Trump did everything right, and they indicted him. We look at Trump’s swole legal team, we gain one challenger and lose another in the GOP primaries, look at some cool trends in the consumer electronics market, and hear a nice story about some fun-loving Rhode Islanders’ trip to Philadelphia.

I glom some bennies from a wetback dealer and snitch en route to dark town and wolf them down on my way to club zombie. I slip the brass knucks in my pocket. I had to lean on a back up horn player and skag head to find out where the would be pinko councilmen took the colored whores when he indulged in his vices. When I got that it was a quick call to hush hush magazine and after busting down the hot sheet hotels door and the flash bulbs popping chief Parker would owe me a favor.

As I recall, the story goes that Hanson and Helgeland took the book and kept almost all scenes or business that directly involved Jack Vincennes, Bud White, and Ed Exley (especially if a scene had 2 out of 3); the rest they either threw in a blender or in the trash. I'd go as far as saying, maybe it's worth a read just to get poleaxed by all the differences. I have to qualify my antipathy by admitting that Ellroy isn't really a favorite of mine, prose-wise. But I'm now back to that well for the third time - I guess I'm drawn to stuff about how the worlds he explores sustain a constant paradox of (1) an endless landscape of dirty open secrets and every imaginable sin and (2) an overarching surveillance-enforcement state that's theoretically anti-(1) but frequently perpetuates it, inhabits it, controls it, as interested parties see fit. So for me, I cringe at a lot of the writing in American Tabloid but the subject matter (mob-CIA-Kennedy-Cuba-a-go-go) is catnip.

The Bok building bums me out so much. It used to be a public vocational high school and was built in the 30s by the PWA and has that cool style that government buildings from the time period have. It's also very tall. Of course since it's in East Passyunk it can't be a public good anymore it has to be a fancy restaurant with a vegan cheese factory in the basement

Jaime Christley

No just AT, LAC and now I’m on White Jazz.

Evan Scott

The top floor/rooftop used to be a bar a while ago (when it first opened maybe?) I guess where Irwins is now and I went once with some friends (this was like 2016/7 probably). They had kept the bathrooms as they were with the old-school green tiling and stuff and it was just overwhelming bummer vibes to think about how where I was hanging out used to be a place where working class kids could learn how to do a well paying job and how it was taken and made into a playground for yuppie "makers" from NYC who couldn't afford warehouse space there anymore. I've never been back

Private equity serves an important function that supports global US dollar hegemony. For the US dollar to remain hegemonic, it cannot have domestic US industry, because that will suck money from outside of the US into the domestic economy. If US domestic industry were allowed to thrive, the US dollar could not circulate the globe and retain its hegemonic status. Private equity functions as a kind of assassin for US domestic businesses that succeed in the US domestic market. It wipes out businesses that could potentially pull money from abroad back into the US. Sure, one domestic Us company cannot make that much of a difference to US dollar hegemony, but an entire thriving domestic manufacturing industry? That would destroy the global dollar system. Private equity strangles US domestic industry in its crib.

Car dealers are getting bought up by publicly traded corporations. Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway paid $4.1 bil to acquire Van Tuyl, a large privately held dealer group. And Buffet's auto group is only about no. 9 out of the largest dealer groups in the US. These auto groups have been trying for years to reduce dealer sales and finance staff to $15 an hour Best Buy employees by using no haggle pricing, ipads and online sales. But people still want to haggle and test drive, etc. So, despite about two decades of these big companies trying everything possible to eliminate the cost of sales and finance staff, car buying pretty much remains the same. And for what it is worth, jobs at car dealers generally pay well (in good times, not so much in bad times) and are some of the few remaining middle class white collar jobs available to people who have no college education. The only reason Tesla does not want to have franchised dealers is because Tesla does not have the ability to commit to the kind of annual production schedule that a real auto manufacturer has to be able to do in order to maintain a dealer network. Tesla's production is still incredibly unreliable (both in terms of quality and quantity). The legacy manufacturers are the opposite. Their problem is that they tend to make more vehicles than the market needs (pre-pandemic--different now but is getting back to normal). The main purpose of the franchise dealer system is to shift the risk of overproduction onto the dealers.

Kyle Martin

I'm fucking embarrassed by this Philly story. We let two jabronis from Rhode Island bully us? What the hell has this city come to

The best part about Suarez is that he is like J.V. Mayor. Miami dade county has its own mayor and generally it’s the county mayor that has the bulk of the power. Suarez is just in charge of making sure the buses don’t explode and trash gets picked up. He’s like a volunteer mayor. Also, under FBI investigation…

Trump's lawyers should advise him "When asked how you plea, say Guilty, but later, when you say you thought you were saying Not Guilty, they have to throw the case out. Otherwise it's what they call Final Jeopardy."

It’s not even that interesting. The historian Taylor Branch had long meetings with Clinton in the White House that were tape recorded and Clinton kept the tapes (in a sock drawer, apparently). When Branch wrote his book based on the interviews, Judicial Watch sued for the tapes, saying they fell under the Presidential Records Act, and lost.

Pennsylvania does have something Rhode Island doesn't: a city with more than 200,000 thousand people in it. Sometimes I forget RI is a state tbh.

C. Andrew

When I read that headline about Philly I assumed it was the Philadelphians berating and being mean to those out of towner hayseeds. A REAL lifelong Philly person would have spit in that croissant and gave it to that guy with a smile.

etienne

really reminded me of the "Hey man wanna grab lunch. We’re going to this taco place called Floofys. All the tacos are like $9 and they suck dick. Theres a bunch of neon signs everywhere that say Be A Messy Bitch and Me Gusta Tequila. a racist gay couple from Vermont owns it. It used to be a womens shelter" tweet

Jaime Christley

No I get it, Rhode Island's the size of a Honda Civic. That's what makes their swagged out corruption and iniquity so much more remarkable. Take the 2nd smallest state: Delaware. Fake. Speed traps and credit card companies. Produced Joe Biden. That's it.

The fucked up thing is that like, this is kind of the best outcome for buildings like this. The school district has a lot of old buildings in terrible repair (even not so old buildings filled with tons of asbestos, still!) and just really doesn't have enough money to update them for modern use (most of our schools don't even have air conditioning and it gets pretty fucking hot and humid here now). The buildings tend to get sold off because it's cheaper to build a new one and it's either tear them down, or have a private developer with deeper pockets turn them into what happened here or condos/apartments, as happened to west philly high school. West philly high school still has tons of issues now even though it's been converted, apparently it's miserable to live there.

etienne

oh yeah I know. I'm seeing it happen a lot IRL. People want to have the building kept historically as-is on the outside because it makes them feel good inside but the building was held in almost abandon conditions for half a century and needs overhauls that are basically guaranteed to be more expensive than a new build. The only answer to that puzzle is Floofy's. the other only answer to that puzzle is the one that doesn't get talked about a lot, a clean demolition into a surface parking lot. People in general get way less sentimental about a legacy building getting demolished for parking than they are against a condo conversion

C. Andrew

RI is infinitely more memorable than Delaware. My crank opinion is that Philadelphia needs to seize Wilmington, and then PA lay siege to the rest.

J P 3

Yes and no. The size of public markets is $124 trillion. Private equity is approximately $10 trillion. At a more fundamental level though, dollar dominance is both a byproduct and a cause of global trade imbalances. e.g. if the U.S. instituted capital controls and restricted flows of dollars into and out of the U.S., financial services would shrink (a much larger category than private equity), domestic producers might see a more favorable climate, and workers would likely see an increase in bargaining power in the U.S. The influence of the American state would also decrease globally (for better and worse). On the other hand, countries that rely on trade surpluses for economic growth, including large producers in China and Germany would get crunched, and the global economy as a whole would probably enter into a depression. Alternatively, if the Chinese and the European domestic markets were re-structured to give workers more bargaining power, higher wages, and greater purchasing power, the role of the dollar would diminish, and the U.S. economy would be able to support more domestic production. If China removed capital controls and instituted stronger legal protections for business interests, more people would trade in the renminbi. If Germany and the EU were willing to tolerate higher deficits, that would also reduce the role of the USD. However, right now China is unwilling and unable to restructure its economy in this way for domestic political reasons. It's a similar story with Germany and the EU. There are winners and losers right now within countries and between countries. Private equity is one of the winners, but in a rank of the top 10, not sure it would even make the list.

J P 3

In fairness to George Clinton, he is also 81 years old. Granted Willie Nelson is 90.

I live in a small midwest town of about 16k people. We have a summer festival with music and such. A few years ago the Spin Doctors played there and another year Blues Traveler played there.
