I'm pretty sure the Israel ai thing is just more hasbara that can also hedge against accountability. Because ai models that can be rigorously tested are badly flawed when put into the real world. Israel has no way to know if their ai modelling is correct in leading to the death of freedom fighters in any quantifiable way. Episode 3 specifically hits on how the painting of objects was tied to trade, wealth and prestige (during the period of the Dutch East Indian Company and Dutch colonialism). So yeah, like Will pointed out the Dutch contributed to art, but it could be argued that their contribution (as they rolled around in untold colonial wealth and had to spend that wealth on something) just reified objects and self-flattery in place of god and religion.

Amber sounds exactly how she does on the podcast, so it's like a solo podcast of Amber talking about her life, but better written than a podcast. I understand Chapo's general skepticism around what may or may not be a lot of useful marketing for Silicon Valley vis a vis all the AI hype/doomerism we've been getting bombarded with over the last year. However, as Marxists, it's kinda shocking to me how unconcerned they seem about the whole thing. There does seem to be a very real chance that sophisticated enough AI models could further solidify the iron grip the owner class currently has on basically all the means of production. At some point, it literally just becomes slave labor for the price of the compute power on a server. Billionaires (and possibly the emerging trillionaire class) could pass some kind of UBI package that is specifically calculated so that people will have just enough to survive while simultaneously ensuring they'll never have adequate enough access to the resources necessary to actually shift the balance of power in any meaningful way. It's how we end up with Blade Runner irl. Idk - just strikes me as uncharacteristically shallow thinking from the guys on this issue.

I'm not talking about AGI though. I only mentioned "sophisticated enough AI models" and I would argue that ChatGPT (and many other AI models starting to get exposure out there) are highly sophisticated and they are quite good at what they do. I'm more concerned about the market incentives to develop models that are specifically tailored to be good at certain kinds of labor based skills. Especially when paired with specialized robotics hardware. I'd argue there's not even a very big market incentive to develop AGI. But industry sensing an opportunity to get 90% or more people off their payroll in the next decade or two? Now that's something worth their time and energy. Just like they fought to normalize trade relations with Chine in order to access cheaper labor markets. It's the exact same forcing function of capitalism exerting itself. Setting the bar at AGI because it's easy to argue against its feasibility and then saying there's no cause for concern when it comes to anything below that arbitrary threshold is pretty shortsighted imo

Eh - I guess it's a matter of semantics then. When I hear AGI, I'm thinking of full on sentience/consciousness. Or at least something very close to that. Weak or narrow AI could still be incredibly effective at accomplishing specific tasks without achieving AGI status. And there's no reason to strive for AGI in most labor applications. Why do I need my AI powered apple harvesting drone to have consciousness? I don't. I just need it to be good at rapidly identifying ripe apples and have appropriate enough spatial awareness and dexterity to quickly pick them.
