I have a fun one for today's BONUS APRIL FOOLS release: 😱

I wasn't done with these controller input icons! It's time to expand them even further. I've overloaded these icons with animation-states, for on/off buttons AND well as 8-directional movement input.

And here's something very cool:

These icons are playable! I put together a very cool input example that shows off the icons. It's interactive and will respond to your gamepad and mouse!

*for me the gamepad didn't work for web. might be a browser error, could work for you.

I hope this little interactive demo gives you some inspiration!

Note: I coded this thing in GM, because this demo evolved out of a refactor of the menu-control system for my own game (my own logic, no AI 😊: because I'm a learn-by-doing kinda guy, and my project really needed a machete to the spaghetti).

It's been a rewarding the past few days working on this, and it turned out to be the perfect showcase for these icon sets.

My original idea for the April Fools joke:

I wanted to export the Game Maker package with these icons and scripts (and share it only as the GM package 🤪 : I always joke about how Godot became really popular after I've spent so much time learning to use GM, and I might be the only person around here who uses GM).

Would have shared the icon sheets next week anyways, but I think it woulda been a funny prank.

But alas! I didn't get this thing finished in time, it's too messy to release as a package (maybe in the future if there's any interest).

So today's post isn't really a prank, but a wholesome April 1 bonus asset: 😊

I do have the direct icon sheets for today's downloads:

They some handy animation setups. Check out this reference:

There's a few download sheets: These are arranged as 100%-sized tile-sheets, with a couple different layouts. They are general add-ons, and they follow a 16x16 grid layout, so you can take whichever sheet is easiest for you to extract the frames for use any engine or project.

First is the 8-dir-frame strips for the directional arrows, which animation frames are in a specific order, representative of the numpad order. This made it really convenient (in Game Maker at least) for me to 'animate' them to match directions as in the interactive example. Hopefully that works well for you too.

The regular buttons have a 2-frame animation sheet I've exported in two different versions, hopefully so that one of these will be easy for you to work with for whatever your project needs:

2Frame Bool Input Icons (Animated Gif)

2Frame Bool Input Icons (Paired-Frames Tile Sheet)

And... that's it for today!

Enjoy your April Fools day, and have fun with these icons!

I'll be back with the new request thread later this week. Then I'm taking a little bit of extra time off for the Holiday, and we'll be back into the swing of spring the week after.

See you soon.

Happy Easter, and thanks for everything! 🙏
