Hello! Is it just me... 🥵 or is it getting hot in here? 🔥

Today's release is a brand new animated lava autotile, which includes this cool (or hot!) lava-rock terrain that works with it. These are designed for the Elements style, and inspired by the longstanding patron requests for a volcano or fire-themed dungeon biome.

Note: The above preview was made in RPG Maker, and RM's animated-tiles are limited to a specific frame count. It looks okay, though it's not quite how the lava is fully designed to work.

Here's how the animation looks with a four-frame cycle (of course the animation speed will be up to you):

If you're using RM, I'm certain there's plugins or other ways to use the four-frame version if you prefer it. Though tbh, in-game it'll look just fine this way from your player's point-of-view, and it's probably just me being picky! 😝

You can download these tiles here:

Downloads - Full Tiles:

General Tileset - 100% (16x16)

Note: The general sheet includes the full-sized autotiles, because RM uses a "half-tile" system for its autotiles (this is always annoying and causes confusion for anyone trying to use RM-formatted terrain sheets in a different engine).

Anyways, on this general sheet: you'll notice that the four-frame sequence animation for the lava tiles are arranged like this: 1-2-3-2 (middle frame repeated). For the autotiles, you'll want to animate them in the same four-frame sequence, but I didn't repeat the middle frame for the sake of space. It'll be the middle one for each autotile.

Downloads - RPG Maker:

RM Format - TileA1 - 100% (16x16)

RM Format - TileA1 - 200% (VX/Ace)

RM Format - TileA1 - 300% (MV/MZ)

Note: I have the terrain-tile wedged up there on the A1 sheet so you can use it quickly to work with; and (like any of my tile add-ons) you can also easily splice it out or copy it into any existing set. I'll most certainly be revisiting this theme in the future to expand on that texture, so for now it's included as the base-terrain so you can hold it all together.

I want to expand on these with some more tile variants (rocks in the lava, cracked floor tiles, etc... and lavafalls...?), but these took a whole time to put together (I always underestimate how annoyingly complex autotiles are!), so I'll have to revisit this idea another time, if we want a more complete biome.

In the meantime, I think that they can find a place alongside the existing Elements cave tiles, and I hope that they're useful for your game project!

See you after the weekend, I'll be back with something new on Monda for our ongoing Elements Weapons event.

Thanks for everything.

Love you!

By the way if you’re struggling with autotiles I do know of a cool resource to help speed up making all the tiles you need (no gen AI, just math): https://wareya.github.io/webtyler/

Ah thanks! Cool find. Unfortunately the problem that I'm talking about here with autotiles is more specific than that (and is during the texture-drawing process moreso than tile assemlby): RPGMaker because doesn't use the same tilesize as standard tiles so, it leads to a bunch of tedious additional work to ensure that things line up for both regular formats and for the RPGMaker version. This'll be handy for quicker testing though without needing to keep re-exporting them! Definiely bookmarking! EDIT oooh after testing this, it'll be really handy! Not for the drawing part like I said, but I underestimated this because I've seen a lot of similar tools that turned out to be not very useful. Appreciated!

I’m glad it’ll still be helpful! I’ve used it for years to complete tilesets (if I have a RPGMAKER tileset and want additional tiles for a Godot project for example)
