We’re joined by Justin Comer and Evan Jones of the Rock Hard Caucus podcast for their on-the-ground report from this year’s Iowa State Fair. Over the course of two days, Justin & Evan endured the brutal heat and hog stench of the Des Moines fairgrounds to see Mike Pence, Francis Suarez, Vivek Ramaswamy, Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis, Marianne Williamson, RFK Jr. and more, all live and in the flesh. We get their takes on the Iowa political scene, what candidates can convincingly appear to be regular humans, and which of these freaks are worth paying attention to, if any.

Vanguard has single handedly lowered the cost of investing for regular people. The reason they own so much is because they sell really cheap index funds. Granted, any investment firm perpetuates capitalism but as long as we’re in it, they are a net positive force. What do you think they do that is “bad”?

What you described is precisely why they're bad. If you told me "Wow this company made a product which makes gambling easier than ever for poor people" I wouldn't think that's a good thing. We all gotta get that bag or whatever, not worth litigating if you should or shouldn't invest, but make no mistake that more people investing means more skin in the game. You're leveraging your own skin against the behemoth of capital, and hell, maybe you'll get lucky. They're selling the image that YOU the AVERAGE JOE can be an investor, too, and become a millionaire when in reality, at best, maybe you'll be scrounging enough together to retire. At worst, Vanguard will take its fees while capital takes your money, with no promise of a return. That's vile.

Unfortunately, yes, there are millions just trying to survive but teachers, nurses, union workers, and many others have money in pensions, 403bs, or 401ks that are better off because of lower investing fees. I think it’s ok to say that.

I think maybe some of us are confusing investing with trading (i.e. options trading, day trading, swing trading etc). My advice for the latter is, Don't Do That. It's not a rational activity, and as the old saying goes, the market can remain irrational longer than you can stay solvent.

Community polling belies the narrative it’s comprised of teenagers. More than a third are 30 and older. 18 and under has been steadily decreasing for years. You’re right about intended audiences, though. The trap house audience is comprised of those who are through the door; Hasan’s intention is to crack that door open, or at least show folks it exists. It’s heartening to see some change in this community’s attitude. If you’re inclined, or bored, check out the responses to Hasan’s two appearances on Chapo in years past. Perhaps things have changed considerably.

The only thing that bothers me is this narrative I hear from a lot of politicians and pundits (both right and left, though not Chapo directly) that blames these large fund companies for increased “wokeness” or other ills. It bothers me not because I have sympathy for Vanguard, but because someone like RFKJ uses it to distract from who is actually to blame (politicians and the big businesses / wealthy that direct them).

My idea for breaking up Blackrock and the other real estate behemoths is for the government to seize all the property they bought up and turn it into public housing.
