MrJBrick's "X-Men '97" Jean Grey (Patreon)
Content
I nearly missed out on this fig if it wasn’t for the kindness of folks on the internet selling theirs to me! Shout out to the second hand market! Woo!
idk, for some reason, when MrJ put this fig up for preorder, they didn’t use their normal “illustrated” images for the promotion of this fig. Instead they listed it with weird images of their fig design overlaid on a 3D render of the hair.
It was very odd and naturally, it felt a little sketchy. So I skipped it, intentionally. Then all of a sudden a few months later, these beautiful Jean Grey figs start popping up all around Instagram, and what’dya know! It’s that funky looking render fully realised and expertly designed!
And wow! Just look at this fig! The color choices especially impress me! That orangy-yellow linework for the legs is just perfect! The blues across the whole thing, nice and consistent! Sure, it coulda been dark blue to match the show, but I'm okay with the standard blue here!
It was reflective blue anyway, so unless MrJ planned for something metallic, either this blue or dark blue would have been just fine in my eyes.
That hair is great too! …well okay hold on, it’s good, but the hair certainly could have been more red! But hey, at least it’s a nice clean 3D resin inside and out!
I do sort of wish MrJ would have included a second hairpiece, more in line with her bangs & ponytail look from the show...
I did try and cheese it a little with some other Official Lego hairpieces, but nothing was like “perfect” if you see what I mean… especially the color...
So then I was like “well if I want the perfect color and style, then my options are pretty limited, especially when the longer hair won’t fit with the custom shoulder piece
Like it’s not a total deal breaker if you remove those shoulder blades she’s got, but it’s too good of a custom part not to include!
Oh and since we chatted about MRM yesterday, I wanted to compare this fig to the last Jean Grey I reviewed…
It’s fun to look at these two side by side! Compared to MRM, this MrJ fig is clearly much more inspired by the recent X-Men ‘97 sequel show. All while MRM’s is certainly a tinge more comic-based, and a lot more Lego Marvel Video Game inspired with those weird pockets on the sides of the legs and such.
They’re both great figs though! Love ‘em both for different reasons!
But at the end of the day, MrJ’s fig could have certainly benefited from a second hair piece, or even at the very least, a second face print! An angry expression, eyes closed, or something more action oriented would have been cool, but like most custom minifigures, secondary expressions tend to be a low requirement
Such is this hobby I suppose 🤷🏻♂️
