“What the fuck is Jake doing!?” Miranda questioned as she paced back and forth, looking at the newly updated Prima Credits balance available to her. “Is he killing half the Administrators in the event or what!?”

During Jake’s stay in the Central Domain, there were occasional bursts of Prima Credits from killing other Administrators as well as from gathering treasures and whatnot. The points had been decent so far, though it had slowed down recently. Perhaps the event had reached a stage where one didn’t earn many Credits but instead competed for greater rewards. Either way, it didn’t matter much, as Miranda was doing fine with the Credits available to her.

Holstred was still on an absolute tear, and recently they’d even made contact with another Territory belonging to the Pantheon of Life, establishing an alliance immediately and making it far easier to defend their existing area, as now at least one more border was covered by an ally.

The larger their Territory got, the more difficult it was to keep track of everything and ensure every border was monitored and defended, but again, Miranda believed she was doing a pretty good job with the assistance of Kindroth and Lillian.

“I would guess the system forced some kind of confrontation between Administrators,” Lillian voiced her thoughts. “Perhaps some kind of tournament?”

“If it is a tournament, it must be a free-for-all based on how many people he’s killed,” Miranda muttered, a bit annoyed there wasn’t more information on where Prima Credits came from. All she had was a log that mentioned the person who supplied the Credits, with no further information. Definitely not up to proper invoicing standards in her opinion.

“Tramon also provided some points,” Lillian added, also having the privilege to check the log. “Not as many, but some. It’s stopped, though.”

Miranda suddenly remembered a special object she’d avoided buying thus far and quickly checked for it.

Truesoul Scanner (Territory Administrators Only)

An item that informs the user whether an Administrator from the Territory is still alive in the World of the Exalted Prima. One-time use.

Cost: 25,000 PC

There were several variants of this item, with this one being the cheapest. One step more expensive was a scanner that also worked on allies and Vassals, and finally, the most expensive worked on any Administrator. However, there were requirements for enemies, such as them having to have entered the Territory or having fought an Administrator from the Territory.

The item was expensive, but Miranda believed it was worth checking whether someone had died. Their other option for doing so was to send out an Administrator to check, but that would result in them not being able to return for a month, which would be far too long. Thus, she bought one and quickly used it to check up on the True Dragon.

“Tramon was slain,” she said with a frown. Miranda knew just how powerful a True Dragon was, and that his death meant the situation in the Central Domain had to be dire. She quickly bought another variant, which was four times more expensive.

Truesoul Scanner (Territory/Ally/Vassal Administrators Only)

An item that informs the user whether an Administrator from the Territory, an allied Territory, or a Vassal is still alive in the World of the Exalted Prima. One-time use.

Cost: 100,000 PC

Using it, Miranda confirmed the Behemoth had also fallen, making both her and Lillian now really worried. The Behemoth had been powerful enough to fight Jake, at least for a time, and likely surpassed Tramon in strength. No, she definitely surpassed him, if not because of her variant race, then through sheer experience as a B-grade.

“How about Jake?” Lillian asked, making Miranda buy another one to check immediately, not even recalling whether she wouldn’t have automatically been informed if the Chief Administrator had died. In either case, she used it and breathed out a sigh of relief.

“He’s still alive,” she said, finally relaxing a little. It would be odd if he’d died just after getting a lot of Prima Credits, but who knows if it had been some last act before dying. Hopefully, he was doing well and could handle whatever situation had led to the death of both a Behemoth and a True Dragon.

“Is William also still in the Central Domain?” Lillian asked.

“He should be,” Miranda said, reminded of the metal and karma mage. “Let me just check if he-”

Miranda didn’t get any further when she realized using the Truesoul Scanner wouldn’t be necessary... because the mage had just earned a massive windfall of Prima Credits out of nowhere, nearly matching what Jake had gotten, much to her genuine surprise.

--

The elf stared down at the human in front of him, his eyes full of confusion as he muttered. “Why would... who are you?”

He hung suspended in the air, countless metal threads binding his body, cutting into it. Moments earlier, he’d been fighting a Chosen from the Holy Church, his final opponent in the antechamber. As the Chosen of a Council Member of the Altmar Empire, and one of the greatest mages of his generation, the elf had dominated his foe, killing not just one Chosen but two. With his fellow elf from the Altmar Empire, they’d managed to get so far and overcome so many opponents.

Except there never was a second elf from the Altmar Empire. There also wasn’t a full party of fighters from the Holy Church, nor a certain beastkin part of the United Tribes, or a Dragonkin working with the Dragonflights. Had the human with the two warriors from Valhal even been real? Maybe... but not truly.

“Not someone worth remembering,” the human said.

The elf now only saw his true visage for the first time, and even then, the young man in front of him felt oddly familiar. Like an old friend he hadn’t met in a long time. The elf knew he was affected by powerful magic and that in his current state, he was in no condition to fight. He had realized what he was dealing with too late and was now paying the price. They’d all paid the price, unaware that the greatest threat had been among them all along, yet they never saw him as an enemy.

“You’re the new Chosen of Eversmile?” the elf asked, believing he had finally known who he was dealing with, and at least wanting his final moments to have some value. Confirming that Eversmile had a Chosen would be massive news, and truthfully, it felt like the only explanation... because otherwise, where the hell had a karma mage of this caliber appeared from? He wasn’t a member of the Dao Sect, which was the only other faction besides the rare followers of Eversmile, who had people specialized in karmic magic.

“Eversmile...” the human sighed before shaking his head. “Not a Chosen or a follower, no. Though I can’t deny some connection.”

The elf wanted to know more, but the mage didn’t give him time before the metal strings binding him tightened, and his exhausted body was unable to resist as the elf’s head was separated from his body, turning into blue wisps of energy moments later.

Standing alone in the room, William let out a sigh as he looked down at his hands and the ruined room around him. He hated it. He liked his metal manipulation; he practiced it diligently; however, he couldn’t deny that it was far from his strongest magic. Meeting Eversmile was one of the worst things that had ever happened to him, well, outside of the things he’d done to himself.

He had learned from Eversmile personally for a while, had his Legacy and methods inscribed into his soul, and as much as he hated to admit it, he remembered every bit. Remembered and understood. Comprehended. He was good at karmic magic. Really good. So good it annoyed him to no end. It was hateful that the Legacy of the person William despised and feared most in the multiverse was also a perfect fit for him.

At first, he’d continued making use of the karmic magic taught by Eversmile, actively worked against Ell’Hakan since he learned Eversmile and Yip of Yore had teamed up, and done everything out of spite. He was a heretic of Eversmile, through and through, with his Path reflecting it. He believed that using the teachings of the Primordial without even a shred of the benefits any blessed individuals would normally receive was a way to get revenge, but the further he went on his Path, the more he began to realize...

Wasn’t this what Eversmile had wanted all along? Wasn’t William still dancing in the palm of the ancient god?

In retrospect, it was foolish to think he could trick Eversmile. He was the Primordial of Karma. Yes, the Path of a Heretic did provide William with methods to hide his existence from the god, but it was moronic to think those would be nearly enough to prevent Eversmile from tracking every trace of his Records throughout the entire multiverse.

William knew he was only a Heretic because Eversmile didn’t actively step up to stop him from being one, which begged the question... why?

Why had Eversmile done any of what he’d done to William? He had genuinely hurt William’s Path and future. He’d convinced him to skip system events that awarded permanent titles, to not partake in Nevermore, and to fill his head with so many things that were just wrong or outright damaging to his future.

That indicated Eversmile wanted to cause William harm for some reason, or at least wanted to keep him in the dark longer, fearing William would realize the influence the Primordial had upon him if he partook in any system event. At least that’s what William believed for the longest time, and there was probably some truth to it.

The Treasure Hunt, Seat of the Exalted Prima, and Nevermore were all places where, when inside, even Eversmile would be temporarily cut off by the system. There was a good chance William would have realized something was very wrong had he taken part in any of those events, which would have made him want to break free of the Primordial’s control and manipulation earlier. Eversmile wanting solely to prevent this from happening was William’s main theory for the longest time, but now he questions if that was truly the full story.

Because hadn’t he caught up despite the god’s sabotage? No, hadn’t he done far more than merely caught up at this point?

Right after separating from Eversmile, William initially entered a period where he was far weaker. He’d lost his Path; his class and profession had both changed because he had renounced his blessing and become a Heretic, and, all in all, his future seemed broken. However, sheer hatred and a wish to discover exactly who he was, free from others’ manipulation, had pushed William onwards to realize his Path.

After a while, he realized that not only was he progressing as fast as he had while blessed by Eversmile, but soon he surpassed his old self. His comprehension of karmic magic progressed by leaps and bounds; he got more and more skilled, and now that he had reached B-grade and fully realized his Path, William was more sure than ever.

This had all been Eversmile’s plan from the start.

Or at least it had been one possible scenario the Primordial had predicted, and now he was curiously observing how his little Heretic would grow. This realization was part of why William hated using karmic magic so much, because whenever he did, he felt his connection to the Primordial of Karma. A connection he’d thought he was taking advantage of for revenge, only to realize now that the god was totally fine with it.

For a bit, he considered abandoning his Path entirely, cutting Eversmile off and not being a Heretic. Would it absolutely cripple him to only be a metal mage? Yes, but it was a genuine consideration... alas, William decided against it and continued to take advantage of his status as a Heretic.

A part of him couldn’t simply let go of such power, and another part of him wanted to believe that if he kept going like this, he would one day get a chance for revenge. He would ruin whatever Eversmile was planning. Such a thought seemed foolish until one factored in the surrounding people. Even if the Primordial could manipulate William and predict what he would do, what about Lord Thayne? The Chosen of the Malefic Viper.

With his Bloodline, manipulating and planning for what Lord Thayne would do seemed absolutely ludicrous, even for a Primordial, not to mention the Malefic Viper who would certainly not appreciate another god trying to manipulate and make plans involving his Chosen without permission.

Especially not seeing the odd relationship between Lord Thayne and his Patron, which even William couldn’t fully comprehend. He knew they were both Heretics in some form, which really didn’t make any sense given Lord Thayne was also definitely the Chosen of the Malefic Viper. Truthfully, William had stopped thinking about it too much, knowing it would do him no good to rack his brain trying to understand whatever was going on between two unfathomable existences.

Perhaps it was overly ambitious to the point of being ludicrous, but William was determined to get his revenge one way or another. His negative emotions toward Eversmile were driving him. The karmic connection between him and the Primordial only made William stronger, and while it was still a long way off, he would one day do something that genuinely hurt the god. If not through his own hands, then through someone else’s.

For now, William would have to accumulate power, though, even if he had to rely on the accursed karmic magic to do so. It was almost ironic that the more he seemed to hate his own karmic magic, the more powerful it became, and the faster he improved. He hated how fucking good he was at it, but the thought that one day he could wipe that eternal smile off the Primordial’s face kept him going.

Ideally, his smile would fade when William snuffed out the god’s existence, but maybe that was too ambitious. Even so, through observing Lord Thayne and the others around him, he’d learned that sometimes one should strive for the impossible, and maybe, just maybe, one would succeed. Shoot for the stars, aim for the moon, and all that.

As William was still deep in thought, movement in the air above caught his attention. Looking up, he saw the Cyclops Majordomo had returned, looking very unpleased for some reason.

“Finally done here? You really are trying to delay matters, being so much slower than every other antechamber,” the projection said in an annoyed tone. “Let’s tidy up and get you refreshed so we can move on.”

With a wave of his hand, the Cyclops Majordomo fully healed William before continuing, not giving the human any chance to respond or do anything.

“Usually, I would go over the need for proper etiquette and whatnot, but there are far more important people waiting for you already, so let’s not bother. Just don’t make a fool of yourself if you know how to do that. Now let’s go; the Abundant Emperor is awaiting us in the throne room.”

The massive door behind the projection let out a loud sound as it began to open, and the cyclops floated back towards it, giving William one last look. “Get moving already; people are waiting, and we don’t have all day.”

This brings up the question of how far can someone go using a Path they actually despise? Obviously if William continues to gather Records and improve his karmic magic, he'll always progress, but will his own disgust of his own path introduce a weakness or strength? How much does someone's feelings matter towards progression?

Cyranosaurus

Nice chapter. You’ve done a very good job writing William, I feel almost as twisted inside as he does because I hated his guts so bad in the first book and now I’m kind of cheering him on as long as he doesn’t backstab Jake.🤯

Loststar7

TFTC and happy Friday to you all. That was a great end to the week, looking forward to coming BACK to it on Monday. Zogarth you’re the backbone of this operation so hope you heal up quickly.

Kudon

I enjoy these recent chapters but I very much hope that the overly long fights and non-jake chapters are build-up for some proper story/event progression with the anticipated emperor. It's probably a sympton of the patreon chapter anticipation thing but for my personal taste, the story could progress a little faster than it does now.

Tyler S.

Oh William I do hope someday you can throw some dirt in Eversmile's eyes. But if your aim is to make him not smile, then i will remember your path as it was definitely one of intrigue

Bob of Doom

Someone became a god from obsession. I don’t think William hates his path. He hates his connection to Eversmile and that spite could keep him to S grade. I think most of the characters we have met will make it to S grade. It’s god-hood that seems to be the delimiter. Though I think everyone would be shocked if Miranda, Caleb, William, Jacob, and Casper become gods. Edit: by everyone I mean other gods in the setting. They know what it takes to become divine and it seems to be a big qualitative jump that everyone except Jake will need to make.

Seppiman

Thank you for the chapter, you always make my day a little better!

SyndaXatrix

I wonder if Eversmile was hoping to turn William into a Heretic-Chosen, not unlike Jake. He seems wildly interested in Villy and Jake dynamic and obviously Jake himself. Food for thought for sure

Daniel Brian

William is one of those characters I can't decide if I want to root for him or not, which I guess may be Zog's intent.🤔 If it is, that's some masterful storytelling! It's like, he's strong, but a little crazy. He's helping Jake, but is it for a sinister alterior motive? He's got that karmic magic that's a little like El Hakkan in the control aspect (more about ties to one another than emotions, but they're linked), but doesn't seem to be the kind of person (lately) to try it on the protagonists/deuteragonists.. I want to relate to him on the antisocial stuff, his seemingly aimless depression, but what if it's all an act? Jake still doesn't trust him, and I trust Jakes instincts. In the end, I think him joining the party (what I think will end up his pantheon) of The GFK, Sylphie, Vespy, Sandy, Caleb, Carmen, and the Sword Saint would be amazing, but it would also take away a potential worthy opponent from Jake.

djthomp

It's been quite a while since we got this much of a look at what William is mentally up to. Always quite interesting these days. Poor Miranda, stuck wondering just what the hell is going on.

Arrogant Savant

That reminds me of what the System Universe did where the fact the main character hated and feared his own path of progression to then push through it to gain more than most others ever had, with there being a character who had a similar experience to the point of empathy.

Xerecs

You're forgetting that Eversmiles plans for William stem from before the integration. William was simply the test subject chosen.. Jake was supposed to die early on in the tutorial. I think its more likely he wanted to see if someone on a heretical path could reach godhood as I don't believe it's been mentioned if anyone has done it before.

djthomp

I've had that thought in the back of my mind for a while. Jake did turn in a Heretic Blessed grimoire during Nevermore which means the system doesn't even have to come up with one itself if it wants to make some copies and start handing them out as event rewards.

Arrogant Savant

Give William the grimoire of the heretic-blessed Jake! Do it now!

Dylan Hilliard

Great questions! I think one's feeling's hold tremendous weight. It drives their actions thus gives them power. Words of power, if i recall, depends on it.

Dylan Hilliard

William's back story is why this book is the best!

SyndaXatrix

I remember, I was conisdering that plans were adapted slightly after Jake turned his plans upside down during the tutorial. If anyone could pick out quickly how Jake and Villy's relationship lends itself to heresy, its Eversmile. And his experiment with William might simply be to see if a Chosen turned Heretic can reach Godhood but its fun to speculate that there might be some more complexity to his hypothesis

Rewdan

I trust William even less than before actually I've never trusted William.

Rewdan

Thanks Zogarth, its been a great weeks reading.

Joshua Little

That's the thing though. I don't think he despises his path, just how he got there.

Ricardo júnio

I'm thinking his path is much like curse magic, if curses are like emotional energy and karma can manipulate emotions... I feel like there are some parallels here

SyndaXatrix

I can see William and Jacob reaching Godhood somehow. Casper should make it, he's too talented IMO not to. Caleb, I'm afraid if he doesn't make it, it'll be on the back of being killed by the Dark Heavens, not unlike Tenlucis was.

Dan

I'm falling more in love with William's character and his development every time we see him. I believe in you, William; at the very least, go beat the ever-loving shit out of Eversmile when you're strong enough!

Schuh

An issue this kind of story needs to address ist that every character needs to be exceptional to remain in the story. This means that either you come up with a reason why a statistically impossible amount of gods from a single generation on a single planet show up, or you start killing characters. In this case records from one person affects all others and Jake's bloodline does too. This means having most major character from earth ascend to godhood is somewhat justified and they don't need to be killed off. So far no one terribly important has died, but with how long this story is presumambly going to take to get to even S grade there is plenty of time for that to change. Miranda's path is tied to Jake's success which is a lot of success to be tied to so I think she can easily make it to godhood. She is also not really at risk from competition replacing her in her position, because very few people actually understand Jake well enough.

Clint

My pet theory on Eversmile’s original “experiment” with William: He wanted to see if a truly talented individual could reach the top while rejecting the benefits of all the newfangled System Events — ie more like the way the Primordials themselves did it. (Experimental Question: Are the System Events really creating stronger paths, or just allowing weaker paths to reach godhood?) Hence: picking someone who will deliberately “fail” the survival tutorial by slaughtering his fellow survivors, and then going on to keep him out of every Event, while teaching him a strong path that suits him. The heretic thing is also interesting, but wasn’t his first plan.

Xander

TFTC :) Have a great weekend all. Its not that "an X is really an X" isnt a known phrase its just, in context, it didnt really work as written is all. Suggested edits: Ch 1400 “Unique *Lifeform* really do live up to their reputation, huh?” should be "Lifeforms" Ch 1401 "dancing in the *palms* of the" usually its "palm" " had predicted and ** was now curiously" should have a comma after predicted and insert "he" where indicated "to the *god* *Primordial of Karma*" either/or "eternal smile off the Primordial’s ** kept him" missing word "face" "Even so, *if* observing Lord Thayne and the others" from context this should be "through"

Jarrett Glass

I just started a re-read the other day, and I'm still in the tutorial. I had forgotten just how twisted William was during it, but reading those chapters compared to this section now, fantastic character development.

R Mac

I keep forgetting there’s a part of this event that happens outside this central domain. I’m really looking forward to the political/fighting aspect of the territories

Clint

Great chapter. Poor Miranda. Doesn’t Jake have the ability to call her up or send her a message about what’s going on?

SyndaXatrix

I think that could be right on the money for his original hypothesis. I think that would be a really interesting thing to find out. Hopefully he gets a chance to run it back in the 94th era

Xander

To some extent it has to matter but Bill doesnt hate the magic he hates the connection to eversmile and we learned today that maybe he can get some tips from the dao lords. Between that, the sword palace, and Eron I sense a sojourn to the dao sect in our future :D

Ethan Barclay

I dont disagree that people will be shocked if that many people make godhood, but is Casper not a ghost king? meaning the Blightfather thinks he has a high likelihood of making it?

Bi Dailey

I know it wasn't *quite* said outright, but I love the idea that William is only hanging around Jake because he fucks up karma and "fate"

Xander

But william is not blessed hes just heretic. It only works if you are blessed also.

KenTX325

Jake needs to make him a heretic chosen grimwar. I think that may be Eversmiles plan is to get a heretic chosen to see if he can get the same reward in records that Jake is giving the viper.

Xander

Nah ES wanted to experiment with a sociopath since they dont exist in the system. That was mentioned in the early books

Xander

TBF i never had a problem with William. Sure I wouldnt do the same as him and I would have happily fed him feet first into a woodchipper but I can get where he was coming from. Hell I've always wanted him and Lillian to get together since they both have disturbing pasts and iron wills :D

Raymond Whitehead

I love when the chapter starts with What the fuck is jake doing. On another note making Eversmile drop the smile could be cataclysmic. Villy had that conversation with Jake a while back and it could be tied to a transcendent skill for all we know

E

Is… William dope as f*ck now?

Raymond Whitehead

I think Eversmile's original plan was to see the consequences of giving someone with no emotions karmic magic. Cause remember before Casper nearly killed William he was a literal psychopath with no understanding of emotions and his evolutions changed that.

Mitha

This has to be the first POV from William for an eternity. And I can't help to point of that he calls Jake "Lord Thayne". Not the monster or anything, he used the name.

Mitha

Strong feelings can be channeled into curses. Earth has the ingredients for a nice karmic plague by now.

Meadow

My take on it is that feelings don’t matter so much as potential, and that less than what you are actually doing. We’ve seen people on Earth stagnate because they were just doing the same thing every day, trying to fall back into something comfortable, no potential, no effort. William might hate his Path, but he’s still learning, still challenging himself, and so he grows. A Path is your life, if you are comfortable and satisfied with where you are and what you’re doing, your progress will stop unless you go out and do something to challenge that, and keep challenging yourself. TLDR: the System doesn’t reward a status quo, it rewards challenge, your dislike over the challenge doesn’t effect that you will be rewarded for it, but it might effect the rewards

Zizawah

Sorry you hurt your back and hope you get better quickly and have a restful weekend. Thank you for the thought provoking chapter!

Daniel Brian

I could see that. Actually, I think I love that idea! Would be extra cool that he got together with someone else that wears a mask, seeing how Jake was his greatest fear. Character growth! The fact that the Jake thinks he's holding back and that we haven't gotten much of a view of how strong he is in battle, just his endings, makes me think that, like the Eastbound Monk, he's going to have a cool ass battle in the future. Would be even cooler if he fought WITH Jake, instead of against him as an enemy. (Starts to think that William has plucked my karma strings, maybe...🤔)

PatienceHoney

I probably missed something that would have negated my expectation during the second part of this chapter, but I really kept expecting William's alter ego to be revealed as the Eastbound Monk.

Fyrtue

I really like williams character and hope we see more of him in B grade.

zran

Eh, if he somehow manages to make eversmile stop smiling, everyone will know how screwed william is, i remember villy mention a not smilling eversmile is bad news

Ra

Totally! William's redemption arc was too good. I hope he becomes someone super powerful. Where awareness goes, energy flows. The more you pay attention, regardless of whether you hate them or love them, energy flows towards that cause in your head. So it's kinda like William is supplying energy to Eversmile with his hate, making the connection stronger. I don't hate Eversmile either. He's just an interesting character like all the other Gods. The only one I truly despise is El' Hakan.

zran

Well, that is a sign what he kinda respects him now instead of arogantly looking down on him

zran

For that it could require him to be a chosen, and he got rid of the blessing, so he cannot be a "blessed-heretic", besides, that path of jake is partially due to his relationship with the viper, i doubt others could even be able to imitate a portion of it even if they tried mainly due to basically almost everyone kneeling on the presence of a god

C0bra$

Thank u for the story

Coramoor

it's the type of goal that would get William to godhood though

Damascus

That cyclops is such a dick.

John

I bet there are some very angry and hateful gods who would be happy to make their life choices everyone else’s problem

Th3Defiant

Actually, nobody would remember other than Villy. Because Eversmile would wipe all trace of Williams existence (I’m pretty sure that’s what Villy said would happen if Eversmile ever actually used his trump card)

ThatGuy

I think Miranda becomes a god because of all of the records she’s getting and going to continue getting from Jake. Jake would do anything to help her reach god hood to manage everything he doesn’t want to for eternity lol William will most likely become a god. Back in book two villy told Jake the store of what was predicted by all gods who practice divination and that was William was going to be the single survivor of the tutorial and be extremely powerful. No Jake powerful but enough to eventually challenge and beat the king outside of the tutorial. The only thing that could hold William back is the relationship with eversmile. Also no one interesting has died yet. Until zogarth kills someone we like off I would bet they’ll all make god hood because of Jake’s bloodline and all of the boosts he gives those around him as a B grade.

Patryk

Damn y'all gotta shower me with upvotes, I told ya William would do something insane in his own antechamber Edit: plot wise actually one of my favourite chapters, tftc

Meadow

Jake would drop Miranda for someone els if she stopped progressing, it’s her constant drive to keep up with Jake’s unreasonable ass that will driver her to godhood

definitelynotbrjenness

That could make an I teresting story. A bard that unknowingly (at first) empowers people when they gain his attention and pushes them towards the pinnacle if he tells their tale. Good way to use a bunch of what would be short story characters. Occasionally bringing them together keeping the reader guessing how it all comes together in the end and who from the bards tales will survive if you give it a Game of thrones treatment. Turn it into a convoluted mess that could end one hundred different ways with some wanting to kill the bard, some wanting to control him, and others wanting to protect him. In the end, leave them wondering if the bard was an eversmile in disguise and knew what he was doing all along.

definitelynotbrjenness

Miranda, Caleb, and Casper are in my most likely to become gods list. They have pretty consistent paths. Jacob and William are on the "can make God if they don't get killed because of Jake" list. They have a lot plot variability to where they can swing to irrelevant or prominence. As Ra so eloquently stated earlier, where zog's / Jake's / our attention goes, power or death follows.

Jamaal Hill

The interesting thing to me about William is his increasing connection to Jake. Jake's bloodline essentially makes him a heretic and his path spreads heretical attitudes. Jake set William on his path more than any other person besides maybe Ms. Kim. It's possible William eventually adopts Jakes mentality of not revering gods, even primordials, and simply sees karmic magic as power he stole without obsessing over the connection. We've seen Jake take from the legacies of Valdemar and Umbra and feel no strong feelings about it. William may be in a similar spot with Eversmile one day... or he somehow gets Jake to fulfill Yip's dream of being a primordial slayer when he reaches godhood. Gotta keep reaching for horizons right?

definitelynotbrjenness

Ohhhh, a karmic reverse plague. Instead of spreading, it gathers resentment, hatred, and fear of eversmile in order to destroy him.

definitelynotbrjenness

Is William good or evil? Good or evilllllllll? Are my feelings real or is William messing with me. I need to know. I need to knooooooow!!!

Jamaal Hill

Apart from William's feelings about eversmile... karmic magic sounds utterly broken. He's tracked peoplev over long distances, sussed out spies, and now he can create convincing hallucinations while actively killing someone? He just used a high level genjutsu in a free for all. Then we've seen Eversmile give people literal nightmares amd heard that he can delete someone from existence, memory, and records. I hope we get a deeper understanding of how karmic magic works, perhaps through William. Crazy interesting path

joker ledger

William journey is fascinating to watch and funny you dropped this chapter when i just think about how william must have realized everything must be a part of eversmile plan by now. Maybe william should just come out and ask jake for assist or at least, an idea of what Eversmile is planning from villy

Pekka Kohonen

That amount of credits to check whether someone is alive makes absolutely no sense… maybe 5000 and 25000. But the 25000 would still be a huge waste. Jake would only get 250000 for giving up a staff that almost nobody could get (and stay alive afterwards). And which substitutes for a life-saving trump-card skill at the same level as best of his skills. And she just spent like 150000 of the credits for essentially nothing? But I suppose this shows that she has more credits than she can use or knows what to do with. A nice problem to have.

ABTelford

I really liked this chapter, very different. Nice to get a glimpse into Williams head after so long, and nice to see how he’s matured.

definitelynotbrjenness

Rem when William found Dr Kim. There was a discussion of karmic ties being a two way street ... except William had a skill making him immune to backlash fromfrom breaking contracts or sowing bad karma. If eastbound uses karma to reflect damage, William might be the hard counter.

zran

That is assuming he uses his trascendence, when villy talked about his smile was as if it was something worse

zran

A heretic chosen needs the individual be first... You know be a CHOSEN, william dismised the blessing he had when he become heretic, besides, nobody but jake are able to actually pull such thing anyway, since pretty much everyone will kneel at a god presence, be it because it creates too much presure over them or merely due to politeness(when it comes to those affected by jake aura)

R Mac

Yeah he’s basically an illusionist which is an interesting spin on karmic magic

zran

The whole erasing people from existence, records and all is because of his transcendence, so that is something he wont be using lightly aniway

Avery

But if he were already blessed, he wouldn't need a grimoire. I think it would be like winning Villy's challenge dungeon. He'd poof into Eversmile's presence and be like, "Hey, I need your blessing for this class to take."

InfernoDroid

Maybe Eversmile wants his own heretic-chosen

Gracie

tftc! 🧙🏰⚔️

InfernoDroid

I think the reason you're unsure is because Zog is giving his character growth tone to breath, he isn't just saying, "boom, now he's on our side and we trust him" he's giving three world and characters time to change. Also, this chapter makes me think he is on Jake's team fully, even if it's for his own reasons (which is good enough, it's silly to expect others to be in your side for your reasons and not their own. [Tangent: in another series i was reading the MC acts like a petulant child when interacting with a side character who is genuinely trying to set things in motion that will benefit both of them because the MC has to be the only one to benefit from any interaction with this dude character]) so far I don't think Zog has ever lied to the reader when using internal thoughts, so I'm going to take Williams thoughts as true

InfernoDroid

I think William is genuinely on earth's side, and at this point being on earth's side and Jake's side are the same thing essentially. Since time is extremely vauge, to the point of being nearly arbitrary, it's hard to be sure, but i think William has been on Jake's side for several decades now, maybe closing on our surpassing a century (i wish we could get an update on how long it's been since the tutorialeven better would be a timeline) i know with all of the time compression shenanigans Jake is several hundred years old now

R Mac

Yeah at this point they must have hundreds of millions to throw away credits like that. Ultimately I’m not sure what the benefit is. Whether people are alive or not shouldn’t give that much intel when considering her plans on the outside

Don Peligro

Oh man, at first I thought William had become a Chosen again and was concealing it from everyone.

KenTX325

I want Jake to make another grimwar because he needs to use and update that skill. I think William is the best candidate for a heretic skill. It’s possible Eversmile could bless him again. We don’t know how karma works. It’s possible you have to balance things so Eversmile had to screw William over to balance bringing him back to life and teaching him karma magic. It’s possible you have to overcome something to advance and Eversmile has been guiding him the whole time.

Corey Herington

Tftc the Primordial’s (face) kept him going.

Patryk

The only political aspect will soon be 'please attack our neighbour first' directed at all territories that have somebody actually strong left

Casey Fugitt

Eversmile must know jake is a heretic chosen. Since Jake is the vipers heretic chosen eversmile cant studied him too closely, so he wants to create his own for further study

Bob Fight

Ya i think it was one of two things if he stops smiling either his path will break or a attack that has been accumulating since he started smiling will be unleashed which would be pretty scary I don’t think anyone’s ever seen him not smiling since the first era so Willam would be very very dead

Phil Ritter

William being the last feels weird. Is expect at least a few Antichambers having stalemates that can’t be resolved in the little time given. William also seems to make a splendid comeback and at this point I only hope he won’t be recruited by the unknown faction since they may be the only willing and able faction to shield him from Eversmile. I’d love for him to become one of the strongest for the new generation considering his interesting path and there not being any other Karma mages apart from him around. Would be great if he were to become one of the more unaffiliated monsters around like Arnold and the King

Immanuel Medina

I imagine we give it another few books and William will betray Jake. Not sure how or why, but I’m sure we’ll go back to wanting him dead. Maybe not despising him, but wanting him dead

Lynderyn

What a cliff. William hating Eversmile enough to want to become a Primordial Killer was not something I saw coming

definitelynotbrjenness

I won't complain if visiting the emperor for huge gains is repeatable and the real competition is the civ game in the outer world.

definitelynotbrjenness

Who is going to tell eversmile he can't make a heretic his chosen. Willy needs to up the presence resistance so smiley can't force him to do anything, unless the heretic part covers that. However, the benefits for smiley making him chosen would probably be huge and interesting. Just not sure if willy can trust him. Another poss is Jacob being a heretic in the eyes of some of the holy church, but the mother making him a chosen to realign the church.

definitelynotbrjenness

Seeing if an opposing powerhouse is dead would hold value. Splurge on extra defenses when you think they might return.

definitelynotbrjenness

I'm thinking he might be a counter to eastbound reflective skill if that skill is karma related. William has a skill that protects him from karmic backlash if he breaks a contract.

definitelynotbrjenness

I'm leaning that way too, unless villy, Jake, and eversmile can come up with some way to convince William he would be safe (from eversmile fucking with him) if he accepts eversmile true blessing. William's prime driver on his path is revenge against eversmile... what will he become if he loses that? I don't see what will allow him to reach God hood if he gives that up.

Murigi

I feel like William

Tftc

Siethrobo

She has the ability to contact him, but agreed not to while he was in the central domain

Daniel

If William ends up having been disguising himself as the Eastbound Monk in the background the whole time, I’m going to be so happy angry impressed

Carl Never

Littpg con is lit lol you would be the coolest guy here if you showed up zog.

joker ledger

it not that william despise his path but only the karmic magic he learn from Eversmile. I dont think we know what his actual path was. And being a usurper and heretic who hated the god is totally a valid path as the system recognize it. The Eternal servant become a god for being a massive simp for the primordial lol. Any path is valid as long as it had the potential to aim for the top, and William spite for Eversmile and wish to get back at him definitely qualify as he aim to take the primordial down a peg or two.

definitelynotbrjenness

mildly interesting but not very plausible theory: the wonder in its final form will allow younger generations to participate in simulations of key events in the development of the powerhouses of the 93rd universe. path of the primals. they can either learn from yhe legacies or test their paths against them. jake will love having strangers watch him running into trees while practicing shadow vault.

definitelynotbrjenness

he's there in disguise as another author. or better yet, cos playing as a fanatic cosplaying as a character from another series and is making another author nervous because he is constantly showing up. the author doesn't realize that zog being in the super secret discord is how the over enthusiastic fan is always finding him.

definitelynotbrjenness

the meeting with eron is a possible flaw. and william being in an antechamber with the hot shot elf ... uh... holy shit, could he have messed with everybody in the room? and el hakan and yip were victims of william and smiley? how deep does it go? where else can we shoes horn in possible william karma shenanigans? was the tutorial all a plot by the primordials to bring villy out of his domain?

Blake N.

It’d be kinda cool if William also became a Chosen Heratic but with the opposite connotation of how Jake is. Jake is Chosen Heratic cause he sees Villy as a buddy and Villy doesn’t really care what he does. Will could be chosen Heratic because he sees Eversmile as an enemy but that still lets him be chosen since it’s exactly what eversmile wants him to do

definitelynotbrjenness

I can agree if given a little insight into why william is pro earth. 1. has he realized being a supporting character to jake is a path to power? 2. does he see Mrs Kim and mini Kim as family worth protecting? 3. are the powerhouses of earth interesting lifeforms to observe? 4. has he found karmic strength from observing the powerhouses of earth and the way they change the lives of those around them?

definitelynotbrjenness

how many longtime loyal members of major factions are just eversmile clones in disguise?

Michael

Was William Eversmile’s chosen or divine blessing before? Why isn’t he getting another blessing? Surely an extra 10-25% would be great!

Carl Never

I really hope so lol everyone there was great

Adam Scott

I just can’t get it in my head to trust William.

beeve

Or help villy resurrect his family

Dhia

William’s path of revenge will always be a cool side plot. another thing that william could do is adapt a new form of magic that incorporates karmic and metal magic. a form of arcane affinity. also i don’t buy that the special energies of the primordials (malefic, holy, blight) are naturally accruing they are more likely arcane affinities. so maybe as one gets stronger your mana becomes more and more tainted by you until when you reach godhood even fire mana or a basic mana type will transform

Gh0st-Hunt3r

If he gets another blessing i'm pretty sure his Heretic status Would go away and it would hurt his Path with Karmic magic. don't quote me on that that's just what my Thought process went to.

Kevin Watson

i’ve been a William supporter since his side stories, i really wish more characters in-verse could see that he’s genuinely a completely different person than he started and is undeniably a real asset, plus his Gaslighting path sounds extremely cool

Kevin Watson

interesting to see that the Majordomo dislikes William EVEN MORE than he disliked Jake

Shandlar

That lines up with thos chapters new information the most Raymond. I agree. Williams hatred powers his karma just as much if not more than anything else because it's the strength of the connection, not the flavor of it that matters. You can only hate something strongly at a personal level. His lack of emotions were unique to a new integration, and on its surface should have made his karmic magic insignificantly weaker. Eversmile wanted to test that theory and William was likely one of the few humans slated to win his tutorial solo in the new universe with true psychopathy.

Jayrajsinh Chavda

I think William can reach S-grade with this path but not godhood. He would need to make his current path his own and bend it to how he wants, because while someone can become God by following a greater god's path, they still have to add their own element, and even then, they are stuck in the circle of divinity and not even reaching Godkings or Godqueens. And since he is not a follower but also doesn't want to be a heretic either, he can't keep drawing records from Eversmile and improve his own to become God. Just like you said, he will have to confront once and for all everything Eversmile did and plan and make a decision about if wants to be connected or not, and if not, then he has to make that path he's been following his own. Like how Jake is going to make his profession solely his and has started adding his bloodline.

Seen Death

I believe you are correct, although with so many eras that have passed, most unique mana types have already been discovered. And with how knowledge is generally hoarded and gods go unquestioned, no mortals can really remember their origin. There have definitely been countless mana types, but id imagine new types are generally less useful than tbe tried and tested main ones (especially when paths are taken into account - shadow for example being a staple for many of the characteristics / abilities of Umbra etc)

Nikki Smith

William was and perhaps still is scared silly of Jake because Jake killed him at the end of the tutorial. He was a sociopath but has since been cured of it by system mechanics. He now also respects Jake.

phil

great job with the way you are handling Williams character, the character development in this story is better than most I've ever seen.

Jonathan Joestar

I might just be making an odd connection, but similar to Jake's first student, isnt William kinda already Jake's student? Does a onesided beatdown and trauma count as teaching? not really, but it did help William on to growth and the path he's on now. After William confronts Jake, and is given the info on bloodlines. Jake backs off, but allows William into the city (well, Miranda does, but by extension ofc). Now, William on a path of Revenge is just soooo similar to og student, i think there might be a Jake William teacher student arc... or im just insane lmao

Max Patel

I do want to root for William. The fact is, he was a psychopath/sociopath. The system healed him. He's now got empathy and a completely different perspective on life and the world. It doesn't make his previous sins disappear, but the truth is that he's pretty much a different person due to this. Pretty ironic that he's top tier with something like 'karmic' magic though, right? Karma is something that only someone who could genuinely tap into peoples' emotions and relationships could understand. It's like he's becoming the opposite of what he once was, a psychopath. He's become someone who is insanely attuned to the connections and human bonds that people share. To me, even though this guy mercilessly slaughtered hundreds of innocents early on in the emergence of the system... I have to be honest, I want the guy to win. I feel like he's a different person, since he literally wasn't able to comprehend what he can now. He went from psycho to deeply aware empath. All due to the system. It's like his whole inner personality has shifted 180, and now the true version of himself is someone completely unrecognizable compared to who he was initially. The fact being that time is time. The present is the present and no one can change the past. Was William a piece of shit in the past? No doubt. Jake slaughtering him on site was a true act of redemption and universal justice. A good thing. But now? No. I think if the Golden Forest King gets three lives, William should at least be granted the opportunity to have a second. You could even see his death as a true reset. He died. He paid for his sins and the person he was is gone. But who he is now is so unconnected from the person that slaughtered innocents. I want him to become powerful and pursue his agenda. Because now? His agenda isn't bad. He seems like he's become a good dude and I hope to see his path flourish through the many more chapters of story ahead.

That one, right there.

William is the perfect person for Jake’s legacy book. A person with such complex personal thoughts towards his blessing of growing with something he hates and has so little control over it because of the god who allows him to exist with his heretic mindset.

Fylbrom

A Karmic Path created around his desire to erase Eversmiles smile? Yea that's low key terrifying. Also, it kinda makes sense for Eversmile to want to raise up someone to challenge him, so he can grow himself. This seems to be a pattern with god's.
