What exactly was the Seat of the Exalted Prima? That was the core question Miranda had continually asked herself both before and during this Administrator Test. What was its purpose?

The first system event with the Seat allowed participants to experience a simulated world depending on whether they had made a different high-impact decision in the past. They had then been allowed to effectively alter their Paths based on the new reality simulated. Phillip, the former leader of the Fort, had been one of the most notable people who’d changed his Path after the system event, reinventing himself and going far further than he usually would. Admittedly, it was doubtful if he would reach B-grade, but if not for the system event, he would likely never even have made it to C-grade.

After that was the Prima Guardian event, which Miranda had a difficult time understanding the meaning of. She understood its purpose. It was a test of the natives across the new universe and decided the fates of planets inhabited by enlightened beings, but that didn’t really mesh with its connection to the Seat of the Exalted Prima.

Based on the first event and this one, the core of the Seat of the Exalted Prima was the concept of simulation. Meanwhile, the Prima Guardian and Primas in general had been very much real. However, upon further consideration, and in part due to having been allowed access to the internal discussions amongst the higher-ups of the Order, Miranda believed she’d started to understand why it existed.

The Prima Guardian had been an existence capable of emulating those on its planet. It could mimic certain skills and adapt like a chimera, while decidedly not being one. Instead, Miranda had begun to believe that it might have been a simulated creature, or at least born of the concept of simulation. An artificial creature, of sorts.

There was a definite futuristic aesthetic to the entire Seat of the Exalted Prima. It used high-tech drones to inform them of things, was literally a space station of some sort, and naturally used simulation, something often associated with a high level of technology. Given that, it wasn’t a stretch to say that if the Seat of the Exalted Prima could bring real people into a simulation, wasn’t it also theoretically possible for it to have summoned a simulated creature into the real world?

Of course, it was all a theory, but it had gotten Miranda thinking.

And those thoughts had ultimately led her to decide what to do with the place known as the Unnamed City. As William had said, the place was indeed horrid. The citizens were suffering; the leadership was incompetent, and Miranda felt compelled to try to right the wrong before her eyes, but she stopped herself and decided not to get involved.

She could be wrong, and she would accept it if she were, but she believed that her judgment had been correct. Miranda’s conclusion regarding the city was simple:

It didn’t exist.

Or, perhaps more accurately, it was just a simulation. A temporary construct, much more fake than even a dungeon, where at least theoretically the creatures within could be taken outside. Meanwhile, the Unnamed City wasn’t real, something she even believed the Seat directly hinted at with the name.

Why would a city that had clearly existed for a long time be unnamed? Also, why was there nothing around the city to show it was inhabited? In addition, and this wasn’t her who noticed it, but the wyvern, then there was no wildlife to be found anywhere. The only other “life” in this entire simulated world seemed to be within the city.

That’s why Miranda decided not to waste her time even interacting with the place, which should definitely be a valid option. Choosing inaction was an action in and of itself and was the one she would stick with. Besides, getting nearly a full month for them all to practice their magic in a quiet environment was a great opportunity, especially for those of them who’d very recently evolved.

Miranda would be lying if she said she wasn’t a little nervous that her judgment had been wrong. Alas, she’d made her choice as the timer ticked by, with nothing happening until the final three days of this stage of the test.

William was the first to notice, as he warned them, that a large force appeared to be approaching the Unnamed City. He’d gone to scout it out and kept them updated as he merely observed what would happen.

The approaching force consisted of over a thousand people, with nearly all of them C-grade, except for ten B-grades who led the group. They approached the Unnamed City and took it over, executing the ones currently leading it. Before William saw them do more, Miranda called him back, as, quite frankly, none of it mattered.

She cared only out of curiosity, as she liked to imagine what might have happened if they had decided to try to help the city in some way. Would they have been attacked by this approaching force? Thanked for helping the city? Would this force even have appeared if they had gone to the Unnamed City? Assuming the answer to that was yes, would they perhaps have come earlier?

Lots of questions they ended up never getting the answer to, as the thirty days of this stage were up quickly.

Congratulations, you’ve passed the second stage of the Administrator Test. The next stage will begin shortly. Do not leave the entrance platform.

The system message appeared, and with it, their group of five found themselves back inside the Seat of the Exalted Prima. Seeing the message itself, Miranda smiled a little. “I assume we all passed?”

She got nods all around, making her nod. “I doubt you could even fail that stage. Or maybe I’m a genius who saw through the true nature of the Administrator Test already, and everyone else actually failed.”

Her boastful joke sadly didn’t have time to elicit any positive reactions, as the metal disc beneath them suddenly activated yet again. The five once again had their consciousnesses transported into the simulation, and soon, they found themselves somewhere quite familiar.

“I see how it is,” Miranda said, feeling a little proud that she’d already considered this as a possibility.

They found themselves standing on the same hill with the Unnamed City far in the distance. Everything was exactly the same, making her believe they were indeed doing a repeat, something the system message quickly confirmed. Though it did appear there was some change, at least with the objective.

Administrator Test is continuing. Stage three: Another Cycle.

Objective: Consider the result of the last stage and take whatever actions you deem necessary and which you believe will prove most beneficial. This stage will last for thirty (30) days.

There were definite changes in the objective, but the vagueness remained. It was also immediately evident that this was effectively a time-loop kind of situation, though, since it was another thirty days, it would only be a twice-and-done kind of deal.

“Most beneficial...” Holstred muttered, having read the objective. “For whom?”

“Now that’s the question, isn’t it?” Miranda asked with a smile. “Perhaps one without a true answer. I’m getting increasingly unsure that there aren’t several ways to approach this test and be approved as an Administrator. Doesn’t mean it makes sense to me, but the Seat of the Exalted Prima must be judging something subjective regarding our approach.”

“Then would I be right to assume that we’ll stick with the same strategy?” the wyvern asked.

“If I believe I’m right, which I do, that would indeed be the most beneficial thing to do. For us, anyway,” Miranda said, and this time around, they didn’t even bother leaving the hilltop they originally appeared on. William didn’t go investigate the city, and even when the army appeared towards the end of the month, they stayed put, doing their own thing.

Lillian and Miranda had plenty of rituals and magic to study, which made them spend most of their time together. Meanwhile, Holstred enjoyed practicing his swordsmanship and even sparred with William, who was clearly holding back during their duels. The wyvern was by far the one with the least to do, but as a creature used to being solitary, he didn’t complain. He simply meditated and continued trying to improve his Records by at least a little before his evolution.

Like so, the third stage quickly came to an end, having proven itself even more uneventful than the second one. Yet Miranda had found it quite beneficial, and wasn’t that the objective?

At least the system didn’t outright tell her she’d failed as yet another system message marked the end of the stage.

Congratulations, you’ve passed the third stage of the Administrator Test. The next stage will begin shortly.

With that, they were once more teleported back to the Seat of the Exalted Prima. With the previous three stages having all lasted thirty days, and the event's total length being a hundred, it meant only ten remained before the Administrator Test was done.

“It would be rather ironic if the system just didn’t tell anyone if they were failing or not, but just kept making them continue completing these stages despite how futile it would be,” Miranda said in a joking tone as they waited for the system event to continue.

After spending two months not going much, they were all a little bored, and Miranda hoped that the fourth and probably final stage would be an interesting one. So far, only the first stage - the Tutorial - had included any mandatory combat, so she reckoned there was a solid chance this one would, too.

“That would be unfortunate,” William commented. “But at least it won’t have been a waste of time. The Tutorial was a valuable experience, and the practice wasn’t wasted. While it doesn’t seem like we gained any experience even when using professions, we definitely earned Records. Likely more than usual, given the environment.”

“True,” Miranda nodded. “Now, let’s see what- oh, there it is.”

Right as she was about to comment on the system message being late, it arrived.

Administrator Test is continuing. Final stage: Administrator’s Terrace.

Objective: Successfully claim your role within the Administrator’s Terrace. Time limit: ten (10) days.

Short, sweet, and simple, but also pretty vague. Fortunately, Miranda did know what the Administrator’s Terrace was. It was the unfortunate place where Jake and Ell’Hakan had first met one another during the first Seat of the Exalted Prima system event. From how he’d briefly described it, the place was one of the hemispherical greenhouses with a garden on it, with a clear view of the stars surrounding the Seat. That made her believe it was towards the top of the space station.

Not that such knowledge helped her much in finding the place. Jake had been teleported there originally, and based on the layout of the Seat of the Exalted Prima, many places seemed accessible only through teleportation.

“Seems rather straightforward on the surface,” the wyvern commented. “Way too straightforward. No way the objective is just to search the entire place hoping to find a random teleporter taking us to this Administrator’s Terrace.”

“Certainly not,” Holstred agreed. “There must be some method to discover its exact location.”

“For now, we should at least leave this room and check out the common areas for any clues,” Lillian acted as a voice of reason, pointing out that the room they were in was no longer sealed off.

“We should,” Miranda agreed, not feeling overly rushed. Turning to William, who’d definitely shown himself to be a major asset during this entire event, she saw he looked a bit off. “What’s wrong?”

“I can’t detect anyone else. Not anywhere,” he muttered, making some weird magical seals with his hands. “We’re the only five people in the Seat of the Exalted Prima as far as I can tell.”

“That... doesn’t make much sense,” Miranda frowned as she looked at the large hallway leading towards the common area that had been the first meeting place of the many races and factions of the Milky Way Galaxy way back then. “Let’s go, maybe you just can’t feel them due to barriers or something like that.”

It turns out there weren’t any barriers blocking their way, and the five of them could freely wander the entire Seat of the Exalted Prima unimpeded. They went to a few of the other rooms, which should belong to other planets who’d entered the Seat of the Exalted Prima for this Administrator Test, but there was no one anywhere.

Miranda was a little surprised that no one else from Earth had entered this test, but not that much. However, she knew for a fact that people from other planets would definitely enter the Administrator Test. Not even necessarily because they wanted to become Administrators or dared compete with Jake, but simply to gain the Records from participating in a system event.

That’s why this truly made no sense. There should at least be someone else.

“Could everyone else have failed?” Holstred questioned. “Perhaps the Seat judged that they weren’t truly aiming to become Administrators and compete for the World Event, making them fail the test. Lack of desire to truly take up the role could be a disqualifying factor.”

“That’s entirely possible,” Miranda said, considering his words. However, she quickly wrote it off. While the vast majority certainly wouldn’t dare compete with her, much less Jake, that didn’t mean there weren’t some who dared to at least try. They knew they wouldn’t win, but some would definitely want to become Administrators, hoping that by some miracle, they would end up as the Chief Administrator.

Even if they couldn’t gain that title, no one knew whether Administrators would keep any power or influence after a Chief Administrator had been successfully selected. Doubt regarding the true roles of these Seat of the Exalted Prima titles should alone be enough for at least a few to have earnestly tried to pass the test.

“I don’t think it’s a good assumption that everyone else failed the test,” Lillian said, shaking her head. “Something else is going on here.”

“There certainly is something amiss,” the wyvern frowned, sounding more like he wanted to be part of the conversation than having any actual input.

Miranda was in full agreement with both of them as they continued walking through the large space station and its many common areas. They even went to the hallway of simulation rooms that Miranda had used during the Myriad Paths event. Holstred had also done the event, though that had been back on his home planet, while Lillian hadn’t quite been strong enough to participate back then. Oh, and William was still in the clutches of the Primordial of Karma back then, which led him to make many self-sabotaging decisions, such as not taking part in important system events.

She considered whether that was why the mage was so quiet compared to the rest of them, and she was reluctant to ask him if that was the case. Being manipulated by a Primordial couldn’t be healthy and was bound to cause certain issues that would linger, perhaps for the rest of his life.

Quietly chatting, the five kept exploring as much of the space station as they could over the next few hours, even finding a few teleporters that took them around the large complex. There were several hemispheres with gardens, places that resembled private residences, training grounds, and much more. Miranda hadn’t seen any of this the first time she was there. Likely because it had all been unavailable back then.

Throughout, William didn’t speak at all, but instead kept making magical seals and appeared quite preoccupied. However, suddenly, he stopped and frowned, making the other four turn to him.

“Did you discover something?” Miranda asked.

“Pretty sure I did,” William nodded, and without any warning, his body exploded with energy as a whirlwind of metal strings was unleashed towards the four of them, striking Lillian first as blood soon filled the empty hallways of the Seat of the Exalted Prima.

Wonder if he found out more manipulation was happening

Episode 19

The plot thickens indeed tyftc

Michael Fannon

Now that was a random cliff. Love it

djthomp

Huh. Guess we'll see tomorrow.

Ivo Wißen

I hope for him, if he betrayed them he will die, jake will hunt hin to the end if he kills miranda. No way around it. If only he comes back he better RUN. but even then if he dosen't flee back to eversmile jake will get to him

Rahsheem Reid

Schemes on schemes. He kills Miranda and Jake has to put his big boy pants on.

Loststar7

Couldn’t have said it better. You definitely have a way with words.

Aaron Barba

Maybe they were under an illusion and William harmed them to make them snap out of it? If William truly wanted to kill them he'd aim for the vital organs but it only says he struck them

Platnum

Tftc! I have a theory but I don’t wanna spoil it here.

Martino Zanchi

Seems to me like they are in another simulation. Also I don't see William having betrayed them. He stands to gain nothing from it.

Daniel Brian

William is the only real person in that room?

Tyler S.

I believe it was a test to break out of the simulation as i havent had any suspicion of William since he became a heritic, but karma is known as a Bitch.

Robling49

I was thinking halfway through the chapter it was impressive how Zog turned the psycho murderer into a pitiable nice kid and then he hits us with that

Steven Tuttle

Tftc and finally some more Miranda but omg what !!!!!

Dylan Hilliard

William back stabbing them? Nice cliff hanger. I dont get it. Why would he do this? Maybe this is a misdirection and he is protecting them?

Michael

That seems likely, but then what’s the point of the simulation?

Fdrugc

Tftc

Scotty

if its a theory then it isn't a spoiler - share your thoughts!

granndfunk

I assume this is also a simulation? It would be weird to mention it all, then not question whether this is as well. I assume it's why it's only them around.

Fdrugc

I think the old picture looks more accurate as to what Sylphye looks like.

Platnum

Zogarth wouldn’t give William this much page time just to write him off being a dumbass and killing Miranda. William, I believe, is changed for the better and knows that even at B grade he gets his shit kicked in by Jake. So my theory is that William figured something out about the simulation, and knowing what he knows about the party, he has to get the ball rolling to let Miranda be the last one standing but not let on.

Fylbrom

I had a thought on why William did what he did but after re-reading it im just lost. He had to have sensed something but with no hints or clues!? Zogarth! That's just plain cruel hahaha! Way to ensure im eager for tomorrow's chapter I guess. So long as he doesn't leave us with another cliffhanger like this one tomorrow as well lol.

Miotara

I doubt he betrayed them, he had nothing to gain from it and it would just piss off Jake who would inevitably retaliate later. It looks like they are in another simulation. My guess is either they needed to figure out it wasn't real and get out by killing their images or William was the only one that was real in that particular simulation and each of the others were in their own simulation as well. That brings me to another point, if the chief administrator test is about figuring out what is a simulation and what isn't then Jake will have a massive advantage as no simulation would be able to trick him

Daniel

I’m ok with William killing them all.

Hoid

I’m surprised this cliff wasn’t on Friday lol

Hoid

Thank for the chapter though!

atome 4 000

I bet they are in a simulation.

Xander

TFTC :) So William has spotted that the others are podpeople made by the Prima event, right? Suggested edits: "The five ** once had their" missing word "at" "With three stages *having each lasting* thirty days," the meaning here is a little unclear to me at least. Either "each having lasted" or just "each lasting" . "But at least *I* won’t have been a waste of time" should be "it" "was one of the *hemisphere* greenhouses with a garden *on* it" should be "hemispherical" Also, if its a greenhouse, wouldn't the garden be "in" it rather than "on" it?

Fylbrom

Hard agree

Cory S.

I think we have a clue as to what is going on. Miranda’s thoughts about this being a simulation and then their arrival with nobody else being there. I think each one of them are with their own simulated copy of their group and William with his Karmic powers has realized this which is why he just did what he did. Lillian is fine and the way to move forward is for each individual of the group to realize they are in a simulation and to break out of it. That is my guess here based on the clues given in the chapter.

C0bra$

Thank u for the story

Rewdan

Nooooo, is it possible to actually die in the seat of the seat of the exalted prima?

Rewdan

So glad today is Thursday, can you imagine how horrible this cliffhanger would be on a Friday 😱

Christian Sullivan

What if the first simulation had each of the group going into their own sims? And this one was William's. Like for the last ninety days he has been working with simulations. The test is to realize that you're in a simulation inside a simulation.

Bobmarley Bob

Maybe he is the only one in the group with desire to actually win over jake?

definitelynotbrjenness

I soooo wanted to say something the last couple months when I realized what was going on. Go back and read everything involving William and I guarantee you'll notice what I'm talking about. Zog created a masterpiece with how he put this together. Everything was right there in front of us and nobody noticed. Couldn't see the forest for the trees. I sat in shock when I figured it out. The twist no one would see coming despite being told time and time again what was going on. All the clues laid out for us just waiting to be put together. A map guiding us to the location of the treasure that we refused to follow. What did we miss? How could we miss something so obvious? There should have been only one conclusion. The answer is so obvious now. I don't have a freaking clue, but thank you for reading my imitation of an AI click bait video.

Rewdan

Nar this is way too confusing, I’ve run through so many permutations and none of them make sense. My best theory is that we are seeing things through Williams POV in the SOTEP and each of the 5 are facing their own simulation. No one is actually dead and Jake doesn’t have to stomp William again.

Ra

I thought we were gonna have a mini Mother of Learning arc. Zorian abruptly woke up, no... William abruptly woke up with a sharp pain in his stomach. His whole body convulsed, buckling against the object that fell on him, and suddenly he was wide awake, not a trace of drowsiness in his mind.

Ra

Maybe they're all in a video game where the only way to get out is by killing themselves. I bet William will take his own life after killing everyone else.

Tom Roe

Haven't had a totally unforeseen cliff like this in a while. Tyfc.

Quantainium C

My first thought was that this is another simulation for all of them. But it might just be William in this one.

James B Barrett

He said in the beginning. He sensed no one around him. Then realized. That also extended to his party

Daniel Brian

Recognizing the simulation? 🫠

Ray Light

That would be taking a page out of the Matrix playbook😂

Fylbrom

Ooohhhhh you're right I completely missed that. Haha damn!

definitelynotbrjenness

This was an assassination the malefic chosen has been planning ever since he tasted the mushrooms in the burrito Miranda brought him for dinner.

RonGAR

I think they were supposed to actually do something to save that village. ------------- Are we really trying to make William a betrayer again??? I liked 'helpful' William better.

Arieh Sochaczevski

Thanks for the chapter! I see too many possibilities. SimWilliam? He’s actually protecting/helping them somehow? They’re in a simulation and need to wake up in order to get to the real terrace? William is actually going to turn out to be an asshole? So many directions, so little time!

zran

or rather all of them are in similar situations, where they got paired with simulated versions of their parties

zran

eh, if they get killed in the event they dont really die, is mentioned what if they die inside of the event area they simply fail the event and are returned to where they where at

zran

no, was mentioned on the event description, if they die they just get expelled from the event safely

Brett Menzel

Doubt he's a traitor. He wouldnt cross Jake again. I was assuming that he realized he was actually alone, but earlier he does say "we are the only 5 people here". but he might just be trying to figure it out at that point and not actually detecting karma from them.

Patryk

Zogarth: Why people hate William? He's just a character Zogarth writing William plot:

Karim Saadi

Or it's Mirandas simulation and the "betrayal" is the test.

thkiwow

I think the people themselves are a simulation. the system is trying to mindfuck them

definitelynotbrjenness

I wonder if Miranda made the same decision every time...no wait.. the split must have occurred at the final stage or William would have realized the were simulations. Or William has known all along and he just waited until he was sure what he should do. Or zog has shown us parts of Real Miranda and then today shifted to real William. Or William has returned to his true path. Or mind controlling parasites have been embedded in them and the blood is from William removing them.

MarineDebris

You just had to put that out in the universe, didn't you?! Now Friday's cliff is gonna be so much worse!!

Namorat

As many others, I assume this is another simulation. Now sure about the specifics, though

Dave

Tftc

Rewdan

But why is there so much blood?

Carl Never

Everything seemed so normal till it wasnt

Phil Ritter

Don’t think William is actually going mental. He is either a simulation or what I’m banking on each one of them was grouped up solo with 4 simulations

Jimbo

That's my guess. They are all in separate sims.

DeAndrea H

I’m giving William the benefit of the doubt if for no other reason than that he knows and we know that Jake would smear him across the galaxy. My theory is that during those teleportations, each member of the party got replaced and Miranda is the only real one, while the rest of her party is simulations. She mentally harped on the Seat being able to simulate the environment and simulate the monsters. Maybe now it’s simulating the people?

Dan

I wonder if the goal is to figure out this one is also a simulation, and "escape" from it. This may be his way of ripping the bandaid off, maybe he figured out death is the way to pass and move on, but believed (rightfully so) that the others would potentially see an ulterior motive behind his reasoning. I like William in a weird way, and I wanna give him the benefit of the doubt here. Hopefully it's not a situation where he realized only one of them could pass, and decided to try and take the chief administrator title for himself

Patty O’Cartnoy

I want to reread that one soon. Or an audiobook version would be nice

Lemonsqueezy

I really wasn't into this chapter at first, but that ending definitely got my attention. My best guess, as many others also believe, is that the other members are sims. William can detect and manipulate karmic connections like Eversmile. I am assuming that the reason he was so quiet, messing with his magic, and thinking was because he was trying to figure out what was wrong. He probably finally noticed that the karmic connections with the others were there but they were wrong, and determined what was going on and killed the other sims. Either that or William went full psycho again, which doesn't make sense because he gets nothing out of it. Miranda is the one that needs to survive and pass for it to be successful. So I think each member got put into a separate reality and have to figure out that the others are sims before they will succeed. The problem with that is William is the only person with the ability to do what he did. So, I think the method of figuring out what is going on is tailored to each one of them. After they figure it out they are teleported to the terrace to wait for the other members.

Lemonsqueezy

Oh we are definitely going back to Jake's POV now.

Lemonsqueezy

He is kind of whiny like Jason from HWFWM.

Lemonsqueezy

There is no reason why the System wouldn't be able to simulate blood.

Xerecs

I think he's more like Jake where he ultimately wouldn't want the position.

Dan

Agreed, I can't see him wanting it unless there was still someone pulling his strings behind the scenes, but I can't see that being the case unless maybe the mystery faction got to him somehow. I feel like it's safe to assume there's something else going on, and William actually does have their best interests in mind

Bookreader97

Has anyone important to Jake ever died in the series yet? Other than that statue guy el hakken killed.

The Dregs

You bastard, you got me.

Jordan

Don't think William is actually going betrayal. Theres something else happening. If nothing else, William knows that Jake would kill him with little effort, so there would be zero point to a just straight up betrayal. Its all simulations, even themselves is my guess. William figured out that not even they are real right now, so he is attempting to break the simulation, at least thats my theory.

nathan

I bet one or more of their party have been replaced with simulations of them which are hindering or actively working against them

Kota

Well, the Fallen King did, but seeing as he got better one might argue that doesn't count. Same with Casper and Jacob during the tutorial I guess.

Lemonsqueezy

That and the trial is only for Miranda. She is the one that needs to succeed. The others are there for support. There are benefits for them getting to the end of the trial, but the only reason William could possibly have to betray Miranda is if he doesn't want her to succeed at becoming an administrator. Which would mean that his ability to stay on Earth or in the Milky Way would end abruptly and he would have to go into hiding because causing Miranda to fail harms Jake and would definitely piss him off.

Siethrobo

Depends on how you define important. The chick he thought he had a crush on died in the tutorial.

Lemonsqueezy

They were all during the tutorial. People like Caroline (Jake's Crush) and Theodore (Jake's friend/coworker). The others that died were all just coworkers of Jake that entered the tutorial with him. They were all killed by William except Jacob and Casper.

Lemonsqueezy

Yeah, William betraying them just doesn't benefit him at all. He would lose all the safety and protection Earth grants him due to Jake, and would live the rest of his life hiding somewhere where Jake cannot get to him. I doubt William allied to another God after what Eversmile did to him.

Lemonsqueezy

I knew something was up because you usually get to the point rather quickly BR.

Lemonsqueezy

William also wouldn't want to lose the safety and protection living on Earth gives because of Jake's power and influence.

Chloe

Ree!!!

Tyftc

Rob Lyon

I see they're now playing a game of Among Us

Anonymous

or William is a simulation, and they were all split apart to test their qualifications

Anime Problem

They need to escape the simulation to actually reach the real place.

Peter Smith

I'm leaning to the idea that the administrator test has to due with simulated karma. William striking the the four others is simply him testing the karmic reaction. It says he attacked them not that he killed them, furthermore this will allow him to recognize the difference between simulated karma and real karma, as him attacking them will create a real karmic reaction. If this is true then that means that simulated karma is actively hindering them from finding the administrator's seat. The first three tests were to determine what kind of karmic impasse to use. The tutorial simulation was about how they would interact if they started at zero and worked together to succeed. The second test was about the what karma they would create while given no instructions, and the third was about the difference in karma between the actions taken while without instructions versus with instructions. Or in otherwords it simulated who they are as a group, what their goals are, and how their actions would change with knowledge. All important information when determining how to inhibit the advancement of a group or individual, as you need to know your target, what they want, and how they'll try to get it.

Dan

I just realized William might be the most brilliant of them all if my thoughts here are right: hostile actions (combat) are PROHIBITED within the seat of the exalted prima, and although William has never been there before, he should be able to understand some of the rules of the place purely through lingering karma. Me thinks William was the first to figure out the passing conditions this time around

CT

All of them are simulations. We just saw William s test from Miranda POV. /tinfoil hat off

Jordan

An interesting idea. For sure plausible

Jordan

Ya that statue guy wasn’t important to Jake either. And no, I don’t believe there have been any true deaths for those that have been actual real friends of Jake rather than followers or acquaintances

Abelian

Or Lillian. Is a spy and traitor for the Lucentai God queen faction mentioned quite a few chapters ago, and noticed she was doing something to hinder progress for Miranda and co.

Xerecs

I can't see her going against Jake or Miranda.

ABTelford

Oh! Best theory I’ve heard yet!

definitelynotbrjenness

Now, I'm curious if Will I Am psycho attacked to demonstrate or to win.

definitelynotbrjenness

Imagine being William and receiving a system message saying you must kill the others to advance. You wait for the others to mention it and allow Miranda to kill them, but they say and do nothing. You run every test you can think of to determine your actions, but the results are inconclusive. Now you have to risk stealing Miranda's seat by killing them in hopes that your hunch that they have to be simulations in correct. But am I being a psycho and creating an excuse to kill? Isn't this the same shit I pulled during the tutorial? Well here goes nothing...ducking Jake is going to kill me...SCWING System message, seat claimed. Teleport...no Miranda yet. Did I screw up? I'm a Deadman. 6 more days. Please show up Miranda.

Tomer Yud

im confused. not a great chapter imo go back to Jake

Lucky Luke

After spending two months not *doing* much, they were all a little bored, and Miranda hoped that the fourth and probably final stage would be an interesting one.

No. We need to know what's going on with people other than jake

I bet, they all got seperated to their own simulations, and william just realized hes with simulated group, so he attacked them to claim his seat. And theybwill do the same in their own simulations

I think Williams wanted to test if he could kill/arm them since he wouldn't be able to in the real deal.

Jeff McCulley

So, the entire station is a simulation. That’s why they’ve seen no one else. And they have to find their way out of the simulation to reach the Garden to claim their seats. Well, William certainly picked one way. And dammit…tomorrow is Friday!

Jeff McCulley

On the contrary. Excellent chapter, imo.

Jeff McCulley

Don’t think so. He actually would have told Miranda first, if that was the case.

Considering violence against others is prohibited…

Jeff McCulley

I think they just exit the sim, and still have to make their way.

Jeff McCulley

I actually like William. He’s been through shit, and is trying to be better.

Kevin Watson

definitely some sort of simulation fuckery, whole chapter was about how strange the simulations are

Jeff McCulley

…or maybe they all had some kind of parasite attached?

If this isn't the outcome then William just signed his death warrant because Jake will not let it slide.

Dan Greaves

I disagree. Jake has been left at a nice juncture of meditating until it's time for the prima event. We can cover the lessons he learns from that when we cut back to him. This is good writing. Why wouldn't you use Jake's passing of time whilst meditating on the concepts (a time consuming process by all accounts) to do an update on the other characters. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a bit more about all the others in the run up to the Seat of the Prima event this week and next and then the week after Jake travels back to the order with some unusually impressive conceptual gains and we've had an update on all the people about to enter the Prima event.

The audiobook narrator Jack Voraces does a good job. He's no Travis Baldree, but still memorable.

Poor Chris

I didn't like it at first because a chapter of Miranda sitting around for 60 days wasn't very interesting, but the ending of the chapter made it good. I also prefer when the story mostly is in the POV of the main character. I do agree with others that where Jake is is a good and logical pause on his story until the SoTEP event starts for him. The next we hear from him would be him returning to the Order and then going to the event. This chapter was mostly about passing another month in time where I can only assume was time Jake spent meditating at the gate.

Wild guess: What if this whole simulation test thingy was used to sort out intruders, that managed to infiltrate the 93rd universe. I’m thinking of this secret organisation. Maybe they use some sort of magic to “revive” people as puppets (which is why people though dead are reappearing as part of them) and this test was able to filter them out as they don’t have enough sapience/self-awareness in them to realize what it means to be in a simulation. The system knows this and tries to prevent them to taking over the Prima Seat.

Late Night Decaf

Ah, maybe the final stage was all a simulation, with the POV Miranda not even being real? It was the version of the test for William, which he figured out, so now he’s killing the simulated copies of his team.

Was just thinking to my self how much my opinion on William has changed over the books. Lmao hopefully this is a good thing
