Miranda was slow to react as the sudden attack had come seemingly entirely out of the blue. He hadn’t given off the slightest killing intent, and even as he unleashed his attack, his facial expression remained neutral.

Despite her too-slow reaction, Miranda managed to teleport backward, as Holstred was far faster, and successfully blocked the initial blow. Lillian and the wyvern weren’t as lucky, though, as both were struck hard, spewing blood into the air as the sole C-grade of their group lost his arm, and Lillian had her entire chest region cut up.

A ritual circle appeared beneath Miranda as she prepared to unleash a counterattack, but suddenly, William retracted all his metal strings and just stood there as Holstred’s sword hit him across the chest, sending the metal mage flying backward and into one of the indestructible walls of the space station.

Miranda took the chance to surround the mage with a sphere of mana, ready to unleash an attack of her own as she yelled.

“What the hell are you doing!?”

His actions made no sense at all. He’d attacked, only to not follow up, but instead allowed himself to be struck by Holstred. It was utterly nonsensical.

The metal mage slowly stood back up as blood dripped from his mouth and onto the floor.

“That confirms it,” he muttered, looking up at the group. “This isn’t real.”

Miranda’s movement immediately stopped as her eyes opened wide. “You mean... this is a simulation?”

“Yeah,” William slowly nodded. “And I believe I’m a simulation. So is everyone else besides you.”

“Do you have any proof?” Holstred asked, not having let down his guard or lowered his blade.

“Nothing besides the circumstantial,” William shook his head. “The circumstances make no sense, and every prior stage has been part of a simulation. However, I do believe you can prove it to yourself. Feel how the concepts behind your attacks feel slightly off, and especially take note that we appear unable to improve our understanding or power in any way. Our current states are set, because we cannot gain more Records as simulations.”

“Is that how you figured it out?” the wyvern asked, a new arm already rapidly regenerating, and the beast seemingly not at all offended after suddenly being attacked.

“No, I just felt that my karmic connections with everyone felt off,” William shook his head. “Usually, merely being in proximity with one another altered karmic relations, with this effect being more pronounced when conversing and spending time together. Yet the connections between everyone here remained entirely unaltered. The only one who seemed to have the slightest shift in her karmic bonds was Ms. Wells, leading me to conclude she’s the only one here who isn't a simulation. My earlier attack should have caused a drastic shift in our karmic connections, yet the only change was, once more, with Miranda. So while I don’t have any physical proof, I’m entirely confident everyone besides her are simulacrums.”

“You mean to say the system purposefully made a flawed simulation, and the purpose of this stage is to realize we are in a simulation?” Miranda asked, “Or, I guess if I’m the only real person here, I’m supposed to realize I’m in one.”

“I don’t feel like a simulacrum,” the wyvern muttered as he closed his eyes for a moment. “But I do agree, something is amiss. I cannot meditate on a certain natural treasure I’ve absorbed, which I was able to do even within the second and third stages. So something is definitely different about me.”

Lillian, who was pretty hurt, had finally managed to recover somewhat as she sat on the floor. “So if we’re all simulations and she’s real…”

“I assume all of us are in separate simulations with our actual selves, undergoing identical tests,” William shrugged.

Miranda listened and slowly nodded, finding herself somewhat convinced, though a small fragment of doubt still lingered. “I want to perform some more tests to confirm the truthfulness of your words.”

“Feel free to,” William nodded. “I believe you would have figured it out even without me here, given the ten days available to do so. As for me... my true self will see you on the other side. I do hope you won’t have any animosity due to the actions of this simulacrum.”

Without any further warning, William summoned his metal strings once more, making them whip around his own body before they proceeded to cut him up into dozens of pieces, killing him instantly.

The other four stood there and stared at the metal mage who had just killed himself in a perhaps unnecessarily gruesome way.

“So we have to kill ourselves or what?” the wyvern asked, not seeming very keen on the idea.

Miranda didn’t answer as she just stood there for a bit. William had seemed so utterly convinced this was indeed a simulation that he was willing to kill himself. If not, he would have truly just died.

Within the simulated stages, one couldn’t truly die... and the system had said that the Administrator Test would take place within a simulation...

That’s when Miranda realized something. She had assumed that whenever they were teleported by the metal platform into the Tutorial and, later, into the world with the Unnamed City, they were entering a simulated world. However, what if they’d been inside it from the very moment they were summoned to the Seat of the Exalted Prima?

The more Miranda thought this, the more she convinced herself.

“If that’s what we need to do, then I’m more than willing to take the gamble and-“ Holstred started saying, but he didn’t get further as Miranda’s gaze shifted.

She blinked, and rather than standing in the bloody hallway, she found herself in a garden, with stars shining down through the glass bubble overhead, giving the entire hemisphere an ethereal glow.

“Welcome to the Administrator’s Terrace,” she heard a familiar voice from off to the side as she saw William sitting relaxed on a stone, reading a book.

“I take it you’ve been waiting for a while?” Miranda asked, after getting her bearings and now believing she was finally back in reality. She also wasn’t surprised, seeing that William had managed to break out of the simulation before she had, given that he was effectively the one who broke Miranda out of hers.

“Not that long,” William politely responded, closing his book and putting it away. “You were also rather fast. It only took you a few hours, with ten whole days available.”

“Only because your simulacrum realized something was off,” Miranda sighed, shaking her head. “And given that I would expect the others to arrive shortly.”

“Oh,” William muttered as he was in thought for a couple of seconds. “It may actually take a while. Even if my simulacrum realizes something is off, it won’t dare take action right away. I would guess the only reason it did in your simulation was that it recognized you as the only real existence. If it were me, which the simulacrums are, I would need a lot more certainty before daring to take action against you.”

“That’s a little comforting, I guess,” Miranda said, not sure if he was being truthful or wanted to reassure her. Either way, the actions of his simulacrum would prove whether his words were true or not. Perhaps another hidden benefit of this system event. “Say, have you just been sitting here waiting?”

“I have,” William nodded. “I’m fairly sure we’re supposed to head over there, but I assume you will need to be the one going there first.”

William pointed toward a faint beam of light at the other end of the hemisphere, looking almost like an objective marker from some video game.

“That does sound accurate,” Miranda said with a light smile. The objective of the final stage wasn’t merely to enter the Administrator’s Terrace, but to claim her role within it. “Rather than waiting around, let’s head over there now and see if there’s more to this stage than breaking out of the simulation.”

Miranda didn’t believe there would be, but seeing as their destination was only a couple of hundred meters away, it would be truly foolish to sit around and wait, only to learn that they weren’t fully done with the Administrator Test yet.

The metal mage nodded and stood up as Miranda started walking toward the light beam. The two of them quickly got there and saw a simple wooden gazebo right under the light beam. When Miranda saw it, she noticed that the beam covered the entire gazebo, prompting her to turn to William.

“Hey, try to enter,” she asked him, mostly to satisfy her own curiosity and confirm something.

“Alright,” William nodded as he walked over to the faint beam of light. When he reached out to touch the light, his hand stopped, making the metal mage shake his head. “As you probably guessed, I can’t enter.”

“Good to confirm,” Miranda nodded as she also walked over, and upon reaching out, her hand faded through the light effortlessly, allowing her to enter the gazebo. William, who stood just outside, also suddenly had his hand phase through right after she entered, confirming it was a requirement for the Administrator Candidate to go through first.

Inside the gazebo was a single table with small open boxes lined up on it. Each of the boxes contained a single ring that looked similar to the one she’d seen Jake with, though this one appeared far less complex.

It wasn’t hard to figure out what to do next as Miranda picked up one of the rings. As she did, a system message appeared, marking the true end of the Administrator Test.

Congratulations, you’ve passed the final stage of the Administrator Test. You have been successfully promoted to Administrator of the Seat of the Exalted Prima.

Rewards: Administrator’s Seal of the Exalted Prima (Epic). Participation in the Chief Administrator Selection.

Using Identify on her new ring, she confirmed it was a much lesser version of Jake’s mythical rarity ring. This one still gave some stats, but its primary function was that it could teleport her back to the Seat of the Exalted Prima.

“Well, that’s it,” Miranda said, looking at William. “You should also take a ring and become an Administrator.”

William stared at the boxes hesitantly, as he looked conflicted. “I’m not sure I should. I have no intention to compete with you or Lord Thayne for the Chief Administrator role, and even if the two of you somehow don’t end up with the title, there are others the role would fit better.”

“Oh, I know,” Miranda nodded, not wanting to hand William more organizational power than necessary either. “However, we don’t know the nature of the Chief Administrator Selection. If it’s a vote or something where each Administrator can take the role of supporting another, it would be beneficial for us to have as many Administrators on our side as possible.”

Miranda didn’t believe anyone in the Milky Way Galaxy would be foolish enough to compete with Jake, but she still felt the need to consider the option. There were also some slightly unknown factors, such as Kindroth already being an Administrator. It was a bit of an open secret that his god, and thus Kindroth himself, had a connection with the Holy Church, and the Church had proven itself very bold in the past. Again, she didn’t believe he would try something, but preferred his current role of working with the Milky Way’s leadership. That didn’t change the fact that he led the most populated planet in the galaxy and had a lot of pull when he really wanted to, though.

Compared to him, William felt like a safer option, even if he probably shouldn’t, given his substantial personal power and former connection with the Primordial of karma. A connection Miranda didn’t believe could ever be perfectly severed, as there was no way a Primordial would simply give up and forget about someone he’d invested quite a bit into as a research subject.

“Alright,” William agreed with a sigh as he also took a ring, becoming the second Administrator promoted that day, jumping straight past the Candidate stage.

With rings in hand, the two of them went outside the gazebo, with Miranda taking out a set of chairs and a small garden table. The atmosphere was nice, and Miranda had nothing against waiting there for their three other party members to arrive.

However, the next person they saw was not a member of their party. A human walked towards the gazebo and naturally spotted Miranda and William, who were not trying to hide themselves. She recognized this person as one of the higher-ups of Valhal in the Milky Way Galaxy and gave him a nod. The poor guy looked rather nervous as he went in and took a ring.

Six more people ended up appearing before any of Miranda’s party members made their way to the gazebo. From what she gathered, they came from three separate groups, and all of them were people who were already considered part of her “camp.”

The eighth person to arrive was Lillian, and to Miranda’s surprise, it wasn’t even William who had been the primary reason for her realizing something was wrong. She’d detected that things felt off herself, and once she voiced her thoughts, William had come out in agreement, helping Lillian confirm to herself that it was indeed all a simulation.

When it came to the wyvern and Holstred, William was the primary reason they realized something was off, but it sounded like they had started to suspect things themselves after about a day and a half in the simulation. In other words, their group of five had all successfully passed the final stage of the Administrator Test with a nice eight days remaining.

Eight days that Miranda would spend menacingly sitting right outside the gazebo, taking note of every single person who became an Administrator, while also making damn sure they knew that she knew.

Better safe than sorry when it came to the Chief Administrator Selection, which was what truly mattered. Ideally, these hundred days with the Administrator Test would end up being a complete waste of time besides any gains from the experience itself, as Jake ended up being the one selected anyway.

But unfortunately, things often didn't go ideally.

--

“I’ve been called back by the Malefic One,” Jake said to the Great Sea Serpent whom he’d invited into his cave. He motioned to his surroundings, making the ritual circle give off a faint glow. “In my absence, you are to defend this circle, as its destruction would be an inconvenience.”

The peak A-grade nodded in acknowledgment as he carefully inspected the ritual circle, something Jake had hoped the snake would do. It would help sell Jake’s competency as there was no fucking way the Great Sea Serpent could understand head or tail of the damn thing. Jake had no idea how it worked; he had just followed the blueprint to the letter.

“Truly a marvelous creation,” the serpent said, full of admiration. “If you are required elsewhere, would I have the honor of escorting you past the Boundary? I will warn you, though. I have detected several of the major forces keeping track of my location, including the Bog Lord, who appears to have been informed of your presence.”

“That’s of no concern,” Jake said, shaking his head. “This magic circle will allow me to travel directly beyond the Boundary in a fashion entirely undetectable to the natives of this world. Since no one has dared look inside the cavern during these last few months, they will simply assume I’m still here if neither of us leaves.”

“I see. Truly, our ignorance knows no bounds. The power of the Malefic One is truly beyond comprehension, which is why this may be presumptuous of me, but could I be witness to the activation of the ritual?” the Great Sea Serpent asked, striking Jake as very nervous.

“Very well,” Jake simply agreed, knowing the snake wouldn’t get much out of it. “Also, regarding your promise of bringing me to meet the other factions again within a year, I’ll try to think of a solution.“

“Pay it no mind, I shall address that situation when the time comes,” the peak A-grade said, seemingly not even thinking about it as a real problem.

“I’ll think about the matter nonetheless,” Jake said as he raised a hand in a theatrical manner. “May we meet again.”

“If and when the Malefic One wills it, so we shall,” the Great Sea Serpent answered, slithering back as Jake activated the teleportation circle.

A faint connection was established that Villy took hold of, and through his power, Jake was whisked through the void and back to the Order of the Malefic Viper, where his final preparations for the Chief Administrator Selection would take place.

That, and what would come after. Because once the Milky Way’s Seat of the Exalted Prima had been claimed, it was time to look towards the other myriad galaxies of the ninety-third universe that had their own Seats.

Good luck moving. You're going to need a ton. Moving sucks.

Icewolf

I did not expect moving houses to be this Friday cliffhanger

Mr.Spooks

Congratulations on the new house! Moving sucks but its usually worth it in my experience.

Bluejay

Thanks for the chapter.

Savage_A

Congrats on your new home

Michael Fannon

A very, very long time ago I predicted that Jake would spend a significant amount of B-grade taking over his galaxy. I was obviously wrong. Jake is starting to take over the universe in B-grade and I'm all for it.

KenW2077

Congratulations on the house.

Platnum

TFTC and congrats Zog! Hope you enjoy your new place!

J

Have fun Zoggy and good luck hopefully you don't get done dirty like I did with this contractor.

Nexas Aurelias

Lets goo! So excited for this next arc

Stormy

Tftc and congrats on the new home

Corvid

*Miranda sips some tea and turns a page* "SHE'S JUST SITTING THERE. STARING. MENACINGLY." -everyone else

KatHabit

I hope the new house is awesome! I hate moving. Tftc!!

Corvid

Also, as an added note, William just nopeing himself out of existence because he thinks he's a simulation is one of the greatest displays of both BDE and weaponized nihilism I've read about. Ever.

djthomp

William always has been a bit extra. Good luck with the move.

Author Azraeil

Thanks for the chapter mate, moving sucks but I'm sure the new house will more than make up for it.

Fylbrom

Enjoy your move Zog! Honestly perfect timing. It's a good place to stack some chapters i think. Maybe I'll go re-read something and come back in a few weeks.

Darshar Griffonmane

I like how William has grown over this series and he now fulfills his role as "background character". And man, the b-grade arc on this seat is going to be epic, Jake is going to have so many good fights! Grats on the new house, survive the move, enjoy the home! tyftc

ZMVPJ

Going on a break not in the middle of an epic fight or chapter 5 of 10 what is this and what have you done with zogarth???

Blake N.

“You’ve been warned. Now enjoy the chapter” for some reason this felt like a threat

Staudi

Tyftc!

Kevin Hargett

I saw someone talking about this love. And while I understand, I’m super selfish about my chappys. I hope you’re able to get settled in well! Congrats on moving!

Gracie

tftc 🧙💍

Steven Tuttle

Congratulations on the new home tftc .

Kota

Now I'm curious how a failure for the event's intermediate stages would look (other than every party member dying). Or if that was even a possibility; might be the real challenge was just surviving, which would be extremely difficult if you try to interfere with the Unnamed City but trivial if you just stay away.

Daniel Francis

Good Luck with the move. Its always a stressful time so don't worry about writing until comfortable.

Eastbound monk

Where can we subscribe to these announcements?

C0bra$

Thank u for the story

Tomer Yud

weird test but ok

Xander

TFTC :) Everyone enjoy your weekends and we will hold survivor support group meetings on Discord to help us all through the coming weeks of chapter release turmoil :) Suggested edits: "Usually, *mere* being in proximity" should be "merely" "that looked *slightly familiar* to the one she’d seen Jake with" wording is off here. Ditch the "slightly" and change "familiar" to "similar"

DaMule

TFTC Z! Have “fun” moving

Rewdan

Thanks Zogarth for a great weeks reading. I hope all goes to plan with the move.

Rewdan

William still gives me the creeps

Rewdan

I’d not like to cross her in any way. I’d be like what’s her favourite chocolate and have that on bulk order.

Rewdan

And a no Friday cliffhanger. I had to check what day it was.

InfernoDroid

Tftc, since chapters will be sporadic, I'll probably just wait a few weeks and binge whatever is managed to be written

zran

nah, not weird, it is clear is intended as a test of perception, likely modeled after the one on top of the milky way galaxy leadership and perception supremacist, aka jake

T

I would like to subscribe to Zogarth house facts

ABTelford

Great chapter, thanks! And good luck with the move. Moving houses is great and awful at the same time. Hang in there man!

Morazain

Who loves Friday foreshadowing, raise your hands o/.

Josie

Bye for now, Venus 👋. Can't wait for the day you realize your folly 😊

Jeff McCulley

“that looked slightly familiar to the one” >similar

Zizawah

Would love a house tour! And of the gym! Or the garden. Have an uneventful and mostly stress free move!!! And as always thank you for all your hard work and creativity!

Jeff McCulley

It may be that the first two stages were just there to get participants acclimated to simulations, and what to expect from them.

Dan

William MVP! Imagine how powerful he'd be right now if Eversmile didn't neuter him so early. Hope he's able to fully repair his Path one day. Congrats on the house Zog!

Jax

That would require him revealing a lot more about himself than he would like. Zogarth is a very private person, I'd say man but I'm not even 100% sure he's a man.

Carl Never

Great chapter hope you get to break in the house soon

Carl Never

I watched him give an interview once as a velociraptor so pretty sure hes a guy

Terence Myers

I wonder if anyone does all the tests, arrives at the terrace and then see her watching and just decides not to become an administrator, just out of fear. I will say its a good thing her and William were the first. Long range and short-long range fighter just in case something would happen.

Alex

Congrats on the new place zog. Hope it's awesome

Loststar7

Great chapter and a fantastic end to the week. Best of luck with the new digs Zog. Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

Vega

Congratulations on the new house, hope the renovations go smoothly! And thanks for the chapter, I’m really excited for the Exalted Seat of the Prima arc

joel southard

Thank you for the chapter. Hope the move goes well.

Anonymous

yay! I was right. Also congrats on your new house Zog.

Jason Scott

Congrats on the House man. Being all grown up and stuff. Now comes all the real adult bills lol.

Colin

Wooooo congrats on the new house! Alchemy lab in the basement?

Zizawah

Yes, I hope Zogarth got a good nest for you and your parents too!

Raymond Whitehead

Take the time you need to get the move done, we will be here. And congrats on the house

Zizawah

Well, Zogarth could do a tour behind the camera so we don’t see his face. :P

Tessa King

If he/she was a velociraptor how could you be sure?

Zizawah

Um, from his voice.

JW Saxby

Glad that William is still on Team Jake 👍🏼 kinda odd tha he calls him Lord Thayne like the people who aren’t close to him though. Not that I’d call them close but the people who do call Jake “Lord Thayne” are usually doing it out of either respect or reverence or both and I reckon William feels more shame with a mix of slight appreciation after discovering emotions and then trying to deal with them. Idk 🤷🏻‍♂️ Anyways, cool news about the new house Zog 👍🏼 Tftc 🍻

Crimson Ender

Tyftc, and congrats on the home! I hope it becomes a nice place for you to chill, relax and write many more chapters!

Paul Reading

Thx for letting us know and good luck on the move, moving always sucks

MrRinger

Hey thanks for the announcement. I would say just focus on the move and go on break for a bit until it's done. Will help you focus and get you mentally fresh for chapters. Have a fun (and stress free) move!

BlackRazaras

Thanks for the chapter and congratulations on getting the keys to your new house

Kota

Tbh I'd think it weird if William was on a first name basis with Jake by now, they definitely aren't friends or in any way close. "Lord Thayne" might just be a polite but distant way to refer to him in this case. What else is he going to call him? "Mister Thayne"?

Lynderyn

The promise of random cliffs ahead, much better imho than a totally justifiable hiatus. Thank you for the heads up and chapter

The Ravenger

TYFTC! Good luck with your move try not to stress yourself too much.

Jacob (EverythingRoy)

Thanks Zogarth! GL with the move, hope you thoroughly enjoy the new place :)

beeve

You say that now..

Peter Smith

Seeing as the others admnistartor rings are less ornate, does that make Jake a "decorated" administrator?

Jimbo

So, Miranda spent a solid week shooting dirty looks at anyone who might screw over Jake. Just staring at them, menacingly. She's a very good witch, I must say.

Jimbo

William is canonically a super weird guy. He went from top enemy to extremely loyal. No in between. His brain doesn't work in shades of grey.

Manowar

Good luck with the move! May you find your new place soon and without too much discomfort.

Jeryd Greer

Good luck on the move. I’ve moved 25 times in my life so I hear you when you say you hate it. Warmest house wishes. May it be the home you need.

ZanSanCho

Tftc Zog! And good luck with the move bud, I know how much relocating sucks ass.

Let me read

Chief Administer candidate. Miranda and the others are now just normal administers

definitelynotbrjenness

Odds that the snake attempts to follow? Slim because Jake asked him to guard the teleporter? Odds if he does attempt, it works despite what villy said? Even slimmer. How often is villy wrong on stuff like this? Almost never. Odds that the snake wants to try? Almost guaranteed. Odds that I wrote this so that Zog has to teleport the snake out to keep my 100% wrong streak active? 100%

definitelynotbrjenness

It would have been interesting if it was all bullshit and they all ended up head honcho in a simulation to see what their actions would be and then the bound god decided who to give what level of authority to.

Doorda

I don't think he will try too enamoured with Jake to consider

Corvid

They can't fight in the exalted prima terrace but it's one of those implied threat situations. Like she's just sitting there cataloging everyone and they all know that one wrong step carries the potential of a planetary sacrifice ritual, even if they probably wouldn't actually do that again. You nuke one little planet into oblivion and suddenly everyone walks on eggshells around the secretary of the verdant lagoon

SetherAedekae

Tftc. Good luck with the move. Sounds like the prima event will be starting very soon

Samuel Nelson

Best of luck, and do enjoy yourself!

Josie

as Jake's live-in girlfriend, I think Artemis has the right and sacred duty to redecorate his home at the Order while he's away. she can appease any nay-saying he has for her decor choices by adding a little something: his very own spatially expanding archery range

Hank

I'd actually love to see his reaction to this. And how quickly he gets over any negative feelings towards the matter after seeing the archery range lol.

definitelynotbrjenness

Made me wonder if God's redecorating would be similar to video game skins. Instantly make everything whatever design you want.

Trumangolorian

Much like the archery range if not a better one than he saw from Valhal after nevermore.

Trumangolorian

Tyftc Zogi. Can't wait to see the seat of the exalted primal event.

Elijah Belfer

Venus having this many layers was such a nice touch, can’t wait to see what the Milky Way black hole has at the center of the galaxy

Justin

I really hope we get chapters of the snake getting stronger and beating up the other a grades

Sushitrash

surely nothing would happen in this travel thru the void

Koala Man

Reminds me of Granny Weatherwax :)

Gh0st-Hunt3r

since we haven't heard neither head nor tails of this mysterious faction that tried to kidnap jake i hope we get to see some movement on that soon fer real that's a Mystery I'm Invested in mentally now !

Fylbrom

@rewdan The picture of some poor chap deciding to push his luck and flirt with Miranda by giving her special chocolates! Haha I needed that image in my mind. Thank you.
