On the dog habits, I grew up in rural Austria. My neighbours were an old couple living in a 180 year old house, right on the edge to the woods, with a big garden. They had for generation, even their parents before had three dogs a longhaired German Shepard always named „Frido“ a Great Dane always named „Greif“ and a great Münsterländer named „Faust“. I had a very similar college experience trying to get into politics. I was a part of my schools public policy program and worked on a number of campaigns but ultimately had to drop out from that bc it self selects for wealthy kids whos parents can pay their way. The slow realization about how many of my good liberal coworkers were lizards was one of the things that pushed me more leftward.

As much as I’ve liked this podcast over the years, they’ve alway been friendly to the democrats. Sure they criticize the dems sometimes, but I won’t forget them tucking tail after Bernie lost. I'll trade a story-- I taught High School in San Lorenzo, California for over 20 years (it's just south of Oakland, very diverse racially) and one year when I had to supervise graduation, our really out-of-it 95 year old school board member attended & commented to us, "There sure are a lot of Orientals at this school!" We were all pretty appalled. Even moreso a couple years later when her 99 year old husband died so she married his 98 year old brother. (Full disclosure, they were Mormon so maybe that's "normal".)

What's wrong with a two-pronged approach, or hedging your bets? Should we just ignore reality completely while waiting for capitalism to implode? You can still advocate for a revolution while at the same time trying to ameliorate your current situation as best you can. Just because Democrats aren't ever going to kill capitalism doesn't mean we can't at least try to get them to not support genocide, to not put kids in cages at the border, to give Muslims in state and local legislatures more of a voice, etc.

Thank you for writing a good response here, and I appreciate your perspective. I think we're far past the stage where ameliorating ourselves to the political class has any hope of making things better for people on the ground. Politicians are too engrossed in their roles as capital brokers for those kinds of gestures to change anything in a substantive way. Even if that were a route that could eventually prove effective, our current convergence of crises doesn't afford us that kind of time. It's a noble pursuit, but I think the only possibility the left has of moving social discourse forward is through acknowledging that the political class has refused to do its job on virtually every level, and that we will no longer condone that as a populace.

Yes, I listened to the whole episode. I really didn't hear an interesting or worthwhile perspective in it, aside from some stuff I didn't know about Delaware's tax code. It felt like she was constantly reminding herself "Wait, I'm NOT excited to be from the same state as Joe Biden," while fumbling through a set of acceptable deviations from party talking points.
