I would like to echo the remarks of Dr. Harry Sidebottom. Xi Jinpenis

Declan Kennedy

Regarding AUKUS, we're not super happy about becoming the largest US military base on the planet either. The thaw in relations between us and China was mostly a result of the government which signed the original agreement, and greatly enjoyed talking shit about China for domestic reasons, losing the last election. The new government has been a lot more chilled out, so the trade war is relaxing too. The Chinese reaction to the details of the agreement so far has been dry. They were briefed this week, and one of their officials asked whether these nuclear subs were going to be used for "sightseeing" which was a pretty funny line if you ask me.

Nah man, I think the dude really laughs like that

That drone, like the many Afghani children it killed, had such a long life ahead of it.

To me the really striking thing about the Iran-Saudi thaw is the degree that it signals the Saudis genuinely creating distance with the U.S. One of the underrated stories of the Ukraine war has been how many erstwhile U.S. allies outside of Europe have declined to follow the American line on sanctions/diplomacy with Russia, which notably includes both Israel and the Saudis to varying degrees. While KSA refusing to increase petro output to help Biden domestically could be chalked up to personal pique by MBS, de-escalating with Iran cuts at the heart of U.S.-Saudi relations. There's no need for a security arrangement if there's no one KSA needs securing from.

Sam

100%. Amazing that point hasn’t been discussed once here.

Hugh

Fuck you Chapo. In Australia we have regional security issues (emus) you couldn’t begin to imagine. We need those subs.

O K! I love you!

Will Australia share its smoko related technologies as part of the sub deal?

Declan Kennedy

Chapo treats Australia's foreign policy like we're Steve Irwin harassing a nearby animal/country for the pleasure of a largely American audience. Which, now that I think about it, is pretty accurate.

Dan

It's great that Russia has their own Blackwater.

Sam Schick

He’s not wrong, the jokes are gross oversimplifications but they’re essentially true. America has a long and storied history of unilateral invasions of countries, bolstered by outright lies from government officials that are parroted by the news media. Hearing Americans wonder to themselves how russian citizens could let their country do that has been the most entertaining part of this tragedy. Irony is wasted on the stupid.

Tim N.

Nuclear subs and the Great Emu war.... oh the humanity!

Andrew Cross

launching nukes from an Aussie submarine because someone dared the captain to do it or else he’s a ‘softcock pooftah’

K H

In otherwords, an agreement was brokered once the main factor wasn't the U.S. acting as an immediate impediment stoking tensions and incentivizing conflict for one side. I'm sure the U.S. will do nothing to sabatoge this treatise.

K H

Chapo jokes about getting Chinese money, but that might start to be a very dangerous bit as U.S. power is revealed to be increasingly feeble. I would not be surprised if the stance on China sympathetic pods mirrors that on weather balloons. I also don't see how selling nuclear subs isn't a massive step backwards against nuclear proliferation to one of the few countries that might just be dumber than the U.S. At some point they will equip them to use nuclear weapons because no one else has a navy that warrants a bunch of submarines anymore. The U.S. is really on course to get a lot of people killed and if Chapo is sticking around they may want to consider a new base of operations outside the U.S. to somewhere with less fucked vibes.

Is it just me, or is the Australian Nuke deal just the US trying to make Australia the most likely target for a strike on the 5 Eyes Nations rather than say San Diego? Just a thought.

William

He’s just reading western media, don’t judge too harshly

William

What’s happening in the Ukraine is actually very easy to understand: whatever the western media says about Russia is actually true about Ukraine. Also, don’t get mad at Chapo and Derek- they’re not military bloggers so there’s no reason they’d know the intricacies of the current situation

William

Nah it’s fine

Doug Cartel

the Russians invaded Ukraine with somewhere around 180,000 soldiers, and UK claims they suffered 200,000 casualties *before* the russians mobilized another 300k (which only started going to the front in January). Russia knows NATO wants them to bleed out so they are just sitting back blasting everything with artillery. Ukrainian soldiers in Bakhmut describe small fire teams of Russians doing force recon for artillery, or at least that's how they describe russian tactics to the Kyiv Independent. Western press still yammers about human waves because their entire understanding of russian history comes from Enemy At The Gates. (Also because that's what Ukrainian press tells them.) I'm never going to believe a western source that claims that's what's happening. If Russia is defending a thousand mile front line with human wave attacks against an army 5 times larger than their own, the Ukrainians should have been in Moscow by now. Yeah yeah "u sound like a putin bot" don't care. NATO are the shit heads in this war. More to the point the math just doesn't make sense and I hate western press. (No I'm not mad at chapo and yes this topic makes me schizo)

Doug Cartel

There's a joke somewhere in there about the Russian media being that '2 soyjacks pointing at thing' but I don't know javascript so I cant make it

Of course

The latest installment of Chapo Scandalizes the Lib. It's my whole schtick when I'm with friends, so I'm happy to get tips from the masters of the genre.

Satcomdaemon

I don't know. This discounts my theory that the US is backing the good side in a war as a sick troll to all the haters or just made an error.

Doug Cartel

I hate to yammer on about this but this war drives me nuts because over and over I see guys with totenkopf unit patches and swastikas on their vehicles and the western press just completely ignores it They fucking drive right in front of the cameras waving that shit and it's like I'm the only one who sees it or something Obviously its exactly what CNN banks on, is that if they dont say anything then the people who point it out look like the weirdos, but knowing that doesnt make it less irritating

vic

For the love of god guys, please look up how to pronounce Xi

Jonathan Szerszen

Jesus christ are guys ill-informed on ukraine. None of this is remotely true. The Russians whole playbook is bleeding ukraine white with artillery. This guy must just be listening to ukraine sourcing. Human wave attacks is not at all how the Russian military operates. This kind of conversation is stupid and dangerous as it continues to get us closer to a nuclear showdown

Of course

Jinping XI, son of Malcolm X. It's happening. All going according to plan.

J.P. McD.

lol “dangerous” for Mr. Chapo to have the wrong opinion in a conversation

Well, at least Derek thinks this show is still funny…

Remember when they were on the vaccine train too?

Look at the Rybar map the war has been a strategic stalemate for both sides for almost a year.

Sam Zeng

Bro they been grinding it out in Bakhmut for almost a year the sector is only a few km wide it doesn't matter. Google Battle of the Dnieper or Dnieper–Carpathian offensive if you want to see what a successful strategic offensive looks like.

etienne

russia weebs when the front moved 37 meters west

Damen Irving

China helping the Philippines fight Maoist rebels is one of those things that really confirms history remains totally dead.

Sam Zeng

Gaining a few hundred meters a days is success? Believe what you want to believe I guess.

Saga

The thawing relations between China and Australia are largely because Scott Morrison isn't Prime Minister anymore. It'll be years before we untangle the shitfuckery that man caused. We're jot too thrilled about the submarine deal either - we had to renege on a deal with France to take the US subs, and it seems like yet another target being painted on our backs. Also, Will really seems to hate Australians, or is this just a joke going over my head? Either way, I'm subbing whether he likes it or not.

Dan

I mean, didn't China support Mobutu and Pinochet over the Maoist movements in their respective countries in the 1970's? Say what you will about the USSR, but the Soviet Union generally didn't throw pro-Soviet parties worldwide under the bus for realpolitik like China did.

Dan

The show is funny, but I think Derek is on Nitrous Oxide.

T

Remember Felix? He’s back! In pog form!

C. Andrew

The reaper drone scene Will described was so crystal clear in my head, can't wait to see that in 2027. Movie mindset, indeed. Also, fighter jocks are THE archetype for doing something reckless so I believe it could have been a Su-27 pilot saying "check out this drift" before accidentally causing an international incident because he wanted to show off.

K H

Especially when you factor in being Russian. Top Gun but told through Russian dashcam.

K H

I'm not making threats? Look at the hysteria around Facebook memes and the fact a missile was launched at MULTIPLE balloons. They have thrown people in Gitmo for less. It will only get worse as the powerless seek out more token acts of authority through petty cruelty. Leading up to the 30 years war they hung a dead guy to make a point. What point, to who and did it matter? No one has even done anything to us yet.

K H

Let NYT headquarters go first then.

K H

She him?

Poppy Chulo

You're just mad because it means less cock for you. We're just bros helping our other bros bust in peace.

K H

Armies are kind of shitty as Felix noted. Invasions seem ineffective unless you supplant the native population. Ukraine will be given just enough to let the conflict drag out. No one is winning except the people selling guns and gas to Europe.

Poppy Chulo

What are your sources? Even third party military analysis says that bakhmut has degenerated into a battle of attrition with the Kremlin holding on to artillery rounds and using numbers to pressure the front.

Poppy Chulo

The problem is the Russians are short on many things and that includes artillery munitions.

pod accoster

I don’t understand how Derek’s conclusion is that Bakhmut is more of a meat grinder for Russia than Ukraine. His general assessment holds that Russia has the artillery advantage. Anecdotally, you have recent interviews in west-backed Kyiv papers that UA soldiers are suffering brutally from artillery outmatch in Bakhmut in the fight of attrition.

Laurel

I’m gay.

THEKILLERWHALE

Okay, real talk now. Why do so many people here have such well-formed opinions on the war in the Ukraine? Is this a contrarian's bete noire or is some of this coming from an honest-to-god op? Where would a normal western person gain access to accurate information? My attitude is that it is a confusing mess that I cannot understand due to inadequate information. Is this a rational person's response to this or the results of the aforementioned op muddying the waters? Why do so many people seem to know about artillery installations in the ass-end of the world?

Doug Cartel

personally this war melted my brain because I was already a war nerd and all the obnoxious memeing of the first 4 months of the war, combined with all the swastikas showing up everywhere, just made me mad so I ended up looking for more news about it. Like, I had this knot in my gut because I knew that NATO wanted this war and tried very hard to bait russia into doing this, and I knew it was the fucking maniacs in the state department who set the stage for this to happen. This stupid war never should have happened but the neocons wanted it, so they got it. So, I don't really trust the mainstream media because they kept saying the russian army would fall apart once a week for the last year. Can't really trust any sources and just kind of have to piece together a vague picture based on more than one source. Naked Capitalism had reasonable sounding critiques of the war, they would link to Moon of Alabama, and then MoA would link to Military Summary Channel on youtube, so I rely on those and try to remember that few people actually know what's really going on. I don't recommend any telegram channels unless you want to understand the opinions of people on either side of the war. Well, don't use telegram period, it sucks. edit: if you're asking why so many people know about obscure war nerd shit, I personally think there's a huge overlap between radio war nerd and cth fanbases.

chetan kadodwala

Which military analysis, Neo-con think tanks? Bakhmut is a meat grinding slaughter of conscripts.

chetan kadodwala

The Russians aren't after territory per se they are using artillery fire to massacre the Ukrainian conscripts thrown in front of their guns. It's WW1.

Arielle Curtin

Yes, and from there on YT: Andriy Martanov, Brian Berletic, Scott Ritter, and Alexander Mercouris get into the military deets without a lot of gore or war-mongering.

Friend of Pangolin

Felix definitely has a body pillow with the likeness of the Empress Sisi on it.

Global hegemony: Bad. Regional hegemony: Also bad. The fact that the Euromaidan was a CIA op doesn't invalidate the idea that the Ukrainians don't want to be invaded and ruled by the Russians

Austin Cade

We love Derek’s angel laugh don’t we folks

Arid

Something the boys didn't make clear, nuclear-powered subs and nuclear-armed subs are very different. Australia still does not have nuclear weapons

Arid

Are you reading first hand accounts? Been trying to find any for what's actually happening

Arid

That's the exact same message UA has been saying of the russians. How did you determine which one is true? I haven't been able to find many first-hand sources

Jack Ross

Anyone who understands the current state of play over bahkmut understands that it is strategically insignificant, numerous western sources have admitted this. It is the Ukrainians who value it as a symbolic salient. If and when the Ukrainians pull out of Bahkmut it will not make a large difference in this course of the war. It will still largely be in the same circumstances which is largely stalemate with the Russians making slow, grinding progress in limited sectors. Right now there are no large scale significant movements that will change this.

Alexander white

Whenever the strategy is "we'll bleed them white by attrition" you know the war is going great. 10 square km in 6 months but there can't be that many more of them, can there?

Malik Chaney

Idk if this has been mentioned by someone else but an important thing to understanding jp-sk relations, and why yoon suk-yeol and park geun-hye were happy to reimburse victims of jp forced labor regimes while Moon Jae-in isn't is that the South Korean right and the wealthiest sectors of SK society are full of Japanese collaborators and the spawn of japanese collaborators, and so there has been a concerted effort by the right to sweep the brutality of JP occupation of Korea under the rug. One of the huge scandals in the last days of Park Geun-hye's presidency before she got shitcanned was about new history textbooks for the national curriculum that greatly deemphasized the suffering of the Korean people under jp occupation

Jack Ross

Emus are a rogue, remnant arm of the stay behind networks

Jack Ross

I mean it’s literally not a secret at all pretty sure loyd Austin himself said that

Jack Ross

Bahkmut wasn’t a big town there aren’t any major natural features that would give either side a major advantage in the immediate area it doesn’t connect to any major rail nodes. It really is just a place where Zelensky has planted the flag for the time being…the vibe even seems to be western advisors would rather him pull out and reconsolidate (unironically the smart move)

AKorgar

China has had a lot of really bad foreign policy alignments in the past, oftentimes because of the Sino-Soviet Split. They backed UNITA in Angola against the Marxist MPLA, for example, despite them being aligned with the pro-apartheid forces in the region. They took the side of Cambodia against Vietnam and so on. The Maoist rebels in Afghanistan were ultra-leftists who proved to be a thorn in the side of the Soviet-backed government etc

Hudson

Australia shouldn't exist. Scrape it off the map!

Charles Schultz

Sister cities is bullshit. Stepsister cities is where the action is. All about waliking into the laundry room and finding Baltimore Maryland with her head stuck in the dryer.

Of course

Lol. Quoting the BBC on Russia, about anything. Quoting a website that announces right at the top that its goal is to own the Kremlin. There is no "independent source" on any side's losses.

Of course

The issue of "who do we trust" on Russia/Ukraine news is on the board. Here's as an idea. If both sides admit something about themselves that the other side has said as well, then that's a strong indicator of likelihood. Example: since WW1, when two states fight, most battlefield casualties come from artillery and air bombardment. Kiev and Moscow (and multiple other countries' commentators) say Russia fires 5 to 10 times more artillery shells than the Ukrainian military. So, who is likely bleeding out faster? Additionally, all sides say that Russia's capacity for replacing people and materiel is better than Kiev + NATO. And finally, the US and IMF predicted a 15-ish% reduction in Russia's GDP due to comprehensive, full-spectrum, world-historic sanctions, but now the US and IMF agree that Russia's economy will grow in 2023 but Germany is flatlining and the UK is falling apart.

bruce

Nobody is saying that jackass the problem is that the scenario was specifically created to goad Russia into this hilariously wasteful and terribly bloody war. You are never, ever the good guy if you have a part in unleashing a modern war anywhere. They are human slaughterhouses with no regard for life or dignity.

Gavin Farrell

Also I seriously doubt Russia has ever conducted a 'human wave' attack in this war. They've let armored columns and convoys stumble into ambushes and get wasted, but WW1 style human wave attacks? No way.

Gavin Farrell

Fighter pilots over England in WW2 used their wing tips to try and tip over the German V1 'buzz bombs'. Taking out a prop drone this Su-27 pilot joins a unique tradition.

Gavin Farrell

And they use it to extract rent and interest from workers.

Gavin Farrell

Something that blew my mind recently I heard is that often countries that host US bases actually PAY money to the US for the base. Are the Aussies going to be paying us for more bases in Australia? Check the fine print.

Christopher Price

That's the point dude. It's telling that the BBC's own account is about 100k lower than the UK ministry of defence, so if a biased news source is much lower than a govt official account and closer to the Russian mod accounting, then you can use that to shape your ballpark figure. It's also telling you don't really care and wanted an easy dunk, because you failed to reckon with the second source I posted. Ciao.

Christopher Price

Yeah, i think I've seen every video labeled as a human wave attack on Twitter and half of the time there aren't even any people in the vid! All of the others just show squads on patrol.

Derek Davison's take on Russia-Ukraine is less than useless. It's regurgitated Western propaganda, lazily undigested. Just the same broad talking points you get from 100% pro-war, pro-West Twitter accounts. E.g., "human wave tactics" - something that Western countries did in WWI and that no one else has done since because tactics adjusted to the invention of the machine gun. This is just something that the West wants to stereotype enemies with and is asserted without any evidence - despite the myriad of videos and photos of the war that are freely available. It relies on the idea of the same idea Chapo rightly denounces in the review of 300 - that the people of the East are hordes of mindless slaves willing to die because they're evil and not really human. Or "Bakhmut has no strategic value" - despite it sitting on the crossroads of every major highway in the region PLUS the railways. And the fact that it's in a river valley surrounded by heights - with Russian troops outflanking the city and taking the heights first, which means the valley behind the heights behind Bakhmut will soon be vulnerable. Etc. Etc. The most leftist Western brain that only runs on Western propaganda is still a Western brain.

Check out on YouTube colonel Douglas McGregor being interviewed by Judge Napolitano weekly for starters. I know, roll your eyes at judge nap, I'm a Marxist, i did the same thing but McGregor is as distinguished as it gets as a former tank commander who served in multiple administration's. And judge nap has him on weekly for analysis of what's taking place on the ground. They both want to end the forever wars and come at things from that angle.
