The atmosphere among the three instantly shifted when the Eastbound Monk brought up the topic of the void ambush. Jake and the Sword Saint quickly shared a look, both having the same question on their mind:

How the hell did he know about that?

Very few were aware it had happened, and as far as they were concerned, it was supposed to stay that way. The Daofather knew, and perhaps some of the Daolords also did, but that shouldn’t explain why the monk had been told anything. Why the hell would they share something with a mortal?

“You seem perplexed,” the monk said before Jake or the Sword Saint even had to say anything. “Understandable. It’s considered confidential, after all.”

“Then how do you know?” Jake asked outright.

“They told me, or at least one of their representatives did. Although they framed it more as an attempt to recruit you than an ambush, with my Patron clarifying the situation after the fact,” the Eastbound Monk answered, once more seemingly way too fucking casual about some rather groundbreaking information.

As far as Jake knew, finding anyone related to this faction was pretty much impossible, especially ones that could communicate, yet the Eastbound Monk claimed to have been contacted.

“You are in contact with them?” the Sword Saint asked skeptically.

“I wouldn’t frame it like that. They approached me once, not that long ago. They wanted to recruit me, as while I suppose they are rather powerful, this mystery faction does lack young talent. Ah, for the record, they also approached Ell’Hakan, but ultimately deemed him too dangerous due to his Bloodline,” the Eastbound Monk explained.

“How do you know all this? Did this recruiter just spill the beans or what?” Jake questioned, super confused by now.

“Surprisingly, yes. Of course, I believe their plan was for me not to survive the encounter should I refuse. As you can see, things didn’t quite go as they’d wanted,” the monk chuckled a bit to himself before turning serious. “But I do question if others have accepted their outstretched hand.”

“Why would anyone do that?” the Sword Saint questioned. “What do they offer to make joining them appealing, knowing that one would make the entire multiverse their enemy?”

“Ah, there, I believe you are wrong,” the monk chuckled. “The vast majority of the multiverse does not care. You care, and the Chosen of the Malefic Viper cares because they targeted you, but why would others? To them, this appears to be just another faction among many. In fact, I’d guess there are many out there who would be ecstatic if a new major faction could rise from the shadows and disrupt the current status quo. Not everyone is happy with how things currently are; Yip of Yore is a brilliant example of this.”

“I get the hate for the current Primordial establishment and all that, but why bring up the topic in the first place?” Jake asked what was perhaps the second-most important question after why the monk knew.

“Because I want you to inform the Malefic Viper and Aeon of what I’ve told you,” the monk smiled. “For my Patron has not.”

Jake and the Sword Saint both frowned as Jake asked a follow-up question:

“Why wouldn’t he?”

“Why not, indeed,” the monk said with a sigh. “If I had to guess, because he isn’t necessarily opposed to what this new faction represents or wants to achieve. Perhaps he’s just curious to see what will come of their existence and doesn’t seek to disrupt them. Either way, I don’t agree. Right now, while the multiverse isn’t exactly peaceful, it is stable. Chaos will only bring more needless suffering.”

“If sharing this with us goes against the wishes of your Patron, won’t doing so cause issues for you after you leave the simulation?” the Sword Saint asked. “When the Viper and my Patron hear from us, it won’t be hard to deduce you were the source.”

“Paradoxically, I don’t believe he will care,” the monk shrugged. “My Path is my own, and he knows my views. Me sharing with you in the wider multiverse under the potential gaze of many would be questioned, but sharing it with only you two who are already deeply involved while within a simulated world will be far more acceptable.”

“It will cause trouble for the Dao Sect, though,” Jake muttered. He knew Villy, and he knew that the snake god wouldn’t be happy learning that a faction that worked with them on the surface was purposefully hiding information. He didn’t think the snake god would outright attack them, but he would definitely be miffed.

“Once more, I find that highly doubtful,” the monk shook his head. “The reason for which I believe is best learned by yourself once you converse with the Malefic One.”

Jake wasn’t quite sure what the monk was getting at, but ultimately just nodded in agreement. He did have more questions, though.

“Did you learn anything else about this faction? Their goals? Any estimate of how powerful they are? Where they might be hiding out?” Jake asked.

“Their goals... to be capable of entering the light, I would guess. I do not know, and everything will be sheer guesswork. That also concerns how powerful I believe they are. Clearly, they do not have anyone with the power rivaling any of the Primordials among them; if they did, why hide away? That they are hiding also naturally means I have no idea where they are, and I’m certain the gods would have far more qualified guesses than I.”

“So, in essence, all you want us to share is that this faction has been actively recruiting young geniuses, with you among them?” the Sword Saint asked. “Isn’t that odd, though? Why did they only approach you, Jake, and, as you said, potentially Ell’Hakan? None of the others from the top spots on the Nevermore Leaderboards have mysteriously died as far as I know, and I doubt all these people successfully survived rejecting their recruiter. Unless you’re implying several of these top spots are now occupied by secret agents of this mystery faction.”

Jake was wondering for a second what the Sword Saint was getting at before he realized. The monk had already been deceitful once, so why outright trust what he was saying? Thinking about it, if what he said was true, it was weird why he hadn’t heard of anyone dying or getting exposed as newly recruited agents.

“Ah, but that is the devious part of their scheme I haven’t shared yet. How they recruit people,” the Eastbound Monk said with a smile. “Because even those who have been recruited will not know. It’s rather insidious if I say so myself.”

Now Jake was once more confused, and the Sword Saint gave a look that very much demanded elaboration.

“I’m not entirely clear on the details; all I can say is that their recruitment involves a rather unpleasant soul-related experience. I was infected by something that sought to take root within my soul, but I fought it off. During the infection process, I felt it merge with me, and if it had fully become one with my soul, I wouldn’t even have questioned its existence. I fear others might indeed be infected and just not know it. Not even gods can detect it either, as not even they can forcibly gaze into the Soulspace of another,” the Eastbound Monk actually explained, though it did make Jake a little skeptical.

“I have never heard of anything or anyone being able to forcibly implant something within someone’s Soulspace. It goes against the fundamental rules of the system,” Jake pointed out.

“Unfortunately for us, Transcendent Skills can bypass those rules to some extent,” the monk shook his head. “But you are right, and it’s not perfect. That’s also why their first approach seems to be to convince someone to join, as willingly accepting the infection will be far more straightforward. Alongside one other major flaw... some people are immune. Namely, those with Transcendent Skills and Bloodlines. Your souls are already altered, and in the same vein that a slave contract cannot affect you, neither can this infection. Ah, I learned this part from my Patron who analyzed the remnants of the infection on me.”

“And you’re saying that no other Primordial besides the Daofather knows this?” the Sword Saint continued questioning the monk, still looking skeptical.

“Precisely. Though I do agree with that decision,” the Eastbound Monk said. “Doubting everyone is a good way to create chaos, especially in a world where no one can confirm the truth about whether someone is infected or not.”

“What exactly is this infection?” Jake asked, choosing to believe the monk for now. “What does it do?”

Jake’s imagination was already running wild, imagining movies with body snatchers, parasites controlling one’s mind, and a whole bunch of other utterly cataclysmic scenarios.

“That I cannot tell you. All I know is that when infected, it has the ability to make one forget the infection,” the monk shook his head.

“Any guesses?” Jake followed up.

“Many, but none I have any confidence in,” the monk sighed. “But I can say that the effect can’t be too invasive, lest it would be detectable by powerful gods. Perhaps it allows communication, or for the one in charge of the infection to manifest power within the victims, possibly to kill or coerce them. Not that unlike a Blessing in that regard, I guess, though without the powerful karmic bond.”

“But you don’t know, and it’s even a possibility that there is no true infection, but you were just made to believe there was to sow chaos,” the Sword Saint said. “Or, you could be lying.”

“I could for sure, but why would I?” the monk asked, not seeming offended in the slightest. “In either case, I know you will inform your Patrons of what I told you today, and they will be able to confirm or debunk my claims.”

The Sword Saint slowly nodded, not disagreeing with that statement. He still looked very critical of the monk’s claims, while Jake’s immediate reaction was that he was telling the truth, and if he was... yeah, that had some unsettling implications. As he heard the explanation, a thought also struck as he asked:

“Have the two of you encountered a Virtual Mind Devourer here in the World of the Exalted Prima?”

He knew the Sword Saint hadn’t, but he still asked both of them not to make it sound as if he was singling the monk out. As for why he asked about the Virtual Mind Devourer... the talk about this infection making one forget being infected reminded him way too much of that creature. The more he thought about it , the more he also questioned why such a thing had existed in this virtual world in the first place. Everything else, as far as he could tell, was somewhat based in reality and what could be found in the real world, so what’s to say the Virtual Mind Devourer wasn’t?

What if this creature, or at least something with a somewhat similar ability, existed out there? Or what if the creature had been born from the Records of a similar Transcendence? If that was the case, his encounter with this Virtual Mind Devourer definitely hadn’t just been a coincidence.

“I have not,” the Sword Saint shook his head.

“Neither have I,” the monk also answered. “Nor is it a creature I have heard about before. Now it’s my turn to wonder; why do you ask?”

Jake threw the Sword Saint a look, and the old man didn’t shake his head or indicate Jake probably shouldn’t share, so he shared his experience while fighting for the ambiguously-leafed golden flowers back in the Outer Garden.

Once he was done, the monk was frowning and looking deep in thought before he spoke. “Even imagining such a creature is unsettling, and if its existence has any basis in reality, I can understand why you asked me.”

The three of them were quiet for a moment, all digesting their conversation for a few seconds before the Sword Saint let out a sigh. “Ultimately, all we can do is speculate, and all the decisions will be made by our Patrons and factions. This is a matter far beyond us B-grades. Given that, let us focus on what we all came here to do.”

Yet again, the atmosphere shifted as they all naturally knew what the Sword Saint was getting at. While it was a very enlightening chat, they hadn’t come there to talk, but to decide which Administrator would be the last one standing.

“So how do we wanna do this?” Jake asked, cracking his neck while feeling a bit excited. He was tempted to offer that the two of him could come at him together, not because he had any confidence in winning, but because he thought it would be interesting to see how long he could last against both of them.

“Seeing that the monk has a preference for pacifism, surely he isn’t interested in fighting the two of us, but would gladly bow out?” the Sword Saint said, throwing a bit of a cheeky smile the Eastbound Monk’s way.

“I would indeed prefer not to fight the two of you,” he nodded before letting out a sigh. “But as I spoke of earlier, I’m here because I was tasked to be, and my task includes doing as well as I can. If that includes fighting you two, I have little choice but to do so, though, again, I would prefer not to. I assume it would be insulting if I asked the two of you to surrender or perhaps duel for second place?”

“That would indeed be very rude,” the Sword Saint confirmed before looking at Jake. “Unless you suddenly experienced a massive shift in personality, I assume you don’t have any intentions of surrendering either?”

“I would be angry if you two surrendered,” Jake stated bluntly.

“Now that sentiment I can agree with,” the Sword Saint chuckled. “I guess that’s all that needs to be said. None of us are willing to surrender, so let us settle this the old-fashioned way.”

“So it seems,” the monk sighed before looking to the sky. “I hope this shall not sow unnecessary discord. Know that I act without malice, and have nothing against the two of you. I can only ask for forgiveness.”

“No hard feelings here,” the Sword Saint said, putting his hand on the handle of his sword.

“Never gonna bear a grudge over a good bout,” Jake smiled as he slightly bent his knees, ready to move at a moment’s notice.

“Thank you,” the monk said with a relieved smile. “Then I shall act.”

The monk slowly raised his hand as a khakkhara – an intricate golden staff with metal rings hanging loosely from it - appeared in it. Before Jake or the Sword Saint could move, he slammed it into the ground as the sound of the clashing rings sent out a shockwave, propelling Jake and the Sword Saint away. In an instant, the monk’s aura had immediately shifted from weak and nonthreatening to just downright mysterious, as Jake still couldn’t get a proper read on him.

But, hey, at least he could see with his own eyes that the monk’s hype wasn’t all for nothing, as the sky was filled with golden scripture, the Eastbound Monk standing there, seemingly ready to face both of them at once.

Going on break a day early? So we get a chapter on the 8th? S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y, chapter, yay!

Daniel

Man, part of me wants him to be an agent of chaos spreading lies to sow distrust amongst the big bads, and then more of me wants him to be just this really cool character that pushes everyone to new heights just based on what’s about to happen the next week or so

J

Damn Tftc that’s was a good one

BumAssBumAss

Wait a minute. With the staff appearing in the monk's hand, this dude suddenly reminds me of Tang Sanzang from journey to the west... Except he is east?

Suzanne Pearson

And the plot thickens……. I bet Jake can see the infection with his gaze, now that he knows to look for it…..

Author Azraeil

Jake: honestly I'd be more mad if you didn't fight me

Sayjinlord

Thanks for the chapter

Fdrugc

Tftc I thought they were about to do rock paper scissors.

Bunny

Tftc

Mick Gormley

Does this mean the monk has a transcendent skill? At least I’m not sure of any other way he could remember and reject the offer

Jana

I wonder if Eron could see the Soulparasite. He can directly see Soulsparks and since it’s a Bloodline it may be able to circumvent certain restrictions. Good thing he’s immune too.

djthomp

Oh great, the virtual mind devourer (or equivalents thereof) really do exist out in the Multiverse making people forget them. Fascinating yet horrifying information to learn. I'm going to venture a guess though that Jake's presence immunity that he shares with those around him will also have the effect of making people immune to the soul infection. Hopefully so at least, otherwise we'll be stuck in a position of not being able to trust basically anybody. The big fight at last!

Remify

Nice !

Fyrtue

Unsettling implications indeed. The sheer potential scale of this faction is wild. Keep in mind they had numerous gods on their side which could have been similarly infected as well. Eversmile in particular is going to be giddy trying to get to the bottom of it all and understand how the karma works.

Bookb0y

Can’t wait for this fight

definitelynotbrjenness

I just saw the alert, but the title made me believe the jellyfish saga was starting on royal road. The malefic author is not a villain to be taken lightly. Remain alert at all times!!!

Lemonsqueezy

Very interesting, I didn't put the void ambush and the mind devourer together. Interesting development. The three-way bout begins. It makes sense for Jake to win because he is the protagonist. Zog could throw a wrench in the story and actually have him lose. Jake and SS could team up, but that really isn't the style Jake would want. I see a true 3-way free for all happening. The question is whether the final fight will be a rematch between SS or the final fight with EBM, with a similar situation that happened with Caleb where he wounds EBM before dying. We can also have a situation where the Emperor stops the fight after either determine a winner or has all three win in a draw.

ShadowFox

Fight time! Yippee! Thanks for the chapter!! <3

Lemonsqueezy

We have two more chapters this week and hopefully it ends before Zog goes on vacation.

Catrina

The monk didn't say what the person he met with looked like. If they tried to infect him, it had to be the actual person with the trandcendant ability there?

Justin

So EBM started referring to his “patron” but last chapter he pointedly said he came to this event on behalf of his “teacher”. With the implications this shadow organization recruits young talents, could he be lying and in fact did accept their offer?

J W

Eron seems like the kind of person who would take the deal if he thought this group could help him end death. I wouldn't trust that dude

Ra

You take that back! Tom is pretty fabulous.

J W

How dare you

definitelynotbrjenness

I didn't expect monk boy to be a ranged fighter. I guess it makes sense with peeps not knowing how he killed. 27.8976432% chance monk, daofather are full of poop and this chapter was all lies.

Babtain

"He was tempted to offer that the two of him could come at him together" two of him ---> two of them.

TennTitan

Villy might know of them, since his memories are eternal thanks to his bloodline. Even if he doesn’t his bloodline is kind of a hard counter given they wouldn’t be able to make him forget anything.

Xander

TFTC :) 7(maybe). Figured you might take this opportunity to straighten out the chapter numbers :D Suggested edits: "Sword Saint *instantly* shared a look" repetitive. try"quickly" instead. "perhaps some of the *Daolord* " should be "Daolords", right? "How do you know all *that*" "this" would be more usual. "won’t *do* so cause issues for" should be "doing" " is the *insidious* part I haven’t" you use thisagain very soon after, Perhaps "subtle" or "devious" "Now it’s my *time* to wonder; " feels like this should be "turn" "ground as the *ringing* of the clashing *rings* sent" repetitive phrasing. Perhaps "reverberations" or "chiming"

UNKNOWN

No, he just got good. And fought off the parasite.

Mat

Okay, that is a good way to cement the next big bad and what is at stake

Gavin Smith

From my understanding he doesn’t. His control over his soul is just extremely strong and was able to fight the infection without the need for a skill or bloodline. Cause if he had a TS or BL then the infection wouldn’t have even been able to take hold.

Aluskyna Araryn

I farted. Now I feel better. Yay! ☺️☺️☺️

UNKNOWN

Are Risen, vampires, and dead holy church members immune? Cause their soul has also been altered.

Indomitable

Do you guys think zog reads the comments? I've never ever seen him respond to a comment, lol. And if he does, I wonder if he changes stuff he had planned based on what people are commenting

John Barber

What happens after you journey West though, you return East. (Ignoring possibilities of circumnavigation ofc)

definitelynotbrjenness

Alexa... give me the coordinates for every device in Denmark that googled "martial arts staff with rings" in the last 48 hours. Alexa? Alexa are you listening?

Sombrelune

Tyftc! Time for Jake to taste real defeat for the first time. I’m guessing he’ll lose without being able to understand how since moment of the primal hunter is probably still on cooldown.

Jana

We can all but speculate about how he’ll react but from how he reacted to Ell’hakan and the fact that he wants to work with the Viper - I’d don’t think he’ll be all to happy with those guys.

Kendra M

100% immediately thought of him and Kindroth with that great light elemental behind him because of the "go into the light" comment.

NicN

Tftc

Gracie

tftc! 🧠🐍🏹

Siethrobo

So we learned the Monk doesn't have a transcendent skill or bloodline. That's a pretty big deal right? I'd assume most people on the top of the nevermore leaderboard had one of those... Actually maybe not. I believe SS is the only confirmed transcendent of this generation. And the only bloodlines (of this generation) we've known about are Aaron, Jake and orange fuck. I guess I assumed a greater density of them overall since Earth had 2.

IntenseSushi

Tftc they better not infect sylphie

Dave

Tftc

Dave

He’s a lot more active on discord.

Dave

What if the infection takes ahold of them once they die.

Kaladorph

Man. Monks and their scriptures.

Totes

The hype for EBM is immense. Looking forward to the fight!

C0bra$

Thank u for the story

Christophe H.

Tyftc and yeah good way to finally see the daofather!

Loststar7

Thanks for the chapter. LETS GET READY TO RUMMMMBBBBLLLLLEEEEE!!!!!

Staudi

Tyftc!

WhiteLeeopard

The idea that a random char (monk) knows more about the viper than Jake is insulting at this point in time. Perhaps that wasn't what was implied, but it was my takeaway, as even if pacts of old exist that has nothing to do with feelings (such as anger).

James Evans

i thought there was some bloodline accords everyone agreed to and having one turn on that doesn’t sound good for them. when they tried to take jake it was for his bloodline.

R Mac

I feel like William would be one of the few able to detect or stop that infection. He might end up being the key to whatever Jake’s investigation is, given William’s ability with karma magic

Hayden Leech

Don’t be inane. If you walk west long enough you’ll fall off the plate!

R Mac

Back when it was introduced I speculated that the world wonder revealed it on purpose, because it relates to whatever the shadow organization is doing. I’m even more convinced now

The Art of Pedantry

Ah, but imagine if Villy wanted to forget certain memories despite his bloodline. Especially since the bloodline is also a curse to an extent. I imagine Villy would want to seek such a creature out just to determine if it were possible.

Patryk

I'm a bit perplexed, don't the Bloodline Accords force Daofather to share his information? At least when Villy would ask personally

Miotara

Any guesses on who will win? I'm leaning towards the Eastbound monk, mostly because he's been hyped up quite a bit as kund of an antagonist

Rewdan

Now that’s interesting 🧐. I wonder what Villy will think and do?

Patryk

Also it's very interesting in the light of Daofather's Nevermore invitation - I believe he mentioned something about Records converging or something coming, so he might have known more all this time?

Rewdan

Wait I thought that Tom is Tom

Rewdan

Perception is the best stat

The Art of Pedantry

I'm also waiting for Jake's ability to see the lines in the virtual world to come into play. It's either gotta come into play for this fight or it'll come into play for something within the hundred years after. It could even be the deciding factor that gives Jake control of the world wonder eventually. Unless it's all just karma. That'd be a little disappointing because it's always cool to see Jake do something new that baffles the gods. But if it is karma, that also has long lasting impacts outside the simulation and karma wouldn't make Jake suddenly skyrocket to...heck what adjective works here? Ungodly? Levels of power. He'd have to grow as "naturally" as he has been but he'd have a new tool to work with. Now...if these lines Jake can see are related to a mind devourer related entity... Especially if that entity is the Emporer's father...that'd be truly fascinating.

Rewdan

I agree Jake is going to squish that cheating Monk guy

Lemonsqueezy

The system is interesting. I have long had a theory that the system is specifically grooming Jake for something grand. There are just too many factors where Jake just happened to get something he needed through system fuckery. His over-powered bloodline, meeting and bringing the Villy out of seclusion while in the tutorial, Jake changing the outcome Eversmile had predicted for the tutorial, Jake's primal origin energy, Jake merging with Shadow Jake, Jake getting the boots and meeting The First Sage (which is forbidden info), being a heretic without actually being labeled as one, Jake being able to change and/or merge skill selections during upgrades, and Jake getting access to the Gate of Enlightenment as a B-Grade (something only God and S-Grades are meant to accomplish. All of these are events that had to be manipulated directly by the system, or be allowed by the system to be manipulated by Jake's bloodline. There is just too much coincidence for it to not be something the system wanted to happen. My theory is that the end of this story will be Jake becoming the system itself, like the system's successor. Maybe there is like a board of people that are selected from each era to join. That or one person from each era is selected and groomed to run the integration of the next Era. I believe this happened to the First Sage, who has been tasked with preparing Jake. Sorry for the rant.

Rewdan

Did you ask Siri?

Rewdan

A 3 way 👀

Biggy smalls

That’s not what I heard. He said that if you have a bloodline or a transcendent skill this infection has a hard time working. Which makes me think he has a hidden transcendence.

Lemonsqueezy

That is entirely possible. However, Sandy is aware and controls it

Jasper

There's still that strange primeval origin blast he used to destroy the image of Valdemar back in Nevermore, so he might still be to pull something out of his back pocket.

Evan

Okay I don’t normally comment but I have a theory. What if Jake DID get infected, but it attacked his eternal shadow instead? And that’s why it has been acting weird lately??? Also super stoked to see this fight play out thanks for the chapter!

Benjamin Mages

If even gods can't detect it, even if told to look for it, there is absolutely no way Jake can. You full well know that even the absolute most pathetic god in the multiverse has perception that far exceeds him. He's only B-rank.

Alex Lane

I think with Eron it depends on if the infection looks beautiful or not. He thought the Vampire sparks look disgusting but I think liked undead if I remember right. Man loves his sparks.

Meadow

Man the Eastbound Monk is starting to remind me of Defiance of the Fall and their monk faction, and not because of the monk similarities.

Mitha

"so let us settle this the old-fashioned way.” I was really hoping for rock-paper-scissors here.

Zander P

Great call. And from what I remember, Villy and Worm god were blocked from hearing what was said in that moment, suggesting that Dao has been actively been obscuring certain things for a while

Clint

Hopefully you land on one of the elephants.

Clint

Don’t be silly. Tom is Tom.

Clint

And if he had a bloodline or transcendence, Jake or SS would be able to detect it.

Clint

Brilliant timing. The chapters where with the void ambush are in the book that just released. 😀 I usually read the released books front to back (and usually start with rereading the previous book), but I’m going to have to make an exception this time.

Clint

Jake does seem to have some special ability to interact with the true soul… but he’d probably need permission to actually go in and check, like with the demon ritual.

Clint

Brilliant timing! The void ambush chapters are in the book that was released today.

T

Eastbound always on the road to an new sunrise

Yami

Yeah eron apears to be controlled by his bloodline

Yami

If even a transcendent skill can not do it, i doubt anythink can

Botond Nyitrai

He is 100% set up for something big. This might just be it

Benjamin Mages

His way of doing so isn’t unique; when he did it with the demon prince the gods were only surprised that he’d do it not that it could be done. If diving into a soul is how to find the infection you’d think that more people could do it. Heck maybe that is how you tell; if you didn’t know about the infection you’d probably wouldn’t just dive into random people’s souls to check.

Bryandbc01

Now we know what the next big arc will be. I’m guessing it lasts at least until Jake’s into A grade.

definitelynotbrjenness

Could snappy have defeated yip? I lean very slightly to yes. support for both sides, but time and path has me leaning to snappy. on a side topic, it would be interesting to get bits of snappy's feelings towards jake as it shifts from distrust of the potentially troublesome human, to acceptance, to respect, to trust similar to what he has for Duskleaf, to faith second only to his faith in villy.

BuckleYoPants

Man I reaallly want to see Jake get put on the backfoot and have to fully unleash his bloodline. Especially so since we haven't seen it since Nevermore and he is in a simulation so it wont affect his real body's store of Jake Juice.

Fore stumbler

Any matt smith dr. Who fans? The silence any one?

Biggy smalls

No Snappy wasn’t strong enough. He’s only like his second or 2 empryean step. Which is very impressive but Yip was more talented and on like his 6th or so step. While we don’t know exactly what that means yet I’d imagine it be like Jake killing a mid tier S grade.

The 49th Khan

"And you’re saying that no other Primordial besides the Daofather knows this?" Did anybody say anything about EM being backed by the Daofather? Or was that a clever way to gather information by the SS.

Zephyreis

You know, there was that one scene where Eron said something about the spark that connected them all when shaking hands with one of the dao people, I’m willing to bet that this parasite is exactly what that was

Biggy smalls

Jake. Jake after a couple skill upgrades and unleashing his Bloodline fully. I wouldn’t mind if it’s mutual destruction. They all kill eachother but Jake Ekes out a victory. In a similar fashion as the Demon just did over FK. Jake has enough time to get his rewards for winning this. And maybe a brief bit of commentary with the Emperor before he keels over dead.

Kaladin

I'll be surprised if Villy knows nothing about them though.

Alex

No, I think that’s something else. Back in Eron’s first chapter in the tutorial, it suggests that he turned dead people into homunculi by filling them up with his spark. Villy also says at one point that he thinks Eron has multiple health pools. I believe Eron’s insane regenerative abilities are the result of him forcibly linking his health pool with other people, effectively turning them into walking health batteries.

Alex

In Jake’s initial testing he found that the actions of his simulated self didn’t effect his real body, but they did have a lasting effect on his simulacrum: When he used some of his simulacrum’s Primeval Origin Energy it had no effect on his real Primeval Origin Energy reservoir, but it did have a lasting effect on in his simulated reservoir, even after he left and re-entered the simulation. If he fully unleashes his Bloodline it shouldn’t affect his real body, but it might permanently fuck up his simulacrum, which would cripple him for the remainder of the system event.

Alex

This feels inconsistent; the god who lead the ambush against Jake in the Void said something to the effect of “we weren’t going to harm you, but we were definitely going to kill everybody else.” That indicated they were only interested in Jake, which implied they wanted his Primeval Origin abilities. If this group is looking for young talents, why did they dismiss the King, Sylphie, Dina, and the Sword Saint?

Ian Hartman

I know its going to end up being a variety of the mind devour one that has asended to primordial there path is all about making people forget i could see one being real old

Daniel Francis

Downloaded 16, 'read' it and returned to KU with a review.

Alex

From what I understood, Yip was at the peak of the Empyrean Steps and was trying to kill Villy as a way to break through to whatever comes afterwards. Snappy doesn’t seem to have reached the final Empyrean Step yet, so it’d be like having someone who was in the Circles of Divinity fight against a Godking. Not necessarily impossible, BUT, Yip was also a genius, so Snappy would be fighting up against someone who was more talented than him. Maybe if Yip was running on fumes after fighting Villy it would have been possible, but it would definitely have been a huge uphill battle. Also, when Villy shows Yip his true power, Yip says something like “so there is another stage”. This at LEAST confirms that Villy is beyond the Empyrean Steps, but I think it might suggest that he’s gone beyond the stage after that too. Yip was trying to break through to the stage beyond the Empyrean Steps, so he KNEW there was a stage after the Steps and he wouldn’t have been surprised about it. To my mind, Yip saying “so there is another stage” only makes sense if Villy proved there’s a stage beyond what comes after the Empyrean Steps.

I think we'll get other perspectives these next too chapters. I imagine this 3 way is going to take at least 8 chapters (unless some BS happens that makes it lodiff for one of them) and it doesn't make sense for Zog to start a long fight right before break

Kudon

Hells, at least the Orange Fuck was a looming threat we understood and saw coming. This new ark is making me genuinely nervous and excited

Suzanne Pearson

Hey Zog, thanks for that highly entertaining recap! And I’m glad you haven’t forgotten about the heart and yip yummy!

Chris Layman

They can't force him directly, but they can use his friends as leverage

Xander

Zog replies to comments all the time. Ok its mostly to correct spelling mistakes rather than "Well done for noticing that hint" but still

Trumangolorian

Sooooooo is this like a soul seed type thing from HWFWM? Tyftc Zogi. Better not leave us on a huge cliffhanger next week. I doubt I can wait almost a month without knowing who wins lolol.

definitelynotbrjenness

have you ever wondered what jacob divined to convince him to go along with the church's plans just enough to ensure they got kicked out of the milky way?

Just got back from fall of 2028 after reading the conclusion of the mystery faction arc. the fight is awesome. most of the major and second tier factions join under jake in an attempt to fight off the invasion of venus. oh yeah, they come through venus to get into the 93rd without having to fight gods. Anyway, elites battle while massive armies try to cordon off the fight to prevent the mystery faction to get access to the 93rd and spread the infection. despite the help of the a grades of venus, the mystery faction defeats them. big snake is the hero that sacrifices himself to allow jake's forces to escape. bog boss is awesome too. frog lich is a traitor. Anyway, jake prepares another defense outside of venus. with the power of the mystery faction that cab leave venus limited by the system. at first the battle looks rough, but everything is going surprisingly well. too well. jake feels something is off. he notices his elites escaping what looks like certain death time and time again. and then he sees them. hundreds of hobgoblin hidden in time. the blessed of Aeon stepping out of hiding during frozen moments of time to move people to safety. they defeat the invasion. eversmile locates where the mystery faction accessed venus. artemis leads a group of gods into Venus to clean it up and villy and vally go with eversmile and the seeker to hunt down the mystery faction leadership and find proof that the lifesoul daolord was behind it all. big bird hears what has happened and incinerates a few infected galaxies.

picture a pin wheel (those things that spin on sticks) now imagine the system multiverse being one spinning. the universes in the center are always part of the system, but as you move out the universes spend time as part of the system and time outside of the systems influence. Rise and fall of civilizations. Myths. Legends. Grand ancient structures that can't be explained. wide spread knowledge of dragons and other magical creatures. Forever alternating between magic and technology or giant beasts ruling the planets. no idea why I thought of that or why I thought you might be interested in seeing it.

William WIlson

I was wondering if jake could see it while using primal gaze.

Ok, so..... "was infected by something that sought to take root within my soul" ....I'm getting a [Star-Seed] vibe here 🤔 for those of you who don't know a star seed is an artifact used by Great Astral Beings in "He who fights with monsters" It's a transcendent ranked item that can be implanted into a Host and has to be accepted to gain access to your soul! Once you do, it takes root spreading thin metal tendrils throughout your body and then the GAB that it belongs to can inhabit you, take you over, or end your existence with a thought if you try to betray them. I love this chapter!! i was Expecting the EBM to know some shit but not this much. I cant wait to see Villy's reaction to this Info for sure, and I really can't wait to see who is infected lol otherwise why state that those who are infected dont even know they are. I Bet villy or even eversmile will come up with some way to tell if someone is infected. Question? what about those who accepted the infection? do they know there infected? so much to unpack this chapter YAYYYYYYY!

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Also Any guesses on whos infected guys ? im gonna give it a good think and edit this comment with my guesses. 😁💯

Gh0st-Hunt3r

hahahaha i completely pictured this while reading it and WOW!!!..... Awesome

Gh0st-Hunt3r

your killen me right now 🤣🤣🤣🤣💯

Gh0st-Hunt3r

I said the same shit 🤣🤣🤣💯 It sounds almost like a [Star-Seed] RIGHT!!! go check out my comments there the newest ones

Gh0st-Hunt3r

First of all Why is there a [Hidden Comment] ??? never seen that on here before. and 2 good question, If I had to guess ( And I Am Guessing) I would say Dina And the sword saint didn't get recruited because of this statement by the Eastbound Monk-[ "Alongside one other major flaw... some people are immune. Namely, those with Transcendent Skills and Bloodlines. Your souls are already altered, and in the same vein that a slave contract cannot affect you"] Apparently those with a Bloodline or Transcendance Are unable to be infected. as for sylphie i don't know? What if she is one of the ones who are infected and doesn't know >????

Gh0st-Hunt3r

I think it also needs to be said that there hasn't been ANY mention for a long time now about Erons journals that He VERY specifically asked Jake to give to Villy!! what if erons a part of this faction or encountered it and there is some pertinent info in there about them?? I know its a long shot but I've really wanted to to hear about what's in those journals for a LOOOOONG time now jus sayin.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Nahh.... 1. Jake has a Bloodline So no infection 2. Even if having a bloodline wasnt a factor his bloodline would STILL let him know and the bloodlines EGO wouldn't allow it Thump...Thump..

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Jake for the win for sure.... Hes going to pull some Bloodline, Primeval Origins, Eternal hunger, Event horizons Quatrain on the EBM & SS 🤣🤣💯 For Sure!

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Yeah great Catch my dude way to make us think for sure

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Oooooooooooooooo !!!! I didnt even think of this EEEeek I really hope not seriously!

Gh0st-Hunt3r

[R Mac] nah i dont think so my dude the infection has the power to make you forget your even infected

Gh0st-Hunt3r

100000000000000000000000000% Agree with this statement

Alex

Eron also told Jake that there was a person who managed to attain immortality before ascending to godhood, making them the multiverse's only 'immortal mortal', and he should ask Villy about it. That was either back in the treasure hunt or one of the city floors in Nevermore. Either way, Jake has DEFINITELY forgotten about it.

Sorenth

Sigh... Artemis is infected, isn't she?

Alex

If gods can't detect this soul parasite due to its transcendent origins, there's no way Primal Gaze would.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Maybe the Eastbound monk is Baiting Jake somehow 🤔 So they can get another shot at Snatching Jake 🤔

Trumangolorian

Star seed that is the correct item, thank you. Did think soul seed wasnt exactly right.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

Alex- Yeah, We need a "Jake's Storage Space" Chapter lol or an episode of -Storage Wars Jake Thayne Edition- he really has a bad habit of Tossing shit in there and forgetting it exists 🤣 didn't villy have to tell him to look in his storage space once before? I was wondering how Villy knew since Noone can see what's in others Storage spaces but then i remembered -Villy has a Bloodline that makes it so he NEVER forgets anything or remembers EVERYTHING and since he has an Avatar essentially watching Jake TV 24/7 if he sees Jake throw something g in he will never forget it 😉

Gh0st-Hunt3r

😆 as soon as he explained it I was Like Nooooo! No way! My mind went nuts thinking about all the possibilities, whos infected, who did and didn't accept it, is it gonna Blow them up like in HWFWM when they realize it's in them, can the one who implanted it see through them, can they be inhabited like a puppet and make them do things like attack and kill people or kidnap them etc... the possibilities are endless AHHHHHHH

Gh0st-Hunt3r

yeah, my belief is that Eron's whole path is Antagonistic to these Mysterious fucks for sure. He believes in Preserving all life sparks and any infiltration of said sparks is going to Piss him right the fuck off for sure! That could also be my own feelings on the matter coloring that statement but I still believe Eron isn't gonna like this one bit.

Alex

iirc Eternal Shadow is essentially the fusion of Sim Jake and Eternal Hunger. Sim Jake had the Bloodline, so Eternal Shadow probably shares Jake’s immunity. The Records of Eternal Shadow originated from the Seat of the Exalted Prima; I think it’s behaving weirdly because it’s returned to its Origin.

Gh0st-Hunt3r

One last Question then I'm done commenting on this chapter ......... Ok so the EBM said -" I believe their plan was for me not to survive the encounter should I refuse. As you can see, things didn’t quite go as they’d wanted" How in the Actual fuck did he Survive the encounter?? he never said how? the only way i could see it going is Mysterious Faction-"Hey wanna join" EBM-"Nah Man im good" MF-" Well here have this infection" EBM-"you can try cosmic traveler but I am a humble monastic practitioner who harmonizes both living spaces and internal energies and since My spiritual practice strictly forbids violence I do not throw punches I only throw negative energy out of windows to maximize your wealth sector. I am so deeply centered that tectonic plates use me to recalibrate themselves. I am also incredibly polite, but please do not mistake my good manners for modesty. I am objectively, divinely spectacular at what I do. Now, let us adjust that armchair. Your current seating arrangement is a violent assault on your prosperity corner, and my peaceful soul simply cannot abide it." MF-"???.......(Infects the EBM" EBM-" "I have spent 300 years learning to control my own mind. What made you think you could do it in five seconds?" Then somehow He survives?? HOW??

Alex

As a signatory to the Accords, the Daofather is compelled to enforce them — either in person, or by sending some of the Daolords as proxies — but I don’t think that applies here. When Jake was ambushed in the Void, it was assumed that the kidnappers wanted to exploit his Primeval Origin abilities — which is a violation of the Accords — but there wasn’t any explicit evidence to prove that was their motivation, it was just the explanation which made the most sense given they were after Jake specifically. What the Daofather learned from the Eastbound Monk suggests that they might have wanted Jake for his talent rather than his Bloodline. In that case the attack wasn’t a violation of the Bloodline Accords at all, voiding any obligations they might otherwise have imposed upon the Daofather. To be clear; this entire matter with the shadow faction hasn’t actually infringed upon the Bloodline Accords — yet — because the group hasn’t actually broken any of its rules, it just LOOKED like they were going to since they were after Jake. Given that he’s not being compelled by the Bloodline Accords, the Daofather is within his rights to pull a stunt like this, and he’s one of the few people who has the power to get away with it.

Alex

I think the EBM is implying that he knows more about how Villy will react to the Daofather’s actions than Jake does, which wouldn’t surprise me. Jake and Villy haven’t had a single conversation on-screen about the Daofather, so it’s safe to assume that Jake doesn’t really know what kind of relationship Villy and the Daofather have.

Bobo

Love the callout to the Eastbound Monk in the start…

Nijex

Jake can astral project into other soul spaces… I also bet the mysterious enemy is going to be related to the faction that took villys wife and kids. Maybe even the implant ability is related to her bloodline

Rob Lyon

@JW I definitely agree and I suspect he may even end up being a big bad at some point in the series

DefinitelyNotMinaga

Canon material always beats theories and fan fiction. I cannot imagine a scenario with different dialogue or imagined implications. I want to unravel the mysteries of the system and Zog's omnipotent aura. I believe the First Sage is the biggest thing to theorize on, why does he know what he knows, how did he make it possible, was it intentional.. the new faction... is it about who leads it or it's intention.. or about the concept of oblivion. Does it relate to the Viper's loss, or the erasure of something ORIGINS could bring back. DETAILS DETAILS. 🐍

DefinitelyNotMinaga

Thanks for totally ignoring the Ultimate Minaga Arc of 2027....😢

DefinitelyNotMinaga

What we need is more elaboration on these circles of divinity and empyrian steps.... can't just say this shit to us and move on lmao. Speculation and theories don't work when it's SUPER vague like that xD then again we are far from Godhood so we can't complain.

Peter Müller

I smell biggest cliffhanger incomming :o

definitelynotbrjenness

Yeah, sparring valdemar was an interesting decision. I did not expect you to lose your cool and send all of you at him missing off valdemar causing him to declare war. I suspect when you come out of hiding, we 'll discover the reason for your spore-ratic behavior.

definitelynotbrjenness

Did you see Zog's pathetic attempt to excuse his purposeful malefic torturing of us as, "I write these fast and double checking everything would suck, so I occasionally forget changes, etc." What's next? Cliffhangers happen because my dinner was ready?

Thenais

yeah, boss time !

Jayrajsinh Chavda

So, I think Jake and SS both are going to lose to EBM here. Because they need to inform their patrons about this and it is a good time, too, since there's a period of transitioning to next event. And also because all the preparation done by Miranda in case Jake lost would be worthless.

Demonshadow639

I’m of the firm belief that Kindroth is (at least connect to) the big bad.

Naotsugu97

All I’m saying, is that they should have thrown rock, paper, scissors at the end of the chapter!

Peter Smith

Lol imagine if he took the deal, found the parasite, got annoyed at the parasites existence, and simply destroyed it

ABTelford

Ok this chapter has me all hyped - both short term and long term is looking really fun!

ABTelford

Oh thanks! Yes I’d like some popcorn! Here, have a soda.

DefinitelyNotMinaga

I declare all such accusations as baseless and inflammatory upon my character.

kingbobthe5th

I just thought of something funny. What happened to all the furries when the system came to this universe. Did they get changed to what there fursona is when they got put into the evolution place?

Yami

@Demonshadow639 no that would make the skywhale an enemy... bad idea

Fylbrom

Yea, so this unknown faction having some Transcendant to control or affect people's souls/memories is terrifying. Also, Im gonna call this now, Eron is 100% joining this faction. Im in agreement with those who are creeper out by the dude. All he talks about is the "spark" and he does so in the most impersonal way imaginable its eerie

Fylbrom

I imagine Jake asking Villy about those creatures and he replies with a grin and a story about how he ignored the entire path of these creatures with his bloodline. Lol

SG

I wonder if anyone senses some similarities to HHFWM ? The soul seed seemed oddly familiar
