Something must be going on with MrJ, because one of these figs wasn't quite what I was led to believe…

Sure! They’re solidly made custom figs as we’ve all come to know from MrJ! But in a similar fashion to the recent Kingdom Come Green Lantern and The Flash we’d looked, the illustrations for the preorder advertisement didn't quite match the final product 🤨

I mean come on, that dark red is very contrasting to what we were sold back in... *checks notes* all the way back in August 2023 (yeesh that was a while ago)

I mean just look at the collectors card and check out how bright it is versus the final product!

I mean it’s weird because like, my brain wants to almost autocorrect the story to “well of course it would have to be bright red and dark red” but what I was honestly hoping for, was exactly what we see here in the illustration Just a slightly darker red, with standard red accents.

Heck, even a fig that was all bright red with just some accent lines for boots and muscles and stuff would’ve also been fine! At least I wouldn’t have felt misled by the preorder process...

The yellow fig is a bit better, but the fact that the yellow isn’t consistent from parts to print also bugs me. The yellow fig also wasn’t designed to have print in the upper area of the torso. This is a design clearly intended to have that tank-top style look, so it’s odd for MrJ to print that belt a full 360° but not the yellow around the shoulders. The standard fig is fine without it, clearly. But in this context of the retro suit, it really could have used just that small bit of detail.

I really want to enjoy these two, I really do, but there's just lots of little idoms that I kept noticing. Like these sloppy red boots where toe meets leg. Come on man!

Even the head prints (and subsequently the cowls that I’ll talk about in a second), there’s just something not quite right here.

All four faces  have that “old man mouth” going on with all those wrinkles that I am just not vibing with. Something about the weird chin and frown lines give him too much age or even more scowl-y than I’d like to see with Daredevil. I’d have much preferred MrJ to have toned back some of the wrinkles and maybe even toss in a smirking face instead 🤷🏻‍♂️

As for those cowls… there’s no kind way to say this. They’re just bad.

The molded “real” ears on the side of the head, the really rumply furrowed brow, the horns that are just way to long! It’s all no good to me.

I mean sure, in certain contexts it looks great for maybe an action figure, but not a minifig! I wish MrJ could have just tweaked a few of those weird design choices. Like maybe shorten up those muttonchop things on the sides! Smooth out the facial area to open up the eye holes a little more! Anything would be better than this!

(okay yes, I’m being harsh again, it’s not that bad, but I’m just not enjoying this final product as much as the collectors card illustrations, simple as that)

There’s some other stuff included with these two that are still worthy of praise though. The leg straps for the billy clubs are great! They scale well with minifig proportions and… uhm…

Oh… they’re glued to the legs and cannot be removed…?

Well fine. I didn’t want to have any fun swapping parts anyway! 😑

So really the only thing I can do is swap out the weird cowls?

I'm glad I didn’t pick up the other two chase variants, because I feel pretty let down right now! 😎👍

All in all, I think these two could have been better. We’ve seen better from MrJ so I’m not sure what happened here… perhaps the price played a factor into these? They were both on the cheaper range of custom figs going on the market for $55ea at the time of their preorder... so who's to say?

idk… all I know is that my search for a nice custom comic DD cowl continues! 

Only time will tell if I'll find one some day… 🤔
