It’s about time somebody printed a 90s Jean Grey! Thank you MuddyRiverMinifigs for being the one to finally fill that gap in my colleX-tion!

This is a character I’ve been wanting for a long time now! Not a Dark Phoenix, but a proper Jean Grey! And she’s never looked better in Lego! For one thing, MRM did some decent color matching for the face print over a darker plastic (although mine had a little bit of ink splotching)

I do wish the expressions were a little different from one another. Like maybe they could have done a shouting face or a sad crying face instead of the natural expression? It would have been much more appreciated and useful for photos imo 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m also a little let down that this fig is printed over the annying “bright light (not-yellow) orange” that has plagued X-figs for years… I’m lookin at you official lego 2012 Wolverine

$55 also doesn't feel like a crazy price either, maybe a little steep, but understandable considering the minifig part sourcing that would have taken place to get all the fig parts!

It’s a good fig and that’s about all I can really say about it! I finally have a Jean Grey and she’s just great :)

Havok on the other hand…

Well Havok is also a nice fig that uh… has no printing below the waist, cost $60, and only came with a custom hair piece…. hmmm… I’m sensing a trend among some of my recent reviews here…

But what ya get ain’t too shabby!

Now I don’t know a ton about Havok’s costume history. Most of the time he’s rocking that funny lookin three-pronged helmet, but this look is certainly more streamlined! Based on some surface level research, it’s from a recent run when he was a member of The Starjammers doing… idk mutant space stuff with Ch’od

(…it’d be fun to have a big fig Ch’od…)

So not exactly a 90s variant of the character, but still cool! Truth be told, Marvel’s Space stuff has never interested me, but X-Lore in my mind is the biggest comic book soap opera in existence so I take no shame in admitting I’m a noob.

That being said, I still like this fig! It’s really clean! The custom hair for one makes me retroactively wish Jean came with custom hair! I mean hell, just look at all these other alternatives that... well they just don't feel quite right...

However with Havok, I do find it neat to address that MRM has finally (after nearly a decade on the scene) has dived into the world of custom molded Lego elements and I’m shockingly impressed! This custom tan hair looks and feels like genuine ABS Lego plastic. It’s soft to the touch, nice and shiny! It’s really (again) quite shockingly good coming from Beau!

As for the print of the fig, it’s also good stuff! The light blue isn’t faded or darkened by the black underlayer of plastic, and there really isn’t any smudging that I can find compared to Jean.

The expressions are also really good! Again nice quality print that matches light flesh close enough! His fig parts ironically look great on DC characters too :P

At the end of the day, $60 isn’t a terrible price for any custom fig these days. However it’s a bit steep considering what other brands like CitizenBrick can put out there with similar layers of pad print and custom elements.

I’m still impressed with these two though! But what do you guys think?
