yay! just started this series and i love it

The Children of Jack Acid

Goddam it why am I awake at 5:48 a.m.? The Chapo history episode is nice, though.

etienne

if you liked this one strongly recommend Matt Christman guesting on Radio War Nerd episode 315 to talk about ur-socialist German immigrants who had the correct idea about slavery way before most other belligerents

Budget Hireling

Genuinely one of the best American history podcasts I've listened through. Done it multiple times, always get something new out of it. Matt's great insights, Chris's amazing editing and color, plus the chemistry of the Chapo history corps.... I know I'm fangirling here, but just really want to thank you guys for the fantastic content.

Dropping it right before the holiday...solid, Chris, many thanks to you and the extended family

The Steel Harvest

hell yea, Kansas on Chapo and its not about people making voters suppression strategies. hell yea

KyleMSherry

Chris and Matt’s commentary on how Lincoln evolved his views on slavery during the war is among the best stuff the show has ever produced. Great work, gentlemen.

Nick Nunez

It’s free real estate

Can't believe they forgot to mention the Vampires that Lincoln killed

Graham Mattox

can anyone tell me what the song that plays briefly at 34:45 is?

Mark Schneider

Hard to believe the 2 of you like Ken Burns!! The shit lib who made an entire documentary about how "We meant well" while slaughtering 2.5 million Vietnamese "gooks". He's a reactionary piece of dung, burnishing the Empire's reputation.

Jack Cotting

“Nettleton” aka “Come thou fount of every blessing”. I felt compelled to look it up before I saw your comment, very catchy tune.

Graham Mattox

I knew i recognized it from sufjan's version

chapotraphouse

a) what can I say, he's an effective filmmaker, especially for making history pre-motion picture feel "alive" while still relying on real images & primary sources and (b) yes absolutely about vietnam, he's better the further back in time we go. I especially enjoy his Prohibition series and "The West", which he didn't actually direct, but was produced in his style under his production company

Mark Schneider

I used to share his movies on Jazz & the Blues with my high school students. His aesthetic values I agree, Chris, are overall solid. He's also good with finding archive video, of course, but not fit to shine the shoes of (2 time Chapo guest) Adam Curtis, I think we'd also agree. & yes, I'm a lot older than y'all (a dreaded Boomer) so having seen friends' older brothers come home from 'Nam, I never for a minute believed that "We meant well" shite!!

Bella DeBall

yeah the dude turned a picture slideshow featuring celebrity voiceovers, simulated battle sounds, and old timey music behind it into arguably one of the most influential documentaries there's ever been.

No Relation to Henry

I didn’t know Franklin Pierce didn’t swear in on a Bible. I remember learning somewhere that John Quincy Adams didn’t because to him it went against the separation of church and state. I think about that sometimes when Christian nationalists invoke the founding fathers (although he was a founding son, TBF).

"hacks, appointees, and Democrats." the more things change... damn.

Garth Hansen

On a fourth relisten or so...any news on Matt's status? Hope he's doing well

Marxist-Swoletarianist

Extremely late and probably won’t be seen, but can anyone tell what song is playing under Matt when he’s discussing the Gettysburg Address at 1:08:00?

The Children of Jack Acid

He appeared at the end of one of their live events recently and said like one line to close out the night. So he must be well on his way to rehabilitation!

Marxist-Swoletarianist

Hey if you completely disregard Burns’ libshit politics he’s got some pretty good visuals and music in his docs. Seems like the boys have a soft spot for him too with the amount of music they adapted from that playlist.
