Hello! I hope you've had a nice week.

Today's release is a little bit different (and pretty big!): I have a full collection of new character sprites in a modern-chibi-pokémon style, with the full four-directional walk animations.

There's eight males and eight females, for a total of 16 characters.

I know that your ongoing projects don't need new characters in a totally different style, but I hope that these might spark some imagination for you.

And if you don't need 'em right now, it'll be a nice collection we have access to in our asset library.

Notably, these will fit nicely with the Omega Modern tiles (and probably a good fit for the new X-Modern set), even though they'd clash with the character sprites from that set. Imo these chars with those tiles could be a nice little combo for a small-scope modern jam project... I have ideas...

Anyways, here's the downloads:

Modern Chibi Characters - 8 Boys - 100% (16x16)

Modern Chibi Characters - 8 Girls - 100% (16x16)

Modern Chibi Characters - 8 Boys - 200% (RMVX/Ace)

Modern Chibi Characters - 8 Girls - 200% (RMVX/Ace)

Modern Chibi Characters - 8 Boys - 300% (RMMV/MZ)

Modern Chibi Characters - 8 Girls - 300% (RMMV/MZ)

------

If you want to build your own characters in this style, here's the base that I made for them:

(in 100% no-zoom so you can paste it into a working file, right click and copy directly)

Note that it doesn't have animation because with this small scale it's more efficient to animate the full character after using the base only to design the idles.

I hope these are useful for you.

These sprites have an interesting little story to them.

I mentioned at the beginning of this month/year that I'm feeling a strong pull to help and teach upcoming artists and devs.

Last year, some pixel-artists (who also sell on itch) decided to work together to put out a bundle with a single style. I thought the "asset alliance" was a fantastic idea, especially if a consistent style-guide would be a way to help up-and-coming artists by helping them improve their craft.

(I'll admit it: after doing this for so long, I have a bit of the "guildmaster" mentality (to elevate the artform (pixel art and indie games generally) as a whole) and some of the assets out there, makes me wanna want tell the young'ns to improve their quality before publishing 🙊)

I gave some input with stylistic stuff early on (like this character base, and some color palette advice). I wanted to do more, but then I got too busy (since now I'm fighting to make time for my own rpg project too!) and couldn't contribute much.

When I checked back in a couple weeks ago, I was impressed: they did a lot with it, and took it in their own direction, it's now a solid base for any pokémon-style game. But of course... I noticed that they didn't have characters!

I got the impression that nobody wanted to step on anyone else's toes by trying to establish the character style.

Me, I got big feet, so I started stompin'. 🤣

I jammed these sixteen characters in the past couple days, the idea that it'll give a momentum boost to the alliance project. And it's a good-sized drop to add to the patron library, so well worth the time.

I might end up releasing them on itch.io. I would like to make these a freebie, but then I don't think it can be bundled with the others, so idk.

As of now I do not plan on making more characters in this style (unless there's suddenly a lot of requests for them from patrons!)

These sprites are meant to be a standalone mini-pack that other people will hopefully build onto.

Okay, that's it for now, and it looks like this is the last one of the month.

These guys were a bit of a distraction from the usual schedule, and a lot of the stuff over the past few weeks was general UI and HUD icons, so I owe you some spicy releases in the TF&E style.

So I plan to dive deep into the requests (including my backlist!) for next month. 💪 Huzzah!

I'll be back over the weekend with the end-of-month as usual, and then I'll see you next Monday with the request thread for February.

See you soon.

Thanks!

I snapped the monster sprites up when Clockwork Raven mentioned joining it a few months back. Loved the idea, but they haven't gone any further with it (at least as far as I know from public information). Got me re-energized on my project, though! So, I'm glad to see another potential contribution. It's an awesome idea. Love the sprites here, and since my game is nearing the point where the coding is solid enough, I'm gonna have to give these a go to see if I like this aesthetic more than the current Time Elements characters I'm prototyping with. Keep it up!
