The “proposal” by the Great Sea Serpent lingered for a while, and the limit of a year where Jake would still remain confined to the Minor World seemed to reassure all the other A-grades present, making them all back down.

Which left only one person remaining with the possibility of protesting.

“What say you, human? Do you agree, or offer an alternative that all can accept?”

Jake was honestly unsure if the Great Sea Serpent was genuinely asking Jake if he agreed, or if this was just another semi-rhetorical question that one really couldn’t say no to. He didn’t think the peak A-grade would just kill him outright if he refused, but he also had no intention of pissing him off while still not knowing what the serpent’s endgame was.

However, he also didn’t want to come off as too meek or subservient, as that would only hurt him later. There were certain lines that he would never allow to be crossed, and he sure as fuck wasn’t going to let them think that anything even vaguely reminiscent of a Soul Contract was ever going to fly.

So, after thinking for a while, Jake nodded slowly.

“One year... and I hope everyone will have wised up during that time, and won’t actively try to end the existence of this world through their ignorant actions,” Jake said in a slightly scolding tone, taking a lot of pleasure from the Lich and a few other A-grades clearly not liking being spoken to like that. But what were they gonna do with the massive Great Sea Serpent watching over the situation?

Agreeing to a year also wasn’t going to cause any problems, as Jake truthfully only had to hold on for roughly two months before he would be able to leave for the Seat of the Exalted Prima Chief Administrator event. Hopefully, he would find a way not to return to where he’d entered from through that event.

Even without the event, if given some freedom, he believed he would be able to set up a ritual circle that could help him escape through the void with Villy’s help. It was a risk that the Great Sea Serpent could somehow recognize the nature of the ritual, but sometimes one had to take risks, and the chances of that happening were quite low. The ritual to teleport through the void was too complex for even a peak A-grade to understand, and Jake still had no bloody clue how the ritual worked; he just knew how to put it down, as if tracing another person’s drawing.

Of course, these two options assumed that Jake would have to escape at all. While the Great Sea Serpent seemed to act selfishly and also intended to make use of Jake, it was still a snake, and Jake was still the Chosen of the Malefic Viper. Getting the peak A-grade fully on his side should be entirely possible... assuming he wasn’t already.

Because Jake also got the feeling that Villy could be involved in all this somehow, or at least that the Great Sea Serpent knew more about Jake’s identity than it let on. There was an undertone in its words that was a bit too respectful, even for someone wanting to make use of him. He didn’t want to read too much into that and presume things he shouldn’t, but the scenario of the peak A-grade already being an ally was certainly a possibility.

“Thus, an agreement has been reached. Over the next year, converse with those who lead, discuss possibilities, and when the time comes, let us reconvene with wisdom.”

The entire world seemed to move next as the massive body of the coiled-up snake that surrounded them shifted, its dark orange, almost brown, scales still filling Jake’s vision to all sides, making him wonder if he was even seeing the actual physical body everywhere, or just a barrier that appeared identical to scales.

“Human, as per your consent, you shall accompany me now. Do not resist, and have my reassurance that you shall emerge safely at our destination.”

In the next moments, Jake felt a pull that he knew he could resist. Yet he also knew that the only reason he could resist it was due to the Great Sea Serpent allowing him to.

Knowing there was nothing to be gained from resisting, Jake allowed himself to be whisked up as he disappeared from the entrapment of powerful A-grades and into... the belly of a massive snake?

Jake suddenly found himself within what looked like a large circular chamber entirely made of scales. Even the floor was one giant scale, with the dome-shaped ceiling naturally just as scaled.

Through his sphere, Jake quickly realized that he wasn’t actually in the physical stomach of the Great Sea Serpent, but instead some kind of internal space. Beyond the scaled walls, Jake saw only dense energy and a mixture of spatial concepts, making him believe that should he break through the wall of scales, he would likely be forcibly expelled into the real world. That was how these spaces tended to work, after all.

This “stomach” gave Jake the vibes of Sandy’s, but far inferior in concept. Sandy essentially had a collection of small Minor Worlds within their stomach, while this was far simpler. It didn’t even feel that secure, and he wouldn’t be surprised if most high-tier A-grades could relatively easily break out. Of course, to Jake, there was no way out, and he was completely and utterly trapped and at the mercy of the peak A-grade.

Right then, the voice of the serpent echoed within the chamber.

“Recover for now, and we shall speak when you are revitalized.”

Having nothing better to do and not enjoying the sensation of a damaged soul, Jake sat down and crossed his legs as he meditated to recover more quickly. Fortunately, the sacred rarity skill was quite overpowered even in B-grade, and it rapidly mended whatever damage the Horned Slayer had inflicted. Also taking into account how much harder it was for A-grades to heal themselves, the Venusian had definitely come out of this worse for wear.

Still, it would take at least a day of fully focused meditation for Jake to be back in top form, and that was a very optimistic estimate. With his eyes closed, Jake fully entered the state of meditation and severed all other sensations, also choosing to take this time to reflect on everything that had gone wrong.

It was pretty damn clear, based on how things had gone, that Jake had massively fucked up with his approach in this Minor World. Throughout, he’d believed things had gone pretty well, as everywhere he went, people were friendly and willing to work and talk with him, but now he realized that was only because they saw his usefulness. They saw him not as a person, but more like a living opportunity.

With that perspective, it made sense why they needed to somehow control this opportunity. It was far too risky to let it run free and do whatever it wanted, especially when the opportunity also posed a potential danger.

He also had to remember the kind of beings he was dealing with. All these A-grades were definitely old, at least thousands of years old, if not tens or even hundreds of thousands of years. They also lived in a world where they were close to the peak of power, and even if they could try to understand the concept of something far more powerful than themselves, they couldn’t fully, no matter how much they tried.

Also, despite what Jake said, they still saw him as just someone who’d barely made it to B-grade. From the Archweaver and partly the Shaman, it was clear that there was a culture of appreciating talent and those with potential, but it was far from the level of the rest of the multiverse. There weren’t the same norms and culture that placed limitations on how one could deal with those considered talents, either. Instead, the Venusians and Arachnecs had both shown a clear willingness to send far more powerful members of their race to cause a slaughter, even targeting those significantly weaker.

Finally, and perhaps the most important reason why Jake had fucked up... he’d relied too much on status. On his status as an Envoy that could lead them beyond the Boundary, and then later on, he’d tried to leverage his status as the Chosen of the Malefic Viper, which again hadn’t worked, as they couldn’t fully comprehend what that meant, no matter how much Jake tried to explain. Also, even if they could understand, why would they believe a newly evolved B-grade saying that he had the backing of a being capable of wiping out their entire world? It sounded almost like a childish lie in retrospect, and while they had confirmed this was the truth through the Venusian capable of telling if he lied, that only meant it was Jake’s interpretation of the truth. Not a fact.

Logic dictated that even if they killed Jake, they would have to compensate his faction to some extent, assuming they truly sought revenge. Surely, they wouldn’t simply move to wipe out an entire Minor World just because of one B-grade?

Of course, the plan had never been to kill Jake, and that had definitely seemed like an absolutely last resort. The terms they had offered were likely even considered incredibly generous from their perspective, and the price he’d had to pay was extremely low, having to only show up on a set schedule while helping bring them beyond the Boundary.

They couldn’t possibly imagine the level of offense Jake would take to what was, in their eyes, probably a very reasonable proposal. One that was even temporary. Jake would just have to help them out for a few years while getting plenty of benefits, making it all worth it for him.

But reality was that Jake would never sign anything limiting his own freedom. Especially not a Soul Contract. They could spin it however they wanted, but he would rather die than ever give up something so fundamental to his being. Even if he wanted to compromise, Jake knew, deep inside, that if he ever did so, it would compromise his entire Path and likely even mean that godhood would be out of the question for him in the future. And this was even if he ended up getting free of the contract in the future.

Jake continued to consider everything that had gone wrong and considered reaching out to Villy, but in the end decided not to. The snake god hadn’t reached out to him either, which made Jake feel more and more that the Great Sea Serpent’s appearance had something to do with Villy.

Time passed, and after roughly thirty hours, Jake had finally managed to heal his soul to an acceptable level. Full recovery would still end up taking at least another week, during which he could fight mostly normally, but overusing his boosting skill or taking more mental attacks could quickly lead to problems. Unfortunately, these kinds of small lingering soul injuries just had to heal with time, showing one of the few downsides of getting stronger.

The soul simply got harder and harder to heal, and the knowledge that the Horned Slayer would likely spend at least a few years with lingering issues did bring some comfort. Jake’s recovery speed as a B-grade was already incredible, but that was only to be expected from a sacred skill.

Opening his eyes, Jake stood up and stretched, naturally still finding himself confined. As expected, his movements instantly caught the attention of the massive serpent that had swallowed him.

“Your recovery is remarkable. Surpassing any being I have seen before.”

Jake didn’t say anything to that, despite feeling like bragging about his great meditation skill. That kind of behaviour hadn’t served him well, so he chose to only speak when he really had to.

“Wariness is healthy. Required for survival. But you have my word that you can relax. Now, would you like to return to the world outside once more?”

One thing Jake had noticed was that the Great Sea Serpent had never done anything directly related to Jake without asking permission first, perplexing him a little, but also strengthening his belief that this peak A-grade knew a lot more than he let on.

As for his response, Jake nodded in agreement, and on cue, he felt his vision shift as the massive snake spat him out.

In the next moment, Jake felt solid ground beneath his feet. He also immediately felt that the environment had undergone a massive change. Jake was standing within a cavern entirely devoid of the poisonous mist usually filling the Minor World, though that didn’t mean there were fewer toxins all around him. Far from it.

The level of toxicity was far more intense within the cavern, having improved more in quality than in quantity. What’s more, Jake felt it enter his body through his scales and was incredibly easily absorbed, Palate having a feast every single moment Jake spent there.

With a Pulse, Jake scouted his surroundings, and at first, he thought he was inside a tall, upside-down mountain or something, but soon he realized. To the sides, beyond the walls of stone, was a dense liquid that filled everything, and even with his max range, he couldn’t even begin to see the surface.

In other words, he was likely now somewhere deep beneath the ocean he’d heard so much about. A fitting den for a Great Sea Snake.

He also discovered something else as he spread his senses. Turning his head, his gaze met two orange eyes that somewhat resembled his own, though his were decidedly more bestial, while the snake’s were unsurprisingly more reptilian.

“You detected my presence, even when I did not intend for you to. A feat I would believe impossible, but with the existence of the multiverse, perhaps I should broaden my horizons significantly.”

Only a few dozen meters away was the Great Sea Serpent, now shrunk down to be less than fifty meters long, also allowing Jake to finally get a good look at the peak A-grade. Its dark orange scales looked almost bronze now, perhaps due to the natural lighting from glowing crystals lining the ceiling of the cavern, and the serpent’s body was decidedly simple.

He just looked like a big snake, not much different from a pre-system serpent, just bigger.

Having taken a moment to fully get his bearings, Jake responded as he nodded. “Every single native of this Minor World will have to if they want to survive the world beyond the Boundary.”

“Yes... indeed we will,” the Great Sea Serpent said as it looked at Jake while remaining coiled up. “But I have said enough, have I not? I can see you have questions. Ask.”

Jake did indeed have a lot of questions, but he was also reluctant to ask, as anything he did ask would inevitably reveal information that could potentially be used against him. So he really wanted to ask something that wouldn’t reveal too much. After a bit, he ended up settling on something that shouldn’t reveal too much, if anything at all.

“How did you learn of what was happening at the Boundary?” Jake asked carefully.

The Great Sea Serpent looked at him for a moment before seeming happy with his question. “Yes. That is the right question, and hopefully my answer can help alleviate your justified caution. Even if my explanation may not be satisfactory. Perhaps you’ll even find it nonsensical.”

Tyftc! Once again I’m up all night for homework… only it’s my senior capstone project that I need to do well on or I can’t graduate next year. It’s due in 4.5 hours 😣

Episode 19

Good character development Tyftc

David Vieira

Ty for chapter, a bit empty of plot tho but I guess its setting up for tomorrow cliffhanger :D

Schneeente

If that cute little orange snek didn't earn itself at least a minor blessing I'll eat my hat! Blessing, blessing, blessing!!!

Jaydan Man

This is an excellent story plot at this point in the story. As Jake gets stronger and stronger finding ways to keep him as a small fish in a big pont occasionally is great. His having new experiences where he can't power his way through and his weakness at politics can shine through is excellent. While the numbers going up is why I'm here, seeing him have challenges is the point of it all. Great writing. Having Villy save the day this time in hopes next time he learns his Villy. Damn lesson. Chefs kiss. Tftc

djthomp

I'm really curious to see exactly what Villy got up to in sending the big snake to rescue Jake. The way it phrased that last part doesn't really sound like it's something as simple as a blessing.

Staudi

Tyftc!

Michael

did Villy send him a dream?

Vega

I do wonder what Jake could have done differently in this adventure to not end up with a bad outcome, barring following Villy’s suggestion to kill and ditch at the Boundary? Exploring a world filled with A-grades who out of touch with the multiverse was always going to end up dicey. I’m really happy with the character growth Jake has had though. Also, I’ve said this before, but this snake sounds so cool!

Flurry

Good luck!

Rob Lyon

I don't think you blessed him I think he's going to let Jake do that I think he gave him a vision or something like that that's why he thinks it's kind of nonsensical. Whatever happened was so strange even the sea serpent is an entirely sure what to believe. He just knows he met something way stronger than him

Noah Mclelland

Yea it was good, but kind of repeating and explaining stuff we already know. I feel every chapter that isnt at the crux of an arc has a lot of inner dialogue or other ways to fill the chapter that isnt really needed. In saying that its good because it paces the story so its not all action, it gives a baseline for zog to really build a climax when the arc really peaks.

Xander

TFTC :) Suggested edits: "Jake was *genuinely* unsure if the Great Sea Serpent was genuinely asking Jake" repetition. Suggest changing the first to "honestly" "surprised if most high-tier *A-grade* could" should be "A-grades" "considered talents*, either, but* the Venusians" This is a clunky run on sentence. I suggest ditching the highlighted part to end one sentence after *talents* and start the next at "The" "But ** reality was that Jake would" missing word "the" "his movements ** caught the attention of the massive serpent that had swallowed him *instantly*," Move the "instantly" to before "caught" because you want to imply the attention was caught instantly not that the swallowing was instant. "the monster’s *attention* on him." repetition from earlier in the sentence. "awareness" or "consideration" perhaps. "shouldn’t *reveal too much*, if anything at all." repetitive phrasing. perhaps "be too revealing" or just clip out the bit between "reveal" and "anything"

Zach138

It was because the Great Serpent wasn't invited in the first place.

Tyftc

Josie

If he did, I hope he made the dream utterly ridiculous as a way to make fun of Jake for being dumb. and that's why the Serpent woke up angry lol

Dylan Hilliard

True, or maybe through meditation he is aware. I still think their is inherent understanding since he is a snake. But I am not sure how that looks.

definitelynotbrjenness

I halfway expected Jake to come out of meditation in a temple to villy and him surrounded by worshipping snakes.

kandiana

Tftc "and hopefully my anger can help alleviate your justified caution." - should be answer, not anger?

Rahsheem Reid

Hmmm this snake might get a few shots of Jake juice to hit S grade.

zran

me sugestion could had been...., leave the minor world and return when he's A grader, he arrogantly believed they could treat him as equal or at the very least as a person, but they did seen him as something inferior to that, as something what could help them to expand their territories, to create a individual at a higer grade, the only way to even the scales in such situation is match their power if not surpass it, so they could take him seriusly, but he was a recently b grader, so they see it as they could push him as they whanted.. especially seen how the nestmother tried to control him with her mental magic, so yeah, he heavily believed his status could keep him safe, but he downplayed the ignorance of the locals heavily

definitelynotbrjenness

Probably the safest way was to follow villy's original advice. "If it's full of a grades, leave immediately." But I doubt if many of us would have done that because we, like Jake would expect some reasonableness unless we took the time to think about El Hakan and how system people treated him when they did not know who he was.

Daniel Brian

I was fully expecting his first words to be "I greet the Chosen of the Malefic Viper."

zran

likely some kind of vision or dream, where the sea snake sees a angry malefic viper in his true form wrecking the minor world due to jake getting killed by the ignorant ones, ,such destruction sparing no one, not even the sea snake

definitelynotbrjenness

Finger on the scale...backdoor to world theory still in the running. He blessed the snake (by touching it) and is back to eating popcorn knowing he can pop in at any time if needed.

Michael mann

I get the vibe that Big Ol’ Snek has based his path around Ambushing. So likely heavy stealth skills, perception forward and using his words as traps too. Jake will likely get along really well with them! The line about “perceiving me even though I did not wish it” makes me think there’s a good amount of spacial magic alongside the concepts of being perceived. Jake could take inspiration to improve unseen hunter even further!

definitelynotbrjenness

Tomorrow cliffhanger is Jake trying to bless snake and failling. Monday we discover he is already blessed.

definitelynotbrjenness

Plus zog sneaks in things in chapters like this that become relevant / important later so he can get a chuckle out of our arguments.

Tomer Yud

Yes im also very confused

Major Casaw

So it's clear the snake isn't bless because jake would sense that. But also villy did something to get the snake there. I'm kinda sad that *something* didn't result in the meditation chamber covered in mushrooms. "I have it on good authority that mushrooms help the chosen recover faster"

I'm going to open a fitness center with nothing but those rotating wall climbing things and call it The Temple of Zog to see if anybody figures out why.

When blessing fails, Bigsnek acts angry and claims to doubt Jake's veracity. Then breaks down laughing, " sorry chosen, he made me do it."

Namorat

Probably, but their anger at what the others tried could also work?

definitelynotbrjenness

I wonder if we'll ever get a scene of young villy hanging out in a tree telling a woman, "it certainly looks delicious. If I ate fruit, I'd at least try it. Take a bite of that apple, you know you want to."

definitelynotbrjenness

Akschually.., ummm.., akschually .., dammit, I can't think of a retort. You win. My day is ruined.

Josie

once I understood that reference I laughed irl lol

Dan

Snek boi may be peaved he's not only not the strongest being anymore, but also incredibly far from even being the strongest tubular reptilian. Also saw a comment on a prior chapter about using Jake juice to help the serpent become a special variant, and that would be an amazing way to make up for his rescue

Thanks for the chappy

Villy giving weird dreams that made big snek stop by and help lol

Ryan Linus

I have a hard time understanding his logic for returning…

joker ledger

I remember jake can only detect blessing within his own rank. This one is peak A grade, maybe near S. No way jake can see if it has a blessing or not

ABTelford

Yay, great chapter! I am liking this snake! And I’m also liking Jake’s reflecting and learning - his arrogance needed tempering and it’s nice to see. 😇. Thanks for a fun read

Asher Bryant

I have a feeling that is with regular inspect, as in when he inspects others blessed by different gods. Being the Chosen of the Malefic Viper should be give him a sense for when his patron has blessed others, no?

ChRiAn

So, what are we gonna name Scarlett 2.0?

P A J

Glad to see Jake reflecting on his mistakes. Its clear to me that this sort of thing really isnt his strong suit, and while he isnt overly arrogant he has gotten a bit too used to being in a situation of power.

ChRiAn

No, Jake was able to feel the blessing of the Wyrmgod's Chosen back in Nevermore. My guess with the set up so far is that Jake will bless the sneek if it is a good boi and we get Scarlett 2.0

Alexandre8901

2 weeks ago I was pretty certain we would time skip to Prima Seat event... Now not even sure were getting there before summer time! 😅

Ben Heggem

Did we really need to blue ball the conversation for another chapter so we can go over his fuckups in his head lmao, tftc

Kota

Yeah I guess the one true lesson Jake can actually follow is not to engage with higher grades in such a situation at all. Which here would have meant never entering the Venusian village and noping the f outta this world the moment he realizes there are beings there who can just squish him like a bug.

Elijah Reitmeier

Something regarding his scale colors. Maybe Auburn? Amber? Bronzey? Ginger lol?

CallHimDan

Is it Friday already? King och cliffs

Loststar7

It’s been corrected to answer by the time I read it. 😁

Loststar7

If this is the Thursday teaser I’m mildly terrified of tomorrow’s cliff. Zog you’re an asshole. Thanks for the chapter.

Josh Strange

TL;Dr= Jake FAFO'd in the wrong place and is learning that he still sucks at diplomacy. He went back because Jake is a man of his word. Quite literally, it's part of his Path. He said he'd be back after finding out if he could help anyone leave the boundary. He was also trying to show them that he had no intention of screwing them over. Unfortunately for Jake he has gotten way too used to being treated like a Chosen, and he was in the literal one place in the multiverse where his title meant absolutely nothing to the natives. Yeah, they kinda realized he's definitely stronger than someone of his same level or possibly a genius, but to them he's "just" a B-grade.

Lemonsqueezy

Zog you just confirmed so many of my predictions/assumptions and answered quite a few questions I had. The only few remaining are "What did Villy do? Will/is a blessing involved? What is the plan moving forward?" and finally "what overpowered xp or skill is Jake about to get?"

Josh Strange

Thanks for the chapter Zog! I'm really loving the change of pace. It's been a while since we've seen Jake so thoroughly out of his depth. Can't wait to see how this is gonna impact the System Event, since he's learning diplomacy here. Hopefully that helps him learn to be better and more cautious. I'm pretty sure the Exhaulted Prima Event is definitively more diplomatic as apposed to combative, if the first interaction with it is anything to go off of.

Lemonsqueezy

We did get a lot of things answered in this chapter. We can only hope that tomorrow the rest of what we want to know is told, but I got a bad feeling tomorrow is going to be something completely unrelated to Jake. Like a POV of one of the other characters in the first phase of SoTEP.

Josh Strange

I vote Auburn! It's an actual name, but fits Jake's horrible naming talent. 🤣

Lemonsqueezy

Only Thursday. So we can only hope he releases a chapter tomorrow considering that he said he is really busy with his move.

doctordirt

Yeah it for sure needed more than the why not justification that jake gave in that chapter. I don't see any reason jake would want to go back in and continue doing boring diplomacy.

Lemonsqueezy

We had to have at least something for Jake to test out his new evolution to B-Grade. Quite a bit more involved that I thought it would be that is for sure.

Lemonsqueezy

Jormungandr, like the Norse myth. Can call him Jorgie for short.

doctordirt

He has to write every chapter with a cliffhanger ending my biggest complaint about the series.

John Kornegay

I say again, I hope we revisit Venus much later to kick the shit out of that horny toad.

Colin

🤭

Lemonsqueezy

Another way to teach Jake humility and the way of the multiverse he now lives in. Pretty much Zog doing some character building and having his MC learn lessons.

Colin

I greet Daniel Brain. 🙇 (Yea, but for real- same. Maybe tomorrow.)

Ryan Linus

Thank you! Didn’t realize he gave his word, that absolutely makes sense.

Lemonsqueezy

Yeah I saw that too. IMO I do not think it is possible due to the significant difference in power between Jake and this peak A-Grade. His primal origin skill is super overpowered, but I believe it is still limited to what he can do as a B-Grade. Not saying it wouldn't help the Serpent evolve, but that it might only be an insignificant drop in the bucket of what would be required to make it a variant. He had a lot of issues when he did it before for creatures that are his grade.

Lemonsqueezy

I never even thought about equating Villy to the story of Adam and Eve, but it definitely would be something Villy would do to mess with someone.

Lemonsqueezy

Common BR, you knew that the one eye thing was a stretch. Would make it a Snakeclopse.

Lemonsqueezy

I think there are levels to the inspect skill. Jake could just look at race and level, or go further to see blessing as well. The later requiring more effort to do. If that is the case Jake wouldn't have a reason to check for a blessing because he would assume that no one on the minor world would have one. There is also the case of differences in grades. Jake couldn't even see the level of the serpent, so I don't see why he would be able to see a blessing. There are skills that let them hide details from inspect, and can even make the details be false, and the greater the power difference the easier it is to hide/falsify those details . I could be completely wrong as well, after 1300+ chapters some of the details get forgotten.

NovaZero

Nah wait... Fuck. It's Jake. Goldy probably.

Lemonsqueezy

It goes back to Jake being able to detect Eversmile at Nevermore even though no one else could, not even other Primordials. Perception is the best stat after all. The ambushing skill of the serpent does make sense because in general snakes are ambush predators. However, I think it would be quite difficult to ambush something when you are the length of an entire planet, but it did say he could shrink down to only a measly 50 meters (sarcasm). So he went from world size to the size of a blue whale or wing span of a Boeing 787.

Lemonsqueezy

Nah, Zog needs the suspense and I am sure Villy wants to keep the secret for as long as he can to mess with Jake.

Lemonsqueezy

I still do not think that Jake could do much to influence the peak A-Grade. The difference in power is just too great. Even if Jake gave everything he had it would pale in comparison to what would be required to help. Grade evolutions are exponential.

Michael mann

I fully believe that they could be the same size as Jake if they wished, polymorph is a broken skill! I wonder if the records have bled through to shape this snake to have essences like Jormungander? But one things for sure, Snakes like Jake 😂

Josie

This cave probably has awesome acoustics. I bet the Serpent has a secret for whiling away the hours 🐍🎤🎶

Lemonsqueezy

Jake's original intention, I believe, was to go to Venus and explore, do some killing, and leave. He then met the Frogs got comfortable, met the Arachnecs and Snakes and got more comfortable, then he got cocky and that is where he fucked up. As much of a loner that Zog described Jake as being in the beginning, the dude definitely turned out to be too friendly and trusting of others. If Jake stuck to his original plan he would have been better off, even afterwards if he took Villy's advice and got the fuck out of there until he was an A-Grade or at least peak B-grade he would have also been okay. In the end he should have never returned. Jake has often been incredibly naive.

Lemonsqueezy

Oooh, I forgot about the whole dream thing Villy can do. That is definitely a good way that Villy could have communicated with the serpent to save Jake. The other way is either the inherited connection because of it being a serpent, or a blessing. I really like your hypothesis though.

Lemonsqueezy

Lol, that would be funny and definitely a Villy thing to do.

Sayjinlord

Hopefully at peak B grade or early A grade so Jake can get a level or 2 out of it.

Kevin Watson

this is just about how i expected this to go. i wonder what exactly happened that the serpent would fear is “nonsensical,” it has to be something to do with Villy or Jake’s blessing no? tftc

Lemonsqueezy

I see it as a way for Jake to be taught humility and the way the multiverse works. Character development, while sometimes boring, is important to keeping your readers coming back for more. However, when it those reflections take several chapters (like I have seen in other LitRPGs I have read, looking at you DoTF), then it just gets too mundane and reads like filler to fatten up story length.

Lemonsqueezy

Good luck bud. I am up most days applying for jobs during government hiring freezes and levels of uncertainty. It isn't the same, but it is the closest I can come to relating to your predicament.

Tom Castle

Don’t think humility is the right word here, more like he needs to think about the board and who he is up against. aka teaching him to be more level headed/less reckless.

UNKNOWN

His name is Serpy

Lemonsqueezy

The best guess I have seen are that Villy sent the snake a dream or vison of what was to come if Jake was killed. The snake wouldn't understand who Villy was, what the multiverse is, or what being a Chosen means. To the snake it would be nonsensical because it just wouldn't fit with what the snake knows or experienced. It would just seem over-the-top to suddenly be given information that said that he isn't even close to being all-powerful, and that even though Jake is a new B-Grade he is one of the most important beings in the multiverse and his death or harm would mean their end and they would not be able to do a damn thing about it.

Lemonsqueezy

Yeah, I am pretty sure that dude is not long for this world. Jake likes to hold a grudge.

Lemonsqueezy

I think it is going to be a mixed bag of several elements. All the things that would be required of someone to be the leader of an entire universe/government/kingdom. Logistics, laws, war, diplomacy, punishment and well-being of subordinates.

Lemonsqueezy

It keeps you coming back every day for the next chapter though.

definitelynotbrjenness

Lemon, i'm surprised to hear you say that after the post you made on Reddit saying, "Zog is from Denmark. They aren't real Norse and he probably doesn't know about Jormungandr." heeheee. i'm a bad person. shrug.

Lemonsqueezy

Got to remember though, Jake loves to tac on a "Y" or "IE" to every creature he gives a name. He even did it to Villastromoz by calling him Villy.

Lemonsqueezy

Humility fits IMO. This arc taught Jake that there are times where he will experience beings that do not know or care about how important he is. However, what you said is also true.

Lemonsqueezy

Christian/Jewish bible story about the first human's eating the apple from the tree and being kicked out of the Garden of Eden. Supposedly a snake convinced Eve to eat the apple. I am not religious so that is the extent of my knowledge of it.

Alex Lane

I'd like if the scene about Villy getting involved was a misdirect

Alex Lane

And the big snake just liked his vibes.

Mrburns93

These creatures and even this world is going to open up eventually. Jake wanted good relationships with them. He had good intentions. I just hope they dont survive their inevitable ruin

Lemonsqueezy

According to the wiki: "In the Primal Hunter series, the Wyrmgod's Chosen is a dragon known as Silverstorm (or the Dragon of the Silverstorm Fissure). "

Lemonsqueezy

Probably could, but he would have no concept until now of what a human or enlightened species is. I could definitely see the Snake doing something like that in the future to explore the Order or even Earth. Probably mimicking what Villy looks like.

Adam Taylor

Want, was the gender ever confirmed for great snake? Snek in love is my parlay bet

Ben Heggem

I’ll be back either way😂half this chapter was filler to make it a cliff hang

definitelynotbrjenness

Jorgie was was claimed by someone the other day, i'd consider it a top contender.

Manowar

I think it is as simple indeed as Villy blessing the snake and contacting him somehow, which, to the serpent, seems crazy stuff.

Jeryd Greer

The pronoun He was used several times in the last couple chapters.

Adam Taylor

Damn, thanks. Need to put more into my reading comprehension stat

definitelynotbrjenness

it would have been set up differently, but it would be funny if this backfired on villy too and bigsnek thought he could get a higher blessing by killing jake.

definitelynotbrjenness

the undead lich contacted Casper in the tutorial and told him how to do that ritual to become undead. So I still think villy can contact Bigsnek.

definitelynotbrjenness

bigsnek: I've recently been introduced to karaoke. care to join me in a song...don't tell my heart, my achey, breaky..." jaje: villy! what have you done?

Rewdan

Where can I sign up?

Rewdan

Cheers Zogarth I absolutely love what you’re writing

definitelynotbrjenness

not the worst thing that could be done to a story. i'm seriously considering working in a mysterious ability called "incremental" and see how far I can go before someone realizes that every time the mc finds loot it gives exactly 1 stat point more then his previous equipment.

JW Saxby

Excellent 🐍👍🏼 Tftc 🍻

Carl Never

That would be a hillarous end to the story

definitelynotbrjenness

not the end, just a temporary set back that has jake doing some quick talking and villy trying to get bigsnek's attention.

definitelynotbrjenness

oh, i'm sorry great ancestors. when you went on and on about what a dumbass your chosen is, I thought you wanted him removed. villy and jake: you were just messing with us, weren't you? bigsnek, suddenly concerned: did I go to far?

Fylbrom

So Villy did shenanigans with his records in all snakes to 'nudge' the big guy over to the boundary. The big snake complies but obviously questions what exactly that nudge was. When he arrives at the boundary he senses Villy's power in Jake and is prolly just as in the dark as Jake with this whole thing. I imagine Jake will end up blessing the big guy but maybe he turns it down for some reason? The other A Grades were not happy with the idea of being subservient in the multiverse, so maybe its not different for the Snake. Either way, tomorrow's cliff hanger is gonna suck major balls...

Phallusar

I'd say this is running a bit long but Zogarth still sounds salty about people who didn't like how long Nevermore was.

Fylbrom

Also, it would be a great basis for him to give the idea of having one of those du geon floors in Nevermoor be a minor world with the same premise of not knowing about anything higher. We kind of got that with the dragon trying to reach Godhood but its taken to the extreme here in Venus and ended up almost being worst case scenario. It would be interesting to see how minaga/wyrmgod would play off this... exerience.

Fylbrom

If anything, jake blesses the Snake and that opens a new paths for him. We are always hearing about how when they get a blessing its an influx of new records. And with this world not having Divinity, those records are new.

definitelynotbrjenness

in January, when Sandie meets Bigsnek, they immediately get into a contest to see who can make themselves bigger.

CT

Snake getting a blessing that feels certain. It would be hilarious if the snake asked for a name from Jake and him going "not this shit again" :D

CT

and Sandy bragging about bigsnek not having Tom.

Samuel Jones

I'm actually hoping that it's Miranda who eventually lays down the law in this minor world; I know it's a bit out of character, but we totally gotta get some insult spewing frog rain

Samuel Jones

Yes, Sylphie, it did in fact get a lot smellier; I'd venture to say it rivals the smelly pot

dithering

The frog is peak A grade and a decent variant, Jake won't be able to fight it till he's late tier A grade or atleast mid tier

Jason Donovan

Is Zog that cold-blooded to drone on about Miranda’s admin duties and leave us hanging tomorrow? Lol.

John Kornegay

Agreed, I’d prefer he wait until he can just stomp him into the ground. Ya know, something demoralizing, like break his horns off and beat him with them.

Jason Donovan

He went back bc he reeeeally wants to hunt one of those BogLords.

ZanSanCho

Eh, haters gonna hate. I thought evermore was a fine length. Especially considering we skipped a few decades

Peter Smith

No worse. The snake got a quest from villy to earn both a blessing and a gift.

Matthew Thompson

Anyone else kinda wish for a spin off series focusing on the Sword Saint or Carmen???

Daniel

I hate Carmen. I be ok if she is killed off.

Matthew Thompson

What no way the rune maiden...come on its like the multiverse version of letti.

Matthew Thompson

Ohhh That would be kinda to much on the nose....like too easy but billy having a back up plan makes sense

ABTelford

I also dislike Carmen as a pov character, but she acts as a good foil against Jake, showing he’s more than a battle junkie like she is. And I have to say I love Zogarth giving the role of a battle junkie to a woman! The feminist in me loves it!

Matthew Thompson

Okay wow. So I actually love Carmen...must be the kid in me who grew up watching Xena warrior princess back when it was a brand new TV show lol but why do you all hate her. I mean come on. That's like saying you hate cute little head sitting hawks too. Or hating giant space eating space worms.

DefinitelyNotMinaga

Tom is Tom so yeah Sandy wins! And next chap Big D Snek will say something like: so no shit there I was chillin...and suddenly I get whisked away somewhere dark and offered something called a "beer"?

DefinitelyNotMinaga

I would 100% provide a light show for THAT free of charge!

DefinitelyNotMinaga

Big D Snek is perhaps blessed by Danger Noodle? ON THE NEXT EPISODE OF VIPER BALL B(grade)!!

Sayjinlord

Give him the old Doomfoot treatment.

beeve

Good character but would not want to read a spin off.. would rather read a different series

beeve

I think this arc is worth the length

beeve

Chapters could be a little longer but gotta respect the new house/move l… zog might need to consolidate all of these a bit into a few couple less chapters for the books/audio books

Alex

Jesus dude. Nevermore wasn't even that long even more if you consider what it's about. People just like to bitch

Alex

Oi zog. Loving this tftc can't wait to see what happens

Chloe

Well you see, I was dreaming and this Snake god said look in on you. Nonsense right? Tyftc

karl Mckellar

Hey anyone else on archer Patreon got this chapter released on 11/12th of may
