chubby Justin

I will tell the lady i will sign up if she sucks me off

Bill

Gotta add the tactical walking cane to the merch store. This is a million dollar idea for sure

Peter Taylor

That dating advice was so wholesome.

devonshandsmelt

We need a Chap Movie Mindset “Safe” episode.

K H

Everything is fuckable if you have enough of it. Oh did you mean asex/gay WoW players?

K H

Even as a joke it is not ok or acceptable to tell anyone to use tinder.

K H

I'm not at all familiar with the specifics, but I'm pushing and holding out for a joint union operation between multiple industries. Unfortunately truckers are completely scattered despite being potentially the single most important group in the US.

etienne

it doesn't really matter. trains handle a *galactic* amount of freight that realistically nothing else can. just looking at fertilizer one way and grain the other way out. this amount of stuff traveling on the interstate, assuming you can round up enough trailers and diesel, would clog and destroy the roads instantly. that's why there are all those legal provisions where a railroad strike cannot happen without half a year of formal proceedings and and actual prescribed intervention of the federal government. I don't think a wildcat is really realistic, railroaders are having a terrible one as of the last decade but in the grand scheme of things they have a huge pay and the economy can absorb them anywhere else these days.

etienne

liberals will setup an elaborate regime of secret concentration camps rather than build a single unit of public housing

Clifton Whittaker

What’s the official chapo take on chainsaw man?

BureaucracyNow

“Gamer Girl who listens to Chapo” will be shooting fish in a barrel as soon as she finds her barrel

skrrt vonnegut

Anyone ever fuck with Old Dutch "Mexican Chili" chips?

Andrew M

female caller sup i am cool and i like cuba i think

Adam

Yo guys this episode and lonspermism were straight bangers thank u for ur service to this great nation

Permanent Lurker

Felix is right about relationships. When I was actively looking for a boyfriend I just kept striking out but when I decided to be celibate for a while I ended up meeting the man who is now my husband.

The wazzzzaaapp bud light dude

The hospice story is just a routine reminder that innovation is a euphemism for “expanding the boundaries of human debasement.”

Night Knight

female caller I am so bad at valorant and i like talking about cuba

Jeff

The chapos have it slightly wrong. Regular Law and Order, first 15 seasons especially, are superior to Svu in every imaginable way. Also I’m bi

Gardner

He'll be on the new season of SVU....

Tyler Pittman

Why does the "you listen to Citations Needed" feel weirdly pointed?

Wyatt Courtney

chris is such a traitor to cincinnati smh

jugsdotgov

no mention of the first few seasons of the Vincent donofrio one? (Bends forward and cranes neck inquisitively)

etienne

i almost had an impression it was an elaborate bit about guys who say they want a gamer girl waifu. anyways if i were her and were willing to lower my "shit-togetherness" requirement just a bit I'd hit some comic cons and anime expos

Tyler Mendonsa

Upper Midwest heads recognize Old Dutch supremacy

etienne

actually to be fair maybe she needs to learn how to flirt also

Jay Gordon

romance is just fucking around and finding out

Saga

As per Felix's advice, I'd like to know when I can expect my 'fuckable' guy? I stopped looking years ago and that bastard still hasn't shown up. Seriously though, I think there's a lot to be said about the loneliness epidemic being connected to the overtaxing of emotional content online. What we used to reserve for face-to-face contact is now being wasted on clikbait content engineered to manufacture outrage and prolonged engagement, and there's no way that doesn't alter our psychological make up from socially minded creatures to neurotic and perpetually anxious loners.

Mark Schneider

I really appreciate Matt's name-check of Citations Needed, though at the same time I am quite shocked that any of the NYT Masters of the Universe "journalists" would listen to a podcast that's very anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist, anti-Cop violence, etc. I'd think it might (?) challenge or upset their entitled little world views.

TangiePower

Grippo’s are excellent this is slander, best spicy hot powder in the business.

Chris

Prolly cause he's sort of a weirdo and Richard Wolfe is a real Marxist scholar

Marina

All i have taken from this episode is that Felix appears to be single 👀🧐🧐

Dammit Joe

Dear Gamer girl, I’m sorry i’m just not feeling it

Jack

too salty

dadjokefan

I desperately need you guys to review Stallone’s new smash hit series “Tulsa King”

Josh

As a guy who would be considered “conservative” by these hosts and the majority of their audience, I am FLOORED by how often I agree with these guys. And how much more we all have in common, than we don’t.

Jonathan G

I'm sort of a nonreader. I mean, I would love to, but I don't have much time at the end of the day of working, cooking, and doing various errands to read a great deal. How Matt and Will said that you shouldn't be in charge of decisions and you're not intelligent if you don't read was surprising, especially with the conviction in which it was said. A lot of the show is about bringing people up and emphasizing how traveling or trying the tasting menu at French Laundry (basically having leisure and money, they're related) are not what makes a person a cultured/better person, so that was perhaps disappointing or I don't understand yet.

Null_null

Most people choose to not read, whether they know it or not. I know it sounds bootstrappy, but it's true. Just look at your screen time on your phone or the hours you log watching bad TV. And when you perpetuate this notion that, "actually, reading is a leisure activity only for the rich," you're doing textbook Capitalist Realism (jkjk, but not really). I'm not being judgmental either. I myself am a lazy piece of shit when it comes to reading, and I've been trying to read at a more regular clip lately (not meeting my own low standard on a weekly basis). Putting up a wall, though, and being like "it's actually impossible for me and people should be nicer about it," is self-defeating nonsense and it's bullshit. It's good to tell people "You can read. Do it." It's not condescending. It's not classist. It's not ableist.

Wes Clark

zap’s voodoo chips are unmatched

JD Nonce

I also live in Osaka, where is this dojo??

JD Nonce

Amazing, just looked it up and only a 24 minute train ride from my apartment. If the guy who asked that question sees this, hit me up and let’s go

etienne

sry i kinda deleted my other response because i couldn't really find out to what extent Kentaro is involved with it or if he just like attended. but gambatte

Michael Keith

My ancestor Harvey Keith was a Scott responsible for the death of more English than any other Scott in history. I fucking love salt and vinegar chips

THEKILLERWHALE

Sorry Steven. The guy who posed that question has already been karate chopped in the throat and is breathing out his last through a broken larynx.

Chantz

The old writers actually died in an upstate nursing home thanks to Cuomo, fun fact.

justdave

damn thats crazy dog

Chantz

Yeah my cousin works at the one that killed all the writers so he told me, he said it was really unsettling when Cuomo himself came in to check that enough old people were dying and was like "yeah we're doin numbers alright" really scary stuff

Jennifer Reft

Re crime: agree that the much of media coverage is driven a lot by the lack of political vision, i.e. both parties say the same thing. And it's true that to have the strongest effect on crime it a massive upheaval of society would be required. But it's not true that nothing could be done by politicians NOW. Specifically, authorities (especially local) could focus on making housing (and transportation) free or as cheap as possible. I swear to you if a city spend the vast majority of its resources focused on HOUSING all its inhabitants you would see a drop in crime.

Jonathan G

Appreciate the response :)

colin muller

dear chapo, i just discovered the us's space force website (https://www.spaceforce.mil) and i want to encourage you to visit. It's hilarious it's like a fucking geocities page, and you can see the cool space uniforms and everything don't miss out

Poppy Chulo

How does that even relate to my post?

Ryan Ford

you tried the Cajun Crawtator

Phm07

I want some recommendations for funny SVU episodes

etienne

see also Surface Detail by Iain Banks

justdave

wait, your tellin me that the governments killin people, and at the highest levels of power a need to balance profit, and cutting loses is basically a leger of human lives? *shakes out ludicrously long pleather trench coat*

Michael Landreth

“Identity”—Season 6, episode 12. A twins episode with a twist Felix doesn’t mention. Here, two twins are implicated in a murder, a teen boy and teen girl. Don’t want to spoil too much, but the big reveal is that one of the twins has been re-sexed at birth by a doctor for the apparent purpose of studying nature vs. nurture in two genetically identical human specimens. Oh, and the twins develop their own grammatically coherent, perfectly conjugated private language, which Dr. Wong suggests is a surprisingly common phenomenon among twins. All of that is pretty hilarious if you think about it for more than 30 seconds. Great episode.

blackFFillip

it’s cool that you like this, I just don’t understand anything he’s saying

blackFFillip

the only plausible answer is that they know it’s bullshit and they’re doing that to amuse themselves

blackFFillip

the soft palate damage is part of the experience, I seek it out

blackFFillip

because he meant it in earnest

Michael Coutts

That last discussion about college/education perfectly explains the difference between Carl Sagan and Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

Shane

Maybe try not getting drunk on the first date.

Shane

Chapo go on @inthechipswithbarry

Alexandr

"Maybe try not getting drunk on the first date." Lmao listen to this nerd. What kinda fun you must be on a fucking date.

Adam Hurst

It was fun hearing Matt advocate for basically the exact same kind of national service program I've thought about for years at the end there

Kyle Petty

Yeah if you've listened to any of their thoughts on Bernie, the New Deal, or especially Matt's Kushvlog that's part of the frustration with the time we are in with reactionary politics. The material benefits of socialism apply to all workers/middle/lower class. It's because of how words and symbols are weighted by American propaganda that when someone hears "socialism" they associate it with the ideological meaning we've given it, instead of what that materially will do for us in reality. I think there was a real thought that Bernie would've resonated with some traditional Repubs or moderates because of what that platform could've offered.

Michael Janes

I agree 100% on the take about STEM weirdos needing to read and engage with the arts more. But by the same token I am always disappointed when I see people who are just completely incurious about anything science or math-y.
