Hi all. On the poddy tonight we're going to be chatting about monogamy hobbying. If you could only paint one army/range/sculptor what would you choose and why?Cheers, Henry

Jon Maisey

It sounds bad but I think space marines because they are such a blank canvas, flexible for conversion, wide selection

Anton Schuster

If I would be limited to one army/range/sculptor, I probably would stop painting. I get my enjoyment from painting different characters, units, scales, etc.

Lukas Wiggering

Depends: a) one army, something flexible that offers a blank canvas, so probably space marines, b) a range, age of sigmar as it offers huge diversity, c) one sculptor, definitely lucas pina

Matt Blight

I'd go with Wood Elves as they offer different textures, skin tones, tattoos, furs, clothing and the Dryads/tree kin for bark etc. Lots to explore imho and the colour palette doesn't have to be "spring green" either. Plenty of scope for different colour schemes and I'm possibly looking at a cold autum/grey mist theme when I get my hands on the models of course!

Kieran James

Thorbjorn Barone now works for GW, I think that means we are going to get some incredible sculpts soon

Nathan Cartwright

The easy answer would be GW Space marines. For known reasons! Personally I would say GW’s imperial guard. They cross genres (military modelling / fantasy) with ease. They have no set gender like space marines. And can offer any detail challenge to paint. (Edges, cloth, metallics, flesh, NMM, weathering, grim dark) similar to space marines but slightly more grounded in relatable military set up / lore. And offer sculpts similar to military modelling and scale hobby.

Ross Tovey

If I'm limiting myself to a sculptor then it has to be Lucas Pina. His sculpts are an absolute joy to paint and you see such a variety in the way artists choose to paint them that I don't think you could get bored of seeing them either.

Tay Aroman

As anton said I don't think I'd be collecting if I didn't have the choice that there is. Being able to flit between different projects in different settings keep my hobby fresh. Perhaps AoS for it's variety as its got a bit of everything, but 40k is catching up with those new kroot. I'm a GW fan boy through and through

Josh Cable

I know plenty of people who just collect, paint and game with the GW Middle Earth range. It has its own separate group of people who love the films/books and that’s what brought them to the hobby.

Nory Proctor

I WISH I had this kind of commitment! I'm out of control! So if chose one thing, it would be NECROMUNDA or BLOOD BOWL - there's so much variance with gangs or teams, Dramatis personae and star players that I could do almost anything and everything between them and still try new styles, quick or long projects, all sorts!

Todd Wallace

How does that affect something like Historical or Gundam which has multiple sub-genres?

Mike F

I have only ever collected and played Heresy. For me it a lot of what draws me in originates from the fluff and back ground. It's the only genre that keeps me interested. It also takes me so long to build, convert and paint the models that I don't really have the time to venture elsewhere, even if it interested me. I've dabbled in others but, never long enough to make anything from it.

Jim Swales (menthel)

One army? Probably eldar as they have a massive range that can take different colour schemes and techniques or knights as you could really lavish time and effort on each one. Game system would be AoS as the minis are great and often completely different. My favourite armies are my death guard and black Templars but I couldn't only paint either of those for a lifetime, too little variety.

Robin

Sons Of Horus for me, I think there's so much variety in how you can make them look, the desaturated green/grey, the exceptionally bright turquoise/jade, a lot of different TMM and NMM options depending on the look you're going for. Outside of Warhammer or Wargaming in general, I'd love to be good enough to paint Big Child Creative busts exclusively.

Will

Kev Adams orcs exclusively because why wouldn't you choose them?

Rob Cass

Can’t say I know enough about individual sculptors and larger scale minis to have an intelligent view on that, but for gaming miniatures it would be Orks: they’re usually characterful (sometimes even funny), there’s loads of variety across both sci fi and fantasy, and they’re always fun to paint whether you’re aiming for your best work or just blasting out an army.

Paul Arnold

For armies, I think Bretonnians would be a great option as you have various textures and materials within the models, plus plenty of colour options in heraldry schemes to keep adding to your army without getting bored!

Collin Nolan

It might sound basic but I guess I would pick Space Marines. I probably prefer a few armies like Death Guard or Adepta Sororitas more but Space Marines are still great and have the clear bonus of having like 700 different units and all kinds of modeling opportunities with a ton of official chapter related bits and a near infinite amount of color scheme options.

Mitchell Winter

Wood Elves, I would do unspeakable things to get a primarch sized Orion. Hopefully The Old World brings him and the rest to my table soon

Simon Harries

Would have to be space marines, specifically Blood Angels. Boring I know but they are good sculps to paint to practice on and improve your painting, loads of scope for conversions and I love the Blood Angels lore.

@nallen_minis

As a painter not a gamer it would have to be a range of busts or 75mm for the variety and freedom. I'd pick Spiramirabilis or Karol Rudyk, but I'd go bankrupt quickly. So I think it would be Ignis Art or Neko Galaxy, so I'd go bankrupt slowly.

Elplebian

I think it’s impossible. If you’re talking hobby monogamy then I must just be a slut. GW-wise I was discussing the other day how the Eldar are pretty much the only range with an unbroken design aesthetic going back to Rogue trader. Even marines are in some ways unrecognisable across the same timescale if you compare RT Leman Russ to a New fangled Gravis chonker or nerfgun marine number 4 or whatever. So, if it was GW it’d probably be Eldar, but I couldn’t cut myself off from ‘oh that’s a nice kit/figure/bust/whatever permanently

Dan Gunn

With the upcoming Kroot release, it’d have to be Tau for me (especially as they got me into the hobby). Plenty of variety with organic and inorganic minis, you can really vary the style with them and the range is pretty well supported.

Spinachdipminiatures

I was gonna say space marines for the reasons noted by other peoples’ comments. However, after some thought, I would strap myself “ball and chain” style to Durgin Paint Forge. They have such a variety of models and I love how whimsical and creative every single sculpt is.

Adam.Gould

If I could only paint 1 range it would be Moonstone, the models are gloriously bizarre and quirky and a joy to paint.

David Moss

If I absolutely had to choose? It would have to be Eldar (dark and light), but then again, it would have to be Orks... wait, no, Space Marines! (have you seen those new Dark Angel sculpts going on pre-order? they are crazy good). So that's it! Yes! My absolutely number one choice would be Eldorkarines. Yup.

Kane Holman

Aos for me as it has currently the best range of miniatures across the system and in particular seraphon you’re not tied to a specific scheme and the model range is insane

Kieran Mclaughlin

Going to be greedy and say the Death grand alliance from AoS, the amazing character sculpts in Soulblight Gravelords, the manky horde with amazing hobby potential in Flesheater Courts, the regimented ranks for the Ossiarch and the Nighthaunt for some funky schemes!

Adam Noon

For me it'd be really close between Eldar or Orcs & Goblins. Think the O&Gs would just shade it due to the massive variety.

Ammonitemare

Cliché answer but space marines. They have a ton of subfactions that are fleshed out enough to really feel different to each other (at least to a space marine nerd like myself). Combined with how easy they are to convert there's a lot of unique projects within space marines. Even with all that, by SM army #4 and killteam #9 I think I'd start to lose it lol.

Kim Morten Nissen

Nazgob. Every day and for ever. 🫣 That sculpt is insane, and probably the best Orc sculpt ever. Don't think anyone could top that model😁

Leon

I know I'm late for the game but just to drop my thought here, I think I would go with a single army, and get every model from history, through to the future. Not least of all to satisfy the collector in me. Today, that would be Lizardmen, but another day it could've been Eldar or High Elves.
